TPG Mobile New VF 4G Plans - $19.99/Mth $400 Calls & SMS, 1.3GB Data - No Contract

1551

TPG Mobile have changed carriers from Optus to Vodafone and it's actually a pretty decent low-mid tier user plan.

For $19.99/month (+$10 one off sim fee)

$400 Included "Value" for Calls and SMS
- call rates are the standard (ie pretty high) for these sort of caps - 99c/min + 40c flag fall, SMS 25.3c. MMS 50c.

1.3GB Included Data (per KB Billing)
-option of +$10/GB excess blocks

And for what they are worth…
Unlimited Calls to TPG Mobile, TPG Home Phone, TPG Support 13 14 23
Unlimited Voicemail Deposit & Retrieval

This is all on a month to month no contract basis.

There are also the higher caps, but in my opinion aren't that special in terms of what else is available at this price range:
$29.95/month for Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 2GB data
$39.95/month for Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 5GB data

The $19.99 deal is in my opinion one of the best around and arguably better than what it previously was under Optus, but now with a more useable data inclusion. No discount for TPG ADSL users unfortunately.

Caveats
-$10 one off SIM fee

-Vodafone Network
I haven't used them personally since the horror mass exodus days. Supposedly if Whirlpool is to be believed, they're now much improved especially around metro areas (less so in the bush). Have a look at Oztowers where you can actually find the Vodafone towers near you and the bands they operate on. Having a phone which has LTE 850MHz would be very useful to make the most of improved signal strength, especially indoors. It's the equivalent of 4GX for Telstra/Optus on their 700MHz band.

-Although you pay $19.99/month as technically a post paid plan, once you use up the $400 in call credits, you need to top up your account before able to make more calls/SMS. Good in that it helps avoid nasty bill shock. Inconvenient I guess if you're going over often, though it's probably a signal to change to a higher cap plan.

-No international SMS, voice calls included. As a suggestion, if these things are important to you, VOIP and web SMS services like Pennytel probably offer the best deals in relation to this.

Get out of jail free card…
If you don't like it for whatever reason (eg VF network), switch to this Optus deal before Nov 28
$20/month with Unlimited calls and SMS with 1GB/month. However, $10 discount only lasts for 12 months until which point it goes back to a pretty mediocre $30/month (ie look for someone else time).

Comparisons for ~$20

1) Spintel - Optus 4G
The guys I used to be with. However, they've destroyed their own selling point with a new $5 fee to reduce down usage tiers starting next month in November.
It used to be that for $18/month you'd have 200 mins of calls, 200 SMS and 500MB of data, with the option of increasing calls/SMS/data by one tier if you breached the cap. Next month you could then reduce them back down to the minimums and see where the month takes you.
Now with a $5 tier reducing fee, you're essentially stuck on your higher usage tiers as it costs more to reduce them back down. Thus destroying the flexibility and whole point of the tier system.
Still a very good deal though if you're mainly after data. You could get for $27 4GB of data, 200 mins calls and 200 SMS.

2) Amaysim - Optus 4G
On their $19.99 Flexi plan you have 500Mb of included data and then you can use the rest of the credit for calls, SMS or data packs.
Pretty good, but if you can cope with the VF network the TPG deal offers a more balanced deal with more inclusions.

3) Boost Mobile Telstra 4G
Main pros are that it runs on the Telstra network. 1GB data inclusion and unlimited SMS is decent too. However, only 100 mins of calls. Also this weird Sunday extra data thing for 24 hours. Again the TPG deal has more inclusions, but it depends on whether you need Telstra for reception.

4) Vaya
Just don't go there. Horror stories by the truckload and dodgy as all hell. Highest number of TIO complaints for any carrier/number of users. They may seem cheap, but with the "out of my dead hands" $20 security deposit, errant billing and general unreliability, I'd stay far far away. Just have a look at some of the comments in the Ozbargain deals as well

First month minimum charge is $29.90.

  • what? no love for existing customers?

      • but I don't want to switch to Optus, I want to stay with TPG, darn I don't even have 4G, how come new customers get 4G and existing customers don't?

        • I think someone got the new offer from TPG. Check the RSS feeds (deal not published as targeted). But it included international calling, 4G, 1GB data all on the new network for $19.99.

I wonder, if ADSL customers gets the bonus $2 discount in the new plan?

    • Please remain patient as we will be sending you a special invitation and bonus offer to move over to our new plans on the Vodafone network.

For those customers who don't wish to wait for our special invitation and bonus offer, a change of plan facility will be made available in the next 2 weeks - please check back later.

      • thats what I got from trying to upgrade my hp package

      • From the previous Optus Deal thread for existing TPG customers:

TPG will be sending invitations to existing customers to try out the Vodafone network (in the next 2 weeks) . The offer will be free of charge for >2months. After 2 months you either sign-in and stay on the Vodafone network or go elsewhere cause their current Optus plans will no longer exist .

        Extra info:
TPG will be sending new Vodafone sims (free) to existing customers if interested in the trial.
Their new Vodafone plans do not include international calls any more.
OPTUS has released new offers to keep their TPG customers. Good for once to see some aggressive competition.
Approximately 300,000 TPG customers will either stay with TPG on the Vodafone network or port elsewhere.
If interested in international calls, Virgin mobile $40/month plan (unlimited calls/text + 4 giga of data) includes $200 international call

This current deal posted specifically relates to people signing up now.

