So not worth it. $200 will get you a dual sim potentially running 1920, if not 16GB/2GB from China with A53+ and a bigger battery. Sorry…

I was struggling to buy a Windows phone for $29 recently (it's wifi hub duties only)… I wouldn't use one if you paid me

      • +1

Android was only the stepping stone until windows.

    • +1

Lenovo k3 note obviously offers better bang for buck.

      • +1

Offers more malware per buck too going by the forums.

  • +4

    From that link:
    3G bands HSDPA 900 / 2100

If this is the case, it will be an "Epic Fail" on the Aldi network - this looks more suited to Optus 3G than Telstra (and ALdi)

    • +1

530 = $19 how much better is this phone compared

      • Smaller screen and sellout model.

      • From a value perspective I'd say the 530 walks all over it

        • 5" screen makes a bigger difference

        • +1

          Camera with flash, dual sim!

        • +2

And lastly 1gb ram which speeds ot up immensely from the 530's 512gb. Running windows phone is lightweight compared to the encumbered android os.

        • From a value pov the 532 is best windows phone.

Where can I get these 530 with 512gb? Lol

I have used the 532 and 530, they both perform identical. The thing is the 540 might be slower at certain tasks because it's using a higher resolution screen that requires more power to push those extra pixels, while it uses the same power soc as the 530.

          @Ronnnie:

But will the 530/532 get windows10 mobile? I doubt it. Short term pain for long term gain.

        • +2

@Damonator84: all wp 8 are getting windows 10. only carriers can be hurdle but I think Windows 10 is like ios updates and carries cant stop it.

        • +1

Yes the 530/532 are getting WP 10 and you can get wp10 preview for both. The 532 also has glance that the 540 doesn't get.

        • @Ronnnie:

          What's "glance"??

        • @Ronnnie:

That's because of the type of display. The 930 also doesn't have it… Yet. They are working on it but.

Why I still own a Nokia 1020… As my secondary handset

        • @Damonator84: currently running WP10 on my 530 right now.

        • @krouton24:

yeah I run the preview on my 532. It's too buggy to run on a main phone. I like the 532, it's a great phone. The only thing I wish was better is the screen. However the screen is reasonable enough indoors, just real crap in sunlight.

        • @Damonator84:

Thanks, have seen that but not sure what it's called.

        • @Ronnnie:

I tried but the fw wont get on the damn thing. Internal storage is an issue… Any ideas.. Has a 64gb card in it..

        • @Damonator84: is that on 530? I only done it on the 532 which has 8gb of storage. I don't have sd card in phone. I would just do a factory reset and just do a clean install of the preview. The latest one is still a bit laggy but its getting better. The project Sparta browser is way better than internet explorer. I can't wait for wp10.

      3G bands HSDPA 900 / 2100
If this is the case, it will be an "Epic Fail" on the Aldi network - this looks more suited to Optus 3G

It is the case unfortunately. I can't believe Aldi would sell something that wasn't optimised for their network.
Not only will there be a lot of returns but also a lot of people thinking their network is worse than what it is.

    • So the question is why do they a phone that does not support their 3G network?

      • +3

Optus people shop at Aldi too, you know :)

        • +1

          that's true. :)

        • +1

Optus people shop at Aldi too, you know :)

Yes, but they advertise their XXL plan as being "Perfect for the Microsoft Lumia 540"
Which it is far from perfect. In fact you won't get much if any data at all depending on where you are.

        • @Frig:
          2100 is Telstra 3G

        • @Damonator84:

Only in some places. I have used a Telstra sim on a 900/2100 phone and there were many places in Sydney's suburbs where I had either no signal or only 1 or 2 bars. Inside supermarkets etc I definitely had no signal while having full signal on an 850MHz phone. Venture out past the suburbs and there was definitely no 3G coverage.

Edit: I think the lower frequency the signal, the better the signal penetration. This is why 5GHz cordless phones or wifi don't work so good further away from the router or if there is interference compared to the 2.4GHz variety.

  • Quite a bit of jump up in price from the Lumia 530 single sim.

  • +1

Hmmm wonder what the reason is to chuck just a snapdragon 200 in with an hd screen.

    • +1

      India!

    • +1

Yeah I don't think a sd 200 is going to fair well pushing that many pixels. At this price you would be better looking at the 640 if you don't need dual sim.

  • +2

540 has HSPA+ but no 4G LTE, so faster than conventional 3G but not as fast as 4G LTE.

    • +1

      But 4G drains battery faster

      • the problem with 4g battery and temperature issue, because there are not enough 4g relays around, therefore the mobile keeps on scanning.

