lol @ when you follow the link to the HN site a chat box opens up saying: Hello Ozbargainer - Need any advice, talk to a expert now.

    • +7

      That's older than the internet.

  • May I know what how this is useful? Usually PS3 is already connected to a TV already which has tuner?
Or is this more for PS3 that are connected to monitors?

    • well, you can record with this.

    • You can record free to air TV on your Ps3 with it.

    • I found the quality of the tuner was better than my TV (Samsung Full HD). The sounds particularly was much clearer.

      • -7

Impossible, it is all the same data, the only difference is the rendering. That is, it is not the quality of the tuner, but that you like the picture, and sound the PS3 produces better than your TV. This could also be TV settings, as most devices have separate settings for video and audio, for each input on the device. eg HDMI1, HDMI2, Tuner, etc - all have there own settings.

        • +2

incorrect.. the tuning circuit on the device might be better than the tuner on his TV, thus providing a better picture and clearer sound. The tuner on my Sony Bravio picks up interference from somewhere with horizontal lines being the resulting image degradation, my USB TV tuner (connected to same antenna via a splitter) doesn't.

        • +2

@gizmomelb: If he was having reception issues and the PS3 tuner has better sensitivity and selectivity, than yes it could be a better result, but there was no mention of reception issues, just that the picture and sound are better. So if the reception is good enough on both tuners, the transport stream pumped through is the same data, and the only difference is the rendering chain to produce the video and audio.

        • +3

All I know is, switching between one and the other there is a clear difference in sound using the same speakers. THerefore I reject your 'impossible' and raise you a 'possible' because this is my reality. I'm glad this isn't an issue for you.

          @SirFlibbled:
Your TV is probably converting the audio to analogue or the AC3/DD to lpcm or something. Or enforcing DRC (or not enforcing) depending on your preferences.

Also it's possible the ps3 has nicer decoders for video or audio

    • +10

You can use this to record TV to your PS3s HDD. Also has a dual tuner so you can record one channel and watch a different one.

I've got mine connected to a PC and use it with Kodi. Works quite well.

      • +2

SweatyWalrus I went to + you but I accidentally pressed -
And now it won't let me change it. Sorry!

        • +2

          fixed :)

      • +1

SW, just wondering what software you are using for the backend with Kodi? I'm using ArgusTV but I find it tends to stop working after a while until you either re-connect the PlayTV or reboot the machine.

        • +2

I'm using MediaPortal as the backend on my HTPC (running Windows 8.1). It's worked great from day one and was pretty straight forward to get going. Definitely give it a try :-)

        • I've had some good results with Kodi on Openelec + TV headend for the back and front end on the newer Raspberry Pi.

        • @SweatyWalrus: Think I gave that one a try before but I'll give it another shot. Cheers :)

    • Yup, recording was the man thing. I found it dam handy

    • Back in the day when I had one of these, I'd actually use Remote Play to stream the PS3 to my PSP and watch TV on that when I was in another room or pooping or something. It was quite a nifty little thing to do like 5 years ago in the technological dark ages. Things advance so quickly now, I've got Foxtel on my phone with a simple app, back then this was incredible to me.

  • Anyone here use with WMC?

This product is currently out of stock.

  • Cheers just bought 1, my old internal one isn't a dual tuner so I'll see how this goes, should come in handy elsewhere anyway.

  • +6

It's a shame Sony doesn't make this useable with the PS4.

    • +1

Totally agree, its the number one reason I haven't purchased a PS4, if they made an updated version of the PLayTV I'd have purchased day one. Best PVR on the market in my opinion, stable and never forgets to record.

      • That's the worst reason not to get a PS4 lol they're awesome.

        • Not really most games are on the XBOX and the few that aren't I have no interest in playing, for me it's a very good reason

      • +1

I got the PS4 but would love to stop using the PS3. The PS4 is slowly getting there finally getting a media player (not sure why this wasn't built into the OS like on the PS3) and a barely passable ability to use a harmony remote. So mostly I still use my PS3 for all my media playing as it's just easier.

  • Won't work for delivery

  • +2

If u can get it this also works fine/well with your purchase of RPI2. Install the drivers & enable the TVHEadend server & client. Shazam tv on your RPI2. off course ull need to plug the sony tv box with a good signal antenna.

  • This product is currently out of stock.

Cool - stock is only 550km away!

And so ozBargainers from all over hit the highway, on the road to the country NSW town of Muswellbrook, in search of the elusive TV tuner.

  • Bought mine when it was on "sale" last time, way more expensive though but i love it.
Free software i found works best with on Win7 was a program called SmartDVB.

  • +2

These work well with OpenElec and XBMC :)

  • Work well with Media Portal also. Just ordered hopefully stock is available.

