  • Great deal me thinks.

Going for about $800.00 elsewhere, but guess will have to wait till satrurday morning.

Probably a limited stock loss-leader. Good price for those who can get it…good luck!

  • +3

Wow… a Sony Smart TV for a dollar cheaper than the "dumb" Soniq 48" that JB Hifi sells! Thanks @singlefished!

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/hd-televisio…

The Sony would have to be far better than the Soniq 48" I bought earlier this year, which has been disappointing. Most stuff looks fine but some HD sources become extremely grainy, and many dark scenes have awful red tones. If I could somehow swap this for the Sony, I'd be ecstatic! Hopefully I can find a friend who wants to buy an eight month old Soniq with sixteen month warranty left for about $300. The Soniq cost $399 on special, and spending an extra $200 would be a worthy upgrade. Will start calling around in the morning.

    • Other than the sound, the soniq isn't actually all that bad.

Make sure you follow the adjustments found in the link below:
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2209158&p…

Also, you can get $20 cash rebate from the gov.

      • +2

The picture quality wouldn't even remotely be close to the Sony.

      • @SevenSmurfs - those Whirlpool suggestions do improve the Soniq 48" somewhat, it's not that bad but it really isn't that good either! My Soniq 42" looks fantastic, but the 48" is a completely different kettle of fish. Mind you, my brother had a 40" Sony that looked fantastic but bought a 46" Sony to replace it, and it's been rather disappointing too. Despite spending hours playing around with settings, we just can't get skin tones looking right, and nothing looks very natural. Maybe this 48" "cheapy" Sony isn't much good either? Who knows… Only way to know is to try it.

  • Wish I could use $50 offer too

Hi Guys, which is a better buy? We are confused in deciding now :(

Sony 48inch FHD LED LCD Smart TV KDL48W600B for $498 OR
Sony 50inch Smart TV KDL50W700B $699 (at DOJ)

    • Personally I would go for the 48", save $200 .

    • If you want to use the TV for playing games which are best played at a higher FPS such as Call of Duty, you will probably be better off buying the 50 inch, because 100Hz = 100FPS, but since HDMI cables max out at 60FPS, you won't be able to play at 100 FPS, but at 60 FPS.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

      • You won't see any difference between a 50hz or 100hz TV. Both will output at 60hz on video game consoles.

        • How will a 50Hz output at 60Hz?

        • @BobbyJ: 50hz is just a standard that TV manufacturers use in Australia. All 50hz TVs can output at 60hz just fine. But anyway for gaming consoles they will always output at 60hz so a 100hz (120hz) TV won't do anything for them, in fact all these fast motion gimmicks introduce input lag so it's best to turn them all off.

        • +1

          @Yuri Lowell:
Oh ok, thanks. Guess the 48 inch is better for gaming.
Sorry for the wrong info electricbluee.

    • I was wondering the same thing. The only difference I could see is "Motion Flow XR 200" vs "Motion Flow XR 400".

      • +1

The 50" has a 100Hz refresh rate, the 48" has a 50Hz refresh rate. The 48" is better for gaming because a 100Hz will introduce input lag when gaming. The 50" may make sports look better because it is 100Hz hence the motion will flow smoother. Some people like 100Hz, some people like 50Hz.

  • +1

Apart from the size. I think the major different is the 600b is 50hz and 700b is 100hz

100hz for an extra $200? Worth it ?

    • yeah, noticed that difference, what do you guys say?

EDIT: oops that DOJ seems to be out of stock :(

    • +8

I just learned something interesting…TV stations push out 50Hz, so watching TV on a 100Hz TV is useless. And bluray DVD and normal DVD and Playstation and Xbox games only do 50-60HZ, so having a 100Hz TV will be useless and not fully used.

Only some 3D bluray does 100HZ, so buying a 100Hz TV is only useful for those who intend to watch 3D stuff.

