I am sure a Chinese Android or low end Windows phone would be a better choice now. These are pretty slow if on iOS7…

    • +1

Did the same upgrade from my old iPoo4 32GB to a mpie g7.

    • +3

I gave my dad my old iPhone 4 and he loves it. It depends on what you need. If you want a simple phone at high qauility, this is a good deal.

      • +1

he had the original iPhone before you give him your iPhone 4?

  • +13

iphone 4……. that was released in 2010?

  • +15

    yeahhhh… a 5yr old phone

    nah

  • +11

    similar specs to $20 prepaids…

    • -3

Except those prepaids can't access iOS app store, which is one of the main draw cards of the iPhone IMO
The slowness of this phone and the lack of 4G are what makes this a rather ordinary deal, not the comparison to cheap ass androids

      • +4

Access to the iOS app store. That is a drawcard how?

      • +5

where many of the apps no longer support the iphone 4

        • Anyone who's satisfied with old iron like an iPhone 4 can download the last compatible version of most apps. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201377

While iP4s are no speedsters nowadays, they were top-of-the-line back then, and the quality difference between them and a modern burner is still noticeable.

      • +1

Most apps would now require minimum iOS8 which this cannot run..

    • Examples please…

      • Facebook , Most banking Apps , youtube - and there just the apps on my phone that wouldnt let me download them

        • I meant examples of $20 prepaid phones…

        • @gokhanh:

sorry budy , i thought you mention what apps wont work

  • what size is the screen?

    • Size 3.5 inches (~54.0% screen-to-body ratio)
      Resolution 640 x 960 pixels (~330 ppi pixel density)

Here is a size comparison between 2 other phones (iPhone 6 and LG G2)

(you may require calibration to get a real 1:1 size on your monitor)

It'd be considered fairly small and fairly thick by today's phone standards.

      • Not everyone likes to carry phablets in their pockets

        • +1

Aging population and iPhone 6 sales figures would disagree. well not disagree, but would suggest bigger is more popular. Big smartphones is the trend. Especially amongst Asian demographic.

        • +6

          Especially amongst Asian demographic.

Yes, but not everybody in the world is an Asian.

I have an iPhone 4, iPhone 5 and Note 3. The iPhones BOTH kill the Samsung in usability when used for the primary purpose (a telephone).

The Note 3 is an absolute pain of a thing, very unwieldy. However I am aging and half blind, so I like the massive screen.

        • Don't know why this was downvoted. I agree thats why I still have my iphone 4

        • +3

          @robbiejuve:
The premise of the iphone apparently "kills" the Samsungs as a phone is a bit of a joke. The phone function itself dials in and out. Its like saying "My religion is better than yours.. because… " (no reason given).

Usability is pretty subjective and to date, no Iphone user has given a valid reason of why apparently their phone works better outside of "everyone else tjinks so"..

BTW.. I wouldnt even bargain bin this. I dont believe it even supports the latest IOS 8 and would be too damn slow even if it did on its 1Ghz Single core A9..

        • -2

@bchliu: you found nothing else but religion to give example ? Wow.

        • +1

@scrimshaw: I still have iphone 4 given its getting on, broken power button and painful home button, but the size is so much better than the newer phones, I don't carry a man bag around with me to carry a large phone in, I like to put my phone in my jeans or shorts pocket without bending them

        • @llama: How is the iPad mini with calls? Oh wait, it can't make calls. Try comparing apples with, er, apples. The Samsung Galaxy S5 far outperforms the iPhone 5.

        • +1

I had an iphone 4 for 3 years and found the call quality very disappointing in comparison to both the Nokia I had before and the HTC One I have now. Of all the things the iphone 4 can do I found being a telephone to be the weakest.

        • @Tiggrrrrr:

And yet no one buy it, spec can be higher.. But performance and usable, samsung woud never beat apple.. No matter how hard they tried..

        • but the phone is fairly big for the screen size, the plasting top and bottom of the screen is huge. Like skrimshaw said , the screen is about half the phones size, pretty poor.

  • +8

I don't see any reason to get an iPhone 4. You get no cred from any of the camps.

  • +1

I think this post must be troll baiting. Sir casm eh?

