what's the normal price , jv would usually ask

    • +1

Yeah but he usually gets 40 downvotes for it.

      ¿ǝɔᴉɹd lɐɯɹou ǝɥʇ s,ʇɐɥʍ

      • +6

Upside down jv is filling the void left by downside up regular jv :)

+1 on this deal for decent resolution. Very rare today (frustratingly so)

  • The W230SD without the QHD+ Display is currently $1489.00.

    • How come the standard 1080p cost more than QHD+?

      • +1

The W230SD is the newer chassis (9 series nVidia GPU). This is the older chassis, we have these at a Special Promo Price.

  • How do the games look when scaled at 1080p?
Any web browsers scale websites properly yet?

    • +1

Windows 8.1 scaling is a lot better then with Windows 7. There are still some things that just don't work perfectly. Have just been testing with Windows 10 and it's much better, there are still some legacy programs etc. that will likely never work well.

      • +1

Scaling on Windows 8.1 is attrocious. It might be better than W7, but you still get funny sized fonts, windows and menu bars that sometimes wont show properly unless you scale it back to 100% DPI instead of 200% or 150%. I've got a 4K Toshiba 15" and scaling is crucial if you want to keep your eyesight for more than a year. Hopefully W10 will support better scaling for 4K and above monitors properly.

      • +1

There are still some things that just don't work perfectly.

The programs that scale 100% properly tend to be the exception, not the rule.

I agree with bchliu, 13.3"/13" panels and the 3200x1800 resolution just do not mix and that is one of the reasons I stopped using the Dell XPS 13 with the 3200 x 1800 QHD screen. Running in non-native resolutions also looks equally terrible.

    • +3

Ok I have one of these laptops from elsewhere (The Horize variety) and if your running the screen at 1080p there are no issues with scaling at all. If you decide to run at the native resolution of 3200x1800 you will need to use scaling and there will be issues with certain applications. Primarily I have found that anything Java based (Including IDEs if you are a developer) and the Adobe Software are the biggest culprits for not scaling at all. Without scaling enabled at this resolution the text is tiny and very hard to read.

Not an issue for web browsing and most applications but could crop up in Adobe products and games with the UI

  • Is the keyboard the same type as the W550EU?

    • Hi Calcium,

The unit has a backlit keyboard with the chiclet island style layout. It has the Full-size return key. I believe this is similar to the W550EU, the key spacing feels a little further apart compared the W550, I find it more comfortable.

      • OK Thanks. I have the w550eu and I really dont like the keyboard. Great machine otherwise.

        • 1+ only real gripe about my w550eu.

    • +2

I've also got a W230SS — great machine but the keyboard and trackpad are terrible (comparing to my ThinkPads :) The trackpad is even worse than my $250 Chromebook. I have to use mine with external keyboard & mouse on all the time.

      • Could be broken, my trackpad was broken and had to be repaired. Seemed to be a fairly common fault.

        Now it is alright.

  • +1

Looks like a good price for the hardware included. At 2kg though it's a bit heavy in my opinion.

Just wish Clevo would release a 14 inch unit to compete with the Gigabyte P34W v3.

  • +2

Good specs for the price, but I've never heard of the brand and I'm not sure if I can expect them to still be around in 3 years.

    • +1

      Hey Lostn,

Thanks for the comment. We hope to be around for a lot longer then that! We've been trading for about 5 years now and aren't looking to slow down. It's unfortunate what has happened with the closing of LBO. Happy to answer any questions you might have however.

      • +1

I didn't mean to be blunt but everyone says they plan to be around a long time. It's not always the case though. I worry about support if you guys don't stick around.

In any case, I'm curious to know why such a high resolution for a gaming notebook? There's no chance the hardware inside will be able to handle games at that resolution, and you're going to end up running them in lower than native resolution, which is never nice looking on LCDs.

        • No worries. The resolution on the screen is definitely not one you'll be likely to play games in. It works great however for normal use in windows however. The display at 1080P has no issues with scaling so it is also happy to run at more realistic gaming resolutions.

        • @fraglabs:

Wouldn't it be better to put games in 1600x900 resolution as it's exactly a factor of 2 instead of 1920x1080?

