No Chinese phone could compare with this phone especially the price.

  • +22

I reckon a lot of Ozbargainers will be buying the Nokia who don't even need it.

    • +1

    • Tell me about it. I have a 1020 i dont even use, somehow i still want this…lol

    • Yep. I've hardly touched the $18 ZTE from HN, but I'll still get this if I can

    • That's what OzBargains all about lol

  • Thats a good price for the USB + wifi too isnt it?

    • Its ok

  • It's going to be fight for the lumia 530 when the shop opens

    Game on people

Also, can you get a raincheck on the phone?

  • +12

    @TRENT86

I must say, you're such a big contributor to the community! Thank you so much, loving your deals. Keep it up!

    • +2

Thanks m8. Another to come :)

  • could it be unlocked? or could i use Aldi Mobile sim card?

    • If you use Aldi Mobile then you won't need to unlock the phone.

  • +2

Unlock it for $15 —Ozbargainer called 'Bagman' can unlock the Nokia 530 for $15 if anyone interested :-)

  • +1

Bagman has gotten a few unlock codes for me before. All worked well. Nice guy

    • could you confirm the code works on Telstra 530? Thanks

      • +1

Best to drop him an email with phone details and he'd respond to it swiftly…

    • Where to find Bagman, i have one to unlock, could you please provide contact details.

  • +3

Will definitely be getting one of these if I can, plan on using it as a high capacity MP3 player… Love the fact that it can take Micro SD cards of up to 128GB in size!

    • Just picked one up from Big Top Maroochydore (Sunshine Coast) Woolworths, they have a few left apparently, if any Sunshine Coast residents want to go and grab one.

    • +1

Touche. It's future proofed to hold a tremendous amount of storage capacity.

  • Please keep in mind that ONLY 4G storage for 530, 520 is 8G if remembered correctly.

    • +2

Are you referring to memory for app install purposes?

It has micro SD, supporting up to 128GB…

      • micro SD is supporting App installation, isn't it? I am not sure, Is mSD only for music, pic and other data stuff? anyone has experience with windows phone, please share…

        • Yep I can put apps, videos, music, pics e.g. on my SD Card.
          Nokia Lumia 1320

        • +1

That's why I was wondering why you highlighted the 4gb, since it doesn't really matter as the SD makes up for it.

        • @nismo: as per GSMarena it comes with 4GB memory, however this telstra prepaid version dont have any memory card instead 2GB built-in and comes with earphones. Just bought one. But it's loading speed is much much faster than Nokia 520.

  • +1

It doesn't say no rainchecks, so hopefully you can get one!

    • And only at selected stores.

      • +1

        Probably only major woolies

  • Unlocked my Lumia 520 via [email protected] for $18.00

  • This is great value. The TFT screen is a bit of a downer but to be honest it wouldnt bother me that much. Viewing angles are compromised but, for $39, its a no brainer.

Just insane value. Only thing that is stopping me is that I doubt that this can be unlocked by third party services.

Coles may offer Vodafone Huawei Ascend Y330 for $49 next week…LOL

    • insider source?

      • +1

        no just joking.

    • +1

but, you do have me wondering what Coles will counter it with next week.

  • is it dual sim?

    • +1

No. Telstra want you to use them only.

    • Nope, the 630 from overseas is dual SIM, I have one of them with 64GB micro SD and love that for a cheap phone :)

But this is a ridiculously good deal.

  • +3

forget the phone, what flavour pizzas they got

  • +3

If you already have several good phones, it's a waste of money to buy this one. Could buy something that you actually need with that $39.50 instead.

Consider this: you're spending about $40 on a locked phone, then another $15+ just to unlock it, not to mention extra $$ on a MicroSD card if you don't already have one (basically a requirement, since there's less than 2GB free out of the box).

All up, its at least $60 (if not more), and it'll still have Telstra branding and the screen will still be crap.

    • +1

So if you unlock the phone from Telstra, do you still have to wait for Telstra to release software updates or can you then receive official Nokia updates?

      • You'll still have to wait, as it won't get rid of the carrier branding, unless you find a way to reflash the firmware to "country variant" (i.e., generic). Not sure if the Windows Phone Developer Preview will work though - if it does, it'll give you the latest software features.

        • +1

Thanks for that information happychappy1. Another reason to stay with my unbranded 520.

    • +1

Don't unlock it then, buy an Aldi $5.00 sim and you've got a spare active phone for 1 year for less than $45.00.

