1502

Once again, TPG's plans have been upgraded (has happened sooo many times in the past few months!). And some of their higher plans have 1 Mb/s shaping! :D

New ADSL2+ plans are as follows:

Super Fast Starter/12GB $29.99 12GB (4GB+8GB) 128K/128K
Super Fast Basic /40GB $39.99 40GB (20GB+20GB) 128K/128K
Super Fast Standard /120GB $49.99 120GB (60GB+60GB) 512K/512K

    • I'd try customer support, also, you seem to have kilobits per second and kilobytes per second confused - unless you're actually only getting 18 kilobytes a second download now, which is terrible….

      • ISP advetised their speed in bit. so you can said Mbps = mega bit per second.
        1 Byte = 8 bit
        1 Kbps = 1024 bps (2 power 10).

speed on tpg maps is the direct line if the cable from the phone exchange directly wiring in your home phone. which is impossible. you also need to add the distance cabling inside your house. i live in the unit, so the wiring will be longer. thats why i got less speed than the one show on the map

    • Most likely a modem/linefilter/phoneline problem.

    • don't believe what the map says too much either…theres too many factors and the distance on a map may not be the actual line distance you are dealing with.

    • I hope you're not mixing up bits with bytes.

    • Bits/bytes different aside, you should review what hardware you're using in comparison to others, including your modem and filters. Call your phone company and get them to do a check (just say you've got line noise), as it may be a bad phone line.

Check your line attenuation. For every KM between you and the exchange, your attenuation will be ~13.8db (i.e. divide your distance to exchange by 13.8) If it seems really off, then it's a line issue.

  • thanks daniel15

  • Hate this, as everyone will keep downloading even after shaped….

  • Yeah these plans are great if you can get them in your area. Pretty sure most WA exchanges don't have TPG ADSL2+ enabled.

  • Oakleigh VIC doesn't have anymore port for ADSL2+ :(

    • Had the same problem on the same exchange 2 years ago. I waited almost a year for ports to open. Hope the wait isn't as bad this time … I feel for you :(

  • I can't get ADSL2+ either, otherwise I'd be all over this! (Sydenham VIC exchange out of space, so TPG don't have DSLAMs installed there). I'm stuck on TPG's 80Gb ADSL1 plan (35Gb peak plus 45Gb off-peak for $69).

When I move house shortly I won't even be able to get ADSL at all, as there are no ports left. :( Yay to Telstra and the developers for being cheap in the new estates and not installing enough infrastructure. :(

    • I couldn't get ADSL2+ with TPG… so I ended up going with iinet… with Naked DSL. It's a reasonable plan… and like many have said before - WAY BETTER VALUE than Telstra. :) Maybe you could try iinet?

  • I'm on lidcombe exchange here in NSW
around 1km from exchange.. I can say perfectly i get good adsl2 speeds with MINIMAL lag even gaming.. it's awesome for the amount of data you get.. i can never really finish / go over my plan and get shaped but the plans just keep increasing with higher data limits etc.
Minimal downtime unless if there is an outage.. Even then i just call TPG and it comes back ASAP when they are done…

  • TPG plan upgrade is getting like Domino's discount coupon, so often :-)

Unfortunately not my provider - and no ports at TPG

  • Watch out with the telstra line rental. I know someone that was with bigcon and then changed to exetel. Now he wants to lower his line rental to budget but they won't let him as budget won't allow internet from another ISP…

    • I've been on the budget plan for ages with TPG ADSL2+, never had any issues.

      • Same here. I was on budget line rental with ADSL1 from Exetel, now ADSL2+ from TPG. No problems with Telstra. Ring and complain. You will manage to get it.

      • Yeah they changed the conditions a while ago, I best you're on the old conditions. If you sign up new, you're bound by these new ones.

    • +1

depend how smart u are on the phone with them. normally the sales will ask you tricky question such as, do you have internet at home. now it is depend on your answer, if you said yes. then they will ask you again, do you have broadband or cable.
my answer is wireless with unwired. then they start doing their cross sell, just said no thanks. i just want get this home line budget pls.

back to first question, if they ask you about broadband and your answer yes. and you tell them that you with exetel, etc. off course you can not lower to home line budeget. coz the term and condition already state you can not have internet connection with other provider.

