    • Can confirm that it's 1 x $1 sim per EDR card.

      • how did you confirm it? I know some people said it can't but would love to see it in practise… I don't have the balls yet :(

        • As per my other comment below. I simply asked the lady at the service desk to put through another on the same card. The discount didn't come off so I used another card.

        • @tatnal: Thanks. I wonder if she pushed "pay". I noticed the discount only comes off after you commit to the sale. Then it will strike off $29. I don't have the balls yet to try myself as i'm also building accounts. lol

        • @Son ofa Zombie: Won't matter. They can cancel the transaction if required. In my case she simply remove the first EDR card then scanned the second then the discount came off. Nothing to worry about. Only a few days left.

  • If people would like to know, you can buy a telstra recharge ($30 or above) and still get a $30 starter pack for $1 BUT only 1 per EDR card. The lady was quite happy for me to put through another but didn't discount the starter kit. So as mentioned previously, I had registered another card last night and got the lady to scan that card instead and bingo $1 starter kit. Hope that helps.

    • this is on the same 30$ transaction or separate?!

      • Separate transaction of $30 or more and separate EDR card (just register a new one and print the temporary card). Going to end up with a lot of cards in the mail.

  • No luck using any of the credit on the app store. It comes up saying "youve reached the spending limit on this account, to buy this item change your payment method." Ive not used any credit at all and have done no downloads either so very unsure whats wrong

  • Tried $30 Opal top-up, no $30 starter kit offer activated on EDR card (yes the card scanned, I got the fuel voucher) :/

Got Amex cashback at least though…

    • You may need a $40 top up. Not sure if it was here or Whirlpool where someone successfully did an Opal top up.

    • How did you do a $30 topup? I thought the closest choices were $20 or $40.

      • They just put through $20 + $10.

        • That's good. The staff served me didn't allow that. She said that needs to be in separate transactions. So had to do the $40 top up.

    • Uh oh! I was just planning to top up my opal for $40 to get the sim for a dollar.

      • Well you don't lose much money, just some interest from your $40 sitting in Opal. If that is really the case, you can try again buying something else.

    • No problem getting the entitlement on the docket today and subsequently bought the starter kit. My purchase was $20 Opal topup plus $12 groceries through, don't know if that has anything to do with it. Maybe your $20 and $10 topups were separable transactions?

  • Has anyone tried buying giftcards?

    • Doesn't work on GC.

  • Got my 2nd $30 Sim Pack Today and It worked on a Gift card Purchase. Will explain Below. Also, I didn't Use the same EDR card as Before.

Todays Purchase was Part Groceries and Part Gift card and I paid it all in One transaction. The groceries was $10 and the Giftcard was $20. Bringing the total to Exactly $30. I scanned my New 2nd EDR card. Then I went to the Service counter and the Simpack went to $1. :)

I don't know if Just buying a gift card without groceries would work which is why i thought maybe If i added groceries in the same transaction than it should work. I only wanted a $20 gift card anyway so it worked out great.

    • Do you think buying a Woolworths gift card would work?

      • i don't know because i didn't buy the gift cards that you have to add balance to them. i just bought one of the gift cards that already has $20 loaded in to them and just scanned it at self-checkout with my groceries. The ones like woolworths gift card where you have to add balance at service desk. I did not try.

    • Is it possible to register a new card to an existing account? That is, is it possible to have more than one EDR cards linked to same email account? Or does it require a new email every time?

  • Anyone tried buying Woolworths gifts card, did you still managed to get the telstra sim for $1?

  • -5

You can buy $30, get the SIM for $1, then return the $30 worth of goods (could just be one item) = $1 SIM card.

Try not to do them too close together though. You may have to go to a different store.

    • -1

Just do it with the Nescafe machine that is on special at the moment. Just take it back before you open it and say you were confused about what pods it uses (ie. you are an ozbargainer and only use expired Aldi Pods ;) ).

      • +6

That isn't bargain hunting, IMHO that is low-level scamming.

        • -6

Why is this scamming? It's within their policy of returns (change of mind). A side benefit is that you got something super cheap.

    • If i was the service desk operator i won't be a happychappy serving you when you ask for such refund

    • +4

Sorry that isn't a bargain but rather ripping off retailer. Woolies will no longer have these promotions if people are doing this. Unethical and dodgy practice

      • -5

I think it's Telstra that is having this promotion, and not specifically initiated by Woolworths, as Coles had the exact promotion not too long ago. They probably get a very good price for the SIM card and/or subsidise it.

