Resellers (JBHIFI and Harvey Norman) also have this special on.

    • Might be better off buying it from the MS store if they're still giving away the $100 MS voucher so you can get a type cover 3 for around $50 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/182828)

Damn this is tempting. XPS 12 or this?

      • +1

You don't get the $100 voucher as well

        • $100 voucher is available to students only? Or everyone

        • @ATangk: All I know is it's not available to the general public, don't know about students.

        • +1

Students get the $100 voucher still it seems, as well as the 10% discount (the 10% discount always applies to students though I think, this does NOT stack with this other 10% offer). They can also get the type cover for $135, which hopefully means you could get it for $35 after using the voucher :)

          http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/cat/Student-…

        • @Alzori:
Correct. This 10% off replaces the $100 voucher, except for students.

        • @Alzori: Spoilt brat students lol

      • +1

XPS 13's atleast are built like shit.

Source: have about 10 of these dogs at work, but makes me mistrust any XPS

        • +2

I have an XPS 13.. no issues. Best laptop I've owned.

        • +1

The 2015 model is getting very good reviews - including for build quality. What is the problem you're experiencing?

        • +2

With previous ones (not 2015 model).

About 30% failure rate on the power connector (the wires inside are weak and break, you can see it in the plug).

A number of motherboard failures, the screens become loose over time and wobble far more then how they were shipped, also had the screen itself develop vertical line faults.

        • +3

@Evil-Elmo: Probably the older model, I have seen some negative reviews on the older models. Though be fair it's normal for products to have bad reviews. So I didn't look into them much

        • XPS 13 2015 model is getting very good reviews. If it is the Haswell model you're referring to then yeah I've heard that majority of people are getting the coil whine issue

        • Im in the same boat with about 15 at my work. They have the worst build quality for a "corporate" laptop. They should never have been sold to businesses.

I discovered that its the hinge screws that become loose over time. If you tighten them up then it fixes the problem.

        • It will be interesting to see if the new XPS 13s end up holding up better. The design looks different and Dell is a fundamentally different company as it has gone private (that might mean better QC). But that kind of experience would still be enough to put me off it.

        • -1

          @Hellman109:

Dell don't make laptops. Quanta, Compal, Wistron and Foxconn do. Always best to ignore brand and treat each model independently:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_laptop_brands_and_manuf…

  • Any places doing it with free shipping?

    • -3

get it at Harvey Norman for cheaper $, just pick one up there. Surely one is close by.

      • +2

I'd rather give the extra $20-$25 to Micro$oft than Gerry. Just sayin. I imagine after sales support and warranty from Microsoft would probably be better than dealing with the petulant arrogant staff at your typical HN store.

        • +7

I came here to see who negged. Not flaming, but everytime I go to HN for an Ozbargain bargain, I am charged the normal price and I have to tell them to look up the price on the interent after a little argument. Happened about 5 times in a row. Not a nice feeling.

        • @abacus:
Fair enough. I saw an advert on TV that was cheaper than this one. Trent86 already posted that deal. (he put the link below as well.

        • @abacus: if your talking about buying in store That might be because they are like DSE And have online only sales and specials, so if you go instore it's the original price

        • Thanks, but they were catalogue specials, but displayed prices were the old ones.

        • Microsoft is the manufacturer, so if you want to go though MS for the warrenty in our country you are more that welcome to.

          @TRENT86:

HN is a franchise model. Online and in store are independent. I've called the a few times before I've left home. Normally they will put stock aside for me on the floor to make it easier for me (I'll just ask a sales person in store in the right department).

        • +1

@This Guy: I always talk to MS for warranty issue, they are really decent. They have the best service that I've ever had in Australia.

        • +1

          @AznMitch:

They really are. I've hand a few Windows licence issues over the years. A quick call has solved every problem.