  • I'm thinking of getting an iPhone for the parents since they took to the ipad well, would this be a good option? It is low spec but will it have problems doing basic parents stuff? Ie maps, internet, phone, email and messaging?

    • +9

I don't see the deal here. Much better options with other phones.

      • -3

        Deal is, its cheap.
        Apples, not oranges mate.
Its like a deal for 1litre of full cream milk being cheap,
And you like soymilk in 2 litres… Hardly warrants a neg

      • +1

That's easy to say (I use android) but keep in mind that any item that is not easy to use in disregarded as "I'm to old to learn". The top of the line gps unit I brought for my parents that should have been user friendly is now collecting dust.. So priority is user friendly (anything less is wasted) then function as they need to catch up to the world..
What phones have been tried and tested with that? I honestly like to hear anyone else's experience with low tech adults and phones.

    • +1

I am still using it. It run everything pretty slow, but every basic stuff still running ok. I don't play games on phone, so no command on this. This is a 3g phone only though.

      • Thanks for the input! I know there are alot of better specs for a better price but if staying in the apple ecosystems is a necessary they this could be a affordable option.

        • I'd consider getting on gumtree and checking for some 4S stock. Had a glance and in my region there were a few at about this price. It's a faster phone and you may get a bit more shelf life out of one.

        • +2

Internet isn't really 'basic' anymore, even iPhone 5/5S have trouble rendering websites quickly these days.

It will be fine for texting, email, basic apps. But it will be quite slow for browser rendering.

For similar cash you can get a Moto G which would blow it out of the water.

        • +1

yes you can get a used 4s for about $150-$170.

      • I agree. Great little phone and works ok on ios7. A lot of money for this device but apple products are known for retaining their value.

      • i still have my old 3gs in the drawer. dont know what i should do with it.

        • Kill it with fire.

        • Sell it. You'd be surprised what you get for an idevice.

        • @ilikeit: there are still people out there want to buy an ages old iPhone? I will try:)

    • Dude, everything runs way too slow, multiple apps will constantly crash on iOS 7. Worth to spend a bit more on a 4s as they're considerably faster. A 5 would be best as they rock the new aspect ratio.

    • Cant beat a nokia windows phone for that purpose.

    • i think the small screen (3.5) mean keyboard etc is small, will be a bit troublesome for your parents.

what phone did they have? My parent went from a flip phone which they loved to a 3.7inch screen HTC. They find the keyboard a bit small (yes they can rotate the screen but they seem to forget to do that)

  • iPhone 4 thats like 4 gens down… still selling for $169. lol

  • +5

A lot of iPhone 4's also have issue with the home button

  • +16

The $40 Y550 was much better

    • +2

Yep runs rings around the iPhone 4

      • +1

I wouldnt say it runs rings around it, I have both and whilst the screen is larger on the Y550, the resolution on the iphone 4 is better. Plus this iphone has 32gb or storage which is not too shabby and beats the 4GB internal on the Y550, yes you can add an SD Card to the Y550 but there are issues still with the 4GB restriction. Main camera is better on the iPhone 4. Most games still run remarkably well on the iPhone 4. Y550 is 4G though which is a plus. Depends what you are after really.

        • I'm not sure about games running well, because I get sick of waiting for things to start up. It's subjective with this phone/deal. If you've never had a smartphone or are coming from an older phone (or similar phone at the time - stock Galaxy S2/Symbian phones) it's blazing fast and will be suitable for phone calls, messaging, chat applications, selfies - IMO the camera takes too long to start up to operate as a quick point and shoot and the same goes with navigating being delayed, slow to re-calibrate, and slow on 4G (if you don't have offline maps). On the other hand this is a temporary phone while my HTC One is away so because I've been spoiled before I know there is better out there. To put it into perspective if you see a good ADSL deal and you've got dial up it's a great choice, but if you've got NBN it might not be what you want.

        • You forgot that the Y550 is a quad core while the iPhone is a single core.

        • +1

          @technowiz11:

Yep, the Y550 also beats iphone 4 for playback of some video formats as well, so it really does depend on your needs as I said.

  • +6

I think a lot of you are missing the point. I've been an Android user for 3+ years for my mobile phones but this is a cheap way to get into the iOS ecosystem. My last iPhone was the iPhone 4 and it was a great phone. I got 3 days usage out of it without around 4 hours screen on time and about 8 hours of listening to music. Something that eludes me even with the Note series that has a battery 2x+ the capacity that the iPhone 4 had.

