    • +3

May as well mention that it's this Saturday 8th Nov

  • will buy if i can find green

    • you can buy a replacement green backing case for $4.99. ive done this exact thing, since green looks awesome and I already have a green lumia 930.

makes a great offline spotify player, and social networking device :)

  • thx for this message

  • Does anyone have experience with this phone? Is the camera terrible?

    • +2

The 1st link in the description will lead you to 6 pages of info on this phone.

      • Yes but sometimes I find it more helpful to hear some personal experiences.

        • +4

That's what you will find if you follow the link.
Page 6 has a good review.

        • +1

Sorry- my bad. I thought you were referring to the specifications link.

    • +7

Yes, terrible screen, terrible camera. But who care, for only $39, you get a windows phone, a 3-month free international skype calls.

      • Thanks for that.

      • +6

terrible screen yes, terrible camera? not necessarily. 5MP is enough for some good pictures, provided you use some sort of external lighting (flashlight or external flash). i've taken some decent photos with it.

the fixed focus is a bit of an issue at times though. it's definitely more competent than taking photo's with an iPad.

    • +1

Camera is not good. Pictures are washed out But it costs $39 so what do you really expect

  • +30

damn, kicking myself for not saving the 50c

    • +4

There are plenty of woolies stores, you definitely save 50c on oil…..

    • +2

I dropped 10c today, still crying desperately… I cannot sleep tonight.

    • +1

I know how you feel man, that's one maccas cone we'll never get :(

  • +2

Great little phone for the price

  • OW price match?

    • +2

no, this one is locked to Telstra, OW selling the one is unlocked. or you can try your lucky.

  • +6

I bought I last time it was on sale at Woolworths. I bought it to play around with windows 8 but was quite impressed with the offerings. Screen and camera are a bit ordinary as others have mentioned.
But it takes SD card and the free GPS works great. You can use the GPS without data by downloading maps onto the card and use it as mp3 player.

Quite happy with it for $39.

  • Is it free to unlock? Thanks!

    • +1

No, It may cost you up to $100 to unlock it, but seems someone can do it for 15 bucks

      • Ahhh thanks for the reply, was hoping to take it over seas, but looks like might not be worth it.

      • +5

Bagman will unlock it for $15 just send $15 and imei number to his email with paypal and within 24 hours you have unlock code i just unlocked mine.

        • Really wow, that's great man, thanks!!

        • how to find bagman email, i have 2 of them to unlock.

        • +1

          @sajju:

read my post below and don't listen to srhardy

    • +2

I can vouch for the ozbargain user bagman.
I got this phone from woollies last week and he unlocked it for $15.

  • +2

The 3 month Skype subscription alone is $40 - so the phone is practically FREE!

  • +4

How the hell do they make a profit on this? Between the logistics, packaging, advertising, etc… how does Nokia sell $40 smartphones? Are they actually losing money just to get them into people's hands?

    • +5

sometimes the storage space is worth more than the products.

    • +4

      All depends on the accounting.

I know some companies do their promotions via the marketing budget (i.e. marketing pays for all the marketing and subsidizes the handsets for one off sales etc.) So now the marketing budget picks up the tab while the mobile department has sold their handsets at cost or whatever.

    • +8

      Telstra subsidise it I reckon

      • And Woolworths too

  • +7

"I told my kids that they will get this phone for xmas if they don't behave. I've never seen such well behaved children. "

    • +4

Guess they will get an iPhone 6

      • +2

when ever i say i will buy you iphone my son goes angry, he says i dont like iphone gimme any other but not iphone lol.

  • Do you get a bonus case cover at bigw like in the woolworths deal? it says bonus cover in woolworths catalogue so you get 2. I would pay the 50 cents extra and buy the deal at woolworths to get 2 covers instead of one

    • -1

This one doesn't seem to be locked however.

      • +2

How do you know its not locked? It says Telstra.

    • +1

Taking a second look at the bigw ad it seems that you do get 2 covers

Do you know if Woolworths or big w give you a micro SD card with the phone?

      • Just for the record, one bought by a friend in Lismore Shopping Centre New South Wales had a 4GB card inside. Seems to depend on region and batch whether you do or not. Good luck.

    • +1

if its like the woolworths deal - you get both an orange plastic back to swap out AND a black plastic swap out backing. and a 4GB micro SD card

      • I bought the Woollies deal and there was 2 covers but no SD card

        • Likewise!

        • +1

Mine had a 4GB SD micro SD card already in the phone. Next to where you put the sim card.

        • @mitchellp: lucky you. ..mine doesn't have a micro sd and it comes with 1 friking bright pixel

        • @puthpaul:
I bought a orange (or grey) one from Woolies last week - no SD card.
I bought a green (or white) one from BigW today, had a 4GB SD card.
So it may be colour related?

