Woolworths Brand Cage Eggs $1.00 Per 12 (Save 60%) - [Prahran/Hawksburn VIC]

11310

Hi All,

Ethically or, because my GF gets mad if I buy them (or a combination of both) I don't buy caged eggs, but a bargain is a bargain and everyone's moral compass is their own.

Just got home from Woolworths in Prahran and they are selling the Woolworths brand 12 Cage Eggs for $1.00

Other stores I am not sure.

Sorry I did not get a chance to take a photo or check the expiry, but they had around 100 or so cartons available.

Love, Tafe.

Great price, but the cost is too high

    • I see what you did there.

Ethically negging this deal, nothing personal

Bruce Lee secret is to eat caged eggs? I'm heading to the store now!

  • +4

seriously if we all stop buying caged eggs eventually farmers will be forced to make their eggs free range

    • +7

let me edit that for you in this real world we live in. (not meaing to be a smartarse)

seriously if we all stop buying caged eggs eventually farmers will be forced to re-define what is free-range.

(which they have partly already done!!)

Cage eggs are evil. You could have been born a chicken, instead, you are a human with the brain to make change. Use it.

    • +8

I am my father's sperm and my mother's ova. I don't think I could have been born a chicken.

      • you could be caged by a superior alien race and forced to poop nuggets

Ozbargain. Come for the bargains, stay for the TED talk!

    But is there free wifi?

  • I wonder if this is where the eggs come from, and why they are cheap right now? http://www.theage.com.au/environment/animals/chicken-farmer-…

  • Youtube caged chickens and take a look at what you are doing / eating, it's brutal.

    • +1

Other people kill animals so I can eat them. Life is brutal.

btw, jesus is a jewish fyi and I believe he has no prob eating halal foods

      • All jesus eats is either imagination or dirt.

        Take your pick.

(Ok, I'm against caged eggs too, but Tommy Wiseau making a chicken noise is too funny not to post)

    • Cheap cheap?

  • +2

I don't think negging based on you not choosing to consume the product is valid.

Find me eggs cheaper and then feel free to neg.

  • +3

Thank you Tafe for submitting this deal and backing it up with your eloquent and logical arguments. Not to say that people should buy caged eggs, but I do wonder whether those who are so vehemently against them are as thoughtful with everything else they consume. Judging from the comments here, it doesn't appear to be the case.

  • +4

I registered purely to give you an upvote.

  • Neg due to ethical reasons. Most of what needs to be said has already been said.

Though, I may be able to add one thing to the discussion; While free range eggs are highly unlikely to ever be as cheap as caged eggs, economies of scale tells us that as more people that buy them, costs will be reduced and prices will come down. If we all invest in free range eggs we can have happier chickens and better value! If you can afford it, supporting this less cruel industry will be beneficial for chickens and humans alike.

  • Great deal but have to neg this because cage egg :(

  • +2

Why I do agree cage eggs are cruel there isn't any type of regulation for the industry. So how can I be sure my definition of free range matches that of the seller? A hen may not live in a cage but that doesn't mean it ever sees sunlight

  • Has anyone seen that video where they literally put the baby male chicks alive in a blender and turn it on :(

  • All hens would have pain when laying eggs. Should buy free pain eggs????

  • $1 is a bargain. Check the normal price, it's like a 70% discount. People go mental when there's only 10% off apple products, so how is this not are bargain price.

  • +2

Ethics aside, the price is a good one.
The eggs are no of a lesser quality than usual, all stores are just receiving an abundance as way of compensation for the shortage that hit about 6 months ago.
Stores are relatively free to adjust pricing as they need to in order to clear stock to reduce wastage.

Thank you for sharing. Glad a majority of OzBargainers have shown appreciation for your efforts.

Be quick to discuss thoughts on ethics with others but slow to judge others who do not agree.

For the record, I do not support factory farming but not obnoxious enough to definitively say anyone who buys products from such methods are unethical or evil.

    +1 for the deal.
    -1 for the industry.

Upvoted for the effort of listing a bargain and for the pro free range crowd (myself included) promoting discussion on the topic

Good deal, horrible process, down vote as result.

    Vegan here.

I obviously don't eat any eggs, free range or no. However it is true that there is a lot of hypocrisy and double standards regarding animal welfare practices. I don't agree with animal shelters keeping cats and dogs alive by feeding them dead cows - its simply killing one animal to keep another alive, and usually the abattoir kills its animals much less tenderly than an animal shelter would.