        • +1

@This Guy: In terms of Surface Pro, they replaced my power adaptor in 3 days (so I called them on Monday and it arrived Thursday) and I didn't have to do a thing other than calling them. I think it's the best service I've ever had in Australia. I think there are few companies that I trust that I will have no problem getting things serviced, MS is definitely one of them.

      • HN Troll

      • Also technically cheaper from Microsoft with the additional 5% cashback, so I fail to see how your neg is even justified.

    • +1

Er, doesn't Microsoft store have free shipping?

  • Another month and I'd be close enough to my overseas trip to claim GST

    • +2

layby. most places will print the receipt on your final day / pickup. Otherwise, it could be on layby for 3 months, with your receipt being 3 months old… greatly reducing your warranty.

I did that with Teds… I was a fortnight of hitting the TRS time limit… so I put a camera which was on sale (and cheaper than DCW) on layby and the guy said he'll print me a final tax invoice when I pick it up in a few weeks.

  • 25GB6 I7 $1394.10 Usually $1549
    256GB i7 $1646.10 Usually $1829

what is the difference between the two, looks to me the same cup and ram

  • only if it was 10% off of the student price as well :P

    • Students gets a $100 Microsoft gift card on top of the 10% currently which is a pretty good deal. 8gb/256gb seems the sweet spot model for future proofing for uni.

  • 25GB6 I7 $1394.10 Usually $1549

    This is 256gb i5.

          @TRENT86:

Ahh, hidden in the detail, I even did a search and could find it.

But people still vote this one as a deal and not yours??

          Good going Trent.

        • +1

          @PVA:
i meant could not find it.

        • @PVA: Don't know why that comment warranted a neg… Let me even it.

        • +2

          @TheOneWhoKnocks:
Thanks. I don't get it either but negs don't bother me.

        • @PVA:

All your posts are positive for me. I generally upvote you too. But I have a giant minus next to your name?!?

    • +3

They're actually all cheaper at HN…

      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/promos/cheapthursdayfeb2015/m…

someone also posted it but it was removed as a dupe

Ye, my post got pulled up for a dupe. Didn't see TRENT's.

    • +2

But isn't it cheaper here after 5% cash back from cash rewards?

    • I can think of many reasons why you wouldn't want to buy from Harvey Norman.

  • Does anyone know if these are still plagued with Wifi issues? Or has that all be resolved now?

    • My wife and I both have SP3s (she's got an i5, I've got an i7) and the WIFI is fine on both of them (2.4GHz and 5GHz).

  • -2
    • I think it's much cheaper at Walmart.

      • +1

Oops! did not realise it was US website.

        • and when you convert the $ it is actually more expensive than Australia.

  • Are there any good deals around for the SP2? I've got the SP3 and it's just a tab too big for me to use as a mobile tablet at work. My Surface RT is just the right size for taking into meetings but would prefer to graduate from an ARM device….

    • +1

I think most of the vendors are out of stock… My quick search on Staticice shows $919 at Kogan for 256GB unit.

    • +7

…you can get a pretty high quality laptop for that price!

which is pretty much what these are (only a little more versatile). :)

    • +3

Because they're high-end laptops, not just "tablets".

    • Chalk and cheese.

    • +4

These are actually cheap if you consider similar grade ultrabooks.

    • +1

they are a high end laptop, that why the price. compare it to a high end mac air (except the air doesnt have a touch screen), not an ipad.

      • -2

Why did you neg the deal ? o.0

        • +1

Just because it's cheaper at Harvey Norman as per Trent's post.
Trent has put the link in above.

  • Is this a sign that Surface Pro 4 is coming??

    • +1

it's competition, jbhifi started it, HN Followed, then MS Followed them :)

      • I don't Microsoft is competing with its own products…most likely SP4 soon.

        • They do it every time HN Or Jbhifi put them on special

        • +3

All these specials are vendor/supplier funded. It's the first time these have been sold at 10% off barring the student discount. I doubt there will be a SP4 for a little while yet.

