Nintendo Wii U 8GB White Basic Pack - $297 + $7.50 Shipping @ EB Games (Online)

40

EB Games are having an online only "Rare Console Clearance".

They are selling the Wii U White Basic Pack (8GB model) for $297 and it seems to be $7.50 postage to metro areas making it a total of $304.50 delivered.

These basic packs seem to be a rare find these days, and the closest deal I've found is at KMart at the moment who have it in their catalogue for $339 this week.

Would anyone happen to know why the basic packs have been pretty damn rare/overpriced lately and when we might expect them to come back to the <200$ prices we were seeing ~6 months ago?

    • +2

Probably when the next Skylanders bundle becomes outdated.

  • -8

Way overpriced for a console which isn't very good

    • +4

Console is very good i love the gamepad its just the games coming out next year should already be out

    • +7

Have all 3 consoles and it is far and away the best at the moment and from next years releases does not look like ti will be changing

    • +2

      Define 'not very good'.

Check metacritic. Wii-U has dozens of exclusive games that get above 90. Xbone and PS4 have none between them? The only games that have scored above a 90 have been The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto…. But wait, those games weren't made natively next gen? Hmmm……

Hmm. Maybe good graphics don't make good games after all.

  • I find it really surprising how hard it is to find Wii U's anywhere. They seem to be rare, elusive and massively overpriced.

You'd think given the quality of the games (compared to the limited offerings from the compeition) there would be some level of demand.

    • Yes it's hard to find them because of the games that just came out.

    • +3

Err.. if they're hard to find, could it be because of the level of demand?

      • -4

Thanks lostn. Could you give me a quick refresher on how supply & demand work?

is at odds with your statement that

I find it really surprising how hard it is to find Wii U's anywhere. They seem to be rare, elusive and massively overpriced.

Stuff is expensive if they're in demand. If there's no demand, they don't go for that price. If they're hard to find, it would be because demand outstrips supply. That could be because too many people want it, or it could be because they don't make enough. But if there's a demand for it, there's no reason they wouldn't make more.

I know you were only being a smart arse but you've answered your own question.

        • Can't tell if sarcastic or serious…

    Hardly a bargain

Even just a month ago they were over $100 cheaper

    • +3

From the comments on that deal stock was quite limited .

      • +4

Yeah but you cant justify spending this much just on the console with no games and it's only 8GB, Better off spending $100 more and get premium with Mariokart cause premium users get bonuses like a point system that they can use to buy stuff with and basic users do not get this :)

        • +2

The point system will also end this year.

        • -1

@harlaqu:Really? I was just invited to join like a week ago Are you talking about the old one or this one?
          https://p.nintendo.net/premium/

        • @TRENT86: Taken from that page.

Please note: the deadline for earning points in the Nintendo Network Premium reward programme is 31st December 2014. Only eligible purchases or eligible download codes used in Nintendo eShop for Wii U before 31st December 2014 will qualify for this promotion. The deadline to exchange your points for an activation code is 31st March 2015.

        • @Dswal: So the whole thing was just a promotion and not an ongoing deal? If so that sucks, I thought finally Nintendo offering a new points system lol

        • @TRENT86: The email that went out a week or so ago was to remind people that it was there and to cash in before it ended.

        • @TRENT86: Unfortunately yeah. They have been running it since the consoles release. I don't understand why they are shutting it down though. Seems… Unnecessary.

        • This, even without the point system. $399 for the Premium with Mario Kart 8 and Just Dance 2015 is still a better deal, IMO.

  • @ Trent. The one you linked. Says that it ends on the 31st of December and all points must be cashed in by march 2015.

  • Are all these retailers stupid or what?

Christmas is just around the corner, and these $200+ deals for a basic is hardly enticing.

    • +1

That's nothing Target has socks and undies on their front cover on the catalogue 1 weeks before xmas LOL

      • +4

I'm offended that they'd even advertise the southern necessity, let alone on the front page.

And off to change.org I go

  • +1

Move along people, nothing to see here.

    • yeah i dont get it.. i got a basic one in july for 199 with a couple of games.

      • That's a good deal, I got it for $180 with no games.

      • I got it for $179 with Skylanders and Nintendoland. I'm surprised the basic pack with no extras is so expensive. I'd rather get the black 32GB one if this is how much a white goes for now.

  • Got mine for $250 last year.

  • That seems awfully expensive to me, didn't DSE offload the pro edition for less than that a while back?

  • +2

Yeah, I'm keen and am looking for a Wii U but the current pricing isn't appealing.

Especially considering that the PS4 and XB1 have had regular (and significant) reductions.

The last few times I saw the Wii U on OZB, I wasn't looking to purchase one (I know, shame on me - it was a BARGAIN). Ah well, like the Eneloop deals I kept missing out on, eventually the price will be right.

Thanks for the effort OP, appreciated - but I'll pass on this one.

  • I feel ripped off but I went for this one… OzBargain: http:/www.ozbargain.com.au/node/174575 couldn't see a deal anywhere and waited so long I may not even receive this before Christmas. Hate getting ripped off… damn u santa :)

  • +2

I guess I got it wrong - my bad. I posted this because to me it looks like a great deal amongst the current crop of Wii U offers, and the $100 saving over the premium pack can make a big difference to some people at Christmas. I agree if you're happy to take your chances and wait for another sub $200 deal and manage to find one in stock then that's the best option.

    • It's not a horrible deal mate - and you didn't get anything 'wrong' so nothing to apologise for here.

At the moment it's pretty good but everyone's comparing it to the Wii U Skylanders bundles and the significantly cheaper prices it's been at in the past.

I think most of us who are looking for one are probably holding out for those great discounts again. (I am, especially on the Premium).

      • They never have enough stock. If you wait for the sub $200 you might find yourself disappointed.

  • $300 on a Christmas gift?? Insanity.

    • some of us have to use whatever excuse we can… "the kids will love it"

      • When I was a kid, I would typically get a pair of socks from my grandmother, and maybe a toy car or truck from my parents. Spending anything over $100 was unheard of, for anyone.

        • Oh the joys of inflation!

        • @chibbingus:

Not really. Prices of most toys have remained static over the past 20-25 years. Better exchange rates, 22% sales tax being replaced with GST, and more stuff made in China now. Lego for example used to cost a fortune back in the 80s - I would argue that it's slightly cheaper now (when on sale).

        • @MrZ Yeah these days (oh geez, I say that like I'm ancient….I'm only 30!!!) when I see people with trolley loads of toys & talking about spending $1000 on each kid for Christmas, I'm like, WTF?? & people wonder why kids are such spoilt rotten little shits?? It's because they're given all this stuff, & never told "no", or "don't do that", or taught to behave…..

        • -1

@amy_c: I know, right? It's a shame they don't have good parents like yours, so that they can grow up into bitter, grumbling adults.

          rolls eyes

  • Hi there, it's already boxing day tomorrow but no better deals on this game console yet? It's supposed to be my present for the kids this school break. =(

    • Too late now. There were a few opportunities to get a good deal on Wii U. You should have jumped on when you had the chance. They'll have to settle for something else now.

Nintendo I heard was going to discontinue the white model, so it will be hard to find another bargain on that one. The black model is not cheap enough to be attractive.