If you need certain services such as access to things like facetime, iMessage, findmyfriends and more for the cheapest price point, then this is pretty much it.

I wouldn't recommend an iPhone over the cheaper android options, but if you need/want one then this is a bargain.

    • I sold my iPhone 4 just under a year ago as it was getting too slow then.
I'm now using Android and must say I miss IOS but not enough to use an iPhone 4. I think that would most likely put someone off Apple TBH.

      • +2

Say you had a kid, or a grandparent that you wanted to keep track of with GPS, or facetime with them, or use imessage because you had invested in an iPhone 6, iPad or newer Macbook line. Then you would need an iDevice to do all that.

They don't need a fast phone and you are too cheap to spring for a more expensive option, then this would be your best bet.

    • Managed 10+ hours on screen time out of the Y550

      http://i57.tinypic.com/124jv9w.jpg

Yeah advantage of low res small screen. :)

        • How did you figure out your on screen time on your iPhone? I hope you not judging by the bs usage stats ios gives you. My air 2 today only managed 2 hours on screen time and was down to 28%. That is pissweak for the amount they cost.

        • @Ronnnie:

It was probably more than 4+ hours.

I have a very predictable routine. Spend 30+ minutes after the alarm has gone off in bed with 1 eye open surfing the net with my phone. Then about 30 minutes screen on time throughout the day to check emails and messages. Then ~30 minutes of surfing the web once I have gone to bed.

I would use the phone throughout the day to listen to music and I would get 3 days between charges for years.

I never updated past iOS 4.0. I still have my phone. It's at 65% after 12 days on standby standby at the moment. I just charge it once a month to make sure it's still clicking over and sometimes use it for music. If I only use it to listen to music then it will last 2 weeks of constantly playing music. It's how I break in my new ear phones.

          Pic for proof: http://imgur.com/AOC469e

It's my spare phone, and I am still amazed at what kind of battery life it gets ~5 years after I got it.

      • I just got 4 full days out of my Y550. Not a power user though.

        • +4

There's no comparison between the two, I don't know why anyone would pay 4 times the price for something inferior. Some people are like that.

    • +1

I totally agree. My feeling is you're generally best to decide which ecosystem you want to get yourself into, and only from there decide on the handset. There's no point having a faster phone if you aren't going to actually enjoy how its software functions. MS could release a phone thats four times quicker than the competition tomorrow, but I still wouldn't enjoy using it since the OS doesn't work for me. If you aren't too biased towards ones OS then thats good, you get a bit more in the way of options.

That said, given the phones as old as it is and you are dealing with a refurb anyway, I'd strongly lean towards going on gumtree and looking at a 4S model. The faster chip will give it that tiny bit more longevity and better performance, and slowly and surely Bluetooth 4 is becoming more and more useful to have too.

  • +1

    +1 for Sir Casm

    • Cheers mate, it got ozbargained…all sold out, over 2200 clicks, so not bad for the merchant, and a big middle finger to the critics in this thread!!

  • It comes down predominately to the user and what the user wants to do with their phone or tablet. I hear that iPhones just work and android doesn't as an example, but I have had more issues with idevices than Android ones. Examples that comes to mind are, putting flac files on to my idevice and it won't work easy like it does on Android out of the box. Copying a movie is a bigger pain in the ass too at first, it just doesn't easily work like on Android. Downloading torrents, can't do that on my idevice either, but easy on Android. Basic things like this are much more troublesome on idevices and just don't work easily like Android. However I'm sure many users don't do those types of things with their phones. :)

    • +1

That's Apple's way of preventing fragmentation I guess.

Make it as dumb and simplified as possible so that every user regardless of whether they are newb or 'power user' to go through the same steps to ensure consistency and ease of troubleshoooting. You can also ensure that the integration between services is seamless — since you have your music, videos and apps on iTunes, why not just use iTunes to manage everything?

Some people are also scared / resistant to change. If you design a software experience that's still the same as it was 6 years ago you can captivate a large market and get them to stay loyal to you because they're familiar with it. Just see how many people are familiar with the Windows Classic Start menu and how many despise the Metro interface.

