I do not need this but thanks for sharing. A++.

  • So basically this suits someone who doesn't use too much data as you sacrifice 5gb to extend its life by 9 months?

    • Yes. I fall into this category of less data users. This is good value to extend validity to 12 months.

      • +3

If you're a low data user, then Telstra does 5gb for $50 for 12 months expiry or 16gb for $140 2 YEARS expiry.

        https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/prepai…

        • +4

Most people know already, but Telstra broadband has a loophole meaning you can get 12gb for $17, though you will need to do a $50 or $140 top-up to extend the expiry up to 12 or 24 months.

There's more discussion over at whirlpool, but basically you transfer $1 using credit me2u to a recent telstra mobile broadband account to get 500mb of data. Use up a $30 starter kit that way and get 24 transfers = 12gb (with only a few days' validity, unless you keep extending it). Plus $24 android play store credit, and the 1.3gb of data from the starter kit, valid for 30 days.

No idea how long this loophole will be around for.

        • @nicois: Oh very handy to know!! Might have to look into it.

        • @nicois: Are you only allowed a max of 24 transfers? So after you've transfered your short expiry GBs over, if you add a $140 data plan to it, even the short expiry data becomes 2 year expiry?

How do you get the $17 figure?

        • @lostn: 24 transfers is $24 and 24x 25c fee. (eg the value of a $30 starter kit), so you can do more from other starter kits, or other accounts.

  • I know someone that is on the $44.90 plan now, can they buy this deal and extend it ? (they pay monthly by autopay credit card now)
    - Maybe they have to call customer service to apply the Voucher from coles ?

They don't need the 10GB plan btw.

    • +1

yes, the vouchers will work on existing Unlimited 5GB Plans

      • Thanks easternculture :) do they need to call up or can be done online ? ( i know your post says to call but unsure if that was due to the 10GB plan bizo)

(sorry haven't used Amaysim for ages myself)

        • I would strongly recommend you chat with them & request to manually apply the vouchers to the 10gb plan

        • @easternculture:

Thanks for your help eastern :) cheers. Just realised you talked of the 10GB plan ? not so much the 44.90 plan so still need to chat to the team at Amaysim ?

        • +1

          @snappy1234:

If your buying them for the purpose of the Unlimited 5GB plan, then you dont need to chat with the team

  • So do I say to customer service that I have 2x $44.90 recharge vouchers that I'd like to apply (along with the $15 credit that's already in my account) to the 10GB data plan?

    • maybe add something like you bought them with some extra cash you had on hand etc etc

  • +4

So confusing, it may actually be a good deal :)

  • Can't see the bar code via the link you provided. Can you please check?

    • didnt work with me on Chrome but works in Internet Explorer

      • Thanks, it worked for me via IE as well. That's probably the only purpose of IE left:)

        • Ive changed the image hosting to ozbargains file uploads. It should work with all browsers now

  • Is this any different to the previous deal? I bought those vouchers then went onto Amaysim chat. They would not let me use the vouchers to get 10GB data plan. They said they could ONLY be used to get a month of the Unlimited plan.

  • No offence but this is too much effort to simply get 10gb for $50 a month. I'm not sure if u mean its on going either or a once off 10gb for 12minths. Companies need to make it simple not dark science. Also a lot of ifs can see at some stage something going wrong and u having to call for hours just to be told it can't be done and ur left holding vouchers. Apart from that the network prob sucks balls anyways. Imo a poor deal and it shouldn't be how oz bargains works then again it's not ezyBargains.

    • +1

yeah, I had a chat with Amaysim online service, and they can't make it, we have to do manually, :-(

    • +7

Part of the purpose and/or fostered culture of this site is to allow a platform for like-minded cheapskates to share their money-saving schemes. These people help each other directly and also people like you who couldn't be bothered by informing consumers, improving market efficiency and increasing competition.

      • +1

If you did not understand what Scrooge is trying to say is, try and provide constructive criticism, instead of beating down on OP.

        • +2

Wasn't a beat down really. Prob better as a forum item than a bargain front page.