  • +1

I love when stores try to sell something at a dumb price for years and then realise they still have thousands in stock so they practically give them away for free.

  • Darn. Wanted to get one. Don't think there's any chance they'll be putting the up for delivery online huh? :P

  • 60 klicks from Muswellbrook, anyone want me to go for a drive?

  • ahh was excited that this was the newer Playstation TV (VITA Compatible) as they're selling for $25 in the USA. Still looking to buy one when they drop down cheap enough to $30, maybe $40 - they were bundled with PS4s last year, so sure someone will want to sell theirs cheap some time. Currently JB have the newer Playstation TVs for $79

    • Hah I thought that too and had a moment of dread (I just bought mine from someone who bought the PS4 bundle. Got it for new and sealed for $60 with a copy of the recipet for warranty purposes).

Dunno what the PSTV's will go to but I'm guessing they'll sell them low or keep bundling to get rid of them and people will keep selling them new on gumtree.

    Damn, nothing near Newcastle.

  • Nothing in Sydney :(

  • +1

Got the last one off the clearance table in Hobart. Tagged at $49.01 but scanned at $10 . Now to figure out how to use it. Then to put an antenna splitter in my roof.

  • Mine never worked on my fat PS3 to what I thought was acceptable.
eg. When I set it to record a program, if I decided to play a game or play a bluray/dvd, the recording was affected by the use of the laser I guess.
Don't know if this was ever fixed by Sony, but at the time 'few years ago', there were a lot of similar complaints on the PSN forums.
I think one of the fixes was to increase the buffer, bur this never worked for me, so I returned it.

  • Anyone got it working with Diskstation. I've already got one… looking to set this up, just wondering if anyone here has already done this before.

  • Is this going to work for Digital TV broadcast? I thought it was for Analog broadcast only so it went this cheap.

    • It's for digital.

      • Thank you. I bought one long time ago and never use it. I thought it was for analog broadcast only.

        Cheers,

  • These work great with a rpi and openelec. I used one until it blew up :\

Would like to buy some of these but no delivery :S

  • no add to cart button anymore :(

  • +1

anyone going to bendigo? can you grab me one?

    • Possibly… have messaged ya

  • Great deal. Cheers OP.

  • Anyone managed to get this working with Windows? The link to the driver is dead.

  • I wonder how much cpu is needed to run one of these things. Would an Atom do it? Maybe a dual core Atom? I have several machines to choose from.

    • +1

I run it on a raspberry pi B+ running at 700mhz (single core ARM) with TVHeadEnd and it can stream 2 channels over my network in 1080i without issues. The Pi and sony tuuner use <10W together, so it's a great little headless solution :)

    • +1

From my understanding the digital stream is pretty much just chucked on the disk with no decoding required so CPU requirement is pretty minimal. I don't know specifically about your Atom.

  • Anyone in Melbourne buy this for Windows/Linux and not need the PS3 disc? I lost my disc a while back and haven't been able to use the TV tuner since replacing my dead PS3

    • Are you still looking? I have one

  • Just received mine. Box is crushed and it has obviously been used there is dirt on the bottom/feet and slight marks. Annoying

  • this is the reply from hn online chat when asked why I can't add this item to cart

Unfortunately that item has been disabled from the website due to stock limitations and prevents us for over selling; it will be removed from website soon, sorry for the inconvenience.

    • +1

That's probably my fault - I snapped up all the remaining stock nationwide a week and a bit ago, a grand total of 16 units. I've got a bunch of MythTV servers to build for family, and the PlayTV is perfect, especially when you multiplex channels (eg: record up to eight channels at once from two networks simultaneously with the one PlayTV unit).

      So, sorry about that. =)

And I couldn't order them off the website either. I rang one store, had them look up stock nationwide, then contacted each of those stores with stock directly to arrange delivery at about $15-$20 per store (they would not do a store transfer). Paid over the phone and delivered within a couple of days from NSW and VIC who were the only places left with any stock at the time.

@Mikinoz - Shipping condition for me was excellent - nicely wrapped and boxed.

      • Dang most people would be mad at your order size but all the work you did was impressive!
So how well does this work on win7? should I pick up a second hand unit somewhere?

        • +1

It's a top tuner - yes, absolutely get hold of one for use in Windows as well. As long as you have a working driver, WMC et-al should use it right away and see two physical tuners (unfortunately no software I'm aware of on Windows will utilise multiplexing, so you'll only be able to watch/record up to two channels from two networks simultaneously per tuner - the PS3 software is the same).

In the case of Linux, it has Kernel support already, so literally plug and play. The PlayTV uses the same chipset as the once awesome Asus U3100 MyCinema USB tuner before it was discontinued.

        • @HyRax1:

Cool I'll have to look into all that then thanks!