    • When I arranged to go on budget recently, I had to agree not to go with a naked ADSL provider who also makes some form of internet telephony available.

I can go with a naked ADSL provider later, just that the budget plan would no longer be available to me.

      • I may be missing something here, but if you go with a naked adsl provider… don't you cancel your phone line… isn't that the point?

  • Some of my friend are on the old plan just go shape recently, they are being shaped @ the 512Kbs? does the new shape speed apply to the old plan?? or is this a glitch??

    • Probably a glitch. A nice glitch though :D

  • don't trust tpg that price is to low for that amount

    • they are cheap, coz the ceo is smart. he know how to do business. cost cutting in the right place.
not like your bloody telstra. cost cutting but still selling in the premium price. with lower customer service.

you should compare with Singapore, SGD 50 unlimited download cable broadband with speed 8Mbps.

  • Not for me. ADSL2+ not available from TPG or Optus in my area. BUT recently, Telstra has ADSL2+.

  • I think this plan is worth finally moving from my grandfathered 200GB (60 + 140) plan.

  • TPG has good value plans - hopefully other ISP's will follow. Maybe one day we'll have similar internet to America or England.

    • Not until our infrastructure permits it. We're getting there with DOCSIS 3.0 (Telstra's HFC), but we probably won't be seeing competitive consumer rates for years. (for those speeds) The NBN will bring us closer rolls eyes in 10 years.

    • In my experience america has the worst internet in the developed world which ranks behind Europe and even Australia. While I was living there it was incredibly slow and looking at it now, it's not changed. Here's some examples:

AT&T (One of the bigger providers and sponsor of Williams F1)
Downstream Speed: Up to 6.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 768 Kbps
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=6431 (This is the "Elite" plan which is their fastest one apparently)

Verizon (Fairly good competitor but not available in all areas)
Downstream Speed: Up to 7.1 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 768 Kbps
      http://www22.verizon.com/Residential/HighSpeedInternet/Plans…

      QWEST
Downstream Speed: Up to 20 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 896 Kbps
      http://www.qwest.com/#hsi

In comparison Australia offers the following (Plus it also offers the benefit of living in Australia, an awesome country, unlike the country mentioned above).

      Telstra Bigpond Cable
Downstream Speed: Up to 8 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 128 Kbps

      Telstra Bigpond Cable Extreme
Downstream Speed: Up to 30 Mbps (Sydney/Melbourne), 17 (Most other major cities)
Upstream Speed: Up to 1000 Kbps

Apparently telstra have launched a 100Mbps connection in Melbourne but I'm still unsure on the details.

      http://www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/cable/plans-and-offers…

      TPG ADSL2+
Downstream Speed: Up to 24 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 1000 Kbps
      http://www.tpg.com.au/dslam/faq.php

      "20%, 50%, 70% of these ADSL2+ customers are achieving speeds of approximately 20Mbps, 15Mbps and 10Mbps respectively"

      Internode
Downstream Speed: Up to 24 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 1000 Kbps
      http://www.internode.on.net/residential/broadband/adsl/extre…

I say this because when I often game online with my mates on the 360, americans often whinge "You're cheating, I'm in yellow, you're in green, that's not right". If I play alone, then yeah they get host. But in reality, they have crap internet, and a crap country in comparison to us :)

      • I think you may be forgetting that they (the US) already have fiber rolled out :)

        http://www22.verizon.com/Residential/FiOSInternet/Plans/Plan…

        Download up to 50 Mbps/
        Upload up to 20 Mbps

Yes, it's not available in all residential areas, but we're only just starting to get fiber now (HFC or DOCSIS 3.0) and it's only provided by Telstra. The NBN will provide broadband to all homes (minimum speeds of 24mbps), but this won't happen for ten years.

        http://www.speedtest.net/global.php

Whilst not necessarily the most 100% accurate data, the US is evidently ahead of us in speeds (not to mention that most plans are now unlimited, as far as I'm aware). Their infrastructure is a lot better than ours.

