  • 5TB - it's still insane, and at a pretty decent price too.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one.

I am $172 poorer where gf is 5TB richer. :)

G'day Ozbargainers, I know the question has been asked regarding what drive is actually in this but different batches have different model drives in them as a rule. Has anyone actually opened up one of these drives purchased from this HN deal and can confirm what drive is in them please?

  • +1

Awesome! Thanks OP. Bought one, and picking it up tonight. :)

  • Nice. Snapped one up!

  • Got one.. but now I want two. Ill have to do it on 2 transactions to save $25 on each. Anyone know how staff would react to picking up 2 on different transactions at the same time.

    • They won't care. Pick up both at the same time.

      • +1

In-store staff may not, online team is a different story - I have at least 4 different emails - so I did 4x separate orders with the $25 off Voucher, its a bit of a punt really - I have had an email on each order to say my order is currently being reviewed, never had that before on Gerry orders so time will tell.

        • same with me… first order implied it's gone through, second order said the online team was reviewing…

fingers crossed for both of us

        • Thanks for placing your order with us. However after careful review, we have decided to not accept your order. We apologise for any inconvenience.

          @PonyTable:

Gerry knows the professionals are onto this deal.

        • Well picked up in QV Melb, and asked if I could buy a second one, she said that it was last one and someone just before picked up 5… Im suspecting it was someone here..

        • @danield: I am guessing you can buy as many as you want at $197 - but when you try to abuse the $25 off its hit and miss, which is entirely fair enough IMO.

        • @PonyTable:

          Official response from HN:

Please be advised the coupon you were using is limited and we had received several orders from yourself.

We have cancelled the excess orders which is why you have received the automatically generated emails.

Your orders are currently being processed/refunded.

  • Thanks TA and theearth! Amazing deal. The OW 5TB for $150 was a price error which they honoured for most. Anything less than $50 per TB is brilliant.

  • Just bought one from QV Melbourne. When I was paying, the cashier said someone had just bought 5!

    • +1

Called the QV store and was told they sold out. Then I called the Richmond store to see if they had stocked and checked the code on the box, most likely had green drives in them so I passed.

From Amazon: For those that would like to see what color drive is inside please refer to DCM: the Green will have DCADBAD on the box bottom label, while all of the Red drives are DCADBAC

Edit: Good luck to they guy who bought 5 if he did indeed buy 5. lolz

    • haha.. yeah just mentioned the same thing above.

  • Finally - found a use for my HN account that I registered for previously but backed-out of the offer.. Thanks again TA - will bolt on for extension to my 1TB RAID NAS :-)

  • As per the slickdeals thread, to tell if it's a RED or GREEN drive:

From info that I have received from over a dozen people, the determining factor appears to be the DCM info. All of the green drives that were inside the WD Elements 5TB external drive that were reported to me had DCM: DCADBAD on the box bottom label, while all of the Red drives had DCM: DCADBAC on the box bottom label.

    • +1

      DCADBAD

Definitely don't want BAD ones! LOL

    • Well, I just grabbed one from HN Alexandria and it is DCADBAD at the bottom, green then.

Greens park the heads every 8 secs on idle whereas Reds are set to 300 secs. Why does it matter so much?

      • please open and report?

      • +2

Parking the heads of the drive equates to more wear and tear when the drive needs to spin up again. The drive uses less power(hence the green title) because it's idling more often, but won't last as long. If you get a green drive it is possible however to modify the firmware to extend the parking head time to 300 seconds.

        • Is that the only difference between red and green? If I can update my green one to 300sec parkig then there is no difference anymore, is it correct?

        • @fvalemus:
Red drive also has double the load cycles than green (although as mentioned below 300k will last 40 years anyway). Red also has 3 year warranty compared to 2 for green.

TLDR;for NAS red is the better choice.

        • +1

          @tarken:

but the warranty would be the same in this case, cos it is an external

        • how do u modify it

          got a source?

  • +1

Aaaaand I just had a 2TB hard drive die, so bought 2x 4TB of these from Amazon with the Amex 15% and the gift card offer. That's the problem with ozbargain, you find a good deal and feel smug with yourself and then 24 hours later, you get p0wned by a new deal.

I gotta go now, I am busy waiting another 2 weeks for my Amazon delivery :(

    • +3

Learnt my lesson long ago - once you've made a decent purchase, especially one you thought was a fantastic deal and couldn't get better, do not check prices and deals remotely related for 6 months.