  • Damn, and I ran around woolworth's looking for these!

  • -1

Bought it in last deal, still struggling to unlock it. Paid 5.99$ to code-unlock.com, got msg next day that they can't unlock it. Said will pay refund in 7 days, when I reply that email requesting my refund in 12-24 hrs or I will go to paypal, guess what I got my refund within one hour.

I want to use it with Vodafone, anyone know cheaper way to unlock it ???

    • +1

Just make the $15 Paypal payment to [email protected] include the IMEI and your email with the payment. And within 24 hours you will have unlock code.

      • -3

        DONT DO THIS

unlocked it wont do the voda/optus 900mhz freq - it will just be an telstra 850mhz unlocked! Also the chances of you getting the code is very low and no refunds this time

        • +2

          @srhardy,

          Correction on both counts mate.

GSM network: 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz according to microsoft's specs.

I've got bagman to unlock 2x handsets, happily using them on the Vodafone network, clear as a bell.

          Cheers.

        • +1

Bagman sent me unlock code for mine the other day. I use Live Connected (Optus), works no problem at all

        • +1

srhardy lol you are a funny man so if you pay telstra $100 to unlock it do you think you will get a different unlock code " NO " .

        • Another Bagman unlock here, mine is working fine on Optus

  • @hellosarju: Talk to bagman

  • +6

$39 not bad even if you use it as a navigator. Nokia maps are the best.

    • -5

Maps are just maps. If they help you go from a to b, that's job done.

      • +4

the point is Nokia Here is completely free, has downloadable offline maps and works well

        • Google Maps is free, has offline caching and works too. Why is Nokia maps necessarily 'the best?' I've never used Nokia maps and I'm sure it's fine, but what makes it better?

        • +4

@Strand0410: Coming from a Nokia X6 (which had Nokia maps at the time, I believe HERE Maps is the rebranded name) to an HTC One X I was really disappointed with Google's offline option.

Caching when I used it could only get certain sizes by using a square to select the area you want to cache (it also expires after 30 days). It also does not contain any POI's or navigation features and you can't search the area you've cached (which was probably the deal breaker for me, trying to manually find a destination that you haven't looked up prior is no easy feat :P). So it's a really janky attempt at creating offline maps.

Nokia/HERE Maps on the other hand allows you to download map packs (they go by country iirc). It's a hefty download, but it means you get fully fledged map capabilities including drive navigation (through Here Drive+, the companion app), essentially functioning as a GPS without the requirement of any internet connection (obviously you won't get features such as live traffic updates though).

So all of this doesn't matter too much if you do have access to a data connection. But if you were like me before who only had 250mb of data a month or are going overseas then it might not be an option to use your data so freely.

I believe HERE is coming to Android though, so that should be good. It's the best in terms of offline capabilities, in regards to other map features it might be debatable (I didn't see any street view options, and need companion app HERE Transit for public transportation directions).

        • +1

@Astro551: Fair enough, I'll give it a spin when I get the chance (not that I even use Google Maps too often).

        • @Strand0410: Not only are the maps offline, but so are the addresses.

So if you are stuck outside of the range of mobile phone towers, and type in "27 park st sydney" then it will get you there.

    • +5

I bought one the other day to play around with Windows Phone rather than replacing my mobile. It really is a bargain at $40 despite the screen.

Gives you free offline WORLD maps and voice navigation and updates. Much better than buying a standalone GPS which costs more and only comes with one country map, although Nokia maps is now available for Android (in beta) also

Great music streamer. I subscribe to Rdio (Ozbargain deal) so music taken care of. The interface of Rdio on Windows Phone is actually not bad and on par with the iOS version

      Free Skype for 3 months!

Haven't noticed any lag at all.

To my surprise, it can even play Halo: Spartan Assault without noticeable lag. (Looks tiny on the screen though)

I do think it is a better entry level smartphone than the equivalent cheapest Android phone.

      • Agree for the price that this phone is unbeatable. I enjoyed using it though couldn't stand the maps. Also the lack of apps and/or basic implementation was a bummer of sorts. Others may have different experiences.

Re the maps being useful across the world, I downloaded the UK map. Then when I was in the UK and tried to use it, it said "this map is not licensed for use in this country." So actually not useful at all.

  • When does the sale start?

    • +2

      Saturday 8th November, mate!

      • Cheers :D

  • Any thoughts on window until Free unlocks might surface? Thinking to use just as a
nav and WiFi/homeline _skype out service.

  • +1

Battery utterly sux. Had to use gps and internet to look for a place today. Didn't have it on too long.. 15km. Also made 4x 3min calls. Batt dropped from 95% to 41% and was very warm. I use a batt app on to turn off data, locations and other apps afterwards.

