      It's basically connecting to the VPN's computer where all internet traffic goes through them before coming to you.
      Some uses are:

      • the connection between you and that computer is encrypted so no one outside can eavesdrop on what you're looking at. Some people use this fact to download things anonymously. The VPN could still be keeping logs of your traffic but those that don't normally advertise as such.

      • Since VPN's normally offer connections from various geographical regions, people sometimes use VPN's for viewing content like Netflix which are only available to restricted regions.

      • some companies offer VPN to their employees so when outside the corporate network (eg. at home), they can still access services within, as if they were physically at a work computer.

      • since there's a computer between you and the internet, other's use VPNs to remain anonymous on the internet, albeit filtered through the VPN.

    Please excuse a stupid question, but what is this service good for? I doubt it can replace my getflix subscription because of the 3 hour limitation (I've been known to watch a couple of movies or binge on a drama series).
    What do people actually use this for?

      the 3hr limitations only for the free service this key is for the "special edition" for 1 yr which would cost $50 normally
      Also the free trials been changed to 5hrs

      Definitely not. This service is only suitable for net browsing, you won't get a reliably consistent stream on the servers which are provided. You should be using a DNS service for Netflix.

      Probably wont hurt to try it on your own first. If you havent registeredwith netflix before you can get free 1 month subscription. I did that just now and so far no lag at all (standard definition - cyberghost LA server)

          HD requires different plan & also requires at least 5mbps bandwidth. Speedtest result for this vpn is only 5mbps and sometimes lower so I dont think it will be lag free.

      Just tried netflix and it works great - no connection drops or video buffering or any of that stuff. My normal Internet speed is pretty bad too - I get around 4 Mbps WITHOUT the VPN.

    Painfully slow.
    566ms ping from NY server 0.5Mbps download vs another VPN in Los Angeles with 162ms ping and 28Mbps download.

    Well, after several tries it finally worked for me, at 7:00 p.m., and I got my activation key in an email. I clicked the link in there, and a screen opened, but I don't know how to proceed from there. It says "Start Cyberghost" and shows you a screen where you can click on "Activate Key"… but, in spite of the video instructions, I am still lost! Can anyone explain how to do this as you might explain it to a five-year-old (actually, I am just on fifteen times that, but I am practically a computer illiterate!) Thanks!

I expected this to happen when I presse the button marked "Activate Key"… but there is no screen (which I can find) on the site which HAS this button… I only know of its existence through the TV tutorial provided when you click on the hotlink they send you in their email!     Don't be too sure. Twenty minutes before I finally got my activation key, I got a message (in German) next to the grey box (for your email address) which said something like "Sorry, there are no keys left"… but I had had so many strange error messages trying to access the site in the first place that I decided to keep on trying. For a few minutes there was no grey box at all; then suddenly one was there; and this time it worked for me. That was only a few minutes before Cheap Skate posted his message… so it's possible that what he saw was another random error message… or it's possible that I got a worthless activation key, too, I suppose!

      I haven't tried yet, but, since Kuro Neko was so helpful to me, I'd like to help someone in return. So here's what it says in the trouble-shooting section of the cyberghost website:

      1. If CyberGhost isn't able to establish a VPN connection, please first check, if the problem persists after you have chosen a different country or server. If the problem only appears for a single server or country, there might be a temporary problem with that location.

      2. If the problem exists for all locations and servers, please check if your Firewall or antivirus software is blocking CyberGhost. To make sure, the Firewall or antivirus software is NOT the reason for the problem, we suggest to temporary uninstall both. If the problem is solved, contact the software provider of your Firewall or antivirus software to get further support.

      3. In some countries, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) might block our service for unknown reasons. You must be able to reach our servers through UDP port 9081.

      4. If the problem persists, you can send us additional debug information. How to create such kind of "debug log" is described in video (hot link).

      Does any of that make any sense?

        I eventually got to set it up. I didn't realize that the password for the VPN is different to the account password. You find it in the account details.
        Its nice to set it up manually without using their software.