      • +3

A true ozbargainer will not close their eyes in fear and ignorance. They will read up post-purchase to critically evaluate and improve their methodology to perfect their craft. WE SHALL PREVAIL.

        • +3

I will not use this bargain.
          Bargain is the wallet-killer.
Bargain is the little-death that brings total obliteration to my wallet.
          I will face the bargain.
I will permit the bargain to pass over.
And when it expires I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the bargain has gone there will be nothing left. Only my wallet will remain.

        • This is ozbargain. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Ozbargain is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
Ozbargain, without me, is useless. Without Ozbargain, I am useless. I must fire Ozbargain true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will…
Ozbargain and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit…
Ozbargain is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep Ozbargain clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will…
Before God, I swear this creed. Ozbargain and I are the defenders of my purchases. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory brings bargains and there is no RRP, but heavy discounting!

      • Unless its from Amazon and hasn't arrived yet, I love how they will refund the difference if the price has fallen further.

  • All stores near me out of stock. Counting it as a blessing as I just saved myself from an impulse buy. Already bought a couple hard drives from the last eBay sale!

  • 3/4 of my orders that were in review just got cancelled.

    • Multiple email/$25 off vouchers or full price $197?

      • Multiple emails with $25. Funny thing is the forth order I put through was accepted, but the previous three weren't.
I never like to buy just one drive, so I'm not sure if I'll cancel the order that went through or keep trying.

    • my review order was cancelled also

    • They cancelled my second (new email - with discount) order as well, first went through fine though.

I bought it for my mum but with my CC. Bit annoying but hey what can you do.

      • Yeah exactly, its fair play really.

Good Deal on 1x as long as it turns out to be a RED. Otherwise I am already at Gerry's so I will Return it/Cancel it if not. Thanks for the deal TA.

  • -1

so out of stock? orders cancelled?

  • How long is it taking for people to get their $25 vouchers?
I have been waiting nearly 4 hours now. I want to get one before they run out and don't want to be spammed heaps of crap.

    • Took at worst about 5 Minutes. On all 4x Emails, and they were all unique codes.

So if its longer than that, its probably not coming.

      • My bad I figured it out. I thought it was just for making an account, not subscribing to a newsletter. Need to read the small print better!

  • +8

HARVEY NORMAN AUBURN - All are Green Drives 'BAD' codes. Looked like a klutz too, sifting through the myriad of 5tb drives overturning each of them to read the codes with sales people giving side glances. Have a Taliban looking hairy beard that didn't help. Things I do for Ozbargain.

    • Bad Harvey!

  • +1

The $25 code only works online right? So regardless of what you find in store, try might still give you a green drive?

  • Not getting an email after signing up. Anyone else having this problem? Not in my spam folder either.
Edit: tried a different email and it worked. Weird

  • So is it worth getting if it's green?

    • +1

Its OK - Its Cheaper than the market price which seems to be around $250.00 for a standard WD green 5TB (non USB enclosure) But RED's for this money makes it a great deal, I assume my 1x drive will be a green for sure - as karma gets me back for trying to get 4x $25 vouchers.

  • Is there really any difference in the Red vs Green is just using as external USB 3 drives as nature intended ?

    • +1

Not really going to see a huge difference for standard domestic usage via USB 3.0

      • Thanks. Ok bought 2 via 2 x sign-ups (1 via normal IP and other via VPN). Both gone through fine.

  • Neither of the confirmation emails for my two orders mentioned a review or anything like that. Just said they'd let me know when they're ready to be picked up.

  • If anyone gets a BAC drive please share. They look to be all BAD drives from all reports so far including mine.

  • Reading these comments make me wish I still had my high paying job. Financially and data storage poor. Got a case of beer in fridge tho.

    • +1

Case of beer in the fridge … the simple things in life. Don't underestimate the power of cold beer. Bet at peace.

  • On the one hand I want to buy it.
On the other hand, I don't want to give money to Gerry.

    What do?

    • Do nothing apparently, because it sold out before I made a decision to buy.

      Win win.
      I save $172 on a HDD I didn't need (but want).
I didn't give any money to Gerry.

  • My one is BAD.

    • boy?

      • +1

DCADBAD, It is said which means green inside.

