  • Can anyone report what this looks like on a tv via a chromecast?

Keen to weigh up getting this subscription + chromecast, or the watchafl stream again… dont really want to shell out $40 for a chromecast if its terrible quality.

    • Not terrible - definitely watchable. I'm doing the subscription + chromecast this year and looking forward to it. Last year I didn't have the Chromecast so just used a 7" tablet which was pretty good too.

If you can get a Chromecast at a good price I'd so go for it - it's great value not just for the footy too.

I can tell you it looked awful from my HTC One (M7) output via MHL to my 50", streaming via WiFi with a pretty good internet connection.
I hope they've improved the service this year, but I doubt it.

      • Try a newer device - i find there is a considerable amount of quality lost from casting from an old v new device - but that is with Chromecast using castscreen.

        • Really? That's weird as the M7 is 1080p and has wireless N. I would have thought it was capable of receiving a decent quality stream (and outputting that via MHL).

I have a Galaxy Tab S now so I'll give it another go this year.

        • @legiong:

Oh if the stream to the phone was poor than that's an AFL server problem. If the on streaming is poor then that would be the device not being powerful enough.

agreed i've tried every tweak over the years.. chromecast, mhl.. iPad aircast.. and none were as good as some of the pirates years before afl tv who had the web streams doh! hopefully tho the ozbargain fantasy football free annual subscription from a month ago makes the product at least free… why we can't pay for high res quality to our 2k devices then stream to tv if we want.. exactly as NFL NBA does in the USA… none of this gimped worse than SD content… just awful it's like they took an MP4 and mixed it with a cam… actually it looks worse than a decent torrent cam. #50shadesofAFL.cam ffs

If last year was anything to go by it's terrible quality because it's designed to be shown on a 7" tablet. The digital delivery deal the AFL sold actually restricts the broadcast quality to be well below SD broadcast resolution.

You're better off using a tablet and having it sitting a few feet in front of you.

Not great for me and drops out at the worst times. I'm using a Google Nexus 10 but it's probably more a sign of poor internet speeds (of course we're only 9km from Sydney CBD but we live in Australia where high-speed internet is a dream).

      • No, it was definitely on their end sometimes, as I would disconnect my wifi, and 4G would still keep dropping out the same way. Usually fixed in under 10 minutes, but that 10 minutes is near 100% on my frustration scale. Probably happened on under half the games, 1-2 times during those games, so most of the time it was working fine.

The ozbargainer inside me is battling the urge to just go Foxtel this year, but with HD, recording/pause ability and other decent sports in HD popping up now. I don't know if I can hold out anymore!

        • Yeah, it's tempting. I think I'm probably going to save the dollars though for one more year but if it doesn't improve - at least stop dropping out during games - I'll have to also hand over too much cash to Foxtel.

Any news on those free AFL Live Passes from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/180774 ?

    • i sent them an email and never got anything back :(

    • +1

I have gotten about 10 emails from the Fantasy website that I've filled my league, as 1 persons seems to drop out every now and then, and another person jumps in and fills it.

Hopefully I'm still eligible for the pass.

From what everyone else is saying, they will announce the winners in March

      • +2

What winners? Thought it was first 10000 leagues…

        • Well, yeah. You know what I mean.

    • +1

  • They seem to have these regularly. I'm gonna hold off 'til the end of NAB Cup, so get more subs time for the ACTUAL season.
    Good find though. :-)

    • +1

The good thing about this is that NAB challenge isn't on free to air at all so it's either a live pass or Foxtel

      • Is there a possibly illegal streaming website?

        • Yeah there are a fair few around. They're usually pretty rubbish though - 240p and stuttery. Not like the cricket where you can get HD streams.

      • Anything bar fox, Thanks' Op.

  • I've got a LTE Nexus 7 with a Telstra Pre-paid card in it.

Does anyone know if this data counts towards my quota? I know Telstra un-meter it for some services but I'm not sure about pre-paid.

I could use WiFi but my ADSL at home is fairly poor whereas 4G is fantastic.

    • +1

It was un-metered last time. I assume it'd be the same again.

