SYD/MEL/BRIS to LAX $444USD (~$576AU) or NY $605USD (~$786AU) Return w/ Qantas + Europe on Sale

2930

EDIT: Looks like most of the great deals are gone. Though there are still a few around apparently. Keep an eye on the comments.

Crazy cheap price to LA from Sydney or Melbourne (and Brisbane as commented below)

I've plugged in a few dates and seems that there are fares available for most of October and November 2015. Also getting reports for fares this cheap in December and January.

Also, awesome prices to New York, had to work a little harder to find dates for that one.

Adelaide to LA is coming in at about $786AU.

Other reports of fares to London / Paris / San Fran are mentioned in the comments for under $1000.

Try using the search function at http://www.skyscanner.com/ the ability to search the whole month makes it a little easier to find the cheap fares.

UPDATE 2:

2/7 4:40PM:

Hi everyone, just an update following yesterday’s glitch where mistake fares were incorrectly offered for sale by some US based online travel agents.

Apologies for the confusion. The glitch was fixed at 11:30am AEST, however I'm pleased to let you know that Qantas will honour the bookings in this case.

Woo hoo!

UPDATE:

12:58PM:

An update for you savvy AFFers celebrating Xmas in July with these mistake fares: they’re not valid and have been removed from sale. We’re currently following up affected bookings.

Expect bookings to be cancelled shortly.

but the deals are "infant"ely cheaper

    • I was able to book infant a seat through priceline.

      • Can you explain how ? They clearly state that for infant seats - directly talk to airline

  • +4

All deals gone? Sky scanner shows the cheap price but when it actually pulls the fare it is full price - oh well.

Really need an app that sends me an electric shock when a new OzBargain deal is posted where number of likes rises quickly meaning it is a hot deal - a few hours and it's gone!!

  • Thanks Op. Booked through priceline, confirmed for late oct after logging into QFF. This just made my partners birthday that much better. Now to spring for accomm at disneyland which will offset the savings by a bit.

    THANKS!

Qantas has confirmed to Australian Frequent Flyer that the fares are not valid and that they are currently following up affected bookings. http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/cheap-in…

    Aww :(

    • +2

Oh poop, glad I didn't tell my kids about Disneyland after all.

      • If I pay for seat selection on the flight via the Qantas site, do you think that will keep the booking in there?

        • no harm in trying!

        • @tryonthis:

It's been stuck on the "Processing Your Request" screen for 10 minutes. :( Cmon Qantas, take my $100 for nothing.

EDIT: After 10 minutes, it finished processing.

        • @neil: I did the same (error booking with points). Got a confirmation on page that it succeeded and they are sending an email to confirm. But no such email, and my selected seats haven't 'stuck'. I don't dare call them……..

        • +1

          @muncan:

Yeah, finally got an email. Only $50 to pick 4 seats. Bargain!

        • I paid for seat selection but have just received a cancellation notification from Flight Network. My booking number no longer works on the Qantas site (it did earlier).

        • @neil: Worked out its my QF11 SYD>JFK flights that are preventing my seat selection sticking, as although it's the same flight number we swap to a different plane at LAX (A380 becomes a 747-400). Have now booked all my other seats (used points). Really don't want to call them to select seats for the split QF11 flight!!

  • Im still getting sub $1000 but its with emirites though. If I book do you think it would be cancelled too? Or this just a qantas stuff up?

  • BNE to LGW seems to be quite cheap (FlightNetwork) on specific dates towards the end of the year and early next year.

  • looks like fares will be canceled

    • Someone needs to flag this as EXPIRED.

  • +3

I didn't purchase fares, but will watch the way this plays out with interest. It's important to note that Qantas was made aware of these fares prior to 9 am this morning (check out the posts to their Facebook page), yet people were still able to book them well up until midday, no doubt resulting in hundreds of extra bookings of the erroneous fares. No doubt it will be a challenge for Qantas to follow these all up.

I also note that on Facebook, when the fares were queried, Qantas simply kept trotting out the line "we are unable to comment on third party website airfares, please follow up directly with <third party website>. Thankfully Red Roo on Australian Frequent Flyer has now come back to clarify Qantas' position, but he/she has come to the party a bit late!

  • Any deals in December from Sydney.

lol, it seems qantas acknowledged that price there?

      anyway, screenshotting

    • +1

      That's a cracker.

  • +4

Didn't end up booking anything as I was too slow to get wife's approval..

Kudos to the OP and good luck with all of you who booked. Hopefully Qantas will honor the deal.

