        • I have also removed the branding from my phone as well.
Though I am still on the same operating system (8.10.12400.899)the firmware is now 01068.00023.14295.43001.

I had thought that now it didn't advertise itself as the Telstra OEM phone it would get more updates from Microsoft.

Are there no updates so far for the Lumia 530 perhaps? I didn't want to register for the developers program.

The problem with my SDCARD and APPS is still there though. If I reboot any app stored on the SDCARD corrupts.

        • @backer: I wonder what's going on with your SD card app issue? I'm using a Sandisk 4GB and the Apps are working fine from it. Have you got another SD card you could try?

        • @S3ISOR:
Have you turned the phone off then on again and tried to launch an app from the SDcard?

        • @S3ISOR: It seems to be an issue with this phone. Quite a lot of people including myself have been having the same problem.

Loading apps from the internal memory was the only solution for now. It seems to be random issue among the 530s.

        • @backer: I just turned it on and off again and all good. All my apps (except the Windows ones) are working fine from the SD card. I wonder what's causing your's not to?

        • @S3ISOR:
Thanks for checking. Could you report back if you notice the problem. I don't know what the issue but it seems to effect some people and not others (or else why isn't many other complaining about it as much).

I have tried 2 different SD cards.

      • Worth it. It's like the real deal now.

Plus you can get the Skype deal which the original version might not be eligible for.

Not much chance of a brick if you read the instructions and follow them closely. Just don't get a power outage.

Only difficulty I had was the part where you had to get the phone to detect by pressing the volume down and power keys. But second try it worked without a hitch, and didn't take long.

        • I accidentally bumped the USB cable half way through the flash and it stopped working. Thought I bricked the phone for sure.

I restarted everything again and it fixed the partition and re flashed again. All went well that time. Phew!

    • Thanks happychappy1! I just did this whole process, from backup phone —> download files —> flash. Took about 30 mins, and worked like a treat. Restoring from my back up now without any branding. Awesome! Can't believe how much fun I'm getting out of this $40 phone. :)

    • When I downloaded the firmware (section: DOWNLOAD THE PRODUCT CODE) Nokia DataPackageManager asks me "do you want to download also content files". I chose OK. Should I have?

      • +1

I did that and it was fine.

    • Works a treat!! Thank you!

    • Im getting this error:
0xFA001106: Signature check of FFU file fails. Reason(s): The FFU file is not correctly signed or not signed for this device.

Anyone else seen this? Or a workaround?

  • -2

Anyone know how to unlock the phone.
I installed a PC file transfer utility that requires phone 2B unlocked.

    • -1

Would someone mind explaining why I received the x3 negs for ->
"Anyone know how to unlock the phone. "
      Just curious?

      • +9

        Just gave you a +vote :)

There was 1 left at Kingsway, WA last night. They said it is not a usual stock item so not sure if it will be re-stocked.
Now to email Bat…I mean BagMan! ;)

    • +1

What's that in the sky? Its the Bag-signal!

    • Got the unlock code in couple of hours of sending the payment and IMEI. Great service BagMan!!

Plenty in Stock in Newly opened Point Cook Woolies, grabbed two… even Hoppers crossing ones got more. Got a call from QV Woolies as well. Seems Melbourne is getting fresh supplied this morning. Hope u can unite with ur bargain buy now ;-)

  • There are stock at Sylvania but need driver license and limit to one unit for each ID

  • Grabbed one of these locally, boost works fine with it as it's the Telstra network anyway, Skype gift card works fine too, not a bad deal all up
    Cheers

  • I dont know if this is useful, but after resetting the 530 phone (About/Reset), using my Aldi sim which just asked for a code on bootup. Now shows the 5bars and 3G symbol, and looks like its working properly.
    BUT
I cant get sms's or actully call out. 3G has dns error.
I set Aldi's sms center #, and set correct APN, but not actually is usable.

Any idea why it shows the phone & 3G symbols working, yet nothing actually works?

    • +2

I'd say it shows up because aldi use the Telstra network. But the phone will still have to be unlocked.

    • having no prob using aldi sim after unlocking.

  • Got 1 at ashfield nsw and they're having 1 left. However mine didn't come with a 4gb micro sd card

  • this phone is great fun at this price. getting a couple more for the kids - skype gift makes it even better.

  • Is there any more available in Melbourne?

  • +1

hey all, great deal! picked one up and thought i'd share this tip…if you go into accessibility mode there is a high contrast mode…put that on and i found it immensely improved readability of the menus etc.
really loving the windows interface..nice, clean and simple!

  • +1

I got a rain check from the front counter in Chermside this morning which is good for the next 12 months.

They may be getting some more in next week so will try again next weekend :)

  • -1

i got a rain check at one woolies tried again at another and they said they dont do rainchecks on mobile phones. does anyone know how to check the version? i wonder if it comes with windows 8.1 for the skype promo?

  • +7

Got one on the weekend simply to have a play with WP8.1
I'll keep the "device" versus "Windows" parts of the review separate..

The actual device itself is quite good for the price:
+ it's very fast + supports lots of networks and voice quality is as you'd expect.

There are some limitations as you'd expect.. - screen is dated, if you've never had a smartphone then you won't care, but if you're used to iphone 4+ you're going to notice.

Speaker is not loud, and unfortunately when it rings if you're unlucky enough to have it in a bag or flat on the desk it can really be quite soft. Vibrate helps, but not much..

Camera is below par, no auto back-light (great for saving power) and battery is quite small (1 day).
Again, I'm calling out limitations - keep in mind this is a <$100 device discounted down to <$40.