I'm not gina jump through hoops for 7hrs with a success rate of 50% to save 13cents :-)

      • Do you think the fairytale is working considering we I'm are paying twice the rate of 2 years ago for data?

Does the meaningless buzzword "market effiency" apply here and if so what is being made more efficient?

        • Do you think the fairytale is working considering we I'm are paying twice the rate of 2 years ago for data?

I was speaking generally. Tough to say here; you could've otherwise been paying 10 % more, who knows?

          What were/are you paying then/now?

Does the meaningless buzzword "market effiency" apply here and if so what is being made more efficient?

More information, price comparisons, third party reviews, etc. decrease consumer inertia and make the market more efficient. Essentially the ability of people to find the best value product or service for themselves is made more efficient.

    • +2

Companies need to make it simple not dark science.

You need to understand that this is not in their best interests as the current idiotic system has been concocted in order to make it impossible to do an accurate assessment of value so that they may charge confused customers more.

Confused really is what it is: a couple of days agao I was actually reading people commenting about how competition is driving down prices as they pay approximately twice what they previously paid for data.

So the practice will likely never cease until legislation is bought into existence to ban things like funny money, unlimited within limits, 7 variables to compare which no person is able to do in their head.

I do not consider this likely given AU govs previous record on screwing the consumer.

    • +4

This deal borderlines on hacking another offer, but with a risk of it not working the way you wanted, this is at the discretion of the rep you get at the chat team, it's not a warranty, you may have to spend on average half an hour to get to a chat session then if the first one won't do it for you you'll have to initiate another, and another if you're unlucky enough. Once something like this gets posted on OzB, Amaysim may get alerted then a directive not to honour these kind of requests to all the chat personnels may be issued. So make sure that you can live with being stuck with the monthly 5GB plan should you be in the unlucky category.

  • +2

This may work with other data/phone plans too but the 10GB plan would be the safest option and less complicated.

Wait, this could be more complicated?!
    Anyway, thanks ec!

  • Bpay $10 for $15 Worth of credit + 2 Coles Amaysim Vouchers for $39.60 = Total cost $54.60 (for $104.80 worth of credit).

You say Bpay $10 for $15 credit, so doesn't that mean the total cost should be $49.60?
Or is it meant to be Bpay $15 for $15 credit?

oh never mind, I missed reading the $5 Amaysim PAYG part

  • It is a good deal if you want to spend the extra time. I used 30% last week so it is about $70.

  • +6

I won't neg the post (because I applaud the OP for putting in the effort to explain the deal) - but from personal experience I think it would be hit-and-miss on whether you would be able to get the vouchers applied as credit to your account.

I've tried this tactic before, and was told they can no longer just apply the recharge value of the voucher. Which is fair enough. If the voucher says 1 mth Unlimited 5GB, then that's all you're entitled to. Technically you haven't bought $44.90 worth of credit.

Some may get lucky and get an amaysim rep who's happy to do it - but in my opinion it's a big risk if you're just buying the vouchers solely for the 'recharge credit'.

  • Also, once this deal is available, the more people who call up, the less comfortable the call centre staff will be to do this favour for customers. I also don't want to neg this deal because the effort is admirable, but I can imagine some people will get burnt, and amaysim will not be the one at fault…

  • If you put credit into your account but don't convert that credit into a plan, will that credit eventually expire? If you hold onto the recharge code and don't turn it into credit, will they expire too?

I want to hold onto them and have a year's worth of 5gb a Month.

    • Paper recharges do expire, either through a use-by date or they'll just fade depending on how you store them. Once converted/redeemed as they are intended for your credit won't expire, they're stacked as multiple individual recharges in your account

      • Can this recharge code only be used for the first month on an account and then it puts you on an auto billing cycle, or is it treated like prepaid and then you can add another month using another recharge code?

In other words will I have to cancel after the first month and use a new SIM?