  • Qantas price gouges customers using fuel surcharges ie. on frequent flyer redemptions. It's satisfying when the tables are turned and the use of fuel surcharges backfires on Qantas.

    • +1

      ??

      • Fingers crossed they don't cancel the 3 flights you booked mate, good luck.

  • +1

Searched not long ago & found a winner with qantas 22/11 - 23/12 585.46 return Qantas….keep searching people

    • I can confirm def deals out there

      • +3

go right through past and proceed with payment, then check. its prob still showing but not processable

        • hmm true. but I already bought my fares. just checking for fun

      • +1

No. There are cheap fares in websites like skyscanner or cheapoair but once you enter your credit card details the fare changes considerably.

I already had experiences with cheapoair of very low fares that become impossible to book.

  • At 2:45 pm Skyscanner -> Cheapoair is stil showing Bri-LAX return in March for A$626 and it can be booked. If this is a Qantas screw up they're really showing us the finger. But then again why am I surprised, it's typical of Qantas really…no respect for the flying public.

    • Update: At 6 pm the cheap fare has been withdrawn, now A$1148 .. :-( .. !!

  • +1

I haven't booked myself, but expect Qantas to honour these fares noting that even AirAsia honoured their price error that only charged taxes for their "business class" tickets during peak Easter period last year.

Would be poor form if not honoured.

Flightnetwork failed to secure my bookings with Emirates

    • Oh no! I booked with them! How did you find out, did they send you an email? I have the e-ticket but no itinerary yet.

      • They sent me a confirmation, then 1 hr later they send send me an email saying they can't secure fares at this price.

    • My booking with FlightNetwork fell through as well. I first got a call saying that the booking was confirmed. About an hour later, I got a call from them saying that they couldn't process my payment and that I should get in touch with my bank. I called up CBA and was told that there should be no issue whatsoever. I then called up FlightNetwork and said everything should be fine and they were like, yup not a problem but your fares will now be $6000 (which was close to double what I had initially locked in :P).

      • +1

How do you contact them? International call?

        • Yup, international call

      • hey mate,

apologies for hearing your flight didnt go through.

did you try looking up your flight on the qantas website before it was "cancelled"?

        • How do you do that? I only have the e-ticket number. No confirmation number from Qantas.

        • @AmericanDad: i booked through expedia, and got my confirmation number straight away

        • Hi madmouse58,

No I didn't as my flights were through Emirates.

    • +1

That's because they don't have realtime availability like the big guys (Expedia, etc.). They offered you a price they THOUGHT it would be, then tried to actually buy it after you committed. By comparison, Expedia etc. do it on the spot.

  • +1

Will be very surprised if they cancel these. It'll be a PR nightmare. They honoured last years fares when they were widely available on expedia Brazil. As long as they are covering taxes on these fares they will go ahead

  • +1

I booked with priceline.com with Qantas for March, still haven't heard anything just yet. I can see the hold on my money from my CC though
anyone else booking with Priceline.com heard ?

    • +2

Same deal. Still yet to hear anything although I called Qantas earlier today and they said it was confirmed.

      • +1

Checked under my frequent flyer and tried to upgrade - wouldnt let me due to the fare type … but shows up in my itinary there.

        • Likewise. Still able to view my itinerary on the Qantas website. A good sign I hope.

  • hey so I paid approx. $850 return to NYC.

It's cheap but it's not like SUPER SUPER cheap is it? coz we already know there have been cheap fares to US lately.
Sale fare SYD to NYC would be around $1300-$1400?

    • +1

yo you did fantastic! I paid 1340 return to MLB - SF - NYC

  • +1

I wonder if Qantas saying to the US DOT that they didn't charge enough fuel surcharge is a good enough excuse to cancel fares booked through US online travel sites and going to the US.

    https://cms.dot.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/Mistaken_Fare_P…

The authority to pursue or not to pursue enforcement action against airlines or other sellers of air
transportation with respect to air travel consumer protection and civil rights requirements lies
with the Department’s Office of the Assistant General Counsel for Aviation Enforcement and
Proceedings. The Assistant General Counsel has decided not to enforce section 399.88 with
respect to mistaken fares while the Department completes the aforementioned rulemaking
process. As a matter of prosecutorial discretion, the Enforcement Office will not enforce the
requirement of section 399.88 with regard to mistaken fares occurring on or after the date of this
notice so long as the airline or seller of air transportation: (1) demonstrates that the fare was a
    mistaken fare4
; and (2) reimburses all consumers who purchased a mistaken fare ticket for any
reasonable, actual, and verifiable out-of-pocket expenses that were made in reliance upon the
ticket purchase, in addition to refunding the purchase price of the ticket. These expenses include,
but are not limited to, non-refundable hotel reservations, destination tour packages or activities,
cancellation fees for non-refundable connecting air travel and visa or other international travel
fees. The airline may ask the consumer requesting out-of-pocket expenses to provide evidence
(i.e. receipts or proof of cancellations) of actual costs incurred by the consumer. In essence, the
airline or seller of air transportation is required to make the consumer “whole” by restoring the
consumer to the position he or she was in prior to the purchase of the mistaken fare. The
enforcement policy outlined in this notice is temporary and will remain in effect only until the

