  • Tempted by the avh-2650bt… Anyone have one that can comment? Particularly around android connectivity

    • I used to have a Chinese double din 7" touchscreen in my Hilux but sold it and bought a single din Pioneer DEH-X8500DAB. Touchscreens are a pain when you're driving & want to adjust the volume.
I also have a 7" tablet that lives in my backpack, it goes everywhere with me.
They both cost less than $357.00 and can do so much more, the DAB is a massive step up over FM.
Pioneer head units are pretty awesome.

      • You can use the pioneer steering wheel remote as well

I think was $35 on eBay

      • I want a double din so I can have the reversing camera as well (without adding another window mount).

Really interested in the appradio unchained mod too, but finding info on what systems actually work with it is difficult

I've bought & installed three AVH-X3600DABs over the last year, all from JB-Hifi sales posted here on OzBargain :)

They're a higher end model than the 2650 but look to share the same design & screen etc. Lukes comment above about touchscreens is true, they can be difficult to use while driving however the main operations can be done from the physical buttons to the left of the screen plus if you have steering wheel controls then you really don't need to touch the unit at all anyway!

They're excellent units and work flawlessly streaming audio via Bluetooth from Android devices and I assume also via Apple devices too but they can do SO much more than basic streaming if you start looking into MirrorLink type add-ons but I warn you, there are so many variables involved with getting that to work properly so be sure to triple-check to see if everything will work with each other before buying any of the extras OK.

      • I'm curious on how the steering wheel controls work, I read the manual (2650) and there is no mention of a CAN bus adapter or anything or how you wire it up. Do you know how it works? Can I just splice it into the steering wheel control loom and have them work?

        • I just used an adaptor cable to fit the three of my units. One in a 2010 Corolla, another in a 2010 SX4 and another (just last week) into a similar aged Lancer. Had to get fascia and wiring adaptor kits for all three cars and they all included steering wheel adaptors. Not cheap though… the Corolla and SX4 fascia & wiring kits cost around $125-$150 extra and the Lancer cost a whopping $200 due to the fascia being much larger and including the AC vents! All available on eBay but some from OS as the Aussie prices were WAY too high.

Makes a 'cheap' Head Unit not so cheap afterall but on the flipside it can make your older model car feel brand new too!

        • Ouch, did you not consider my much cheaper option?
A single din dab stereo may have slotted straight in & then get a tablet which isn't stuck in the car and has a lot more functions.
I use the tablet through bluetooth for playing music.

@luke73: Yep, I thought about that 10+ years ago in previous cars but the problem with a lot of newer cars including the Corolla and the Suzuki is that they didn't have single-DIN head units to begin with so a fascia kit was always going to be required. The Corolla had a quasi double-DIN unit (some custom size slightly wider or narrower than double-DIN) and the Suzuki & Lancer both had those 'integrated' type head units so a fascia kit would be required to install even a single-DIN unit.

The fascia kit was only about half the cost anyway… the loom & steering wheel adaptors were the other half. I used to fit head units nearly every month for friends & family and used to go the ol' solder route. Took many many hours but resulted in a stupidly neat, tidy & uber-reliable install however my time is worth more to me now so spending $75 on an adaptor cable to fit a new head unit in less than 15-20 minutes makes much more sense :) Pity fitting the DAB antenna adds 30 minutes to that :(

      • Just missed out on the last 3600 sale and haven't seen anything remotely close since! :(

Yeah, tell me about it. Even after all these years there isn't much around with DAB+ and I can't believe JB dropped them after the last sale, grrrr. I have so many more friends who want them in their cars but don't want to pay more than the sale price. Oh well, 1st world problems ;)

        • @SteveAndBelle: my local jb still has em… For $599 :)

        • @newtz: Oh cool! No longer online so that must be a leftover. Maybe you could beg them to sell it to you for the sale price? Hey, nothing to lose!

        • @SteveAndBelle: What was the sale price?

        • +1

@gizmojo: I paid $373.10 each for my two back in early 2014 but got the one for my friend for a car-azy $298 back in December as per this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/174482

          @newtz:

There is a new model replacing the "3600". It is the AVH-3700DAB. With the feature enhancements that take place over time (eg. supported Bluetooth features, supported media file formats, supported smartphone features) it is probably worth paying a bit more for the latest model. As the cost of installation is high, cost differences in head units may be less significant.

Pioneer DEH-X8700DAB, AVH-3700DAB and AVH-X5700DAB all support DAB+ while having Pioneer's best Bluetooth support features.

@SteveAndBelle: Cheers, thanks for the info.

      • from JB-Hifi sales posted here on OzBargain :)

Curious to know what prices any of these were and better still, see a link to the posts. I couldn't find any through search.

        Edit: Answered, thanks @SteveAndBelle

    • Note: Neither the DEH-X4650BT or the Pioneer AVH-X2650BT have DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcast +) so you won't be able to benefit from digital radio with these. Actually that was one of the reasons I haven't bought in the current sale.

One more thing in case anyone doesn't already know: Signing up to the Supercheap "Club+ Plus" for $5 will get you $10 credit towards purchases.

The Sony MEXN4050BT would be a better buy at $109 compared to the Pioneer DEH-X4650BT if you want better integration with smartphones and tablets. The remote app for the Sony allows you to control most, if not all of the settings so you can potentially install the unit out of sight (glovebox or boot) and then just make a fascia for your favourite tablet in place of the standard radio for example. Plenty of Nexus 7 builds for cars using this type of setup. And the cost is similar compared to buying a two din unit, with the tablet setup obviously has more possibilities and features.

I'm just waiting for a sony headunit with DAB to be on sale! I'll definitely would jump in then!

    • There has been this one at JB for a while - Sony Xplod CDXDAB500U $126.00 plus delivery.
      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/gps-car-audio/sony/sony-xplod-cdxd…
But no Bluetooth, which is stupid.

      • Yeah, agreed, without bluetooth and the app remote feature on the head unit, the build will not work. DAB is nice to have, future proofing a setup that one might use for a few years to come. That said, there's nothing stopping one upgrading the headunit in the future.

    • Thanks for the ideas - I'm installing the Sony MEXN4050BT.

      • Good luck! let us know how you go!

  • I have one in my hilux.
Cant speak higher of the build and features and now cost!
Thinking of putting one in my boat

  • Hi all just want to know how hard it is to install the double din $129 pioneer into a Toyota Avalon 3001 model csx mcx10R?

Is it better to have it installed professionally and how much would that cost ?

    • +2

A true ozbargainer should never pay for head unit installation. Google is ur friend… Just DIY… It's not rocket science… ;-)
