      Please outline the process, thanks.

        1. Ask for Telstra PrePaid SIM Starter Kit $30 (to make sure they have stock) at the service desk, ask them to put it aside.
        2. Shop for $30 worth of items
        3. Check out at counter near service desk, usually this is the "12 items or less"
        4. Scan the $30 worth of items, then the EDR card
        5. Ask for the Telstra PrePaid SIM Starter Kit, scan it.
        6. Go to payment.
        7. Discount of $29 is shown on receipt.

        This was at Merrylands NSW.
The expiry date on the SIM is March 2017.

        • So buying starter kit together with grocery in the same transaction works as well, can anyone confirm successfully buying the kit after? ie. getting the kit by itself like last time.

        • +1

@bonz: This would depend on the person at the Service desk.
Easier to just get it in the same transaction.

        • @congngo:
Last year i tried to buy in the same transaction but did not reduce, dropped the sim card, then tried to buy separately still no go, went to another store the next day got it for $1 no problem

        • @bonz:
Confirmed as above what @congngo said..got my $30 worth of groceries when to the service desk ,asked for the starter pack , handed it over no probs, went through the self serve ,scanned everything , scanned EDR card.all done.staff were aware of the deal and even reminded me to scan my EDR card.

        • @bonz: yes i can, and with opal card and with three floors inbetween registers!

        • +1

          @bonz:

Mine didn't work in the same transaction. Had to do a separate transaction to get it for $1.

Also, works with a temporary EDR card that was given over the counter just before purchase.

  • Looks like the starter kit is one per edr card. I did two transactions but only one reduced to $1.

I got a unique spend $100 get $10 off voucher on each receipt so not all is lost.

    • The fine print doesn't mention a limit, try presenting your erd tomorrow as sometimes it could take a few hours to register the offer on your card like it happened to me last time

      • +1

I'm pretty sure its one per EDR card. The self checkout lady bought the 2 cards up to the checkout, the first went through fine with $30 worth of stuff. The 2nd (with another lot of $30 stuff) didn't.

        • We just need someone to confirm that we can use the EDR application brochure on most service desks.

        • +1

          @nocure:
T&C: offer only for Registered EDR cards. That's how they impose a limit. So register first. As I posted near start of deal, that has failed for me with counter EDR card before.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
And it worked for me before.

        • @roughana:
Today? Different deals have different t&c.
Just discussed with staff the 1 per EDR - they confirmed it.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
And then there is the contrary evidence

        • @roughana:
Read that & already asked for lucky method we can copy.

        • @roughana: has to be registered, just tried it.

        • @astrodude:
Ok, thanks for the confirmation for this deal.

But then… What about this contrary evidence

        • @roughana:
Also 2 other people on whirlpool confirmed that unregistered cards work

    • No such limit here. In two transactions of $30 worth of groceries, I got a $30 Telstra starter kit for $1 and had scanned the same everyday rewards card. Expiry date in both packs was Oct 2016. OK, but not mid-late 2017 like my previous ones from Coles. Expiry date would depend on what the store gets.

      • Lucky EDR card ;-)
        What approach did you take?
Did you purchase pack with $30 spend - at self check out.

        Ask for best expiry date.
They often have old ones to get rid of. Major supermarkets generally turn them over more frequently.

        • +1

Sorry, I didn't see your question originally, maybe I read an earlier edit.

Thanks for your point about the expiry dates. When I went back later, I exchanged the packs for ones expiring in 2017.

It was a lucky EDR card. Alas not permanently lucky. I have since (a few days ago) tried again with the same EDR card, but no go that time.

The fact that the EDR card worked twice originally is a mystery. Both transactions were through a store operated checkout. At the time the service counter staff were still trying to figure out how to do this. They were relieved to see that my $29 discounts worked automatically. (When I first came in and asked the service counter if they had the SIM packs, they were trying to fix a problem where this wasn't working for a customer. They later told me that they ended up ringing support.) Could IT support have botched something? Could my card have shown up as unredeemed for both transactions due to a slow/delayed network data update? No way of knowing.