        • The rumours are actually that MS will announce release date on March 2 to March 6 in Game Developers Conference (GDC 2015). Given the promotion expires a few days before then, that's mighty suspicious to me. Could be just a rumour though, we'll see.

          http://www.codeandcommand.com/microsoft-surface-pro-4-releas…

    • +1

SP3 wasn't available in Australia until August 28. It was launched in the US in June - so we can expect the same similar time frame for the SP4.

    • +1

      Not until Windows 10.

    • Yes. The Surface Pro has been on sale approximately a month or two before each major update.

This update may only be a more energy efficient CPU (Broadwell/5th gen). That said Microsoft was far quicker with the first CPU upgrade (Ivy Bridge [Surface Pro 1] to Haswell [Surface Pro 2]) so this upgrade might be a little more significant.

      • The rumours I've been hearing (yes, I am a very gossipy person who visits tech forum all the time), suggested that it's going to be released in 3Q~4Q this year and it's not going to be major update. MS is apparently considering reducing the price because Broadwell M cores are slower than current gen CPUs (though this would allow MS to make them fanless). It's just a rumour, also considering that I've seen them few months ago, a lot details might've changed. I thought I'd bring it up because it sounded interesting.

  • i've decided it's time to upgrade to one of these, i just need to know from someone who has one, is the i5 with 4gb of ram okay?

    i just can't justify spending more than $1200 so it's 4gb or nothing…

    • +1

Like any PC depends on what you intend to use it for. 4Gb would suffice for most people, gaming, CAD, intensive graphics/video editing are probably a few of the areas it would fall down in with only 4Gb.

      • +1

I think the GPU fails first. The i5 and i7 models throttle the GPU when under a high load(gaming). I can play cod on low settings but after about 5 minutes the frames drop a bit and you can feel it heating up quite good. For everyday use like word processing or watching YT or movies etc it is amazing.

        • +1

I think it is possible to use them for gaming, but I really think heavy gaming's going to damage the internals. I used to play LOL on Surface Pro, yes, it works but it heats up so much. You cannot clean the fan on the Surface Pro line, so it's going to get dust accumulated in it. So I really think heavy gaming shouldn't be done on these laptop/tablet hybrids. Though, it's just my 2c and I love my Surface Pro a lot (and Surface Pro 3 looks amazing).

        • -1

@AznMitch: I agree. They aren't built for that. Good for older games. Runs Warcraft 3 max settings like a champ.

        • @snagseb: I agree with you that. I personally don't think heat's going to do Surface any good.

  • Just bought one off Microsoft i5 1088 great price wouldn't buy time of day off Gerry rude arogant staff no thanks sorry gerry(not)

    • just did the same but added a cover as well, i've already bought one thing at harvey norman this decade and i still feel sick about it :-)

anyway, with the 5% cashback on the surface (plus maybe 3% on the cover but i'm hoping for 5% as well) it actually works out cheaper.

  • -1

I didn't realise how lucky I was to get this for $997 a few months back(i5 128gb). Great little beast. Wish the keyboard was a bit more sturdy though.

  • Anyone got / going to get the i3? Just wondering how would be for uni (e.g., notetaking in Onenote, and using Word)? Don't really need the HDD space as I've got a desktop and iPad for multimedia.

    • -1

It will do all that and more no sweat. Plus you got the pen for one note.

  • Does anyone know when this offer expires?

    • "Hurry, offer ends on 23rd February!"

  • Regarding Cashrewards, when will I see my cash back for this promotion into my account?

    • has anyone got their cashrewards for this yet? they don't normally take so long with their confirmation email.

BTW I friggin' love this tablet, it's everything i always wanted my ipad to be.

  • Either Toll are incredibly cautious re: ETA or I won't be seeing my SP3 for a while :-)

    Shipment Date Fri 20/02/2015
    Pickup Depot MELBOURNE
    Delivery Depot LAUNCESTON
    ETA Date Tue 3/03/2015

    • It's Toll - they took nearly a week to move it 40km from pickup to my place.