        • These recharges are the same as the ones you'll be paying $44.90 for normally, except this time you're paying $17.90 when you buy a $2 Sim card in the same transaction, so can be used towards an existing account. When you activate the Sim card just make sure to select Bpay/voucher as payment method, check that auto renew is on if that's what you want, you can turn it off at anytime afterwards. If you plan to lock yourself into amaysim (or prone to losing things) then you can redeem all the voucher codes at once, but make sure you're happy with it first. You can give the remaining Sim cards to someone who prefers to port between different providers.
Edit: if you don't redeem them all at once, you'll have to option to flog them off on eBay or wherever should one day you decide amaysim is no longer for you

        • @bonz: if you don't set it to auto renew and you allow your credit to expire, will you lose your phone number? Can your number be assigned to someone else?

        • @lostn: you have 3 or 6 months after credit runs out, don't remember which, probably same rule as Optus'. You can transfer ownership by contacting support/chat team.

  • Yes I agree with Shake. I tried hard last time to be converted into pay as yougo plan.. could't do it.

  • +2

Appreciate the effort EC, but I don't think this will end well for a lot of people…

    • +1

Wonder how long until Amaysim sez no to doing this!

      • +2

In the early days people had about 50-50 chance, now may be 20%, come wednesday and beyond <5%

    • +1

      What a convoluted 'bargain'

  • +1

Don't forget… If you're a low data user, then Telstra does 5gb for $50 for 12 months expiry or 16gb for $140 2 YEARS expiry.

Everyday pricing, no special deals or calls required…… 4G, Telstra network etc.

    https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/prepai…

    • Thanks, I forgot about this from 2 minutes earlier…

      • Well one was a reply to someone now many posts up, this is a more general post about it. Depending on the setting you have you might not see the reply McFly.

    • Yeah I'm on this $140 with 2 years expiry + extra ~12GB from the $1 creditme2U "glitch" which is allowable by telstra. Plus the bonus of extra battery life if you happen to live in bad Optus coverage area

      • Care to explain this glitch?

        • @McFly: thanx Marty for saving my finger, say hi to the Doc for me :P

        • @McFly: That sounds like an even better deal than Amaysim. $50 for 5GB + $15 for a $30 starter sim (current special at Coles, but frequently recurring) gets you 17GB as opposed to 10GB. I bought the Amaysim 10GB data plan when it was $70.

        • @lostn: yeah me too - still happy with that deal.

  • +2

good stuff OP, its about finding great deals and sharing it, if your deal only helped the first few people who tried it, then that's bloody good enough. thumbs up

  • IS amaysim still doing their data cycle per 1MB rather than 10KB?

  • So can this make/receive phone calls? I think telstra one mentioned above cannot make/receive calls.

  • +1

Just checked the FAQs and noticed:

    "Can I tether with amaysim?

You sure can - you're free to tether or use your mobile device as a personal hotspot with the included data in FLEXI, UNLIMITED 2GB, UNLIMITED 5GB, UNLIMITED 7GB and any of our Data Packs. While we do support tethering for iPhones, Androids and other mobile devices, we do not provide personal hotspots for iPads. AS YOU GO customers will be charged at the casual rate of 7.2c/MB when they tether."

So beware if you intend to use iPads to provide personal hotspots.

  • Beware!!! Didn't work the last time.

  • For those that got in on the Optus mobile sim only plan (8gb for $50 monthly) plus you get $10 discount every month if bundled with homephone/internet. Youd then be able to share that data across 5 devices. For $40 per month, I'd say that beats a lot of what everyone is doing out there ATM. Though most of you here would still have months of stockpiled Telstra/Vodafone $1 sim packs :P

    • Can you receive/make calls on those share devices?

      • able to share that data

    • There was no stock on those $1 sim cards when I tried. They were Ozbargained everywhere. I wonder if "most of you here" had something to do with that?

  • Hmm so any update from anyone who has tried it today?

    • I bought one SIM and recharge. It states on the voucher that it's for a $44.90 plan so people trying to convert this to cash value for another plan might have difficulty convincing a CSR.

  • Can I buy 3x sim&vouchers and reuse them on the same account?
    Ie,
    1 account
Use 1 sim and 3x $17.90 vouchers to get the 5gb plan for 3months?