that to obtain the fare, some purchasers had to manipulate the search process on the website in order to force the
conversion error to Danish Krone by misrepresenting their billing address country as Denmark when, in fact,
Denmark was not their billing address country.
2 See Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, Docket DOT-OST-2014-0056, available at,
    http://www.dot.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/Passenger%20Prot…
    (April 14, 2014).
3 Although the airline or seller of air transportation may promptly correct a mistaken fare and halt the sale, due to the
rapid speed at which information is disseminated, significant ticket sales, sometimes in the thousands, may occur
    before the fare becomes unavailable.
4 The burden rests with the airline or seller of air transportation to prove to the Enforcement Office that an
advertised fare and the resulting ticket sales constitutes a mistaken fare situation. If a sale does not qualify as a
mistaken fare situation, the carrier or other seller of air transportation is bound by § 399.88.
    3
Department issues a final rule that specifically addresses mistaken fares. If, based on comments
received in the rulemaking process, the Department determines that section 399.88 should
remain as written, airlines and other sellers of air transportation would be expected to comply
and the Enforcement Office would enforce the requirement.

      Shhhhh don't give them ideas

      • +2

Hahaha :) Just make it difficult. We booked through globally recognised travel companies who allow payment in other currencies and have added non refundable hotel and travel costs as we are yet to be contacted nearly 8 hours post payment.

If they do honor I guess we'll be sitting at the back next to the toilet for getting a fare at this price point.

    • +1

In USA they don't rip people like here for Fuel levy. For example, I booked LAX-SEA return with points, the total tax was $11 return.. I normally see flying out of USA to Aus is always cheaper than Flying out of Australia to USA… Hoping that one day this will end!

      • Also why you want to be an AA (American) frequent flyer rather than Qantas. No fuel/fees rip off!

        • not sure why you got negged for that?

  • -2

Its my understanding that once the ticket is issued (not just booked) they have accepted the sale and it cant be cancelled due to wrong price or similar. I don't remember where i saw this but pretty sure it was something official like fair trading or similar.

Has anyone had a ticket cancelled ?(not booked and "confirmed" but where the ticket has been issued to you)

    • More importantly, has anyone been issued the ticket, went to buy travel insurance, got the ticket cancelled and now attempting whether to make a claim?

    • +1

      That's incorrect.

Remember it's also just a ticket, the service has yet to be provided.

      • You are wrong. vanleeuwen is correct.
Have a look at contract law - then you will see why your argument is a non-starter.

        • Yes, because that's why Qantas with their stacks of lawyers cancelled and refunded many of the purchases. Not all, but some.

          You think that.

        • @jesseboy89:

Many are not always right. Why did they not cancel all?
They only cancelled those were NO tickets were issued and no payment was taken, precisely because by that point a valid contract was in existence rather than an invitation to treat.
Seriously, read up contract law. I think after 8 years of studying and many more years of practice I think I know my contract law.

  • Status update people?

I booked through orbitz, got a booking request email (after booking) then a Flight confirmation / e ticket 10 mins later.

Still no sign of a cancellation…

    • Which airline? Cancellations, if any, are due tomorrow.

  • +1

What a cock up for ozbargaintravelday!

  • Well I booked this morning just after 10am, ~$750 SYD to LAX out on 12/1/16, in on 28/2/16. Haven't heard from anyone so I hope it won't be cancelled.

This is fantastic for my situation. I might be going to study in the USA first half of next year and won't need a return ticket (as I will probably head on a round the world trip after studying), in which case $750 is cheaper than a one way. If those plans fall through, I will just go on a 6 week holiday and be back in Australia for uni. God, I'm hoping Qantas honours the tickets.

Booked through priceline and got immediate confirmation that I could see in my qantas account

    • Well I booked through Flight Network and also got immediate confirmation that I could see in my qantas account. I even selected my seats but then got a cancellation notice.
"This email is to advise that we are unable to proceed with your Flight Network reservation as the quoted fare AUD xx$ is not valid and the Airlines have auto cancelled your reservations. Your credit card has not been processed. "

      • +2

Flight Network are not real time. Glorified secretaries. Sorry, but for deals like this, you definitely don't want to use Flight Network or any other providers who do not have real time availability. You want to stick with Priceline, Orbitz, Expedia, etc etc.