In addition, HDMI Cables only support max 50Hz anyway, so that's a bottleneck as well to fully use 100Hz. For example, a typical HDMI Cable will support FullHD 1080P 50Hz. So having a 100Hz TV is useless as the bottleneck will be in the DVDs, games and HDMI cable etc which max out at 50-60Hz.

So the question arises….are 100Hz TV's one of the biggest marketing scams to hit the TV industry?

      • +1

The 100Hz is not really a scam, since it 'guesses' what image will be in between two frames, and it does a few backlight things to improve the motion. Check this link out. Honestly, I would say get the 50Hz, just because some people find 100Hz unnatural. Also, the 48 inch, has Motionflow XR 200 which is newer than the Motionflow XR 400 which the 50 inch has. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@syaugi If you got your information from here please read the entire thread. It has some helpful information which explains why 100Hz will make a difference.

        • yup correct, i got the information from there but didn't read another post

        • @syaugi:
Oh okay, I thought the same when I opened that page, but later figured out that 100Hz makes a difference.

        • @BobbyJ:

So for additional $200 100Hz worth?

        • +3

It is a negative feature to be turned off if you have particular sensitivity to frame rates.

Motion interpolation on televisions is in my opinion.. awful.

Whilst I wouldn't doubt that the tv is providing a constant 100hz, it most certainly is not successfully interpolating every moment. It looks as if your frame rate is fluctuating. I find it incredibly irritating. Constant barrages of smooth, then rough, smooth then rough.

Not my cup of tea, but if you can handle it - or even like it, fair enough - just know - it is a partially BS that you're getting 100hz. You're only really getting an approximation of 100hz when that motion looks smooth. The rest of the time, your television is failing to deal with the guessing.

        • @electricbluee:
Are you going to game on it? I am planning on buying the 48 inch because I am not going to be playing games that require 60 FPS. So unless your hardcore gaming I'd say get the 48 inch, spend the $200 somewhere else.

        • @LordRichington:
          I agree although I haven't used a 100Hz, I've heard that some people don't like it.

        • @BobbyJ: No game on it so i guess im going with 48inch TV then. Worth waiting for Sat (27/12) for alternative?

        • @electricbluee:
Good to know, I wouldn't know about waiting till Saturday, what's on Saturday?

  • I just learned something interesting…TV stations push out 50Hz, so watching TV on a 100Hz TV is useless. And bluray DVD and normal DVD and Playstation and Xbox games only do 50-60HZ, so having a 100Hz TV will be useless and not fully used.

    • Well if you're going to buy a 100Hz TV and connect it to a 100Hz 3D Blueray player, make sure you actually get a 3D TV

  • +1

Excellent deal - easily the best value 48-50inch TV out there. My only gripe is that Sony TVs sometimes don't have great USB playback (i.e. wont be able to play all .avi's downloaded etc) but apart from that, if you can get your hands on one this is a bargain.

    • that's true, although it does support mkv on most bravia TV's, avi is a container format and depending on how the video is encoded (eg 1080p ac3 audio) if may not play using the inbuilt video player. I generally use freemake software to encode videos that won't play natively on the Sony, so it's generally not a big deal.

  • +1

at this rate, I'm going to have about 4 new televisions by the end of the year.

Can you run PLEX on this TV?

  • Does anyone know if The good guys accept Westfield Gift Eftpos cards ?

    • I used a Westfield Gift Card at Caltex last night so I'm assuming yes.

The best deal on a TV ever. Damn, just a few days ago I bought a 48 inch Samsung non smart TV for $630.

  • Crazy price, got this around 770 mark around august. Hope 28 degree price protection this deal.

  • The best deal indeed.

  • -1

Can you run PLEX on this TV?

    • +1

Found this on another forum, don't use plex myself but it may be useful info.

"You download and install Plex server app on your computer where your media files are. You specify the directory where you want it to scan for files.