Both receipts show the same EDR card number in the earned QANTAS points section. The timestamp on the two receipts was one minute apart, but the second EDR scan was at the beginning of the checkout, so there was much less than a minute separating the two separate scans of the same EDR card. The spends were each just over $31, including the $1=$30-$29 SIM pack in each.

  • Has anyone got the starter kit with a phone recharge?

  • +9

At Woolies Leichhardt NSW, I checked with the service desk before shopping this morning, and their process is:
    * Check they have Telstra Starter Kits in stock.
    * Buy >= $30 of groceries. Must scan EDR card before paying (the service desk emphasized this), and pay and complete shopping normally without buying the Starter Kit.
    * On the docket, it included a section at the bottom, just underneath the bit about earning a fuel voucher, that said "You are now eligible to purchase the Telstra $30 starter kit for $1. You must redeem by the 19/06/2015."
    * Then take your docket to the service desk, ask for the Starter Kit, show the grocery docket, show your EDR card again (which they scan), and pay $1.
    * The service desk then crossed out the "You are now eligible to purchase the Telstra $30 starter kit for $1" section on the grocery receipt with pen.
    * Get the SIM and a new receipt for $1, and all done.

The process was much easier than the Coles offer, because their was no suspending transactions, or trying to get the checkout and the service desk to cooperate.

The downside is that I really have to wonder: Is there a limit of one $1 starter kit per EDR for the duration of this offer? Or is it a limit of one per day? Because the instance on scanning the EDR card at every point means they can impose a limit, if they chose to do so.

Oh, and Starter Kit expiry date was March 2017.

    • T&C: offer only for Registered EDR cards. That's how they impose a limit.

Suggested to register new EDR cards when deal posted. And that a limit of 1 per card was likely.

Then with new registered EDR cards, the only restriction is how many $30 purchases you can make in a week ;-)

      • So it's a limit of 1 per registered card ,what about tomorrow?

        • +1

That was it last time - 1 for promo.

You just register a new card. The discounts they offer to use it are worth it. Just rest your card for a while & wait for the emails :-)

        • Just discussed with staff the 1 per EDR - they confirmed it.
But report above that 2 went through for 2 $1 packs on same EDR card .

    • Probably one pack per EDR card as the ad says. Same last time for the VF $5 starter pack deal.

    • I just used this method, unfortunately they had no stock of the starter packs so the lady gave me a raincheck and I will grab it on my next visit!

  • Is it possible to get the starter kit by topping up $30 on Opal card ? Anyone tried ?

    • Yes, just worked for me at Eastwood NSW. ($40 opal top up, as they don't have $30 option. Didn't bothered to try 10 and 20)

    • depends on the operator. visited Bruwood woolies the Aussie lady told me to shop $30 on groceries :-(

      • Generally best to get in quick for different purchases like that, before staff & management wise up ;-)

      • @leehungfei - Tell her to let the computer decide!

      • Go to a different store, buy a $30 Telstra sim card and scan your EER card. It will give you a $29 discount as the offer is stored in your card. If you don't get the discount (which should not happen), just cancel the order as you would not have paid yet. Say you forgot to bring your credit card. Do not mention the offer to the staff as it confuses them. The system automatically does the deduction for you. You have up to 19th June to redeem the offer.

    • yes, town hall

      • Town hall sold out today

    • +1

I got it last time for the VF starter kit. The computer will decide, your entitlement will be printed on your docket. So if it works at Town Hall, it should work elsewhere.

  • Anyone tried to buy one without buying groceries/spending $30 first (just scan edr card)?
interested to see if that works.

    • +1

Bought groceries and the receipt says I am eligible for $1 Telstra sim until 19th June. So it works.

      • -1

what about without spending $30 first ;)

  • +1

Lumia 532 and $30 Telstra sim works together. Bought both and the total came up $39+$1=$40.

    • Can confirm this I did it a few times with different paper EDR cards that I registered as BrucefromAussie advised. Tried with one edr card for 2x sims - no go - even when the manager tried to overide it…

What a deal $40 for a Lumia 532, 13Gb of data, $24 of google play credit and $220 of funny money phone calls for the wife to call home.

