What makes it worth $5 is the labor of flattening the cardboard boxes before the manufacturer receive them.

The lens and other components too of course.

Considering the price people pay for drinks (slushies, bottled water, etc), this is not that bad. Also, having just got one myself, I have to say I've payed significantly more for something that gave less enjoyment.

BTW, with a Samsung S3, I've found the phone needs to be upside down. But its not really a drama, only the menu on the Google Cardboard app is upside down, and occasionally the off button on the phone gets triggered.

It's actually 2 rare earth magnets, two (albeit plastic) lenses, cardboard cut out to a very specific template and packaged.

It would cost you more than $5 to assemble it for sure.

Let's not forget someone has to ship it to your doorstep.

  • does it include the lenses or just the cardboard?
    EDIT: got it. lenses included.

does it include the lenses or just the cardboard

Actually it only includes the phone. Human, Cardboard, lenses and rubber band not included. Pictures for illustration purposes only. T &C apply. See in store for details

As a true ozbargainer, ill be Waiting till they offer it as a freebie

    • looks like you'll be waiting for a pretty long time…

    • +15

A true ozbargainer buys a heap of stuff that they will probably never use, or have several already, because it is on sale.

      • Agreed

        • +1

Might still get slightly cheaper imo.,,
Bit like that phone button thingy.

Initially on ozb was $2 - then $1.3 - then 99c now I see 79c US on this tinydeal website…

I bought mine at @$1.3….. I suck at OZB lol

        • @voter1:

you think you suck at ozb…I backed the pressy kickstarter at $25…. :(

(although to be fair the official Pressy app is a lot nicer than the Klick app. But not $24 nicer)

It is the cheapest but it's 1st gen, 3 pieces, poor quality cardboard/components, unassembled. Probably better to spend another $2 for a better one.

    • +2

Good to know. What's the difference between first and second generations? Is there a particular supplier you would recommend?

      • Yeah, what's the difference?

        • Ones made from cardboard.. The other is made from.. oh wait..

      • +1

1st gen has 3 separate cardboards. 2nd gen comes in 1 piece like the one at google io and better quality cardboard.

    • +1

how can you tell when it's first or second generation?

      • You can tell by the serial number.

        • I got a special edition. No serial number.

        • +1

@theguru1: Oh no, you received a counterfeit :(

    • +1

Are there actually generations? Or are you just joking? really cant tell -.-

  • Does this work with other android phone other than Nexus 5?

    • allegedly: "Compatibility: iPhone, Samsung Phones, Google Nexus 4/ 5/ 6, HTC One, Xiaomi Mi3 and other brand phones with 4-5 inch screen"

      • Only Samsung S4 and S5, with limited support for the S3.

  • +2

I got mine last night and it is really good and fun! It takes a few seconds for your eyes to adjust but after that it was all good. I'm just disappointed that there aren't many apps for it to take full advantage

for people looking for a good VR Experience I highly recommend looking for some 35mm to 45mm diameter lensed(The 25mm diameter lenses restrict your FOV). Even 50mm may work if you dont have a big Nose. The focal length needs to be around 45 -100mm I found 100mm is pretty good as there is less strain on the eyes but ofcoz you need to modify the fitting to hold the phone 100mm away from the lens. For a more immersive experience go with a shorter focal length. but your eyes may hurt. Also Make sure you go with a bi-convex lens. Plano convex will have issues around the edges.

Also If you want to try out VR with a tablet go with a very long focal Length Lens (150-250mm)

  • For anyone who has a Sony Xperia Z2, move the magnet to the bottom side on the left and it will work perfectly with the magnet.

  • Does this kit fit Samsung note 3?

    • I tried with a Note 3, the screen was to big so the picture didn't quite match up.

  • how did you get it for $5 shipped?

    best i get is 6.95

    • you click the link, it says AUD$5.04, with the words 'free shipping' under it. Add to cart, still AUD$5.04. Do you have it set to a different country's dollar currency?

      • got it

must have clicked the other tinydeal link

  • Could some please suggest a newer generation model with larger lenses? Thanks

  • I bought this one. — Was this a first gen product since it says (3x cardboard)?

  • Thanks, ordered one.
    $5.04 shipped!

  • I bought the focalprice version. Does anyone recommend any good apps? Thanks!

  • +1

Got this last month. Do NOT try the default google cardboard app for this, it sucks! Try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.FabulousPi… instead, much better results.

  • Hmm.. not sure what this can do?

But if it can do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHCYHldJi_g it's an instant buy for 5 bucks!

  • Purchased. Should be a good 5 minute long hoot

  • For $5.04 I'll give it a shot. I'm sure it'll make a nifty gift for my brother who just got a Nexus 5.

I'm curious to see if it will work with half side by side 3D video files as well. That would make it well worth the asking price if it does :)

  • Anyone have an idea what field of view or %-area of screen available through this, to give an impression of resolution left over from FHD*5-6"?

    • Roughly 100deg FoV I'm told.

Thus with a FHD screen we are talking about ~1/10th of a degree per pixel.

Or, assuming you sit 1m from a 24" display, about the same as a 300 x 170 resolution screen. Although it's not actually as simple as that because the fact that you have two eyes complicates how it appears to you.

      • Strange while interesting …
10:1 deg ratio 1080 100°10.8px seems properly appealing
( rather to follow this analogy than a 170p experience) .

Ideally.. I have a stereo 450p target in mind however can afford no more than a $350 2K phone-Atm. 800x2=1600; 630p px will get wasted (1080 less 450).

        Note 3/1+1's generous 15 cm*length landscape I'll hope is feasible.. .

•Anybody can you pls share cardboard $5 as next avail to ship.

      • oops my talking point got mixed up there w' vertical angle, versus the nearly 180° humans so see in left-to-right vision.

So to clarify: for 3D a 800 horizontal holds merely 8 px ea °FoV cardboard.
Maybe more an issue to VR-scapes than a simple app like movies.

  • Just got an email saying they're out of stock and will try to get some more

    • Just got the same email as well :(

  • Hmmm, also got the email saying they were out of stock but then they post the same deal for 74c less also on OzBargain.

Methinks we might not be getting these :(

    • If you paid via PayPal, you can always dispute the transaction up to 45 days from when it was made

  • Down at cheaper and cheaper prices,Ops!

  • I received my cardboard today! It actually arrived quicker than I expected.
