Each to their own. I think this a pretty good price for a mid range phone with a full hd display, Snapdragon 615, 2gb ram and a nice design with some free accessories thrown in.

  • +3

16 GB Storage and no expansion slot.

  • Doesnt look like it has a headphone socket either

    • Yep no headphone socket. Has Bluetooth connection though.

    • It's suppose to come with some sort of micro-usb to 3.5mm jack adapter. But then since you're getting O-Music with it, you do get your socket in a way.

    • still can't believe these are the same folks as Oppo Digital (who make some super high-end audio/visual equipment)

I see on wiki that they are run totally independently though.

For Oppo to not get the audio right… omg…

  • get an r7 instead

    • +1

The r5 is aimed at budget conscious consumers whilst the r7 is the more expensive flagship. It depends on how much you want to spend on a phone :)

      • +2

$707 RRP for a budget phone?

        • $599 is the RRP for the phone and $108 for the accessories

        • I agree, even at $599, that is an extraordinary price. Like all the other budget Chinese manufacturers, they're not exactly a long-term, proven supplier of handsets. That might come in a few more years, but right now that is a laughable rrp. I'm on my 3rd Chinaphone, love them for the price, but if you want me to pay $600+ for a phone it will be a Samsung or similar.

  • R5 R7 same level in market , both equip with snapdragon 615 and 2 or 3G as ram is the difference

    BTW oppo = one plus

    • R5 screen size is bigger, no SD card slot, smaller a battery. Quite a few differences.

      R7

Iam personally looking at the R7, because i dont want a screen size bigger than 5" and its something to replace my original Xperia Z which i LOVE!!!!

      • if i were you, i will go look at xperia M4 or wait for M5 or C5 ultra

      • Xperia Z is still a great phone! It runs so smoothly on 4.4, wish Vodafone would update it to 5 though.

        • Mine runs Helstra and we just got 5.0 about a month ago.

Only other flagship i would look at is the Z3 Compact, but the screen is just that little bit too small.

        • +1

@XCelR8: yeah I was looking at the z3 compact for awhile. Sony makes such good phones, it's such a shame they aren't selling well. Waterproofing and a dedicated camera button are such good ideas and their android skin is so light.

        • +1

          @ShamelessBargains:
Agreed, still looking at them, just seeing if the Z5 goes back to 5" or the Z5 Compact increases to 4.8. We shall see (hopefully by the end of September)

        • +1

@XCelR8: z5 compact will be perfect I reckon. z3 compact will drop in price making for a hard decision… z3+/z4 is near perfection so I doubt they will change it much :)

      BTW oppo = one plus

    2000mah battery? meh
    For $319 I'd pay a tiny bit more and get LG G flex/LG G3/Asus Zenfone 2.

    • Not tiny. its almost $50+.

      • +1

It's also a big jump in terms of specs. Don't get me wrong, this phone is pretty good looking and thin, but it's just not really that cheap.
If you're already spending $300+ you might as well get something better in the $300-$400 range, I'm not suggesting spending $700+ for an S6 or iphone or whatever.

        • Yeah $350 is great buying for a G Flex 2 atm but it's grey stock, no tax return, no accessories and is a much larger phone.

        • +1

@ShamelessBargains:LG Flex pro's over this phone, better cpu (by a mile), 1000mah more battery, 32gig with mSD slot vs 16gig no expansion and DSE isn't exactly exemplary at after sales support or even during sales supprort. Pro's for Oppo - Thin and 0.9cm shorter than the LG. Food for thought :)

        • @scud70: yeah really depends on what you are looking for in a phone too. Portability, affordability, Australian warranty vs Better specs and a bigger size.

        • @ShamelessBargains: actually i stand corrected apart from thickness … its nearly exact same size :) 149.1 x 75.3 x 7.1-9.4 mm lg flex 2 vs Oppo 148.9 X 74.5 X 4.85mm; 155g (few grams difference in weight) … so really just the thinness and "aus stock" (i say that because Oppo is a chinaDroid phone so not sure of their support presence here in Aus).

i agree though unless there's a huge discount (like the current kogan 20% off phones) i would go Aussie stock all the way.

        • @scud70: Yeah I didn't realise they were both so close in weight and dimensions!

        • @scud70: where did you find a g flex 2 with 32gb for $350ish? Link please.

        • @mrmagoober: where have you been the last 2 days? hehehehe part of the ebay 20% off sale. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208321

        • @scud70: Sorry I actually saw that one, but I'm not sure as I haven't seen a 32gb version with 2gb ram, only a 16 gb version with 2gb ram and a 32gb version with 3gb ram.

        • +1

@mrmagoober: t-dimensions had the flex on sale for 400 earlier, about a week or so ago and there was a user that owned the same model and confirmed it was 2gig ram and 32gig … but your correct online most list it with 3gig Ram .. bit of confusion out there.

Oppo phones are terrible. Having heard about how great the high end Oppo phones are, i was left terribly disappointed when i had the opportunity to use one for a awhile. So bad in fact, that i put it pack in its box and it never saw the light of day again.

Low brightness (could be caused by the factory screen protector it comes with). Ugly android skin. Poor build quality.

    • +1

Which model did you have? I have only heard and read good things about their build quality and operating system.

      • I was using the Find 7

  • mmm… the lenovo k3 note or soon to be widely available xiaomi redmi note 2 is cheaper and better in most ways if you don't mind the larger size, imo.

  • This brand will not survive in the Australian market. Will go the same way as those crappy Chinese car brands (Chery etc)
    There's a reason most carriers/retailers aren't stocking these phones.

    • +2

Calling it "junk" definitely showed your opinion.

Having more competitors is great in the market as it brings the price down. The reason most carriers aren't stocking these phones is because Dick smith, MobileCiti and Optus have exclusive contracts.

