Rechargeable Bluetooth Ghetto Blaster $25 In Store @ Target

1140

Would love to give credit to theearth but my wife deserves the credit here. She was looking for a gift for our daughter and found this online earlier today, and I told her I'd post it tonight on OzB. I'd totally forgotten about it until I saw the deal over at Buckscoop. Anyway, we bought one. Found a few customer reviews here. And delivery is free until tomorrow night. Enjoy :)

  • Ah crap, I was actually looking for one of these ):

Oh well, early bird, ETC ETC

I wonder if any of you will actually use it the way it was intended to be used, aka walking down the street ghetto blaster on shoulder, shopping for groceries ghetto blaster on shoulder, wife giving birth ghetto blaster on shoulder.

If you don't solemnly swear to live life ghetto blaster on shoulder… Shouldn't have bought :(

I was in Target at Myrtleford on the weekend and they had about 8 of these in pink on the shelf for $25. Might be an option for the snow bunnies?

  • Thanks OP.
I got the last boxed one at Springwood, QLD Target. The pink display model is still there. :)

    • Please let us know how it sounds when you get it home :)

      • +1

        Will do.
I got the pink one for my niece. :) I'll test it as it's for Chrissy.

I bought one from Target Hobart after seeing your post - thanks! It's playing disco loudly beside me (mobile > internet radio > bluetooth) and sounds pretty reasonable.

Maximum volume is probably a couple of watts.

Frequency response is 100Hz - 9kHz or so (pink noise to analyzer app):

Target had 12 on the shelf, 11 after I bought mine. Ten were pink, two/one black.

        • Cheers, and thanks for the feedback :)

I am also around this area, let me know if you find one and there are some others left.

  • For those who bought it any comments or reviews on this? I know it's not audiophile stuff but for $25 this seems pretty good for a fully portable bluetooth stereo sound system to use at BBQ, picnic, camping, kids parties etc.

  • There's 25+ at Perth CBD. All Pink, no black. Got one for the kids.

    • Any chance you could tell us what the sound quality is like please?

      • +5

Tested it out when I got home, impressed for the price. It's loud enough to fill a decent room, would work fine at the beach too. Quality of sound is what you'd expect for the original $80 sticker price, so good value at $25. Very little bass, but to be expected. Synced with an S3 no issues. Can charge the phone at the same time via a USB out, recommended only when plugged in tho.

        • Nice work! Thank you.

  • +1

Only 1 left at the Bourke St store (in PINK). Asked if I wanted a bag? nah mate, don't even need a box.

  • Theres around 10 left at Target Knox. All pink :( oh well it'll have to do..

    • OzBargainers! Make sure that you affix, vertically, a cassette tape between the speakers.

It'll make it look more like an authentic ghetto blaster!

  • Does it produce stereo sound? There are about 6 pink ones remaining in Target near Rundle mall in Adelaide..

    • +2

      Yes, definitely stereo.

      • Thanks.. will pickup one tomorrow :)

  • I need to work on B-Boy moves. Been years since I last broke out a move with a Ghetto blaster.

  • Folks

I see this black unit available online now. Just grabbed 2 and I got order confirmation email from target.

Chatswood, rockdale, parra stores have stock as per target customer service. Keep in mind their numbers are 2 days behind.

Don't head out to stores until you ensure its reserved for you.

    Good luck.

  • +3

There's still 6 pink ones on the shelf at Ocean Keys (Clarkson WA).

Sticker says $49, scans at $25.

    • +1

Down to three (2 boxed + 1 demo) pink ones left at Clarkson.

  • Melbourne CBD Bourke St seem to have more stock, 10+ in Pink

  • At least half a dozen pink at target reynella SA, bought one for my girls and it's pretty good for the price, nice sound.

    • Playback time via mixed use BT, FM radio & USB so far upwards of 15 hours for me after an initial overnight charge. Purchased a SanDisk cruiser fit mini usb for usb playback too so there isn't a huge usb stick sticking out of the player. I'm pretty impressed for the price so far.

  • Website says only 3 hours playback time from the rechargeable battery, which is not much at all.

Can anyone confirm this, or is this maybe using Bluetooth and could be more using audio in/radio?

    • +1

No, the GB-5000 leaflet (quote) gives the charging time as 3 hours; total play time when fully charged is up to 5-6 hours, depending on the type of music played and the loudness level.

      Batteries are 2 x 3.7V / 2Ah lithium (built-in)
Power pack is switch-mode 9V 1.5A (and it runs cool)

      Plays 16-320 kbps mp3 files

      Still happy with mine!

  • I picked up 3….

So far so good. Sound is pretty decent for $25… I was expecting it to be pretty average.

I rang a few stores to see who had stock.