The "Windows" review on the other hand - ouch, the UI is very much a work in progress. I didn't find it intuitive and things like multitasking and even positioning the cursor in a text field was a difficult task. Search is weird - the same icon can search in-app (contextually) and globally, which I felt got confusing. Apps are limited too, but a lot of the 'major' ones are there.. that's not the UI's fault as such.

No Cortana yet for Australia, so I did not test that part. GPS worked well, offline maps took up a lot of space and the initial "update load" was a hefty 500mb. 4GB sd card was included and the way windows uses the sd card is actually better than androids, as you can be very granular as to what gets stored where both during download and afterwards.

It's remarkably better than the windows mobile back in the day, it's usable and it seems pretty stable - but it's still a step back from android/ios, for mine.

    • +1

You wont find the UI intuitive until you stop using it like an android or iPhone, then you may find it far more intuitive. Many features are not immediately obvious if you treat it like other OS's.

Cortana is available for Australia in alpha mode, but you have to remove branding or download 'preview for developers' app (which I think needs a subscription not sure) so you can update to the version as Telstra is slow . I have done this and have cortana.

Overall I think it is an amazing buy for $39

  • Just email bag_man waiting for the code now, ;)

  • I bought the 530 just for the Free 3 months of skype.

  • Got the second to last one at Westfield Belconnen ACT. Shall give it a spin when I get home!

        • ic. u are very nice

        • +1

@aiyoyo: Lucky me. Just bought one from the Rockdale Plaza store about an hour ago, thanks for aiyoyo's comments. There was none left in both Burwood and Ashfield. I did not ask how many stock left but I believe at least one as the lady asked me how many I wanted. Phone before you go and that's what I did. Good Luck.

  • +1

Still a few left in Joondalup, WA.

  • isn't it supposed to be on sale starting wednesday? why are people buying it already?

    • Oh dear

        • It was last week mate.

        • +1

Only other chance to get one is the one day big W sale on Saturday, same price.

  • bought one from BigW through price match as my local wollies were sold out. free orange cover included but no micro sd card was there.

How can we unlock this phone??
I saw Bagman can do it, but how to contact????

  • Quite happy. bought one today cost $39.50 and came with a simcard and it was loaded with $10 credit :)

    • didn't it end yesterday? is it still the same price this week?

      • Wondering the same.

        • I had a raincheck. Its $79.95 now fyi.

  • just unlocked mine by bagman! reliable source if anybody wants to unlock his lumia 530 :)

    • I unlocked mine yesterday, Sent payment to bagman at 3pm, and at 5:30pm got the unlock code. Thanks bagman GREAT service!

  • really curious on how our fella the Bagman does the unlocking.
could be easy and good side-job.

but above all, is this legit? they locked it for a reason, right?

    • If you can get a job at Vodafone and get access to their codes, there would be definite opportunities there.

Investigation: SD Card Included: Yes or No?

To those that received an SD card already inserted into the phone, is the phone Made in Vietnam or Made in China?

I've seen 3 Made in Vietnam models (Dark Grey with bonus Orange cover), and all 3 didn't have an SD card included.

However, the Made in China (White, with bonus Green cover) did have an included 4GB MicroSDHC card. The phone says it's Made in China, while there's nothing to indicate country of origin on the box (unlike the Made in Vietnam ones, which were clearly marked underneath the MAC address for the Wifi).

The expiry dates for all of them were either 14 or 16 Sept 2016.

    • Here: Made in Vietnam, grey with orange bonus and no sd card.

    • Liked the one I got for the mil so much purchased another from Woolies for me to play with & can confirm that the first one I had was made in China & had the card, the second I purchased was from Vietnam & didn't have one.

    • Here: Made in Vietnam, grey with orange bonus and no sd card.

      • +1

Made in China, Grey/Orange with 4gb SD card.

  • +1

Made in Vietnam, grey with orange cover and NO SD card…

…a 16GB SD card is on the way however, and hopefully bagmans unlock code will be arriving soon too….. and I went through the process of removing the Tel$tra branding earlier :)

    Geez, I did a lot today… I'm pooped!!!!

  • Thanks Bagman Phone(530) Successfully unlocked. Especially for great professionalism providing frequent updates .

  • +1 for Bagman unlocking this handset, fast response and perfect instructions.

  • Bagman delivered 2 unlock codes for Lumina 530 for me! Perfect service!

  • Thanks Bagman for unlocking the Nokia 530 phones. Good & Quick service.

  • My phone successfully unlock by Bagman 3 weeks ago.But this morning when i insert Simcard in and its not working on the phone and after i checked, i found my phone simcard slot was damage.Any idea what should i do now?Bring back to Woolworths for exchange? If this is the case, I may need to spend another $15 for phone unlock.Any suggestion guys?

  • I got my phones unlocked by Bagman, great response and quick service . Thanks OP and Bagman.

  • Thank you bagman, unlocked my 530! Great service!

  • mine dropped out of my pant pocket and the screen cracked making it useless to me. i was surprised it cracked at such a small drop i guess its the way it landed. anyone know where you can buy a new touch digitizer? would credit card purchase protection insurance cover breakage?

    • Might be cheaper and less hassle to just go and buy a new one. They are still half price at the moment at woolies.

  • Another vote for Bagman. I was stuffed around for 3 days by another service that failed to come up with a code, whereas Bagman delivered the code on the same day! Excellent service.

  • Bagman is no longer able to unlock Nokia 530s that are locked to Telstra.