Android is more flexible, but there are certain things that are undocumented and while the concept of plugging in your phone and browsing it as if it were a portable hard disk is a very familiar concept to you, some people panic as soon as they open the internal storage of their phone and see 2 drives within it, and then a mishmash of about 50 folders that are cryptically named inside the SD card. On an iDevice all that information is already categorized according to filetypes within iTunes, so there's less confusion overall.

  • +3

I bought an iphone 4 for my mother 2 months ago as she was having too much trouble with the sony one i bought her . She's happy now the iphone is simple and easy to use for her , and i was quite surprised how smooth ios is.

4 year old tech. Peeps go crazy for it on eBay
    Y?

  • +6

Only apple i will ever buy is from the fruit shop.

  • Wtf?

Terrible value. The Huawei Y550 smashes this any day for 1/5 the price.

    • Terrible value.

Did you forget which company makes iStuff?

    • 4GB vs 32GB, worse camera, half the resolution and no iOS.

      • +7

"and no iOS." Thats a plus for the Y550.

    • The Huawei Y550 smashes this any day for 1/5 the price.

Nah, the Huewei isn't even close.

      • +6

Very true the Y550 is so far ahead it isnt even a contest.

        • +3

I'm sure I'm gonna be super neg'ed of any ozbargain points again but the Y550 is inferior to the much outdated iPhone 4.

          Here's why:

App storage space, camera quality, screen resolution, screen quality. Build quality. AA games ports are better on iOS. I am talking about how games run smoothly on similar hardware.

You guys won't realise this but the y550 also only supports 2 finger touch. Any more than that and it won't recognise touches properly.

The Y550 is a fantastic android phone for the price and usability of Huawei's customisations. Eg. Double tap vol for camera - even when phone is locked. Good battery life.

        • +3

          @dtnvong:

Have you tried playing games like GTA: SA on the iPhone 4 vs the Y550. Are you sure they run smoother on the iPhone 4? This video shows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEpC4-ppekM

It takes over 1 and a half mins to load on the iPhone 4 and is unplayable when it loads. On the other hand is playable on high settings on the Y550 and loads up way faster. I've tested the same game on the Y550.

As for storage, I never realised the iPhone 4 had an sd card slot?

So to claim this deal is good you are comparing it against a phone that was < 1/4th the price new vs refurbished, doesn't say much for this deal?

It would probably be better comparing it to something like the Lumia 735 deal, since they are around the same price. But even then the Lumia 735 is new vs used.

        • @dtnvong:

Wow… I was sure I read that it was more than 2 point touch… but you are correct, I just tested mine.

One thing to note though is that some units do not have the same touchscreen, mine for instance is an M-Star_Msg2142_Ofilm_V1.22 but some other people seem to have a Focaltech_Ft6x36_Junda.21 … I wonder if the Focaltech is also 2 point only. Will find out.

        • who plays GTA4 on a phone?

when people talk about a phone being faster, they are often talking 1/2 second or even less difference between an app opening. Even if its 2 seconds, whoop.

        • @dtc: who plays GTA4 on a phone? Well no one, as it's not available on any phone :)

        • @Ronnnie:
I did say comparisons for similar hardware. You should be comparing it to an Samsung Galaxy s.

iPhones don't have SD card slots. You have been mistaken if you think you can simply expand an android phones app storage by just sticking in an SD card. There will be instances where you have 30gb free and not be able to install a 200mb app. It's the way storage is implemented in android that is confusing to a general user.

Lastly, an iPhone is an iPhone. It holds value better and hence I think this post is a bargain. There are cheaper alternatives, but this allows you into the iOS App Store.

        • @dtnvong:

Comparisons on ozbargain will come down to whatever similar product you can find for less dollars or similar cost. If I can get a smartphone that performs better for 1/4 of the price, then I can't see how people can say the product costing over 4 times more as being a deal. This is ozbargain at the end of the day, people are looking for a bargain. An old iPhone is an old phone that most people don't want, in 12 months time you won't be getting good resale value for this phone, you'll be lucky to find someone willing to buy it and you would certainly have lost more in terms of dollars than you would have with the better performing Y550.