I'm now over 300Gb of data credit and an expiry of 6 months.

      • how?

        • +3

Collecting telstra $30 starter packs for $1 each and transfering the credits using creditme2u. BrucefromAussie explains the method in his wiki post. For awhile it was 1Gb for every $1 you transfered to a data sim now its 500Mb.

One thing I'm really happy about is that google play apps payed for with a telstra credit has increased from $19.90 max to $99.90 so i can buy some more expensive apps like Navicom for the boat.

        • @iratepirate:

          cool.
why $24 of google play credit? when did they change the maximum limit?

        • +1

@PissLUR: Each creditme2u transfer "costs" $0.25 so you can move $24 over to the other sim out of $30 and they charge yo $6 to do it.

They changed the google play payment limit a couple of days ago.

        • @iratepirate:
Can you please provide a link to Google play limit increase?
          Thanks

        • @1stOzBarginer: I noticed a change in the T&C from telstra tried out a purchase over $20 and it worked.

          https://www.telstra.com.au/customer-terms/google-play-terms

        • @iratepirate:
          Thanks

      • hey there. Question on recharge and how it extends the expiry dates. I've read the wiki pages but just need confirmation. So I've been doing the $1 transfer thing and currently have about $180 in credit expiring Feb17 and about 93GB data expiring 24Jun2015. I'm planning on doing a $50 recharge to extend a year. Will that recharge extend both expiry dates to Feb18 (assuming I don't do anymore CreditMe2U)?

        • i still dont get how you end up having call credit as well as huge data pass on single sim, are you transfering to a freedom plan? and doing the $1 transfer which adds data to that? but you have extended expiry on the 180$(call) as well?! which i assume you combined longlife with.

        • +1

@Balls: just activate new starter kit on freedom plan (anytime or night bonus doesn't matter) and transfer $10 in total in $1 increments from the newly activated sim to your data sim. $1 credit extends expiry by 3 days and adds 0.5GB to the data.

        • @tatnal:

got it, i thought you were doing the reverse, i.e putting the data sim back onto the freedom plan

so in essence the freedom plan still has normal expiry of 28 days or? i assume you switched few times with longlife to extend it?

        • $50 recharge adds 6 months to expiry date plus 5Gb

        • @iratepirate:

yes that's data pass sim only

at no time we can extend the freedom expiry AND add additional data to it, correct me if i'm wrong.

        • +1

@iratepirate: I thought $50 recharge on a data pass extends a year plus 5gb (https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/prepai…). Just need to confirm whether both credit and data expiry dates will be the same as the longest date. Might have a chat to Telstra tomorrow.

        • @tatnal:
A $50 recharge sets a 365 day expiry from the day you recharge, it does not extend your existing expiry date.

        • +1

@bonz: This is correct, my bad, the $50 gives 365 days + 5Gb and $140 gives 730 days + 16Gb - from the day you recharge.

        • @iratepirate: Thanks all. So make sure I recharge the day before.

        • @tatnal: what's the go with transfering 10x $1, rather than a single $10 transfer? Is the 0.5GB something you get for each transfer? Rather than a direct $:GB ratio?

        • @altonius: Lots has been written already about this. In summary, transferring $1 CreditMe2U from a phone sim to a datapass sim will earn you $1 credit with an extra 3 days expiry and 0.5GB extra data at a cost of $0.25.

        • @tatnal: Thanks, from my reading it looks like the $1=0.5GB is a glitch.

        • @altonius: It was $1=1GB but that that changed soon after. It's been $1=0.5GB for sometime now.

      • You can also use Telstra credit on windows phone store.

        • Really, need to give that a try

  • So I guess it won't work if I am to buy $30 gift card using the Amex deal

  • ok one nice staff offered to sell me more sims for only single $30 spend if i gave her more registered EDR cards to scan in same transaction, yeh i know sounds crazy, but would this work? would you need to spend another $30 on other EDR to achieve this?

  • +4

The last time they had this deal in woolworths, I ran around like a mad man, I went to 3 different woolworths, went through buying $30 of groceries to only find out that they had no more simpacks.