    • People like mattlol are why over priced rubbish like Samsung are so popular in Australia.

It's not the 90s any more. China is the new Japan for electronics.

      • +2

China is the new Japan for electronics.

Not true, China's quality is in no way like Japanese electronics, not even Japanese quality in the 90s. I'd say more like Korea or Taiwan in the 90s.
Even Chinese people I know tend to not buy anything Chinese, saying they're the new Japan is way too early, maybe another 20 years.

        • -1

I mean in the 90s China made electronics were considered rubbish, just like Japanese electronics were consider rubbish in the 80s.

Now China is very quickly catching up.

Next stop, cars. Currently I wouldn't touch a Chinese car. But give it 10-15 years and they'll be surpassing the rubbish Korean Kias and Hyundai and on par with the Japanese.

        • +1

          @PainToad:
Sure, just remember the rest of the world progress as well, so by the time Chinese cars get to Korean standards, Korean cars will probably be up to current Japanese standards, and Japanese cars will get up to German standards.
Interesting and fascinating development really ;)

        • @clse945111:
From what I've seen from Samsung, Hyundai etc. the Koreans aren't progressing at all (from an innovation perspective, sales certainly aren't a problem). Just my opinion.

    • +1

The insinuation that major retailers are only stocking products that are "quality" is a bit naive, I'm reasonably confident if they believed a pile of proverbial would sell for big $$'s then they would sell it and tell you it is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Fringe (in australia) manufacturers are not sold in Australia because it is such a small market and providing support and compliance is potentially to difficult/not worth it.

Not defending this particular phone so much as pointing out the inherent flaw in the premise.

  • Hmm probably should have got this over the Flex 2?

    • Isn't the 16GB only bothering you o.0

    • nope :)

      • I'm actually thinking of buying this for my wife , she uses a 16 GB phone and uses an iPod Nano to store songs , so wondering if she will prefer to continue that way , if only there was a 32GB version this conundrum will be gone . .

        • is she a heavy user (i.e. facebook, whatsapp etc)? .. there's a reason the phone comes with a powerbank at 2000mah i doubt it can go a full day without a recharge along the way, at this price i would look at another phone .. not saying just the flex but that's currently good value for money. Earlier in the comments i outlined some of the pro's of the flex vs this phone. IMHO its not a great buy specially because of the battery, 16gig - OS overhead then apps then pictures and videos and no way of increasing it apart from cloud storage and good management :)

        • @scud70: She is big on whatsapp , receiving photos of her nieces and hoards them like treasure , but is not a heavy user at all , that is why I'm wondering if the 16 Gig will hold enough in the future , though the hardware is good enough for her …

One more thing is I have a 7.5% off voucher with Dick Smith that will bring this down to $300 (post coles offer ) , so I'm a little bit intrigued

        • @kamban: still not a fan even with that discount .. lol that battery is very scary in an android phone .. def look up some reviews "on the line" (sorry for the stupid The Internship quote..lol)

        • @scud70: That battery is a huge worry , I accept …

        • @kamban: TA just posted this .. :) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208872 might be worth considring if your ok with 16gig

  • Also the DS site does not mention about the accessories at all , are you sure those are included …

    • Yep was in an advertisement in the courier mail today.

  • Sorry for the barrage of comments , but a newer and better model is being sold for a cheaper price (USD220 ) in the US and should make its way down under soon based on this price reduction

    http://androidcommunity.com/super-slim-oppo-r5s-now-shipping…

    • The only diff is that the s model is 3 gigs ram and 32 gigs ROM instead of the R5 at 2 gigs ram and 16 gigs ROM.
Although the special US$220 is stated we know in Australia you will never find it at that price and it is about $330 here with our currency fallen to new lows.

  • how does the coles offer work? I couldn't find any details on the ozbargain post linked. And I don't see Dick Smith gift cards sold at coles?

    • That's expired I think. It is not a permanent thing.

      • so the price should really be the $349 price rather than $319 as that is not really available.

    • You pay $100 and receive a $110 dick smith gift card. Repeat this process 3 times and you have saved $30 bringing the price down to $319. Your local Coles might not have any stock but this deal was in their latest catalogue.

  • members have forgotten the Oppo R series have one killer feature: The VOOC charger is unlike anything you've seen from 0 to 100% as soon as you finish showering when you put it on charge before entering the bathroom. Time saved in charging is valuable. Time is money. No bargain for that. SuperAMOLED screen in Full HD not just some cheap IPS.

    • Time is money.

Don't know about you, but I'm not missing out on money while my phone charges while I sleep. So no, time isn't money.

      • There will be occasions where you need to charge it quickly whilst not sleeping and this is when VOOC charging will simply amaze I charged from 30% to 100% on my R7 after just 2 songs on "The voice" on channel 9 No other samsung model can claim that neither can any iphones.

        • Wow that's super impressive. How are you liking the R7? Would be nice to here from someone who owns an Oppo :)

  • Wait… is this the same brand as the legendary high-end blu-ray player manufacturer ?

    edit… OMG, it is…

Not sure if my opinion of the blu-ray player just sunk to the floor, or if these phones need a serious look???

  • once upon a time, Nokia made rubber sole boots and toilet paper.

For Finns, Nokia was a brand familiar from black rubber boots with an unusually clever heel design and the new triple-layered Nokia toilet paper that gave you that luxurious wiping experience.

    source http://bgr.com/2013/09/03/nokia-history-analysis-microsoft-a…

    • Gotta give it to Nokia, they know how to diversify!

  • Recently got the r7 from dick smith. Awesome phone. Beautifully made. Smooth os. I recomend it. Better than my g3 which is laggy.

    • Good to here some positive feedback. What made you chose an oppo over other brands?