Likewise with the live export trade. Australians get upset over how Muslims kill "our" cows (exactly why we should care more when an "Australian" cow is incompetently hacked to death escapes me), but the fact is that a cow slaughtered in Indonesia still lives a better life than a pig raised on the chain in Australia.

Battery (egg) and broiler (meat) chickens both lead woeful lives, but at least the broiler chickens can roam around their shed. However it is true that intensively raised chicken meat has a much lower carbon footprint than pasture animals. The fact is that there simply isn't sufficient pasture in the world to feed our population on grass-raised beef, without displacing cereal grains that we need to keep six billion people alive.

My 2 cents - try and eat more seafood lower down the food chain - oysters, prawns, stuff like that. Try and eat more vegetable protein. Stay away from factory farmed pork, sow stalls are truly terrible things. See here:- http://www.aussiepigs.com/piggeries If you are too cheap to buy free range eggs, then please opt for barn laid eggs as at least the animals have much more freedom of movement than they would have in a cage.

If you do have to eat meat, make it chicken rather than beef or pork (much lesser carbon footprint) - and again try for chicken meat that is as ethically sourced as possible.

    • -1

Meat eater here. Obviously, I eat meat. Why? Because I'm not superstitious. I don't believe the way an animal dies has any effect on my life. However, I do try to eat less meat - beef in particular - because it is perhaps the most effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Temperature changes caused by humans are a real threat. Who cares? This deal is about eggs.

      • +1

that's a shell of an argument

        • it was meant to be ridiculous. see last line: this deal is about eggs, not meat!

        • +1

          @tomkun01: it's OK - I was yolking too

    • Serious question, not looking for a fight:

I once looked after a friend's two very friendly chooks for 5 weeks, cheerfully collecting their eggs each morning. Far from suffering, they had the best 5 weeks of their lives, dining on the best food they ever knew - indeed, each egg worked out to be eye-wateringly expensive to me.

So: what ethical objections do vegans have to eating eggs?

      • +2

i don't particularly object to that scenario, in fact I have told my non vegan wife that she should get a couple of retired battery hens for the backyard. It's much more pleasant for the chickens and the fact is that backyards are inherently wasteful - perfectly viable agricultural land laying fallow for no reason. A much better way of sourcing your eggs too.

Of course, in the egg business the male chicks are simply discarded, and eggs are still a relatively expensive way of sourcing protein (as you acknowledge) compared to vegetable sources.

If I were to consume animal protein it would probably be oysters. They have plenty of useful minerals, it seems likely that they cannot feel pain in any meaningful sense, and their carbon footprint is very light.

    • have to say i haven't encountered a vegan so articulate, rational and respectful in their opinion. it's refreshing in this sea of judgemental hysterics :)

Here we go again. As I said in the previous caged eggs deal, People seems to care more about animal cruelty than human cruelty. I still waiting to see any Apple deal got such a high neg votes or debate because of this.

  • +3

Won't neg this - not so sanctimonious and self-righteous as to dictate other people’s moral decisions.

I’m not a vegetarian, and I love bargains.

But at the top of my list of “NOPE NOPE NOPE” items are eggs laid by chooks who live short and miserable lives of suffering in the space of an A4 sheet of paper.

  • if you have the choice and disposable income to buy free range eggs only, good for you. others will only buy what they can afford — they've got bigger problems than caring about being judged by opinionated internet blowhards.

so neg this if it makes you feel better…wouldn't want the self-righteous to be miserable now, would we? ;)

    • -4

      opinionated internet blowhards

Clicked on tdw's user profile. He's posted 2475 comments, and yet talks about "opinionated internet blowhards".

      Hmm …

      • +3

lol the good old "# of comments" routine

go on then, tell us what those 2475+ comments i've made actually correlates to in regards to my personal character?

and if you've read all my 2475+ comments, you would have learned that i'm a she not a he. cos if you're going the play the [wo]man instead of the ball, you'd only end up with egg on your face getting that wrong :D

        • -5

Sorry that I got your gender wrong, tdw, but life is too short to get into weird online tit-for-tat with trolls.

Our brief encounter is now ended.

        • @mikeham: troller's remorse eh? too bad that you started something and couldn't finish it but at least you know when to cut your losses ;)

still curious what the number of comments i've made in 5.5 years of ozbargain has anything to do with this caged eggs debate. if you ever change your mind….sighs wistfully

  • A deal is a deal

  • Funny how hens in Australia are treated better and have more rights than kids in Africa/third world countries.

In the mean time, time for a good cholesterol boost. You mad?