        • Their infrastructure is MUCH worse than us. Much much worse. They haven't redeveloped their infrastructure (in the places I lived anyways) as much as here. We still lag behind certain parts of Europe.

Also this 50MB/s is very restrictive, just as restrictive as Melbourne's 100MB/s so we win that.

Speedtests can be a bit dodgy, quite often it's universities and campuses trying to show off. In reality, residentially, they are far, far behind.

Please don't take this post as criticism.

          • @Kranbone: Oh — wouldn't take it as criticism. Merely pointing out that their internet is obviously not as bad as you implied it was ;)

There's no real way for us to compare the infrastructure without actually being over there at the moment, but based on their plans/prices, I don't see any reason that would point to their infrastructure being worse than ours? (Except that you've been over there - many years go is what I can infer from your posts).

I'd contest that we don't "win", simply because DOCSIS 3.0 is in Melbourne residential area at the moment (and that's it), and I don't think they've even rolled out any plans, yet… whereas Verizon is one of many that provides FTTH over there.

            • @pais: There's also the fact that the US was voted as having the number 1 broadband service in the world, followed by Japan, Korea (I think), then Aus - yeah, Aus is #4 on the list - so if survey results are anything to go by…..

              • @Mazley: I'd rate the Japanese and South Korean services ahead. Also Sweden had fairly good broadband. What was the survey?

            • @pais: I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way :)

My point I'm trying to make is a lot of people feel we're the laughing stock of the internet world because we're more isolated but it isn't the case, especially in comparison to america.

My belief in the infrastructure was partly due to the fact that a lot of their infrastructure was developed and designed many many decades ago with only periodic updates. This goes for both rail and communications. If you look at companies like Japan and South Korea, both of which were devastated by war, they were able to rebuild from the ground up and plan more suitably for future infrastructure (if that makes sense).

I've never known anyone to have that Verizon speed, especially at that price in america. I think given that, on average, we still win.

              • @Kranbone: I'm not (and haven't been) contending that Australia's infrastructure sucks (and I'm sure it'll improve 10x in as many years). Rather, just that we're not exactly the #1 in the world and we're not at a point where we can offer what the skazclaw is wanting - yet.

Again, I'm unsure of what quantifiable variables you're taking into consideration (Aus telecommunication infrastructure vs. US..) but based on ISPs, prices, and speeds, we're definitely getting the short-end of the stick. Having said that, I digress, as it seems to be a fairly futile argument — and if you want to think that Australia has a better infrastructure (than the US directly), that's your prerogative… but you haven't really made any case for that.

                • @pais: I'm not saying we're number 1 either but we're better than america :)

We obviously have different opinions but we'll have to agree to disagree. When I lived there earthlink and bellsouth were the worst ISPs.

  • I was wondering what is the catch with giving extra download coupled with faster shaping, but then I saw that once you accept these new plans they can change your peak and offpeak time (not the length in hours, just the time of day) as they see fit and therefore be able to better balance the load:

    *Monthly Usage Quota:
TPG may, on giving you 7 days notice by email, adjust the start/finish (but not the length) of peak/off peak times.

    • exetel is better in that area, full 12 hours from 12-12 iirc and only 10gb less peak

    • if u are using 80% of your peak/ off peak capacity from the previous day, on that day u will get email reminding you. example u get allowance for peak 10gb, and today you have used 9.8gb, the next day u get email reminder and also u can check in their website. if today u exceed your allowance, they will cap your speed on the following day for peak or off peak season that you exceed. so if your peak exceed, but off peak not, so only peak get cap. that's one of my favorite from tpg.

  • Good plan for a downloader.

Unfortunately pings are pretty poor so it isn't ideal for gamers.

    • My pings are great on TPG. I get 10ms to Sydney Internode servers, after I got interleave disabled.

    • What's your definition of poor? I get about 29ms to tpg.com.au in Sydney, I'm in Melbourne.

    • My ping is 10ms to a sydney server on speedtest.net and I'm using a wireless USB dongle to connect to my router/modem.

