2 Months Free Presto (Streaming Movies) - Now Works with Chromecast

1140
TELSTRA_STAFF01

This was meant to expire in June, but I just used it and it appeared to work (got charged $0 to my card). use at your own risk.

It will roll onto the $9.99 per month unless cancelled (the rate recently dropped - its now pretty good value).

I'm planning on using this with my recently acquired chrome cast by downloading the presto app to my ipad - then casting to my TV through google chromecast.

Have fun

  • How can two months subscription which cost's $9.95 per month equal $24.95 saveing as it's stated above.

    • +2

At the time of the offer it appears to have been $19.99 per month. So it still doesn't make sense (would be $39.98 saving).

Just a copy paste, not my words.

      • +8

Originally when you signed up for a new presto service it was $4.99 for the first month and then $19.99 each month

Hence a saving of $24.98 for 2 months

  • +14

Mmmmm all that low definition goodness in plain old stereo sound…

    • +4

I have a set of unique circumstances that makes Presto attractive to me -
      - I'm cheap. It's fairly cheap
      - I have no personal computer, or fixed network connection. Just an iPhone and an iPad and a mobile data plan with 30-40 gig per month.
      - With no fixed network connection and router meaning not being able to bugger around trying to pretend to the internet that i'm accessing a service from the states, I couldn't find a better option to watch online movies on my TV with chromecast
      - The definition thing isn't a big deal for me as I don't have much data anyway.

      • +3

What mobile data plan are you on? Sounds good

      • +1

an 30 to 40 gigs mobile broadband plan cost lot of money, more than a fixed network connection. Personal computer isn't that expensive, a cheap one costs the same as a new iPad.

        • +3

You could jag a decent enough personal computer for 0-50 bucks if you were resourceful and wanted one. Judging by the fact that he still uses the full personal computer term I am expecting he hasnt had one for a looong time

        • +1

          @Jackson:

I meant personal computer as opposed to a work computer (which I have). I'm on computers all day, have no interest in using one outside of work

You raise an interesting point. When someone mentions a work PC, they are talking about a "work personal computer" which may be contradictory

      • 30-40Gb mobile data?!? What? Do those plans even exist?

  • +5

if only they upgrade their standard def videos to HD/FHD.

  • +2

Agree needs HD and Surround sound and i would get this in second

  • I think hey mean it will roll into $19 per month not $9.

    • Wrong - "Go To Deal" pic says it all. $9.99 month

  • Who cares if it isn't HD it's free! Tried it out. Now to pen in a calendar item to cancel before they get any $$$ out of me

  • Would you get this if you already have Netflix?

    • +7

      No

    • +3

Absolutely not. SD, very small library, no TV shows, very buggy with chromecast and very poor selection of movies (contains all the crap no one wants to watch and none of the stuff everyone wants)

  • Anyone here got Netflix working with Chromecast? I got a chromecast from a DS deal and haven't tried yet as I have a feeling it will take me a while.

    • +1

Works fine you will have to change some setting on your router though just Google it for you router.

    • +2

Um. Just play the video on Chrome browser and just cast it to the chromecast?

EDIT:Silly me here is how you do it:

      http://ausdroid.net/howto/chromecast-coming-heres-can-get-ne…

    • +2

Worked like a charm for me once I had Getflix and Netflix set up.

    • +2

What I did was set a rule up in my firewall to block all network traffic from the chromecast to the google dns servers. This forced the chromecast to use my networks default DNS settings (unblock-us).

  • Any point getting if I already have foxtel subscription and I use foxtelgo?

  • +3

I'm sticking with Netflix, at least I can get that through my PS3

    • At least try it out for 2 months whilst it's free.

  • +1

Just FYI, this overrides the code in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157594 - not stacks.

  • will i be charged after 2 months???

    • +3

I'd certainly say so! Set a reminder to cancel a day or two before it's due to expire. Easy.

Who knows… you might actually like it too!

      • do you know how to cancel it?? i never cancel monthly fee like this… can i cancel it from the web or i have to go to the bank??

        • +1

There's a 'Close My Account' option on the Billing Page: https://movies.presto.com.au/#!billing: … but of course you have to have already subscribed to see that.

        • +1

@SteveAndBelle: You can also suspend your account indefinitely

        • @rbyrnes: Will you still have access for the remaining 2 months?

        • @unity1: Not if your account is suspended (obviously?)

        • @rbyrnes: With some services when you cancel you can keep using your existing entitlements, with others your entitlements end immediately. I was interested to known what happens with this service if I cancel immediately (so there is no risk of getting charged 2 month down the track)

  • Just realised there is no iPhone app. iPad only. What an odd decision.