When you want to stream, just start the server program on your PC and then on your smart tv, you should see the Plex media server under "Connected Devices". That's what it's called on my 2013 Sony TV, it might be different. The TV should find the server automatically when it's running, you don't need to install anything on the TV. Your media should show up on your TV and just select what you want to watch.

This is assuming you have gone through the network setup process on your TV.

The setup is pretty easy and straight forward."

  • Seems like an awesome deal.

  • -1

A lot of discussion here simplifying the two TVs of the previous $699 50w700 and this $498 48w600 down to "do you want 100hz or 50hz".

This is isn't really looking at it right.

I'm not going go in much detail, you can read for yourself, but the 50w700 has a contrast raio of 4310:1 versus the 48w600 with 3470:1, that is a big difference already. You don't need to be playing games or "100hz content" to know which of the two has a better panel that translates to better everyday picture quality.

So if you were to ask me, hands down the larger 50w700. The price difference is hardly anything when you consider this not including delivery (usually $50) and no ability to get cashrewards or 5% MEbank paypass.

    • +3

Not including delivery lol? I think most Australian own a car an live within an reasonable distance to a good guys can save an easy $50. $200 not really worth it for a contrast ratio, panel size is essentially the same and to notice the difference between picture quality you'd have to go in store rather than use numbers which don't show the whole picture. Is there anyone who has significant experience with both these TVs?

      • I have trouble getting a 50 in my car.. unboxed.

Can't imagine the craziness of getting a bigger box in.

        (impreza)

        • Do the seats fold down I usually slide em in that way and use a couple of blankets to secure. Otherwise taxi or bring the ute and hope it doesn't rain.

      • Well you decide if $200 is big fish for you, this is just my opinion.

The reviews speak for themselves and the story is pretty clear, likewise there is a big enough difference for such a small price in my eyes.

Just saying simplifying your choice down to 100hz vs 50hz is a pretty dumb way to choose a TV.

        • I might get the better one because it includes the wall mount. I want to hang mine and those brackets cost $50-100 anyway from what I can see. My 50' full HD plasma Panasonic viera which I got for $999 in 2010 is still going strong I just want something with less power consumption. In terms of picture quality over the years the change hasn't been huge however.

  • What a gift to the world.

    • get the 48" one
      best bang for ur bucks

        • Just picked up mine as well.

  • +4

Thanks for posting OP, just picked mine up from chadstone, was at the loading bay when someone said they got the second last one so there was about 15 units guaging by the line i saw for it.

Bit of a small rant, maybe its because I work in retail but I can't understand why good deals turn people into complete spastics.

I rolled up 5 minutes before the good guys opened at 8am and some tossers were ranting about lining up because they got there at 6:30am (there was about 15 people by 8am). Soon as the roller door is half open people are ducking and rolling to get in..sigh.

I let them have their little drama queen moment and just walked to the back counter and got a TV.

Yes its boxing day and deals are fun, but don't let it turn you into a little shithead.

    Retail employee.

  • I bought this on Dec 8th and have paid $760 at Good Guys. I rang them today only to be told that their 30 day price guarantee applies to competitors pricing and not theirs. Any suggestions please.

    • +2

      try contact your credit card
they usually got a Price Protection Scheme

  • Just checked out the Taylor's lakes store. Sadly they're all out. Having my fingers crossed for home delivery.

  • just bought from TGG Thomastown, there is only 1 left …

  • Got one from Booval Ipswich, they had around 6-8? A small stack.

30 or so people waiting though, hard to imagine they have any left!

  • Sold 3 year old sony 46inch for $450 from Gumtree few days back(lol).
Got the 48 inch from TGG Brighton rather than 42 inch with 3D in HN today, still plenty left.
Manager said 80 units ready this morning.
It's a shame didnt know can order from ebay and local pickup to get $10 cash back. Anyway probably have to wait until they are ready for pickup, watching now, satisfied!

Any wall mounts for this TV or is it pretty hard to mount?