        • @CVonC: Definitely, runs happily at 1600 x 900 as well and lets the mobile GPU off the hook a little bit more!

        R.I.P Logical Blue One

        • Sad news.
I've heard of Logical Blue but never used them, I only try new suppliers if I have service/warranty issues with my current one, and occasionally I'll leave my comfort zone for an exceptional price on something I need.

    • +5

      lol this guy
      edit: wait LBO is gone!?

    • but I've never heard of the brand

      I remember owning a clevo > 10 years ago

      • I realised afterwards that he was referring to the reseller

  • I have the version prior to this (14") and it gets on average about 10 hours of use every day. Only issue has been a minor BIOS issue that makes the nVidia card useless sometimes. I'll be buying another Clevo after it dies - so good to have everything on one machine

  • Hi Rep,
Can you price this or similar config without the graphics card, which is useless for me?

    • +1

      Sorry Gunny,

GPU is part of the Motherboard with these. Unfortunately can't be changed.

  • Hi Rep,

Is there an option to change the screen from gloss to matte? or upgrade the Wifi to Killer Wireless N1202.

    Thanks

    • Hi Ale-x,

Only the Gloss screens for this one. Can add the option for the Killer Wireless N1202 Upgrade. Will get it added to the options list now!

      • Thanks Rep

    • +1

If you're going to get the Killer Wireless, then my advice (as an owner of one) is to install the drivers without the driver software. One of the software components (most likely the bandwidth manager) causes blue screens with high network usage for many people.

Really, when I got my custom laptop I wished I'd just gotten an Intel wifi card instead. Killer is nothing special IMO and wasn't worth the hassle for me.

    • Easy to make your screen have a matte finish anyway. Guides online, but if you want the easy route, just go for a matte film screen protector.

  • Any clearances on bigger gaming laptops? 17" or bigger?

    Not that size matters :)

    • Only these for now sorry!

  • +1

    Touch screen option?

    • +1

      Sorry diddy50,

      No Touch option.

  • +6

Not interested, but good work on the FragLabs rep for replying to everyone's questions.

    • +1

      Thanks for the feedback corbz!

  • These laptops are pretty value for money, great deal on top of that!

  • +4

    • +9

      • How about desert ?

        • +5

          $1 Frozen Coke :)

  • Hi rep, is there any chance you could do a deal on the P650SE?

    • +1

Hey mickey. Send me an email through the contact form via the website and I'll see what we can do. Just mention that you'd spoken to me on OzBargain.

  • Anyone know where I can get the latest firmware for this laptop ?
Got mine from LBO but they're gone and Clevo only give their firmware to resellers.

  • damnn if only i hadent bought the mac book air from futu online for 1075..

    • +1

    • Comparing apples with oranges clevos.

  • Hey OP, whats the physical dimensions and also the weight?

Might be a factor for those considering to buy.

    Thanks!

    • Those would definitely help!

      Weight: ~2.1KG
      Dimensions(H, W, D) : 32mm x 330mm x 227mm

      Have added to the post!

      Cheers

  • any deals on the 15"? the p15fv3 looks good but a bit over my budget

    • Hey teehee,

If you want to jump on and send me an email through the contact from. I'll be sure to follow up and see if we can do something ;)

      • Email sent!

  • I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger. Is there any chance we can get it without the SSD? I've got a few drives lying around already that I've been trying to find uses for.

    • And is it one stick of 8 GB, or 2 x 4GB?

      • Hey Kealii,

Sorry had a slow start this morning. I'll add the option for None for HDD's. Memory Config is 1x8.

        Cheers

        • Thanks! Checking with the missus now.
I saw that it doesn't ship until August 19, how long do you reckon it will take to get to me in Sydney? I'm going overseas so wanted it before.

        • @kealii: Hey mate,

If you could send me a message on the contact form I'll follow up and be able to give you a more accurate ETA.

        • Sent!

  • Went to your site to have a look at desktops but there were none?

    • Hey venomx2,

They are in the process of being re-spec'd. If you want to send us an email via the contact form would be more then happy to follow up and assist with a config & specification.

  • +2

I don't need a new high end laptop but +1 for the excellent specs considering the low $AUD. A 15.6" screen would've better housed the high resolution screen though.

  • whats the max RAM for this laptop?