        • @Ronnnie:

you really still don't get it. An iphone is an iphone. That is what the post was about. If people are looking for an iphone they may not be interested in a substitute.

Your comparison is similar to if someone wants a 2010 model Mercedes C class and you trying to convince them they should get a 2014 model Hyundai sonata. They both drive but there are differences.

    • The screen is in noway comparible.

  • +1

Just out of curiousity, if you want to get this phone for iOS app ecosystem, wouldn't you want something that'd be more recent to make sure that it can run the apps that you want to run fluently?

This phone is refurbished (I am not sure whether the refurbishing is done by the seller or Apple) one anyways, so wouldn't you be better off getting a refurbished iPhone 5c, 5 or 4s, or even 2nd hand iPhones which would probably be better in the long run?

    • +4

This phone is refurbished (I am not sure whether the refurbishing is done by the seller or Apple) one anyways

Yep, almost certainly have the Home button fixed, as that is the main failure in the iPhone4.

so wouldn't you be better off getting a refurbished iPhone 5c, 5 or 4s, or even 2nd hand iPhones which would probably be better in the long run?

Of course. But that will cost HEAPS more.

      • +3

The problem that I see with getting this is, how can you be certain that the refurbishing is up to the standard that Apple gets it done to. I know that this is pretty bad example, but my mother's iPhone 4 was not functioning properly. Lagging, randomly freezing and dying. If they refurbish that unit, I'd assume that they can sell it as a refurbished unit. My concern is, how can you be certain about the quality of these units, the parts inside them, when these phones have been out for 5 years?

Also, I see, 2nd hand iPhones 5c 16GB near Canberra region starting at $300 on Gumtree. Obviously, it doesn't show what price you can get these phones at from everywhere else, but I think it sort of sets some kind of reasonable boundaries on what the prices are going to be for getting these. Obviously it's up to the person to decide whether they'd want to invest $130 or not, but I wouldn't consider it as a massive investment since iPhone 5c probably would last longer than 4. It's just my opinion though.

  • Aren't there Windows phones (Nokia Lumia 530's) with better specs than this going for roughly $34.50 from Woolies??

    • Slightly hard to compare since Windows Phone have really limited selection of apps (i.e. no snapchat, no bank apps, etc). I had no problems with them, to be honest, since I just can use the IE on it for banking etc etc, but I think there are groups of people who'd definitely need apps.

    • I also have the 530, would not recommend it over iPhone 4 at all for a bunch of reasons. Huawei Y550 is a better match.

      • Though, I think you can get something like 730s, within that budget, or you can get something like Lumia 925 around that price (at least my search on eBay comes up with 925 for $170 delivered)

I've been using my gf's iPhone 4s while my Lumia 925 was getting repaired last year. I personally thought even though app selections are better on iOS, I prefer Lumia 925 since the phone itself functions better (larger screen, camera I think is better on Lumia 925, iPhone 4s felt really heavy (it might be because iPhone is smaller than Lumia) compared to Lumia 925 as well, so in short, better user experience overall from Lumia 925). I think as long as you don't have a specific app that you absolutely need for your usage, Windows Phone is an alright choice compared to older gen iPhones that costs around the same (not to mention, MS is trying to allow easier porting of Android and iOS apps onto WP ecosystem with the new W10, so app selection might get better).

Though this is comparing a phone that has been in use for at least 1 year, a model that is released few years ago back then, to a last gen flagship of Windows Phone, in other words, an unfair comparison. Though, in terms of how much it costs to get these phones, I think it is actually fairer than it looks, I've seen Lumia 925 going at $170 delievered on eBay.

        • It is an unfair comparison, however this is ozbargain and you compare products on the basis of what you can get for your dollar. This is why I would never buy an older Apple product. :)

        • +1

@Ronnnie: That's why I've added, it's fairer than it looks if you look at the price you can get them at.

Not to mention, this probably is seller refurbished, there is high change that they've used 3rd party components and the quality of refurbish probably isn't up to Apple's standard.

  • -1

I just inherited an iPhone 5. Not complaining. If it wasn't for that I would have never considered owning an iPhone. Although the iPhone 4 does seem outdated in comparison to what you can get these days from other brands.

  • Don't bother. Trying to run iOS7+ on this is one of the most frustrating experiences you can ever have