      • $150 for a bit of metal I may as well upgrade to the $700 soby TV with mount included

        • what about thiswall mount?

        • My understanding is that it comes with a wall mount bracket. check the reviews. can someone here confirm?

        • +1

          @Yowiefied:

No wall mount bracket in the box…

    • Looking to buy this tv with the sole purpose of mounting it on the wall in a smallish living room.

Anyone who has bought this tv yet know of a cheap mount that works with it?

  • Just brought home the Sony 48inch, only to set it up and find the top left portion of the screen not working correctly. There aren't any external cracks on the glass, seems internal. I tried calling the Nunawading store, but just got a recorded message saying to contact them during business hours. Do you think I'll get a refund, or a replacement unit?

    • -1

I seriously doubt TGG will do the right thing, my experience is TGG don't honour consumer code unless the product is totally dead and hence they would lose outright in court if they refused to replace or refund it. Depends on the operator but most are really bad to deal with in "after sales" situations as they lose money and they don't like losing money. (e.g. they become TBG, The Bad Guys) Be prepared to cancel the credit card transaction if they give you trouble. If your lucky and get cooperation I'd go refund because based on my own experience I believe they sell refurb or seconds stock as new (after I disassembled a couple products I bought from them as new after that failed), so I'd go for a refund particulalry on this one and try getting the same unit from someone other than TGG. Good luck and try a better retailer next time.

      • +1

I second adverse experiences with TGG in the past, so have no reason from my personal experiences to doubt @paulojr's experience.

I've found the service is racist, the staff lie and the management refuse to honour their word, yet others may have different experiences.

        • Yeh they used to be pretty good but they seem to be turning into Harvey Norman these days. JB Hifi is pretty bad as well it almost self serve cause there are no staff to help you.

        • -1

interesting you mention the racism. I hit this too, actually got something in writing from a legal authority where TGG's chosen repair people had stated they refused to "attend the customer" as they didn't like the customer. I'm sure they never thought I'd see that correspondance but basically they didn't like who we were and therefore this explains why they installed second hand parts then decided not to come back out when the parts failed immediately after they left.

Anyway TGG is a horrible, horrible retailer

  • This is a deal which will be talked about for generations to come. The new benchmark is $500.

  • Now it is sold out on eBay.

  • Ordered one on ebay for in-store pick up. Said it'll be available for pickup around 12:30pm. Got a call, saying they don't have any stock at the store (on ebay said in-stock) and said they'll be bringing them down from another store tomorrow. Let's hope they don't screw me over and say it's sold out tomorrow. :(

  • My local TGG isn't open until tomorrow..
I gotta get in early to make sure they don't put all the stock aside for ebay sales..

    • Mine is not open till tomorrow; thats why i ordered via ebay too. Why dont you order via ebay? You got gift cards?

      • Yup.
        Gift cards to burn.

  • Got one this morning at lutwyche store amongst several other ozbargainers. Haven't set it up yet. Hope you all got on board!!

  • It's still available on eBay Store. I bought one just a minute ago.

  • TGG Malaga still have some as far as a I know, me and 2 other customers snapped a few up this morning.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but this has standard VESA mounts, whereas the Sony 50" KDL50W700B has a custom mounting solution, yes?

    • If it has vesa I would jump on this as there are a lot more third party reasonable priced options. Had no confirmation on the mounting capacity of this model other than the $150 Sony mount so havnt pulled the trigger as this is going on a wall.

      • standard vesa mount, I just bought a third party vesa mount and it fits perfect.

      • Whoops, sorry for not replying, never saw the notification.

The website says it did so I took the plunge and it does. My Atdec bracket fit straight on —- although a word of warning, the plate covers pretty much every single input, including the power, except for HDMI and antenna. I had to unscrew it to get the power plug in. I have the older version which has a solid plate.

Might want to look at getting either the official Sony one which is a bunch of stands basically or something like this Brateck one