Then they told me they would raincheck for me but when i came back they told me the transaction had to be on the same receipt and refused the raincheck so i ran around and went through all the effort for nothing.

What made things worse was reading on how everyone on Ozbargain managed to get so many of these and i couldn't even get 1! I only wanted 1!

So this time I am extremely Happy. I got my $1 starter pack today without any trouble. The staff knew what they where doing this time. Last time, the staff all acted clueless.

This time, I asked if they had stock. they said yes. I went and got my groceries. I was $2 Short from $30. The calculator in my Head must be abit rusty. so the first thing that came to mind was I need to add Crumpets or Raisin toast. Then A minute later i thought to myself. I must be reading Ozbargain too much if i knew that crumpets and raisin toast is on sale every week. lol. Anyway i added in a raisin toast. Hit $30 spending and the sim pack went to $1 straight away. Quick and easy

  • Thanks very much TA for this post, esp for the Nokia Lumina offer. Would someone mind sparing a few mins and PMing me with any tips on how to get the back cover of the phone off to access the simCard slot? Everyone in the family's tried with no success even after following the instruction booklet.

    • +1

Put your thumb in the middle of the back of the phone pull on a top corner with the other hand until it pops. Move your thumb to the camera lens and pull the other top corner off pull on the back down the sides and then the bottom…you won't brake it it's thick plastic.

      • Hallelujah! You and a YouTube video(Gadget Diary) helped. Thanks iratepirate

    • +1

push back on the top corners one at a time from the screen side till it pushes back slightly, after that follow the instructions

  • Can some1 reak down what the deal is with the sin starter pack. Why is every1 transfering it over to another plan… do u get additional credit data by doing so. If i were to just use it as is without transfering it how much data do i get on it?

Also whats the deal with the playstore credit… hiw does that work. Sorry for noob questions

  • Tjx fir that. just from looking at that can anyone confirm if i understand this correct.

If i just put it in a phone and use it for data i will get 3gb data as well as $30 credit which can be used on the google playstore?

I hope im reading it right cos thats ridiculous for only $1!

    • That's one of the possibilities - yes!

Was discussed a fair bit in Coles $1 Telstra deal, as Data Pass was introduced at that time.

Transferring credit from another $1 SIM on a phone plan like Freedom to the $1 Data Pass SIM (use CreditMe2u) is even a better deal for high data users ;-)

I am a low volume phone user, so use 2 $1 packs per year for incoming calls to my number I've had for years & use the credit for 400 minutes of calls, or transfer credit to another SIM, or spend at Play. I use data for calls & messages with $1 packs. Otherwise packs are activated on Freedom for 4 weeks of calls, 1.3GB data & that $30 credit. All described in the Wiki.

That's why people get excited over these $1 deals - where else do you get a deal like that?

There are useful forums here discussing how to use credit with Google Play. Just do a search for Google Play above.

A summary of those discussions will be incorporated into the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki over time. That Wiki is a how to archive of what has been confirmed in deal, forum & other discussions. But always check latest rates, inclusions, etc first.

I updated the Data Pass section 1 day after it was introduced, and it has changed a lot since a few weeks ago - Whirlpool forum discussions has most up to date info (link in Wiki).

Of course people are free to add to the Wiki with relevant factual information.

      • Yes im not too savy when it comes to these things but that does sound amazing. 1 last noob question which is probabky if the wiki but if i want to use the $30 credit on the playstore will it automatically be used if i pay via the telstra payment option or do i need to do something in order to actually use it that way

        • +2

A usual question, which I do not have current knowledge of. I haven't paid for anything on Play for quite a while.

See the recent forum on the subject as many report problems when SIM is not in their phone, the Wiki on Credit use with Play, and was discussed in the Coles $1 deal - but it's lost in there somewhere.

I wrote / compiled (most of) the Wiki just to understand the subject myself - as a noob. Most was simply cut from deal discussions & summarised. It became a Wiki when I was asked to do the job, as the same questions were being asked deal after deal. It's been added to by others more knowledgeable in different aspects. It's complex & ever changing. Most of us know mainly about what we currently use.