    • -2

So Apple apps are device type specific? Eek! I had no idea!! Thank goodness I went down the Android route.

      • +1

Some Android apps only works on phones and not tablets. Nothing related to Apple.

        • +2

Really? Hmm, I've never come across that myself but I haven't installed every app available either ;)

        • @SteveAndBelle: presto is only for Android tablets :)

        • +2

@wasabinator: Any way to get it to work on phones? Would be good if someone could upload the apk.

        • @kaBargain: I tried this with the BigPond Movies app.. no good. Installed the APK on my Nexus 5, just crashes on startup. They've got something going on in software that knows what device it's being launched on.

      • Even worse for Android (which I what I use). iOS is very easy to change countries in the store, much more complicated with android. Most iPhone apps work with iPad. Not enough android tablet apps yet (though no iOS play newsstand yet)

    • <supports-screens android:anyDensity="true" android:smallScreens="false" android:normalScreens="false" android:largeScreens="true" android:resizeable="false" android:xlargeScreens="true" android:requiresSmallestWidthDp="600" />

That's what's stopping it from working on phones for Android. APK won't recompile after removing but.

after I input my credit card information into the system, it shows:

Uh-oh! Presto has encountered a bit of a glitch.
We are working hard to fix it, so you can try again in a few minutes or come back a bit later.

then I don't have two month free access but my credit card information was recorded in the system. WTF

    • OZBARGAINED!!

      • don't know if it's ozbargained or not,but when I apply the code it shows:

Telstra 2MTH Free Staff Offer Jun - Aug 2014
Presto Offer ? Two Months Free Subscription
Discount applied100% off for 2 months

which means the code still working but the Jun-Aug 2014 shows maybe only free between Jun and Aug 2014

    • I tried to use a CC with no money on the account and got this error. Worked once I used another card.

  • No dice, I'm getting:

Uh-oh! Presto has encountered a bit of a glitch.

We are working hard to fix it, so you can try again in a few minutes or come back a bit later.

  • +2

It's working fine for me i stacked it on top of my free chromecast month

  • Awesome! I bought a Chromecast and have just finished my first free month. I suspended my account a couple of days ago before they billed my CC (because I'm cheap :) ) and just re-subscribed with the same account and this offer - 2 more months free!

    Sweet.

  • Are there any smart tvs out there with Presto apps or do I need a a phone/tablet/chromecast or some other device to get it onto the tv screen

  • The movie selection looks pretty average. Is Netflix better?

  • +1

Worked fine for me. Used a spare debit card that has about $2 on it to keep safe.

  • +2

Not even worth it at $0 with their crappy selection of SD content.

  • I think i got charged $1 on my credit card!! Thought free??

    • +1

it will refund, just a check to see valid card

  • thanks

  • +1

Thanks OP. I was going to sign up on the weekend seeing as the subscription cost has been halved. This 2 months offer icing on the cake.

  • +1

Thanks OP, have signed up. Will definitely cancel at end of free trial, I think I only had around 15 movies in my watch list after scouring the streaming options.

If the range keeps growing and price stays the same it might one day be worthwhile subscribing.

  • Crap expensive video streaming service… most already have better options, i'm guessing

  • Same as most here. Will give it a go. Not too sure if I will stay after the trial. Doesn't look like much on there though. Am already using Netflix, hulu plus and HBO Nordic but would like to support local product at the right price (even though it is foxtel)

    • +1

I'd like to support the local product but for the fact Presto is owned by two of my least favourite local companies.

  • Is this unmetered if I have Bigpond Broadband?

    • +1

      Nope

  • +2

Good deal, thanks to OP for posting.

Have been thinking about this kind of digital library access, was planning to get Netflix setup but my ADSL is around 5Mb/s download on a good day. Thanks Mr Murdoch. However I've installed an app called viewster and it has heaps of non-hollywood/blockbuster movies (watching super high me, now), and TV series too. With this and my local library DVD selection, which is HuGe, http://www.libcat.blacktown.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MS… also a member in parra http://libcat.parracity.nsw.gov.au/client/default# which even have some blue ray rentals, I'm pretty well setup for TV series, movies and docos.

Also the parra library has a link to http://beamafilm.com/library/parramatta/ which has a lot of docos, which is all my friend uses his Netflix now after watching the TV series he liked. So if you have time to go to a local library, which you pay for already, enjoy!

Links for android apps, I use nexus 10 without issue.