  • +1

anyone using TPG in perth around claremont? i would liek some FeEDBack before i jump on board :D

  • Shame, no ADSL2+ for me dont they want to spend upgrade money in Perth…

    • Same here…not available in my area, only 7kms from city :(

    • DAMN PERTH =(

  • no exchange in wolli creek sydney :(

  • I shall be moving from the old SUPER 150 Plan (40Gb + 110GB) to Super Fast Heavy /160GB $69.99 160GB (80GB+80GB) 512K/512K

    EXCELLENT :D

  • good grief I only just changed plans 2 days ago, oh well guess ill change at the end of the month again, extra 10 gig and faster shaping speed here we come.

    • Haha, similar thing happened to me, I only changed about a week ago :P

      • I changed in October from 50gb to 80gb, then in November from 80gb to 100gb, so this month I'll go from 100gb to 120gb all for the same price.
Won't get the throttle warning message for a while. :)

I've been with them for a while, from 20gb in 2005 for the same price as I'm paying now.

My advice is don't do any 18 month contract with them cause the price will change before then.

        • I have a contract with them.. And I just upgrade my plan whenever they change it.

Had to get a contract when I moved from adsl to adsl2+

  • Originally I signed up with the 50GB plan which had a static IP. Not using the 50GB I downgraded after some time (it was a free downgrade) to the 30GB plan. Strangely enough the new 30GB is 40GB so I wonder how long it will take for that to get up to 50GB. It's really good value and apparently all plans now come with a static IP.

    • i prefer dynamic, by reseting my modem i got new ip address, then i can continue free download

  • This is a great deal, I just upgraded to this.

Did anyone notice any existing mobile 49 plans will automatically reset to $14.99/month once you upgrade? I was only paying $9.99/month.

    There's always a catch!

  • TPG internet connection is great I have been with them almost one year. My exchange is Oaklaeigh but I cannot access iptv. They can't figure out what's wrong with that. Is any one at Oakleigh Exe who can access iptv?

    • Sorry for the answer delay. I'm on the oakleigh exchange (at the very border) and IPTV works great for me

(Thanks for pointing it out, I never knew about it!)

I'm using Firefox and a Netcomm NB5plus4W - one of the modems TPG strongly backs. Had to set up connections using 192.168.1.1 .

  • BLAH! still no ports in my exchange :(

BTW I love how they say 512K and 1MB, meaning nothing and 1 megabyte respectively. 1 megabyte is not a speed, 1mbps is though.

    • I'd assume that the '/s' is assumed!

    • Haha, yeah, true that :(
There's still a lot of people that use "MB/s" instead of "Mb/s" >_<

  • what the? after changing my package from the 70gb+80GB to the new 80GB+80GB it restarted my peak and offpeak usage

    • that's because the monthly cycle restarts.

      • LOL SERIOUS before i changed i prolly used up like 30gb now back to 0GB WIN!!!

        • that is the beauty of TPG :)

  • mm i want to downgrade my plan to the $49.99 one from the one im on now … but its going to cost me $59 to do :(

    mumbles away

    • u still in the contract right?

  • If only I could switch … the Expected Active Date for my exchange has been moved back three months in a row when it was in the "Final Testing Stage" back in October (or earlier).

  • These prices are incredible. Ive only been with TPG about 6 weeks and I have already changed my plan twice. Now im going to have to do it again! To those wondering if they should take the plunge I can highly reccomend TPG. My last ISP was a very very good local isp with fantastic speeds and no downtime. Ive yet to see any downtime and my speeds are great. I sync at around 23000/1000 :)

    • how far are u from the phone exchange?

  • -1

TPG also have an invisible proxy, FYI.

    • +2

Not for a long time now…why do people keep repeating outdated information?

    • They don't any more. that was a long time ago. The proxies don't exist any more, pinging them results in nothing.

  • Exetel has 35gb peak and 60gb off peak ADSL2 for $35 per month on a 12 month contract. Trying to decide getting either 60/60 TPG deal or the exetel one. How does TPG and exetel compare? similar?