Frankston (Vic) had approx 7 when I rang them yesterday.
Myrtleford (Vic) had approx 6 when I purchased 2 yesterday
Rosebud (Vic) had approx 5 when I purchased one today.
Albury (NSW) had approx 7 when I called yesterday.

    All stock was Pink/Magenta…

Good for camping, boat, out on the deck having a frothie (my mates purchased some too.. in Pink!! (For this money nobody cared about colour, function over fashion). It's more magenta than pink.. the silver speaker grills and surrounds break up the colour.

Might add it can charge a phone or USB device via it's rear USB port (not sure of the output voltage).

The build quality is above average at this price!

    • Can you charge it via USB?

      • u can only charge the boombox with the adapter provided, and u can charge ur portable devices via USB port at the back of the boombox only when connected to the main power (from the manual)

  • +1

    Anyone got theirs shipped yet?

  • Has anyone recieved an email saying their order has been shipped? Or been able to track the status in the website's members section?

At purchase I checked out as a guest (so I can't track the package or see the status), and saw in the order confirmation email that they will contact me once the order has been dispatched. I haven't got a dispatch email yet.

So I guess no boomboxes until mid next week at the earliest?

    • Mine hasn't shipped yet either

  • Gutted I missed this!

  • Mine shipped today. Even has a tracking number. Now I just have to get my Fresh Prince of Bel-Air costume ready.

    • Mine too :)

  • About 6 left at liverpool nsw ^^

  • Picked up a pink one today :) Just tested it out and pretty happy for the price, surprisingly loud!

  • Bought a pink one today! About 7 left at Melbourne CBD.

  • Just bought a pink one from Target Mawson Lakes, SA. They had at least 5 more.

  • I have a pink one….even though it is making me question my masculinity, is anyone else finding that the sound is a bit flat and hollow? Pretty sure this was to be expected at $25. I've tried fiddling with the bass and treble, at present t-3 and b-2 sound the most reasonable

    • B4 T4 for me, makes the sound a bit more full to my ears and doesn't distort.

  • +2

Just had my black one delivered. Very impressed with the sound quality via my iPhone's Bluetooth. It's far better than what I expected, and is plenty loud enough for what I need it for. I can't believe it even plays music stored on a USB thumb drive - how cool. Just sorry I didn't get 2 now. Half way through charging the battery, so next step is to see how long it lasts on a full charge. May even open it up to see if I can swap it out for a larger battery. So far, the only thing I don't like is the FM radio memory storage. Unless I'm doing something wrong, there's no way to instantly go to a stored station, but rather you need to select a stored location and wait 2 seconds for it to lock in. Small issue in the grand scheme of things. Cheers :)

    • +3

I'm also really impressed with the sound quality, functions and build quality of the unit. I was going to trade it with a friend, but I'll be keeping it for sure.

When you open it up take some pictures and post them here.

In the manual it appears to be powered by a 2cell 2000mah lithium battery, so it should be fairly easy to buy a higher capacity lipo and change it over provided there's internal space (which I'm guessing there will be heaps and could fit something like this in for more than 2x the battery life http://hobbyking.com.au/hobbyking/store/__9172__Turnigy_5000…)

I'm interested in finding a way to trickle charge it over a 5v USB connection. Doing some research on it now, but all I can find are devices that step down the lipo to 5v at usual mAh for phones, tablets, cameras and that. Can't seem to find one that steps up in the other direction.

      • +4

Got mine, tested it for 2 minutes then ripped it open :) Overall they're pretty well built little devices, especially for $25 :) Sound quality is 'good' but nothing more IMO.

As above, it contains 2 x 3.7V 2000mah Li-Ions connected in series to give 7.4V. These cells are heatshrinked with their temp sensor in a small enclosure moulded into the rear panel and are very easy to access. There's a slightly larger unused section directly beside them that would easily & neatly fit another two cells so what I would do is replace the original cells with higher quality versions then add another two in series and just parallel them alongside. A set of these would do the trick: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4x-Panasonic-NCR-18650-BF-3400mAh… as they're 3400s so just replacing the original two would potentially give close to twice the run-time but adding the 2nd set would quadruple it!

You can easily get small step-up modules off eBay to allow charging from a 5V (USB) source however something's gotta give so you'll be drawing just under twice the current. Shouldn't be a problem for most modern USB ports or USB chargers though as 2-3A isn't unusual these days however replacing the original batteries with double set of 3400s you'll still be waiting a while for it to fully charge and sucking a lot of juice from the USB supply in the process!

I think I'm fine to leave mine stock and just replace the cells when required as I doubt I'll need anything more than a few hours use from something like this. Might juice up the stock speakers though ;)

        Steve.
