I think Honey Murcott Mandarins are $2 per 1kg at Coles.

    • +8

This variety is called Afourer mandarin which is low to very low seeded.
Murcotts are full of seeds so kids don't like them.
They are also being picked fully ripe from the southern growing region which gives the fruit more flavour due to our growing conditions.

      • +4

Bought some lovely juicy tangy Murcotts which had "Low Seed" on the label for $1.49/kg from Bel Fresco a few days ago.

They only had 1 or 2 seeds each.

      • +2

I bought about 2kg of Afourer mandarins a couple of weeks ago at 50 cents per kilo. They were incredible.

Ate them in two days. Oink.

  • +28

This is for premium quality fruit.
The fruit is only picked to order the day prior to posting direct to your door from our family orchard in the Riverland.
If you've never tasted properly fresh ripe citrus and only ever eaten store purchased fruit you'll see a notice difference in eating quality by getting fruit that has been picked properly ripe (not a bit green to make it last on the shelves) and properly fresh (not a few weeks to a few months old like store fruit).
Also your money is being spent with the growers (my family) and not a supermarket chain.

    • +14

It actually is a decent price for fantastic quality produce delivered, but unfortunately OzBargain is an unforgiving wasteland. If it's not the cheapest, forget about it.

      • I agree we're a harsh lot sometimes, but 'unforgiving wasteland'? Toughen up princess; Why have you been a member with 1000+ comments if the place is a wasteland?

        • +1

Lol probably wrong choice of words

        • +4

because just like in mad max wastelands might have alot of bloodsuckers but there are also few good characters.

    • agree, I have try the mandarin picking at hawkesbury river, the taste is fantastic

    • +1

As long as you don't spend our money at the supermarket chain.

    • +3

I order one, my wife is in her third trimester and having a mandarin-crave quite often. It is true what you wrote and I do agree with it. Plus mandarin skin is excellence in my tea pot, it's a 3 x win + the baby's win :D

  • -1

    ripest fruit available

Sounds to me like 10kg worth of fruit that is at the point of being overripe. Got no way of telling until it's at your door… No thanks, not at $3.50 per kg.

    • +9

It's far from over ripe, this variety "Afourer" hangs well on the tree until late October and so will taste great for the next few months. They also have very good skins both strong while being easy to peel so they keep really well.
I'm not trying to pull anyones leg here, we've been doing this online selling of our citrus for 5+ years and our customers love it.
I'm just letting you know today you can get what people normally pay $52 for for $35.

      • -4

The same variety that i paid $2 a kg for at my local Coles yesterday?
Even at $35 it is NOT a bargain.

        • +4

As I have said the bargain is that people normally pay $52 for this same fruit.
Its a premium product to what you find in the shop.

        • +4

Not saying it's a bargain, but you can't compare apples with oranges.

        • +2

          @RedTyson1:

True. I am comparing the same type of mandarins.

        • +1

          @tlarnold:

And that doesn't make it a true bargain. If I normally sell iPads for $1500, and I discount them to $1000 while everyone else sells them at $650… Would you buy the iPad from me or would you go where you get it cheapest?
This is a discount of your normal price, it's not a bargain.

        • +12

@Martijn: Just a little pun, but the point being that they are still not the same product. If you have previously tried these and can attest to them being the same quality as Coles, then fair enough - no bargain. However I don't believe you have grounds to comment on the value if you have not tried them or have not received feedback from anyone who has. I will personally give them a go before passing judgement.

        • +1

          @tlarnold:

I'm a regular ozbargainer and a regular farmhouse direct buyer and I can tell you that you're wasting your breath as most people here are quite happy to chomp down on imported Chinese produce provided it is cheap. Personally, I wouldn't feed it to my dogs.

        • @RedTyson1:

And even if Coles just happened to have the same quality this time, it would have been different next time. I don't even waste my time test tasting fruit in Coles now. Local fruit & vege shop cheaper anyway.

        • +4

@Martijn: you can't use that comparison.

It's more like saying one android tablet is made by a no name brand for $89 from coles and the other a google nexus from JB for $249.

Sure Both are android and run android 4.4 or what ever. But one is much better build quality, the OS is so much better and has no bloat ware. The other works fine as a tablet, but is quite ordinary.

Unless you eat it you and say it's not a bargain. This is a bargain.

        • @Martijn: your logic is like this :
Grilled burgers are reduced to $8 from $12 but it's not a bragian coz maccas sell for $2

Both are different quality ,so u can't use the iPad comparison

I've tried fresh picked produce before and they are amazing …

        • @kamban: h

I like that example. Particularly cause it illustrates that after the so called bargain price, it's still overpriced for a "premium" product.

        • People have different value on premium products. Some will pay for the higher quality, some will just pick the cheapest because they think they're not worth the extra cost. This sort of debate will never end.

        • I can't knock the deal because I grew up on a farm for a bit, and I know there is a difference.
Even if the difference is only in my mind..

It's good to know some farmers are finding ways to get a better deal than the pennies the oligarchs throw their way.
Support them now before international conglomerates own everything (they now own my family farm.. it's a huge culture shift).