      • My credit card was charged the second I hit order. Not holding my breath, just holding some hope

    • +1

Hey, I am assuming you will travel on an AU passport? I have heard people getting hassled for not having a return ticket and refused entry into USA. Look into it before you go or be ready to carry a lot of evidence you intend to eventually leave.

      • Thanks for the warning, I have heard the same thing myself before. Outbound flight is booked for mid Jan, return flight is end of Feb. If certain personal circumstances pan out (hopefully) I'll be studying in the US next year for a semester and just not use the flight back, so I don't think they will require a return ticket for a stay that long (although I'll make sure of this later). If that falls through, I'll take a nice 6 week vacation through the US and use the return flight back.

        • Sounds like a great adventure and wish you the best of luck with your studies and travels. If you are studying just have your enrollment details in your hand luggage or they will hassle you, or you might be lucky and get an easy going customs officer. Once I had a ticket for 3 weeks later and was going to a wedding - they asked to see the wedding invitation as proof. I told them I don't carry that but they can call the bride!

  • +1
  • +1

I saw this deal as soon as it got posted, given i'm settling a house soon and moving I'm skipping my o/seas trip this year.
Amazing prices here! I wish all of those who scored the great pricing the best of luck… really hope they don't dishonour it and claw it back.
    Top stuff to the OP!

  • +1

Wow what an interesting thread! Good luck to all of those that got in in time. Slightly disappointed that I am not in there with you sweating over this one as I purchased ticket a few months back.

    • no1's sweating. positive thinking!

  • +1

No news although my flight is still active in the Qantas system. If this is cancelled Qantas are going to lose a long term business customer. They've lost my luggage on countless occasions so this really will be the final straw.

    • +2

      Same here

  • +4

My mate at Qantas holidays starts his shift this afternoon, he has promised to let me know any news as soon as he hears.

  • Everything still showing as fine at my end and no further updates from priceline overnight. Im getting to the point of booking accommodation - will give it 24 hours just in case.

  • +10

    Accommodation booked. Thug Life.

    • +1

I am going to wait and make sure, but I love your positivity

  • +4

The longer Qantas leave it the harder it will be for them commercially to cancel everyones booking. Alot of Angry and upset people, and the longer they leave it the more upset and angry they will get. It will also ruin there reputation, so they would need to take that into account.

  • +1

Looks like Qantas are still doing the sums…

Far out, I don't think it'd dent their profits by much at all, they can recoup it through other overpriced (domestic) fares?

  • +2

If nothing happens today. Fares will be honoured 100% - agree with @Montorola. They can't possibly leave people hanging. Especially as people may have booked and still not know it is a price error. Imagine that someone has booked 1000's of dollars of non refundable accommodation or tours? Are they going to be liable for that?

    • +1

Lol at all the thought of all our phones ringing today (without being answered). Reminds me of the end of The Lawnmower Man.

  • +4

Just spoke to Qantas and they said the tickets are confirmed, but she said she cant guarantee they wont be cancelled. She sent me an e-ticket to my email.

  • I'd laugh if they decide to cancel and give us a measly $50 QANTAS voucher to make up for it haha

  • +1

OK guys… lets have a show of hands… who bought fares and are they still valid?

  • Oh dear the mad squad is out. Threatening to boycott Qantas if it's not honoured etc etc.

Just like those boycotting Dick Smith, Harvey Norman etc for their price errors not honoured. Gee they must be a lot, look at the positive votes for the latest posts by these stores.

Then there is the one who has had their baggage lost numerous times. Really who are you kidding. If any airline lost my baggage numerous times I wouldn't book with them again even if the fares were this low.

The reality is going to be how many tickets where issued and the economics of that.

Plus the ones issued by a US agency like Priceline - the ones charged in US dollars, where US transportation law applies. Given the postings by some above, they need to be approved by DOT in the US before they can be cancelled. So that may take some time, they will have to make a submission for that to be approved.

If that is the case those with early bookings may get away with the booking, those with later bookings like myself may get these cancelled as the approval by DOT might be through by then.

Its a punt, If it comes off I will be happy. If it doesn't then I wont be going.

If I didn't book and it was "allowed" I would have been annoyed I didn't try.

So relax, threatening Qantas ✈️ with never going to fly with them again, here isnt going to make any diffference at all. 😀