      • Yep, if you don't already have a good phone spare. Otherwise, you could just buy the $5 Aldi SIM without the phone. Just remember to keep the battery topped up.

        • Or you could sell that "better backup" phone you have for >$40 and then get this.

    • Yep Agree and reviews are not that good, My battery ha 2100, that thing will go flat after a few messages , be ok for the kiddies at school though.

  • +1

Best thing about phone is "HERE" maps.. A complete offline maps and it works like a gem..

  • +2

Has radio but need earphone to use, right? Can't use bluetooth headset for radio I heard.

Also the GPS will works fine without simcard inside?

    • +2

Will work fine. I've used an android as a GPS speedometer for a while. All phones are usable without a sim nowadays

    • +3

Earphone = antenna for FM radio (no built in antenna for FM).

Assisted GPS will work faster, but Qualcomm is pretty quick, so it'll still work without a SIM.

    • +1

Good question about the GPS, Im guessing the phone has assisted GPS (from phone towers) like most modern phones do to increase the GPS location speed, I wonder if that still works without a sim card in? (or an old unregistered sim card even).

  • Wow. Cheaaaaap!
    Nokia 530 + Aldi Mobile pre-paid = winning!

    • +1

can somebody explain why Aldi? it's like the Telstra phone accept Aldi SIM, isn't it?

      • +1

Pretty much and no need to unlock phone.

      • +1

ALDI is on Telstra network. Phone is network locked.

        • Keep in mind Boost too. They use the Full Telstra NextG 3G network, which means better distance in country/regional areas and faster internet speeds. They do a 30 day unlimited for $40 with 2 GB of data and unlimited 15 day with 1 GB for $20. Make your calls on 15th day to stretch it out to 31 or 32 days if you can live a day or two without service, only incoming and app messaging and viber calls on wifi.

        • @ozhunter68: Another thing to keep in mind, someone reported their 530 not working with Aldi. That means it's service-provider-locked rather than network-locked… at least his batch was. If so, it won't work with Boost either.

  • wow great deal. I wonder if this is available in the city stores in Sydney.

    • +2

Just put one on hold at Wolli Creek (I know it's not a city store, but thought I'd mention it). They have about 10 in the cabinet.

  • -8

Laugh, this is totally useless to me. If you ever tried Windows Phone, you will know why NOKIA was down.

Hardware may be OK. But software…. so poor. You cannot expect many apps like in Android or Apple.

If no apps, what is the point of buying a smart phone? As a mirror or MP3 player? Come on, a MP3 player, on eBay, just $2.

You'd better buy a better HUAWEI Andorid phone, like G7, super value you get at relatively low price.

A few cheap phones just make your pocket like a bin.

A good phone is all you need in hand.

    • +10

You get free navigation maps for life.
      3g, WiFi, internet browser.
Windows phone performance on low end phone is great.

A smartphone does not mean just apps. Its more than that and there are not many important apps left which are not available on wp. No apps argument is old and app gap have reduced a lot.

If you can find a phone under 40$,and can perform equal to this phone. Plz do tell us.

      • +1

If you don't have any phone, and this is all you can afford, then this phone is a bargain, no doubt.

It's great being able to install apps on an SD card, and HERE Drive+ is also great (though I wouldn't count on it being for life —> I read something about them winding back development on Windows Phone).

However, I wouldn't say that Windows phone performance on low end phones is 'great', as once you start using it, it lags all over the place ("loading…." —> e.g., Skype).

My experience on the Huawei Ascend G526 (bought for $99) is much better. Rooted and with the Google Now Launcher, it looks and feels almost like stock android. I would say the performance on the G526 is much smoother and more consistent than the Nokia 520 which I owned (Skype always lagged when loading, and I had random key tones, even though I turned it off).

So, if you can save up a bit and get a decent Android phone, you'll be way ahead in terms of features and overall experience. Remember, that $40 is only the starter price, as if you want to use it fully, you'll need a decent sized MicroSD card. These add-ons add to the cost, and for not much more you can get much better phones.

Here are some of the things I can do on Android that I can't do with Windows Phone:
        - Watch TV from my HD Homerun units (either on their own, or through TVHeadend backend).
        - Use official Google apps (e.g., YouTube, Maps, Keep).
        - Watch ABC iView
        - Have a PDF or eBook reader read aloud to me (also the ability to edit).
        - Block ads

        • +5

I have not used g526 but I have some experience with low end android phones. Ics and jelly beans are no where close to low end windows phone.