    • As proven by myself and other people - we got RED while it's BAD :-)

  • Managed to pick up a second one with $25 discount, although I mis-read the email header "We'll let you know when your order confirmation is ready for pickup" and thought it said "your order confirmation is ready for pickup". So when I got to the store the order wasn't at the store. The guy was great and cecked with his manager and rang the online processing and got me the item so pretty happy it was awasted trip as it was my mistake, and from the sounds of it here was probably on the verge of being cancelled.
Can confirmed that they are BAD and all the ones on the shelf were too. Would have preferred the reds, however Im in desperate need of storage that Im happy with these, only 20bucks more then then the 4TB Seagate I missed out at Dicks last week.

Can Anyone point me to the firmware details to increase the timeout, as these are going straight to the currently empty QNAP.

  • +5

Picked mine earlier. Opened it up and found a WD Green inside, not WD RED as I was hoping for. But given that a 5TB WD Green sells for $249 at MSY, I'm not gonna complain. :)

BTW, for those who have concerns about warranty once the hdd has been taken out, you can key in the drive's serial number at WD's website. Mine shows a coverage until June 2018.

  • +1

Can anyone shed some light on this "Sorry, your order has been delayed. It shouldn't take too long. We'll contact you as soon as it's ready.". My paypal account has been charged so will I still eventually get the item or not?

    • I got this email too

  • hmmm I signed up with Facebook, I saw nothing about $25 credit when I did, and didn't receive an email.

  • Ok. So how do we check if they are red or green at the store without opening the box ?

    Ta

  • Thanks OP and various commenters.

Managed to order one in Blacktown. I rang up the closest 10 shops and none had BAC drives. All BAD. Haha one store owner said sorry mate we've only got BAD drives lol.

    • Bad?

      Explaine

  • Hi.
Does anyone know if I can lay these drives down?
It suits me a little better if I can, however if not I can deal with it.

    Thanks.

    • The drive inside the housing is usually horizontal when it's inside a PC, so laying the enclosure flat isn't going to do any harm.

    • I don't see why not unless it would block any vents on the drive case. IMHO, HD vertical positioning is only for space saving/convenience and they are better off running horizontally anyway.

      • Thanks.
Have my 2 laying on their side.
Managed to see through the air vents, and read the writing on the discs inside.
I've put them so this writing is the right way up, which actually makes the writing on the external case upside down.

I'll let you know if I have issues.

  • How do I signup for $25 discount?>

    • The link is in my deal description.

  • Hi,
I using 4TB WD my cloud which you can connect an external HD via the USB port at th back. My question is: Would it support 5TB?

  • Thanks just bought 2.

Not really concerned if they're green or red, red is really only useful if you want them in a NAS.

  • Thanks OP.

  • It is gone ? the link does not work on the 5TB drive anymore

  • Yeah.. item has been removed from their store.. That said, I placed an order around 5.30pm yesterday with the $25 coupon and while I initially got a order confirmation, i've yet to receive any notification that it's ready to pick up, even tho it was listed as in stock at my local store (hoppers crossing).

Guessing that HN has cancelled orders again.

    • Just pop in and get it before they cancel it.

      • I'm not really fussed about it either way.. especially considering that most are BAD drives.. and I'm not sure I can be bothered going there only to be told no..

  • hn deal gone, link is void i think?

    • +1

Had a convo with livechat, they said product link has been removed to avoid over-selling as they have limited stock.

      • They are starting to worried about earning too much.

      • He suggested going in-store, but you probably can't use the $25 intro voucher this way.

        • Went to HN yesterday, and the price tag is 248, then it is not a deal with that price

        • @mafim:
Ask for someone higher up or go to another store, deal last to 12/10 and its definitely online and instore

    • They removed the link because it was misleading. The original link said "WD Elements 5TB Portable Hard Drive", however it is a desktop and not a portable hard drive.

  • I am sour that I checked my store had available and had a nap for 2 hours, then it's gone.

  • Still waiting on notification to pick up. Initially bought 2 hoping it's the red drives. How do I cancel if it's not red drive?

  • +4

Hi all…. i just picked mine up from HN. GOOD NEWS!!!! The outbox had code DCADBAD on it so i thought awwww green drive due to comments above… but not a bad deal anyway. Snapped open the pesky WD box and inside…. IT's RED!!!!!! woohoooo!!