    • remember with exetel, if u exceed ur limit, they charge you 1.5/gb

and u need have $30 line rental with them as well

with tpg, u can trick telstra with their 21 home line budget.

lets we do comparison in here

      tpg
line rental with telstra budget 21 + $5 with pennytel + $50 tpg (120 gb allowance and capped speed 512kbps)

      exetel
      line rental 30 + 50 adsl2+ (Exetel (110 gb, exceed limit $1.5 / GB)

Which one do u prefer? I more prefer tpg, for sure, value for money.

      • Thanks for the reply. On the exetel site they have a BYO phone line ADSL2 packages as well.

        http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_adsl2_nf.php (right at the bottom)

they also have a 50gb peak and 60gb off peak for $50 month on a 12 mth contract with $60 line activation. Their off peak is from midnight to noon. These TPG and exetel deals just sound too good to be true because all this time I have been on optus cable 7gb peak /14gb off peak plan paying $50 a month (after $10 discount for having phone and optus tv with them).

        • one more thing, exetel doesn't have iptv, tpg has iptv and free to use and not include in your download allowance.

          • @dragonrabit: The IPTV isn't very good though, IMO. Not many good channels.

            • @Daniel15: my wife like watching overseas channel, which is good for me compare than i have to pay another $30 extra for her to watch that extra channel

and i like their bloomberg tv, compare than i have to subcribe with foxtel

may be not good for local people

        • I am on the optus cable 7/12 450 plan too but not ADSL in Croydon VIC

  • btw thanks for the post :)

  • sorry typo —> 25gb peak and 60gb peak (midnight to noon i think) for $35 per month from exetel

  • Thanks for the heads-up on the new plans. Hoping the change will go through quickly :)

  • I just spoke with the TPG sales department and they informed me that the VOIP plans will be upgraded also, however there is currently no time frame for when this is going to occur.

  • -1

I live in Wolli Creek Sydney but their closest exchange is rockdale which is 4 km away:( Anyone know which ISP has an exchange closer to wolli creek?

  • TPG FTW.

Exetel are much better value. Exetel give you mora data, cheaper price, shorter contract and cheaper start up.
    Compare here:
    http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/isp-340-6/exetel-naked-adsl2-n…
    http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/isp-18-6/tpg-internet-resident…

    • Exetel are not much better value, they do not give you more data, and they are not cheaper… though some are slightly cheaper, others are not cheaper, and while some give you slightly more data for a similar price, others cost more for a comparable amount of data…

Exetel's plans are slightly different, and depending on your requirements may be better value, or not.

I had serious ongoing issues (speed and latency were a joke, specifically at certain times of day) with Exetel, and moved to TPG, who have not had any issues. To be fair, Exetel did eventually manage to sort out their issues to my understanding, though it did take them some months to do so (an unacceptably long time in my opinion), and my friends still on Exetel do not have any major issues anymore.

How good are TPG for gaming?

I get 9ms on Bigpond Gamearena servers using Bigpond.

Do TPG even have gaming servers?

    Naked updated

  • been getting more data using the $70 per month plan for ages. just downgraded my spend to $50 with the 60+60. staying with tpg until aapt sorts out teething problem with unlimited plans.

  • Can any other TPG users tell me if they have had any problems. (ie: downtime/customer service)

    • i use TPG in the northern suburbs of Melbourne ..

      No problems with downtime ..

Customer Service .. sometimes they can be a bit hard to understand but it really depends what you want to do. My ADSL2 service i've never had to call them about. I have a mobile through them, and yes i've called, but that was to turn my roaming on when I went overseas. No problems getting it done .. just a few statements and questions repeated numerous times.

I've had service now for bout 6 months. Prior to that i was with Ecomtel who had good rates, except they went crap and heaps and heaps of people left (looking at Whirlpool comments). Prior to that I was with TPG ..

I'm bout 2.2km's or something from the exchange .. get about 700-800 kb/sec download and bout 100ish upload. It's synching at like 8 meg down and 1 meg up. Pretty good for that distance actually :)