This isn't really too different from unlocking a cheap prepaid phone then using it with another carrier or signing up for discounts with multiple emails/details when they only intend for you to get one. They do it knowing full well that you can return items after obtaining the discount (after all, you did pay for the SIM - it wasn't free), however, not everyone would be bothered doing it.

  • I just went to my local and they only had the $30 starter kit for tablets. Can this credit be used with a phone plan that I create from using one of the other starter kits that are actually for phones?

    Thanks!

    • +1

Not too sure of your convoluted question, but i just have a stab here, all new gen Sim cards (3 in 1) are interchangeable, just the packaging look different, even if you have the older type you can still ask Telstra to switch on activation

      • Like bonz says. Same service, different packet.

        • Thanks guys

Yeah what I meant was that can I just add the $30 credit from the Tablet starter kit onto an existing prepaid phone plan with Telstra

        • @dumdidum:
Not as a recharge you can't.

You have to activate the SIM to have any credit on the activated SIM.

But you can top up your credit by activating the SIM (Freedom Plan is best for a month of calls & data) & then transfer credit as $10+$10+$9 to your SIM with CreditMe2u.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

I'm guessing CreditMe2u is the only method I can use to transfer the credit from all the sim packs I've been buying to the one Telstra service number?

        • @dumdidum:

Why would there be two ways?

        • @dumdidum:
          Yes, have fun :-)

$10/day max from each SIM with 25c fee for ($1-10 whole dollar) transfer.
That's why the maximum transfer is $29 per $30 SIM.

See the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki for tips. The elves (iratepirate & alvian, etc) have been doing a bit of sprucing & editing which is great ;-)

        • @brucefromaustralia:

I will! Thanks, will refer to your wiki when the time comes to activate :)

  • Any woolworth in sydney cbd still has stock of the sim?

  • I bought things for 30$ but didn't scan my EDR…if I shoe them the receipt and give them my edr would it scan for $1?

That worked last time for me

    • nah i think you need to scan, in the receipt then it will show "you now can buy xxx for just $1, until 19/6/15"
i just shopped and get that wording printed on my docket receipt but the store run out of sim. now the problem is finding store that has sim card in stock.

FYI wish gift cards won't work, but non woolworths group giftcards will (myer, DJ etc).

I bought the myer gift cards and went to myer and buy myself coles group gift cards :)

    • SO I just need to buy Myer Gift Cards at Woolworths then go to Myer and usese Myer Gift Cards to buy Coles Group Gift Cards? Might be a good idea as we dont really do grocery shopping at Woolies as they are too expensive compared to Coles.

      • use Myer Gift Cards to buy Coles Group Gift Cards

Asked Myers staff about that last week - said no.

        • Yes it seemed a bit strange that it could be done. I mean otherwise you could pass a lot of $$$ through Woolies to buy the Gift Cards and then take the actual grocery purchases out of a Coles (via Myer) .

        • @benbegg:
Their response was anything but Myer cards could be purchased with Myer cards. So I said Coles cards. They weren't amused.

And I think Woolies would be less impressed giving out $1 SIMs based effectively on $30 of Coles shopping ;-)

        • You can definitely buy coles group gift card with Myers gift card - I went to one terminal which said she won't do it, I simply went upstair look for another terminal and tried again - the lady was nice "$200 Coles Gift card? sure how are you paying? by gift card? sure I will help you with that!"

        • @holyplai:
I'll try again. I bought an about to expire Myer gift card from a friend at half price, but couldn't find anything I wanted to buy. So staff suggested gift cards, from a display rack

I'd say the difference in approach is to ask to buy the Coles card, they start the transaction, then hand over the Myers card after they have committed to the transaction. Be prepared to walk away & try again elsewhere.

  • Only 1 per EDR… I didn't know so I've spent another batch of $30 only to find out this was the case …. :(

  • +2

I personally thought the Coles promo was much easier to buy the SIM packs. Less hassle and ability to buy more every time I spend $30, than having to scan an EDR card and be tied to just one per purchase. Isn't the whole point of the promo to generate more sales?

    • +1

      I agree.

From me that week Coles managed to pull 100% of 3 times our weekly shopping instead of maybe 30% of 1 times our weekly shopping. In return, apart from an abundance of "deliciously fruity Nannas pies" and all the other half decent deals I could find, we got a lot of discounted Telstra SIMs. The real cost of those prepaid plans to Coles and/or Telstra will be negligible.