"No data charges when watching AFL or NRL live via the Telstra mobile network" - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/159765

      • From what I rememebr, prepaid is metered and post paid is not.

        • nup prepaid has always been unmetered… or else i'd not of had a telstra prepaid all these years :) apart from owning my devices.
but definitely afl live is unmetered on prepaid..and all the sports are..

  • -6

NAB cup - like anyone watch that!

    • +10

You underestimate how much I've missed footy in the off season.

      • +7

mis-understood how serious I take Supercoach

      • Can't wait for footy to start.

  • +1

when can the 4 week period commence - if i hold off as long as possible, do i get the 1st 4 weeks of H&A free ?

  • Is there a way to watch from PC? say from browser or something? windows app?

I've got my HTPC directly plugged into my TV and want to take advantage of this but it says just iOS devices and android???

  • +1

Will this work for people who had a free pass last year?

I got a free pass early last year, and I couldn't get another free one later in the year with a different code.

    • +1

I was able to use 2 free passes last year. I think one was 'Telstra specific' which somehow got around the "one only" loophole. I've successfully signed up again using this new code.

  • +2

Why would anyone pay $90 for an annual pass when you can cover pretty much the whole footy season in 5 monthly passes for $75…

    • Including finals? 6 x $15 = $90 which will get you the whole season.

      • +2

Say your in Melbourne and all finals are live on free to air there wouldn't necessarily be the need to use the live pass. Each to their own.

        • +1

Unless you want to watch them on your phone away from a TV with an FTA aerial connection.

  • +7

If you already have a VPN (Netflix customer)(or even Hola), the NAB Cup is also free using the international AFL service. http://watchafl.afl.com.au/ They stream this in 720p rather than the pixelated local version.

I too am waiting news from the Fantasy League deal…

    • Is H&A free for international AFL service?

      • +1

nope, $139 USD for the season pass. Pretty bloody steep!

edit: weird. I just checked it then having got an email from them. Its $149 AUD… a heck of a lot better than $139 USD. I wonder if its cheaper depending on the country you're VPN'ing from?

    • that's great to know.. are there any tricks with signup and type of credit card and assume u need to use the vpn the whole time ur using service etc ?
720p would be so much better than garbage they serve up which based on current QHD phablets let alone streaming to tv is gonna look awful.

      • +1

They take australian credit cards, just use your VPN provider. If you don't have one and want a free alternative, try using Hola Unblocker (can be slow) for your browser or if using a tablet, open the Hola app and then use watchafl app. The Hola app should run in the background..

        • yup use private internet access for vpn so will definitely prob try out a 1 month package then buy whole season or just bite the bullet esp once when free afl live comes out and it doesn't chromecast at even SD!

  • +2

Watchafl actually better than channel 7 IMO

    • Agreed. Watchafl is great quality streaming from my iphone to my Apple TV

  • When does the code expire? I Realy hope I get my free afl live season pass from fantasy. Didn't say anything about ballot or draw but now seems this could be likely.

  • So how does Hola work? is it just a browser addon and you enable it, go to watchafl.afl.com.au then you can stream 720p after logging in with your free pass?

  • I just signed up. I've missed the footy so much!!! Don't have Foxtel, so can't wait to watch it for free on my iPad!! :D

  • Has anyone tried to watch watchafl from two devices at the same time? Like could my bro and I share like we do Netflix (paid for the extra device access)?

  • Ok so got the pass, now how do you watch it", do you have to use an app, can you watch it from a pc, surely it shouldn't be this hard.

    • seems to only be live in the apps, not on the PC.

quality is pretty crap on an iPad, not sure if I'd want to actually pay for this.

      • Ok thanks', I was hoping it would work on a Laptop.

        • you can watch the replays on a PC

    • FWIW - it works great on your laptop/pc streaming through http://watchafl.afl.com.au/

The only trick is to make sure you're not coming from an Australian IP address (AKA get a VPN)

Streaming now on my desktop with no issues

  • +1

For those interested looks like the Nab cup trial is still going. Don't tell anyone.

    • Just worked out the trials are 4 weeks.
      So mine expires tomorrow