I have used kitkat only on high end phones. I have heard that its good for low end phones but kitkat dont allow apps installation on sd card. Doing so reduces lags and crashes.
You need to root your device and flash different roms and kernels to fix that. Something most users dont bother to do and doing it first time can take hours. If you consider side fixes than there are many unofficial apps on wp too. I dont know many but you can use all google services with unofficial apps.

Os fights and which device is better is argument for different websites. For ozbargain, You are saying to spend 2.4x times money and get better thing. Why not instead of 99 spend 250 and get Better device. Thing is 40$ for a smartphone which works very well is a bargain.

        • +1

@dadeadman: What I was saying is, if $40 is all you want to spend, and want to remain on a Telstra network, then by all means, this is a good option.

However, if you're wanting a better experience, it would be wise to save the money and put it towards a better phone. Android Jelly Bean was all about smoothing the UI ("Project Butter").

How difficult it is to root depends on your phone - some need the bootloader unlocked. On the Huawei, all I needed was to download the Framaroot apk from XDA and then run it on my phone. It was that easy.

The Nokia Lumia 530 has a few major drawbacks —> the biggest being the screen, which is TN (i.e., poor colours and narrow viewing angles), and has a relatively low pixel density.

I have a Nexus 5 as well, and I can say that it is a much better experience, not only due to the speed or the screen, but also the number of apps available. If you get a higher end Windows Phone (e.g., 1020), you'll get a better camera, and it'll be smoother. But there will be many apps unavailable. It really depends on what experience you're after.

        • +2

          [@happychappy1](/comment/232936
Ok. Agree with you except for rooting part. It is easy to do but many ppl are scared of close to 0 percent risks involved. Finding right images to flash etc. Someone with no knowledge about rooting (like 95% ppl) will have lot of trouble.

I own a 1020, 630(ozbargain deal. Don't need it but cant let the deal slide) and I used to have nexus 5 too. I have no experience with 530 but have used friends 520. Mostly performance is equal to 1020. Sluggish performance only when using too much ram. That is why I think wp performs great on low end phones. Maybe you have got some bad experience.

        • +1

@dadeadman: It's ridiculously easy to root the Nexus 5. All you need to do is download CF-Autoroot for Hammerhead (i.e. Nexus 5), then run the script for your OS.

One thing to note is that the bootloader needs to be unlocked (CF-Autoroot does it for you), and when the bootloader is unlocked, it'll wipe the device (it'll stay unlocked unless you relock it, so you won't need to wipe again).

Not sure exactly what you mean by performance, as if your looking at benchmarks, the faster phones will have better scores (e.g., Sunspider java benchmarks will show significantly lower times/ms). If you mean smoothness of the UI, Jelly Bean phones will perform just as well when everything is loaded up (just like Windows Phone, which can lag in the same circumstances). It's when you run too many apps in the background that it'll start to slow down. Windows Phone mostly just hibernates apps, but when they resume, the lag is noticeable (like iOS).

Keep in mind that the Windows Phone can't do much due to the lack of apps, so it has less opportunities to lag. But I can tell you that Skype is a very laggy app on WP.

        • +3

@happychappy1: I think rooting an Android device is way beyond what the average user would be comfortable with… these people become confused when looking at directory structures in Windows Explorer and setting up favourites links in Internet Explorer :-) Sure, rooting the g526 probably would result in a smoother UI but most people won't be able to do it.

Thanks for the info regarding rooting however. This could be the best option for the tech savvy.

        • @robertm: Rooting is beyond the average user if they are ignorant and refuse to read and investigate.

Everything can be learnt, by simply Googling and reading installation instructions. For the Nexus 5, rooting involves using the included script, plugging in the Nexus or other similar device and enabling USB debugging mode —> doesn't take a rocket scientist.

G526 is good simply because it is cheap and has dual 1.2 GHz Krait cores (similar to Cortex-A15). It's even easier to root the G526, just install a program and run it.

You say that rooting results in a smoother UI shows you really don't understand what 'rooting' is.

'Rooting' = grant 'root' permissions (i.e., ability to read/write to the root director, or the lowest level in the drive aka '/').

By rooting one is able to have better control over the device, and what runs on it.

For those who don't own one, the G526 is already very smooth, without rooting, due to its almost stock Android interface (no heavy skins, not much bloat except for carrier programs etc.).

        • +5

          @happychappy1:

Rooting is beyond the average user if they are ignorant and refuse to read and investigate.

I think the average user just wants to use their phone and not spend hours learning about rooting. :)
