    Awesome deal.
Goa return under $500. Great Deal.

    • what dates did you book out of interest?

I was searching for late October flights but there were none

      • +3

Were you searching late October 2016?

Travel is for 01/03/16 to 29/10/16

    • Oh, I heard they didn't have return tickets.

  • I bought a couple of flights Bangkok to Buri Ram approx 50 baht each way = $5 return plus booking fee. (I might or might not go, but a cheap option for a side trip later on) Pretty damned good! Also I saw Kuala Lumpur to Syd approx $107

  • Any deals to Japan?

  • -1

I'm only getting special prices TO Aust, not from.

    • +1

You've got to choose where your flight departs from near the top.

      • Tried that, Sydney wasn't an option

        • That's weird. Works for me.

  • Thanks TA!!

  • +4

Serious, what do YOU do on Malaysia?

Last time I went,I only enjoyed Penang…. But not by very much. I essentially didn't really enjoy it, mainly because of the racism.

The found out that the Chinese Malay are institutionally discriminated against (mainly because they… well, do too well in Malaysia), and I guess I was mistaken to be Chinese… leading to in your face preferential treatment to non Asians (Caucasians) in resorts.

    • +17

      You eat, eat and eat.

      • +3

        You shop, shop and shop.

        • KL is the new Hong Kong for shopping.

    • +3

Borneo is great too, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Sarawak (probably, I didn't go there).

      • +5

I'm from Kota Kinabalu and would of course recommend this place if what you like to do is relaxing on the beaches at the different islands (avoid the beaches around the city at all costs though), and you can get a PADI diving course there, if you're lucky you get to see sea turtles. Food is great there too just have a look at this website for suggestions http://www.eatbah.com/

      • Im from sarawak.:) Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban

        • Yo fellow Sarawakian!

    • +1

Perhentian Islands for beach, snorkeling and scuba.

      And eat, eat eat…

      • +2

Yeah that's where I realised, "holy shit this place IS racist, as the Chinese have told me…"

Nice beach but the waters are too calm for me. Such a chilled beach… Soo chilled, did seem lawless.

If anyone's going there for the snorkeling, go with the International tourist group rather than the local tourist group.

        • +1 for perhentians. But it is rather sketchy, particular the backpacker (long?)island

    • +2

Inose, There's problems everywhere you go, you just have to cope with them the best you can, ignore them when you can, and try to enjoy the holiday..
I eat and eat and eat :)

      • +2

        That's obvious…

But when you're on holiday you want to go to a place to relax, and not worry about experiencing blatant racism, or racism at all. That's all I'm saying

    • +9

Depends on what YOU enjoy doing.

Like any holiday doing your own research (with input from friends/family/online stories) is probably the best thing before going there.

While I know most malaysians (or ex-pat) wouldn't disagree with your thoughts above regarding the "r" word, I'll have to say there are lots of things to do there, and lots of friendly people. Malaysia is a very diverse and big country.

      Some examples:

If you like hiking - Kota Kinabalu
      Shopping - Kuala Lumpur
Historical sites - Melacca / Penang
Kids theme parks - Sunway (KL) or Legoland (Johor)
Arguably the best street food (for food enthusiasts) in the world - PENANG! (yes i am from there!) :)
beach retreats (yes there are still that are pretty good) - Perhentian / Pangkor / etc
[I can go on - happy to provide any suggestions if need be - PM me]

Please do not let any of the local political agenda distract anyone here. It is certainly not the 'cleanest' country on this planet, but Malaysia is still a great place for a visit and from the AA fares above, a perfect stopover as well. With the drop on the OZ$, its still very attractive XE with MYR.

Back onto this deal, kudos to AA for their constant regular advance special fares.

      • +1

Langkawi is a nice island to visit and with multiple resorts you can move around.

      • +3

Please do not let any of the local political agenda distract anyone here.

Personally, I would be keeping a close watch on the political events, especially if you are not caucasian. Malaysian politicians are more talented at inflaming situations rather than calming situations down. There is potential for race riots, particularly as part of the racially divisive 16-Sept rally.

It is certainly not the 'cleanest' country on this planet, but Malaysia is still a great place for a visit

Are you looking for a prize in understatement? Prime Minister Najib Razak is linked to the murder of Shaariibuugin Altantuyaa and has responded to $700m of 'donations' in the bank by sacking investigators?

It is sad to see a country ruined by greed and corruption.

        • +1

Definitely not looking for any prizes here, just wanted to respond without skewing away from this 'bargain' deal.

I am well aware of the items you listed, and do not disagree. Should probably continue this 'Razak' and his 'donations' events on some other forum instead. :)

oh yes, speaking on all the potential 'threats' to any particular country, I highly recommend the smarttraveller gov website. One thing good is that one can subscribe to the country of your choice if there is any changes. For malaysia for instance: http://smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Malaysia

          Happy Eating and traveling people.

    • +1

I was discriminated against systematically in kl because I was a woman travelling without a penis. I despise that country!