  • +3

Also this special is running across our entire range, not just our mandarins.
So you can buy Blood oranges, Tangelos & Lemons all at the same price which is probably lower than you'd find in most shops for those varieties.

    • So 10kg of locally grown (SA) Tangelos for $35 delivered tlarnold?

      • +1

        Yes that's right.

  • +9

Hi rep, will you consider a mixed 10kg box of mandarins, oranges and lemons considering they're same price ?

    • +2

Yeah good suggestion levent. Even 5+5 split of two varieties would be great.

    • +3

take a look here for a mixed box, same price http://www.farmhousedirect.com.au/freshcitrusdirect/growers-…

    • +14

      Yep we can do that.
If you select the growers selection mix then at checkout in the "notes to producer" section let us know how you'd like your mix made up.
      or
In your case we actually have a product with that mix called "Mix 2"
It's listed on the second page of our products

      • +1

If you can confirm you can do 5kg Tangelo, 3Kg Mandarine, 2kg Lemon for $35 delivered, im in.

        • +12

Yep thats no worries, put it through as a growers selection mix and add a note in the notes to producer and it'll just charge you the $35.

        • +2

          @tlarnold: Order processed #20150809310039 Cheers.

        • +5

@tlarnold: I ordered a box of lemons and juicing oranges from here before. The quality is exceptional and it's all spray free, thanks!

      • +1

Thanks Op, great price for farm fresh delivered. Happy to support local producers.

        Order No: 20150809900201

  • +16

Up the street a neighbour has a lemon tree that drops fruit that conveniently rolls down the hill. The smell of a lemon straight off the tree is unbelievable compared with the no smell of supermarket varieties.

    • +2

Those lemon stealing whores must be happy!

  • +1

Lol, always exclude Tas/WA/NT. We are not in Australia

    • +1

They're the freak states or territories, like America's Alaska and Hawaii.

But thanks to the West Australians who contribute so much in mining royalties to the rest of us.

      • Thanks to West Australians, we have Julie Bishop and most of Australia's Liebral voters.

  • +19

I'm glad this deal got vote up. Sometimes on Ozbargain, I think we forget everything has its price and a premium product @ at discounted price is still a bargain.

  • +5

    Just ordered, Thanks

  • just ordered.

If this gets ozbargained, I hope you have enough staff members to get the orders out before the fruit turns

  • +1

ordered. Will hoping o get sweet mandarins…:)

  • +1

    Thanks, ordered some!

  • +30

Does anyone else want to high-five the grower?
I mean, he's doing a good job of handling criticism about what is effectively his livelihood. He's also found a way to make a go of it in an industry where the supermarkets hold all the power.

    • +9

      Cheers mate appreciate the support.
A big part of peoples negativity is just due to lack of understanding of the food chain and production systems. One of the great things about dealing direct with our customers is being able to educate and converse with them on why things are the way they are with their food and this website is helping with that.

  • ordered thanks :)

  • +16

Thanks for posting this. It might not be a "bargain" to some, but neither is driving our primary producers out of existence by re-enforcing the Coles/Woolworths stranglehold on the market. I for one am glad to be able to directly support the farmer, and love the fact that I am buying direct. Purchased - Thanks!

  • Can all of your produce (grapefruit, tangelos etc) be included in the Growers Selection Box?

    • +1

Yep if you like. When placing an order add a note to producer what you'd like in your box and we'll make it up as you've asked.

  • -7

Not sure why everyone thinks this is a bargain, Afourer mandarin is currently at my local coles(springvale) for 2.9$ a KG.

    • +1

      See wolffram's comment above bud.

  • +4

Fresh juicy produce straight from the tree delivered to my home versus produce sitting in cold storage barn for over a year that lacks taste. I know which one I prefer and have just ordered some direct from S.A. Even at $3.50 a kilo it is still a bargain to me, and the profits go direct to the farmer!

  • +1

    Nice Deal
Just ordered 4kg Tangelo, 4Kg Mandarine, 2kg Lemon in Growers Selection Box

  • Thanks op.

  • +2

I've bought 2 10kg lots of the cara oranges over the last month and can say they are far superior to the supermarket fruit. Just ordered 10kg of blood oranges which my local supermarket never stocks. Great price.

    • I just got a box of blood oranges and mandarins. Shame the cara oranges are out. I've never tried them before.
Are they much different to Navel oranges?

      • +1

The caras have more of a pink or reddish flesh and they are delicious. Heaps of juice in them.

      • +1

The bloods are a Valencia type orange and so have seeds where the Cara Cara's are a navel which are completely seedless. Also bloods show some colour on the skins where as Cara Cara's do not. Unfortunately there are no early and late Cara Cara varieties yet… so the season for them is relatively short.

  • +7

mandarines are my favourite fruit so I considered myself a bit of an expert in this area, I thought I knew the good ones. One day at work someone bought in mandarins fresh off their tree and it rocked my world. In no way can cold store supermarket mandarins be compared to fresh. This deal might not be a bargain to some, but when you consider the cost of organic fruit (as an example of a premium fruit service) then this deal sits right there and I will be taking it up. Honestly, if youve never tried fresh off the tree give it a go - the fruit really is superior.