If your workplace has enough 4g coverage, your mobile wont drain so fast

  • +2

The 640 is 4G and cheaper if you get optus prepay 179 or Vodafone prepaid 199 minus 25% at Big W 25% off all Vodafone handset (may have expired)
The 640 and 540 are identical except
    640 4G 540 3.5G
    640 slightly larger battery
540 front camera 5 megapixel wide angle 640 only 0.9 megapixel crap piece of lens
Both are HD resolution clear black gorilla 5"
Both 1 gig ram that flies
    640 snapdragon 400 Quad
    540 snapdragon 200 Quad

    • +3

640 single sim 540 dual sim

      • There's a dual sim 640 version but imported.
Also I have heard that 640 have "glance" and 540 does not. Cannot confirm.

    • I dont think the 540 has the clearblack layer.

    • Great work paloverde88 :-)

  • +1

Aldi Ringwood (3134) has reduced the price of their Onix windows phone from $99 to $69. I think comparable to the Lumia 530 for those who can't get that. Just my 2c worth (windows phones aren't my thing).

    • Why would you pay $69 for that when you can currently go down to Dick Smith or Kmart and buy a Lumia 530 for $29. Better still come on Thursday the Lumia 530 is going to be $19 at Big W. Unlock codes can be bought off eBay AU for $20.

      • Why would you pay $69

        because

comparable to the Lumia 530 for those who can't get that

        • Fair enough.

Although there must be a Dick Smith or a Kmart store in Ringwood.

      • It is quite easy to dismiss the 540 as a mere one digit upgrade from 530 but that digit does not do it justice as the 540 is like 100 miles above the 530 both in quality and performance I reckon the 540 should have a 6XX series.

  • However I think $199 is not an aldi price point.
It should be $149 to continue in Aldi's reputation as a price leader.

    • No pricing competition in Australia when it comes to the Nokia Lumia 540 dual sim because it seems only Aldi has it which means there's no other retailers pricing to compete against.

      • +3

Correct - only Aldi sells this product in AU. However, I wouldn't say there isn't competition. Plenty of other phones out there at sub $200 price point.

  • Finally Microsoft/Nokia comes to Aldi, Can't find the market to sell their phone?. :)))

    • Most likely Aldi signed an exclusivity contract, meaning other retailers cannot stock the phone until much later.

Having certain brands in your store, and only in your store, can drive foot traffic and sales. So most likely people who are after this phone will all flock to Aldi to buy it, and pick up their groceries at the same time. Win-win.

  • Am I missing something here? This looks to be pretty bad value to me, especially considering the Lenovo K3 Note is about the same price (if not cheaper) with MUCH better specs.

    • The specs are indeed pretty low-end but the price difference comes from the Nokia / Microsoft branding. Plus,
its local stock and it has 2 year warranty. The device is also localised for Au, so the power adapter meets Australian regulations.

And yes, you are buying from a brick / mortar shop, can't really compare between buying a product from overseas between buying from a trusted Australian retailer with a multinational presence.

  • Are you sure that this phone is dual sim?

I have done a google search and the 540 does come with a dual sim version but there is nothing in aldi's advertising that suggests this phone is dual sim. I would've thought that a phone that's dual sim would be a pretty big selling point.

I'm not sure whether or not its dual sim but seeing dual sim phones in Australia is rare. It may be worth double checking this feature is included before purchasing.

    • Valid point but if you look at the photo closely, you will see Sim 1 and Sim 2

      • I see that now you have pointed it out. The picture of the screen wouldn't be somewhere I would look to determine a phone feature.

  • Dual Sim sure, yet neither of these giving LTE access > terrible oversight.

Price out at least $100 unfortunate given Y550 nearest competitor 90.00- and given Huawei do not need my purchases apps from store, tho you might.

  • I wanted to check this out so went to Aldi at Hurstville sydney, bad service, queued up the long line all she said after waiting in line was "finished" try other stores. Yourself mind you, no one at Aldi are trained to solve problems for customers.
I went to Miranda Sydney and the only one they had was crushed box. The box was so crushed, the phone was swimming inside and they wanted full price for that. Like I said they don't care about customer experience just grab your bargain and leave you're lucky you even got a crushed box version, many got nothing. Count your blessings and pay full price. I went to JB and got instant $30 unadvertised discount on the Zte blade S6 4g dual sim. And the box was not crushed sealed and brand new.
This is the difference, aldi gives virtually no service. They may as well have robots instead of humans. No big companies will charge a customer full price on a product in a crushed box. Especially not an item costing nearly $200.
I was prepared to pay more at jb for something else but service exceeded my expectations.