      • +8

I was a woman travelling without a penis

Oh, what a shame. Why did you go travelling without it??

        :(

        • Maybe s/he lost in in Thailand

        • @Steptoe:

          The ladyboys must've found it.
And they ain't giving it back :(

      • +4

Always use a checklist when packing to make sure you do not forget anything. Sorry, my bad! Actually, I do not think women with penises will get treated any better. No seriously, it is bad out there. You'll really have to remember to bring your BF/husband along next time. Just don't call him by his pet name when in public.

But hey, I've been discriminated in Malaysia at times because I do not look Chinese, at times because I do not look Caucasian (depending who's discriminating), in Las Vegas because I look Mexican, in Hong Kong because I do not look Caucasian or Honk Konger. However, the ignorance of this minority will not stop me from traveling to visit these countries as they still great places to visit.

      • +2

I've copped racism in KL as well. Like water off a ducks back but I do like to make a point of spending my money right next to the racist douche just to make a point that they didn't get my money.

    • Ignore the racism and eat some great laksa. :)

    • +3

I agree. I have tried hard to have it as a holiday/stop over destination, but have given up. I hate the attitude of a lot of the non-Chinese people. And now every time I transit KL airport I am reminded of it. EG I once had strips torn off me by an arrogant security screener because I sat a small bag into a tray for the Xray rather than putting it directly onto the conveyor belt. WTF!!??

      • Oh thanks for reminding me of the service in Malaysia, including at the airport… oMG atrocious!

Racism is one thing, but the level of general service is bad enough for me to reconsider.

Some here are saying "friendly people"… Maybe if you're not Asian (I.e. a Chinese Malay looking person).

I'm just saying this based on my experience.

On a sidenote, I enjoyed Philippines waaay more. People seem to care about their jobs so try to do a good job (rather than the "I don't give a faaaa let me check my phone Facebook a bit before I serve you" attitude I got often in Malaysia).

    • are you sure it's only in Malaysia?

      • …What do you think?

        • it's happened almost in all Asian countries. even here as well, but so subtle. my friend who has chinese background had the same problem when he visited his family in usa. the question is not what, but why??

        • @brongz:

Cuz of an unhealthy dose of nationalism in my opinion.

Don't know much about South East Asia, but East Asia from my understanding, assuming that they're all assholes, goes something like this,

Japan: "Screw you guys… Anime, Sony, Toyota. History? However we want! We were victims yo, nuff said. What atrocities, you deluded, never happened… "

South Korea: "Sony? Ha! Irrelevant since the late 90s? it's all about Samsung now. K pop, our soap operas and media, dominating Asia. Highest Human Development Index what… Oh, and Sex slaves are REAL!"

China: "… I'm tired of being ignored, (profanity) y'all! At least we aren't America's lapdogs. We are relevant now! Biggest economy bitches."

Taiwan: "Hey guys… Hi, we're here too… HTC yo, remember?"

          North Korea: (data unavailable)

          … Quite sad really

    • +2

Let me guess - those countries are not to your palate? Is that you, Christina from Hotplate channel Nine?

      Melbourne is not that bad.

  • Thanks TA - given there's availability during the April school holidays there was no way I could resist this one!

    • Watch out though, I've just tried punching in some school holiday dates and the fares are at least $150 higher than fares during the school term…

  • some school holiday dates as well =)

Indonesia AirAsia X, which sells cheap flights from Melbourne and Sydney to Bali, is in danger of being grounded by Indonesian authorities next month for not meeting a regulatory requirement to have at least 10 aircraft in its fleet.

Indonesian authorities - "we're going to ground you if you don't have at least 10 aircraft in your fleet."
AA- "we bring in 1000s of tourist a week. These tourists have to stay in hotels and eat at restaurants and use transport and see the sites and go shopping and essentially inject millions of dollars into the Indonesian economy every week and keep businesses running and employee thousands of people. and you're going to shut us down? "
      Indonesian authorities - "carry on."

  • Thanks TA! booked a ticket to KL for my birthday, now just gotta find some people to come with.

    • +7

How does your taste make it more or less of a deal for others? Perhaps write something relevant and people will thank you rather than voting you down.

      • If it is regarded as an undesirable destination then any price is not a good deal. Each to their own though, I'm sure many people would love those destinations, and many wouldn't. I was just expressing a view, one that might give others who haven't been there pause to think whether they would enjoy the experience or not. No matter.

        • +1

If you could have provided some useful information as to why they were not to your taste then I am sure people would have appreciated it and not downvoted you.

        • +1

People travel to different destinations based on personal preferences. Malaysia is great for eating, shopping, island resorts and LegoLand. The country offers a diverse range of experiences from luxury resorts to jungle trekking.

Some people may not enjoy it because of the climate and/or culture. You have not indicated any reasoning behind why you dislike travelling to the country.

        • +1

          @mathew42:
It's mainly because I can't stand the extreme racism and sexism that I saw in Malaysia and India, and the way that women are held in such contempt. I can't enjoy a holiday in that environment.