      • Looking back on it, I concur. I shopped 2 times at Woolies for this promo, versus 7 times at Coles during their $1 Telstra promo. I would have done more Woolies shops, but the hassle of registering for a new EDR card each time plus the extra travel time versus Coles put me off using this as much. Probably would have done an extra 2 shops at Woolies if it was just the travel time. So they've missed out on >= $60 worth of extra sales that I would have bought from them if it's wasn't for the 1 SIM pack per EDR limitation.

        • I only picked up 2 SIMs.
My cupboards & freezer couldn't take any more after Coles deal.

Can't see the big restriction on purchases…

With multiple registered EDR cards I recommended at start of deal, you could have picked up multiple SIM deals per shopping trip. When redeeming, if staff weren't happy, or store ran out, you took your cards to another store to redeem $1 deals. Could have got so many SIMs that way in just 1 shop. Much easier than Coles restrictions.

Coles had a more onerous 1 per customer rule, which may not have been enforced & SIM had to be purchased with shopping. Some stores ran out of 'limited stock', and people bought groceries before realising that.

Suggested days before deal started to register new cards then because of likely restriction in Telstra's promotion at Woolies.

I also recommended that to you on the first day of the deal, when you questioned the restriction. Should have brought up these issues during deal.

Same as previous Woolies deal (previous deal link with with details provided at start of this deal), it was possible to get more than 1 SIM at a time, with purchases of $30+ on separate EDR cards. I did.

        • @brucefromaustralia: Your advice Bruce was great and is thoroughly appreciated :-) I did register one extra card as per your recommendation, print out the temporary card and cut it down to size and remember to put it in my wallet and used it for buying the second SIM, but it was a bit of a faff about, which made me wonder whether Woolies would have been better off without this limitation - that was all.

        • @nickj:
Limitation is likely to have been from Telstra, it was their promo.

My own business handled corporate clients who taught me a lot. Supermarket promos are paid for by the brand, not the supermarket.

I have been told Telstra likes to limit 1 starter pack per person in promos, to attract new customers. They make money from recharges that way.

  • +1

Merrylands ran out of $30 SIM :-(

  • Oh and one thing I did want to ask about: On the OzB wiki page for the Telstra starter kits, could a section please be added about how to do the Data pass SIM plus $1 CreditMe2U for extra data and expiry, and what you get (e.g. I think I read somewhere an extra 0.5 GB and 3 days extra) ? That seems like it could be a good use for these SIM cards, together with maybe the freedom plan? E.g. some approach like this, but it's only a draft, and I may have misunderstood something:

    1. Buy a bunch of $30 SIM Starter packs for cheap.
    2. Activate one SIM as a Data pass SIM and one on the Freedom plan. Put Data Pass into a 4G modem (e.g. for home network, or for use in the car).
    3. Make calls, SMS, browse Internet with this FREEDOM SIM. FREEDOM credit only lasts for 28 days.
    4. Over 3 days, use Telstra CreditMe2U to transfer $10 in $1 increments from the FREEDOM SIM to Data SIM ( 10 x $1 on day 1, 10 x $1 on day 2, and 4 x $1 on day 3). Does not add up to $30 due to 25 cent fee per transfer.
    5. Data pass SIM starts with 3 GB of data on 30 days expiry, and $30 credit with 30 days expiry, and data accumulates at rate of 0.49 GB per $1 transfer, and extends credit expiry by 3 days, but data expiry does not extend on creditme2u (unless within 3 days of expiry). So after 3 days, will have 3 + (10 + 10 + 4) * 0.49 = 14.76 GB of data.
    6. If data Pass SIM is due for expiry in next 30 days, recharge the Data Pass SIM with a real money $50 recharge to extend in data expiry by 1 year, and add 5 GB of extra data.
    7. Credit on the data SIM cannot be transferred out, so spend the credit (30 + 10 + 10 + 4 = $54), e.g. in the Google play store (e.g. to buy movies or TV shows) before it expires.
    8. When freedom SIM has been used up, throw away and activate a new one, and repeat from step 3.

    Have I understood correctly?

    • It hasn't been added to the Wiki as it has changed & may change again in a very short time.

I provided a link to the Whirlpool site there for latest info. When the details stabilise, the Wiki should be updated.

I suggested in the Coles $1 Telsta deal that the Data Pass is more suited to a forum discussion. Wikis arent the place for discussion on rapidly changing matters.

I will let others advise on actual use - I haven't tried it as have so much non-Telstra free data this month.

Steps 1-4 are confirmed as I recommended that approach.
I hate spending real money to recharge - never have done in years of using Telstra SIMs.

    • If you transfer $1 to datapass, you will get 0.5GB in your data pass SIM plus 3 days expiry.