For $40+$15 to unlock, is an OK transitional temp phone till I find my dream phone.

    • -2

thanks for feedback. Will pass this one. Too much hassle.

    • Well if you have it mostly idle with a handful of calls (15 x 2min calls) & have GPS & WIFI off and screen to LOW to MID.. battery should last more than a day. Good enough batt for taking & making calls throughout the day.

  • Does any one know if this will work with lycamobile (without unlocking it), since they use the telstra 3g network, or is it strictly telstra locked??

    • Telstra or Boost only
Source: Me trying it with a Lyca sim.
      Only $15 to unlock though

      • +1

        cheers

      • -2

May I know how to unlock for $15? Also is it dual-sim?

  • Is this dual sim?

  • Got the woolies deal, only downfall is I can't seem to enable cortana on it :(

  • Will it work with ALDImobile? I signed up to them today…

    • +1

It will if you pay Bagman $15.00 to unlock it.

    • +2

@rheo I got it to work with ALdiMob after receiving the unlock code from @Bagman..$15..Total cost of Phone comes out to be $55 and I think it is still cheap if you need a spare one…

  • Will long queue be there for this big sale tomorrow at 7:00am?

  • -2

Windows 8 phone OS is kind of nasty and non-intuitive POS. I bought the phone from the Woolworth $39.50 sale. After a few days i had problems accessing the store.

Apparently I had to reset my Hotmail account password just to get back on the store. Which of course requires the full validation process of emailing another account etc.

And it was impossible to set a password on the phone after you changed it unless you set the right time and date on your phone. You are not told this, simply there is no option to set a new password.

And it appears there is no way to change the time and date in the time and date settings unless disabled the automatic time and date.

W8 phone OS is a joke.

Wasted 45 minutes just to access the windows store.

  • Did anyone get one today?

    • +3

Picked one up this morning at opening, and they had a lot of stock there (Strathpine, QLD) with a fair few "on hold" for others. Don't know if that's allowed or not.

Also, I had to present ID to buy it because it's apparently mandatory if you wanna buy a phone with a sim card included (which I didn't know came with it). Got it for $39, got home and tried it out. It's actually not bad for a really cheap WP8 handset, very fast for it's price too. Might pick up another today if they still have stock. Came with a 4GB MicroSD, for anyone wondering.

      • +1

Yep it's the new "don't use this phone to blow us up" legislation from the old 9/11 stuff the Howard gov put in.

Used to get lotsa shadies trying to bulk order phones when I was at officeworks so I guess it helped.

    • Got one from QV Melb 10am where they had few left.
But where is the Skype credit ?

  • just bought one this morning about 7.10am at Big W Rockdale. pretty good phone for the price. comes with 4g micro SD inside and Telstra SIM with $10 credit. No Skype 3 month code found which was as mentioned from previous post. good enough for the kid as a school phone. wanna confirm that Aldi sim is working for this locked phone or not. Any one use Aldi sim for Telstra phone? cheers. BTW, there was about 10-15 at Rockdale this morning

    • Should work with Aldi sim, as they are a Telstra network.

      • I bought some for the family who all use Aldi and no go. Even went into a Telstra store, and the fella said its been locked down to particular operators within Telstra.

    • download skype gift app after 24 hours of activating your mobile phone.

  • Bunch of them at Eastgardens went this am. This phone is stuck on my door and connected to speakers via blue tooth. If I'm ever super desperate I can actually use the phone and Yeh 40 bucks for wifi home entertainment you just can't go wrong. Get your fill lads. They done funked up on this deal.. its too darn good.

    Reasons others were getting them-

    1. Some country folk needed Telstra reception and they were students with their mum.

    2. Old couple who just wanted a phone.

    3. Me and 2 dudes who were just gonna use it as a media hub.

Ps. Can't seem to find the magical 15 dollar man to unlock the phone….

Couple of technical notes that people might not know.

    1. Running on the older Telstra nextg network bands which are being rented to the shitties currently. Expect performance drops during the normal 2pm to 8 pm rush of commuters on their phones.

    2. Can technically be used on the voda and Optus 850 networks but may suffer performance issues as the original band for nextg was technically 750-800mhz.

    3. Nokia maps whilst not as colorful or useful as Google maps will indeed work offline in other countries which maps you've downloaded however it requires the silly "use of the phone" in the country you are wanting to use it in ie making a phone call for X amount of minutes. This should then allow the map software to not block you out of the country map you select.

    4. Bluetooth 4.0 isn't as functional as 4.2 but still it's 4!!!

    5. People who use the Microsoft network and it's services like xbox office and skydrive will indeed find this phone fun. Some of the xbox integration is pretty sweet.

    Hope this helps guys.

Also. No 3 month skype either here…