  • How long do they stay fresh for?

  • +1

Thankyou, I just ordered a 5kg box of oranges and mandarins. I am more than happy to support farmers directly and not the supermarkets.

  • +10

I am a bit torn about this. I too value high quality produce and believe it is worth a premium. And I am sad about how hard it has become to get top notch fruit and veggies, thanks to the duopoloy of supermarkets.

As an OzBargainer I am however conscious of prices too. And as such this does not qualify as a bargain. It is advertising for a product, nothing more.

Basically, by cutting out the middleman, the cost to the consumer should be lower while still allowing the farmer to make a higher profit. A price of around $1.50/kg would achieve such a win-win situation.

This is not the case here, the only winner is the farmer. Instead of selling their fruit for 30 cents/kg to a supermarket chain they get $3.50/kg for it. The consumer pays the same or even more than at a supermarket. A very one-sided proposition.

I understand that the product, at the time it arrives, will be fresher and better. But that is immediately negated by the fact that one has to purchase 10kg at a time. By the time I would get to the last of them, it would have been stored much longer than it takes a supermarket to bring something from a farm to their shelf.

Fortunately here in WA there is the Spudshed. That is as close as one can get to cutting out the middleman without compromising on the convenience of being able to shop the quantity one needs at the time one wants it. Just for reference: Oranges were 49 cents/kg there last week. Mandarins 99 cents/kg the week before that. Now that's what I call a bargain.

    • This is not the case here, the only winner is the farmer. Instead of selling their fruit for 30 cents/kg to a supermarket chain they get $3.50/kg for it.

Don't forget to factor in shipping charges for a 10kg box. The farmer still has to pay couriers to ship each box to a customer.

      • +1

Nah bro, Aus Post has sponsored them - they get free shipping!

      • They sure have to. And they usually charge accordingly: $17 it would seem, since they claim that is what their free shipping promotion saves.

Basically what I am saying: their regular price should be around $1.50/kg plus shipping. A promotion that is worthy of my '+' vote on OzBargain would have to be better than that.

    • +3

A different way to look at this is say our fruit is a bottle of premium wine priced at say $52/bottle
Today we are selling our premium wine at $35/bottle giving buyers a saving of $17/bottle.
Now you could say this is not a bargain because you can buy a of generic supermarket label wine for $6.
I'd say well if you like to drink that cheap wine go for it but if you'd like a premium wine much cheaper than normal enjoy the bargain.

As mentioned earlier our fruit is a premium product.
Its not meant to compete with supermarket prices, heck nothing can compete with supermarket prices.
So if you'd like to try some high quality fruit at a reasonable price instead of a more premium price than have a go at this deal.

Also as mentioned earlier our prices are the same across all products (excepting the lower grade juicing oranges).
So you can buy Lemons, Tangelos & Blood oranges at this same price which is probably on par if not better than most shops while providing a far fresher and generally riper product.

    • Team Teris post is spot on.

  • Good combo with mandarin.

  • I haven't tried any fruit fresh off the tree and so I give it a go. Ordered the growers selection mix. Thanks.

  • 10kg Mandrin Box

Hi Rep, you may need to correct the above to Mandarin

    • +2

As long as they're good farmers, I overlook spelling and marketing.

  • Can you do a mixed 5kg box please?

I have a navel orange and a lemon tree in the back yard and only want mandarins 3kg and 2kg blood oranges.

    I know I'm picky.haha

    • +1

Yep just pick a 5kg mix 1 and in the "notes to producer" at check out leave a note with what you'd like in your box.

  • +3

Ordered oranges, tangelos and blood oranges. We grow our own lemons and limes in the backyard, but always happy to support Aussie growers. Well done OP for running the OzBargain gauntlet and coming out on top :)

  • Thank you, have ordered, looking forward to a 10kg taste test!

  • Can anyone who ordered from OP's last deal let us know on the quality of the fruit?

    • There is at least one review in the thread.

    • Bought a box of mandarins during their last deal, they were great.

  • how long do they keep for?

    • See earlier post with a link to a blog I wrote on the topic.

      • thanks.. just ordered a grower's selection. i want to try everything

  • Do you guys have pomelos?

    • No sorry we don't have any Pomelos.

  • Hi OP,

I want to know for the Growers Selection Box does it come with 15KG? Because I want:

    10kg Tangelo, 4Kg Mandarine, 1kg Lemon

Or can I select the Mix 2 15KG Fresh Citrus and add notes to the note and select what I wanted for price of $45 delivered?

    Thx

    • Yeah just select a 15kg mix and add a note in the notes to producer section during checkout with what you'd like.

      • Thanks OP.

        Just ordered 15KG Mix 2.

  • Gday tlarnold,

I've placed an order 20150809730214 and successfully paid with PayPal however it doesn't appear in my Farmhouse Direct orders. Could you please confirm that you've received the order?

    • +1

I can't see it sorry. Be a good idea to check your bank/paypal accounts to see if the money has come out.
