Whole table got food poisoning last time we went. Reported to QLD environmental and health services.

Last time we got the chicken grill to share between 3 people - we all felt real sick not long after. Eaters beware, especially ingesting such a large amount of chicken…

      • I'd be a bit wary of the grill dishes too since they're a cook it yourself item. Only had it one time, and the kitchen ended up cooking it for us cos it was taking a while on the little gas burners, plus we were tight on space on the table with a few kids near the naked flames/hot metal.

    • +1

But was it worth it? ;)

  • Unlimited but limited to 90 minutes.

    • +1

What, were you expecting unlimited time?

      • -1

I just find the marketing funny. Unlimited? No.

This is the correct spruik to use

        90 mins of fried chicken
90 mins of home made lemon ice tea
90 mins of Korean side dishes

        • +4

But you can't eat 90 minutes of fried chicken, you can only eat for 90 minutes.

        • +5

Not sure what your point is. The 90 minute time limit gives context to the unlimited quantity of food. Are you suggesting that the use of "unlimited" in advertising/marketing must mean unlimited in every sense? E.g. unlimited calls/sms in mobile phone plans are unlimited in the context of a monthly time limit. So by your logic the correct spruik there should be

          one calendar month of calls
          one calendar month of SMSes

          ?

        • @Aquaius:

          haha you got me!!

        • +5

          @quop:

I was being facetious, thanks for posting it is actually a reasonable deal and 90 mins of 'unlimited' chicken wings is more than enough for anyone.

But still not unlimited in my view :)

        • @skimmermilk:

          more than enough for anyone.
But still not unlimited in my view :)

So (still) not enough for you then ;)

You remember what happened when Homer Simpson went to the "All you can eat buffet"?
      "he's an eating machine…"

  • -7

Alternatively, at that price point, one could get 18 pieces of succulent KFC on tuesday and then have a buffet at home any day of the week.(benchtop toaster oven required for reheating to optimum crispiness @ 180°C)

    • +4

Yeah, because KFC vs KFC is a fair comparison ;)

    • +3

Is this really a valid reason for downvoting? They're two completely different foods?

    • +3

But what if you can eat more than 18 pieces?

    • +1

I wonder whether you have tried Korean style marinated deep fired chicken? Well….you won't try to compare it with KFC any more after you try that.

      They are impeccable!!

    • +6

korean trumps kentucky on all counts

  • If you go, make sure the chicken is cooked and not rushed.

  • +1

This restaurant consistently gets some pretty damn high reviews!

Sunnybank is a fair bit of travelling for me… Will just have to stick to the buffalo wings from woolies deli - they're delish and much better than KFC!!!

  • After reading the OP's blog im hungry for some wings

  • +1

Maybe organise an ozbargain meet? :)

    • Go for it mate, I've had my turn :)

    • You mean an ozbargain meat?

  • +1

    Anything like this in Sydney

    • -1

I would've thought there'd be plenty of KFC joints in Sydney… perhaps you could pitch the concept and get them on board with what's happening in Brisbane ;)

      • +1

I was talking in regards to the fact 19.90 buffet of chicken… Do we any buffets like this in Sydney

        • -1

As was I. So let me try this again:

I would've thought there'd be plenty of KFC joints in Sydney… so since you don't know of any around that do a buffet like this deal perhaps you could pitch the concept to the existing KFC stores and get them on board with what's happening in Brisbane ;)

  • A typical all you can eat offers mixed cuisine (including fried chicken) for around $20. Not saying anything about the quality of the restaurant which I'm sure is very good but what is the usual price for this? Is it a deal because there are savings off the regular price or is it a deal because it is outstanding value in some way?

    • +2

Do you know of comparable all you can eat offers for ~$20 in the area? If so please enlighten me as I'd been keen to check them out. Most of the ones I know of are in the $25-30 range (or higher for the fancier places). No AYCE place I've been to has fried chicken that IMO compares to Korean fried chicken. Based on the stores I've been to in the southside of Brisbane, the typical usual price of Korean fried chicken is close to $2/piece for smaller quantities and gets closer to $1.50/piece for larger quantities. The cheapest KFC I know of is from 88 Topokki which does a special of 10 pieces (crispy/non-marinated) for $9.80. But that (and a few other stores) is pieces of chicken (many stores sell by half/whole chicken) so the sizes can vary considerably, vs Seoul Bistro's offering which is for chicken wings and more consistent size.

As for your specific questions all I know is that there is no usual price for this (yet?) as it's a new (and unique) offering and they've said the $19.90 is an introductory price. I guess it's a deal if ozbargainers at large vote it up as a deal. As for any AYCE type offer, the value varies depending on how much one can eat. FWIW my breakdown of what you get with the deal is:

      • beer battered chips with tomato sauce - $2.50, based on menu price of $5/bowl, shared between 2
      • Japanese cheese egg omelette - not on menu but I'd estimate at around $5-6 based on the price of similar items (pancakes/okonomiyaki) on the current and previous menus being in the range of $10.90-12.90, shared between 2
      • home made ice lemon tea - at least $3.50, based on menu price of $3.50 per cup/serve, so depends on how many serves you drink

So that's $11-12 worth of food at the usual prices, leaving $7.90-8.90 worth of food to be made up from the side dishes and chicken wings:

      • side dishes - let's say $0 as I don't know how to price these since they're not a separate menu item, though I believe they come free if you order Korean main dishes from the menu. I've only gotten them once when ordering the shared grill dish, and never when I've just ordered the wings (plus other non-Korean menu items).
      • fried chicken wings - the usual menu price for a small serve of the fried chicken wings is $9.90 for the crispy or $11.90 for the yangnyum / honey soy flavours. I don't know for sure how many wings you get in a small but guesstimate it at 5-6.

Total value so far on my reckoning: $20.90-23.90. So yes for me there's a definite saving and I (plus presumably others who have given this a positive vote) can see value in the deal, not to mention those customers (some new) who have gone and taken up the offer and voted with their wallet.

      • Thank you, exactly the kind of analysis I was trying to see

        • Cool. FWIW I managed 10 chicken wings which I believe to be about equivalent to the medium size chicken wing menu item, the usual price of which is $15.90 crispy / $17.90 yangnyum/honey soy. Would've been able to eat a few more if not for the pork ribs dish we had which wasn't part of the buffet, so I pretty much would've gotten my money's worth based on the wings alone.

  • +1

Not saying this doesn't cater to some people, but for the average person $10 worth of fried chicken at any Sunnybank joint (eg Bungle Bungle) is plenty… plus side dishes are always free at Korean restaurants.

    • +1

Except Bungle Bungle right? haha I love that place, but you don't get any kimchi or any other korean side dishes with any fried chicken :(

  • OMG I wished I lived in Brisbane now!!!!!!@!!!#!

  • Does the deal state it to be fried chicken or just fried chicken wings?

    • The deal states "fried chicken" earlier on and specifies wings later on:

Feel free to give us a call and let us know that you are coming so we can prepare enough wings and have them out to you in good time:)

  • Deal has been modified from 15/4. The parts that have changed are:

    OLD:

Japanese cheese egg omelette to share
Bowl of beer battered chips to share
All for a special introductory price $19.90

    NEW:

Chefs choice of two entrees to share between two people
    Chefs choice of dessert
All for a special introductory price $21.90 per person

The "Chefs choice" part makes it a bit harder to calculate a breakdown for comparison purposes, though you could say it's roughly pay $2/head more to add dessert.