        • +1

@Gershom: On those points it is hard to disagree, especially the institutionalised racism. For example, the PAS Islamic party requires MPs to divorce their wives if they change political parties.

I also find the discrimination based on perceived wealth and corruption equally challenging. For example Petronas accounts are provided only to the Prime Minister. In 2013, Petronas paid RM732 billion to the government, so the money involved is significant.

Unfortunately in the last decade the situation in Malaysia has been deteriorating and it is challenging to see a way forward.

        • @Gershom:
do you go to US or EU then? we also have racism and sexism in Australia, so would you not live here? which country will go then?
these country has their issues for sure, the ones you mentioned are true, but going there and spending money, may also help those been discriminated too, would that be a bad thing?
any way, you've been there, so you dont have to go again.

        • @Jamesx:

but going there and spending money, may also help those been discriminated too, would that be a bad thing?

I wish that's the way it worked… but we know where the money really goes.

    • Cool story bro

  • I tipped above flights Buri Ram as cheap. Any other tips for very cheap flights to interesting destinations please?? By the way, flights to southern Thailand eg Narathiwat, Hat Yai etc.are always cheap, but worth avoiding, due to bombings and other disturbances.

    • Avoid Hat Yai at all costs.

Main city in region now beset by insurgency and religious violence.

I spent a month there in 1992 when it was a nice city, and even then the station was bombed the day after I arrived, but the security situation is now much more serious.

  • +5

omg i didnt read that note about paypal and spent an extra $40 in cc fee's how very un-ozbargain of me!

  • +2

Remember Folks you can use Jetstar price beat! I just used for two on Sydney - Bali and it cost $600. Same flights on jetstar were $1000 +

    • How do you do that?

        • +3

Unfortunately for Melbourne to KL they wouldnt let me price beat it as AirAsia fly direct to KL and Jetstar do not from Melbourne.

          Gutted.

        • @OmarTheBoss: Shame Switch your trip to Bali instead ;-)

        • @OmarTheBoss: I found it was cheaper to fly to bali with airasia (jetstar price beat) then bali to KL with airasia (I don't think anyone can price beat them there unfortunately due to lowest fare and direct flight vs. Jetstar and Tiger via Singapore). However, prices to bali really depends on the date and fluctuate a lot

    • Doesn't all SYD-Bali go via Melbourne - I thought it meant I wouldn't be able to get a price beat

EDIT: Don't worry - found it. Most flights go via Melbourne

  • Has anyone flown Gold Coast to Bangkok? I see these deals and then get put off by reading through the reviews. Not sure if its worth it when you factor in additional costs to get to GC from Sunshine Coast.

    • ATD, Which reviews are putting you off?? I fly AirAsia Sydney to Bangkok (transit Kul) no problem.

        • Oh. Yep well from my experience the odd delay (probably caused by fast turn around schedules) and the lack of customer service are worth the discount of the tickets. Some expectations of cut-price airlines are unrealistic, and some people want to sit together but they dont want to pay to pick a seat. I couldn't allow myself to travel as much as I do if I was paying 'Full service' airline prices.

  • A reminder note, you can build in a little flexibility by booking outwards and return flights on separate bookings. That way if plans have to change, you might still be able to use one of the trips. IE might not have to lose entire trip. (If you book a 'return flight' and fail to take the outwards leg, then the return leg will die)

  • The food in Malaysia is exceptional, best and safest in Asia (in my opinion). There is so much variety, from every neighbouring country. The nightlife is also outstanding, despite most places closing by 2am. Everything is so damn cheap.

Sadly, the PM is a corrupt monster.

Adding to what Peck said. If you book the two legs separately, it is sometime cheaper on Air Asia.

    • +1

Second PM as corrupt monster :D

    • Just got off the phone with a friend from Malaysia, again she is complaining the PM is a monster and hoping he gets assassinated soon :-/

      • He's probably busy studying Sydney real estate to bury his loot.

      • Just got off the phone with a friend from Malaysia, again she is complaining the PM is a monster and hoping he gets assassinated soon :-/

Yep, I believe the Malaysian PM has been appropriating a lot of taxpayer's money, was in the news recently.

  • +1

Costs almost as much to go by taxi from my house (quite central in Perth) to the airport as for the flight from PER to KLIA. Just crazy.

  • Thanks OP.

Just bought return tickets to Malaysia during the July school holidays for our family of 4. $1190 return in total - bargain!!

Never been to Malaysia, & never looked into it - but carpe diem! Better tell the wife & kids to start planning a 13 day holiday… :-)

  • Booked Syd<->Goa 27/9/16 and 11/10/16 under $500 with satay sticks Syd-kul and kul-Syd legs. No luggage. Via PayPal.

Long layover on return. (I can use complimentary lounge pass that came with my Citibank platinum card in KUL).

Be aware that Air Asia from time to time does change its scheduling… And I'm only half confident that the connection to Goa will actually be as per this booking. (As has happened to me before on booking Syd to Pnh a long way out….)