So I'm always suggesting others add to or update the Wiki. I recently updated some areas, but others need work. My head hurts trying to understand the changing options ;-)

        • You can select different payment methods. If you have an existing google play balance, it may default to that, so always check before pulling the trigger.

  • Does the Lumia 532 support 4G ?

  • Thanks so much man. Appreciate thee help. So the lunia 532 from woolies came with a telstra sim starter pack included. Is that the same $30 credit dealy or just a sim which needs to be topped uo with credit?

    • +1

Included SIM contains $10 starter credit which cannot be used for Google Play.

  • After activating it i only got 1.3gb of data not 3gb? Still amazing value for $1 but not as good as i thought

    • You've activated a different plan by the sound of it. Check your plan. I think it will say Freedom with calls cap, free calls, & 1.3GB of data - rather then data only Data Pass with 3GB with no calls. Posted about these options just above.

  • Unfortunately i had to call to activate it because for some reason it couldnt confirm my address. The lady who i got was adamant that the 3gb was a broidband plan and not a mobile plan. Oh well at least ive still git $30 credit for the playstore

    • Chat online or call again - may be able to change you to data only Data Pass if that's what you wanted. Sounds like their error :-(

      Good luck.
I've got a serious tax fraud case in front of me to deal with. Telstra is nothing compared to that. I might be busy for a while ;-)

  • That sounds serious. Ive actually got abither 1 of the starter kits maybe i wil keep this 1 for calls and texts and activate the new 1 just for data ill obviously end ul with having 2 differnet numbers and have to fiddle around with switch sims to change over but it might be worth it just for downloading files with that sim every niw and then

    • You can transfer credit to the Data SIM to get lots more data! You can still use that credit for Google Play - do that before your usage eats into your credit. Last time I checked, using CreditMe2u to transfer $1 at a time, will give you $24 credit on Data Pass SIM + 12GB ON top of the 3GB & $30 at activation! Check at the end of Coles $1 deal.

And you still have all the calls etc on the Freedom SIM. Pretty good for a total of $2. Use the credit within 30days.

Now back to the ATO, AFP, & MP…

      • In this case, when does the 3GB + 12GB data expire?

        • I'd suggest reading the discussion at end of Coles $1 Telstra deal, & Whirlpool discussion linked to in that deal. This is a rapidly changing topic.

  • Is expired Sim still good? Went to woolworth in Dockland Melbourne, they gave me a sim with expired date as May 2014. I found it 2 mins later and refunded.

    • I warned earlier that stores sometimes offload old stock in these deals.

Always ask for longest expiry date & check expiry. You should never be sold out of date stock of anything!

Expired SIM can't be activated. They owed you a new SIM, not a $1 refund. Best to keep a photo of SIM & receipt. Complain!

      • As an example, a chemist sold me a supplement on special. Later I discovered I had been charged full price. It was about 12km trip to recover the overcharge.

A few days later I found the use by date only had 6 months, but the large bottle would take me up to 12 months to consume, as I already had an open bottle. Other chemists sold stock with 1 year longer expiry.

I was not happy & emailed head office last week. They sent a staff member to my home, who apologised, refunded 150% of discount purchase price, left me with the purchase plus a fresh stock bottle.

Now that's much better, but it would have been easier if I had checked my purchase & receipt!

Talk to the customer service manager about the bad service & old stock. Point out (calmly but confidently) that is not good customer relations selling useless out of date stock. You had fulfilled your part of the contract, now they must live up to theirs.

Knowing Woolies ($100rrp free Tasmanian smoked salmon for me last month without even complaining - they know how to keep me happy, plus free stuff & $10+ Gift cards or cash most months), I'm sure they will make it up to you ;-)

        • Great idea. Thanks.

  • Like above comment, beware of expiry. I got one yesterday and asked the lady for the expiry. She said they had no expiry on them. But I had a quick look and saw that they had expired. A lot of the packs they had have expired up to a year ago.

Any luck with more than 1 sim per edr card?
Or just need to register another one?