      • 5 weeks later, no special invitations arrived yet.

  • No special for existing TPG internet customer?

    • +2

I don't know who's worse between TPG and Vaya, probably Vaya/LiveConnected

      • +2

Definitely Vaya/Live connected. I've been with both.

        • i dont understand the hate with them

been with them for several years and havent had a problem?

        • +3

          @furythree:
You haven't been stung by them before. It's cheap and all until there is a problem.

I had to get the TIO to intervene multiple times on errant billings (my cc of details were apparently wrong even though they were going through for the previous 12 months), errant data counting and having data switched off, impossible to contact and I was still getting billed 3 months after I ported away. Their excuse was that there was no way the system could tell that I ported away which is utter BS.

This isn't an isolated event. Read the WP and ozbargain threads linked.

For me the risk of something going wrong and wasting time to get it right via the TIO isn't worth the $2/month saving.

        • @furythree: I'm with you here. Been with Vaya for years and never a problem. Great customer support - always get through relatively quickly and they fix the problem without a hassle. Adding extra data is cheap and easy - literally one click and an extra 1GB for $8.
I've been with TPG and Exetel and have nothing but horror stories from them - would never go back to either. I think when dealing with any of these low cost re-sellers it's a case of YMMV.

        • +5

          @furythree:

The Vaya hate stems from a number of things.

Back when they started, the CEO promised users on Whirlpool that they would get to keep whatever rates they signed up for 2 years at least, even though the plans were month-to-month.

IIRC around May 2014 Vaya changed all their plans to count data by MB sessions. This is effectively a decrease in data of anywhere up to 50%. i.e. 1 GB of data on per MB billing is equivalent to 500MB of per KB billing.

Note that up to this point all previous Vaya plans were per KB billing.

Around September 2014 Vaya decided the older per KB plans were no longer sustainable and introduced a "Plan Freeze Fee" of +$10/month. Effectively they were increasing prices for all existing customers and they tried to sell this as "good news" (literally the words they used in the email to customers).

Customers had the choice of choosing to pay an extra $10/month to keep the per KB billing they already had, or switch to the then current per MB billing plans.

Obviously customers were annoyed that the CEO's promise of keeping their plan prices stable for 2 years had not been kept.

Furthermore, presumably due to the mass exodus of customers, Vaya added a $20 refundable security deposit around January 2015. The claim was that customers were not paying their final month's bill.

Finally, from personal experience, Vaya will sting you for garbage such as a failed billing attempt ($10/pop which for someone on the $18/month plan is >50% of the monthly fee!).

The issue that MVNOs like Vaya and Spintel have is that they run ultra thin margins, and they don't have the scale to make it work. Which means there's no room for error in their assumptions about customers' usage and their underlying wholesale relationship with Optus.

Note that when telcos sell you fixed data whether it's 1.5GB, 4GB or 7GB there's an assumption that you won't use all of that data. They're banking that on average customers might use 30% of that and price accordingly whilst using the headline quota as a marketing feature.

Beyond simply being ultra-cheap most customers want stability. I realise we're on OzBargain where it's a point of pride to save every last cent but generally it's a PITA to have to change carriers every few months.

        • @solar:

We've been with Vaya for quite a while (since Amaysim prices jumped), and are currently on the $18 pm plan with $650 of calls and 1.5GB of data. No issue's as yet.

        • @Storm: I am on the exact same plan. Vaya also returned to KB billing a few months ago. I had a problem going over data when it was per MB, but at $8/GB I was fine bumping it up whenever I needed it. Since KB billing returned, I haven't hit my cap.

Maybe there will be issues when I try to switch, but so far it's been fine.

        • @furythree: If you are talking about VAYA, try contacting customer service for issues, also when you close your account you will keep receiving bill (or they will keep deducting money) for next few months. They may stop charging and start charging after a few months even though you are no longer with them.

        • -3

@goosmurf: Mate you have absolutely NO IDEA ! self proclaimed expert. Well all know what an EX_SPERT is. Now as a long term vaya customer let me put the facts right:
          1. You have no idea what margins are for Vaya or any other Telco so stop talking nonsense. And you do NOT know the effects of these margins. Point is when a number of MVNOs went down a couple of years ago (Woolworths, Kogan etc) Vaya stood fast and shined. Unlike other MVNOs they have not slashed any data or benefits from the plans as a result of that fallout. Even today Aldi has just cut their 365 day credit expiry to just 30 days. That is after numerous other cut backs to thier plans. So Vaya is definitely one of the best MVNOs around.
          2. The old Vaya 3G vaya plans were billed in MB not KB. So you got this totally back-the-front. This applied to ALL 3G plans not just vaya. The technology for KB billing became available with the introduction of 4G plans for all Telcos. Yes, Vaya were a little slow off the mark but KB billing is standard billing now. and NO there is no extra cost for that! You calculation that 1GB data is equivalent to 500MB is a complete illusion. Just how do you arrive at that without knowing how anyone uses thier data? What a load of RUBBISH! In fact you should be fined for deliberating diseminating misleading and deceptive information. You are way way off the mark on EVERYTHING you have said. I mean EVERYTHING! I dont know why you are doing this but its plain WRONG!
          3. Vaya kept to thier word with thier old 3G plans and did run them unchanged for 2 years after they were discontinued whether you were on a 2 year contract or month to month.
          4. Im not sure where you get the information that there was a mass exodus of customers from Vaya. I believe that information is also entirely wrong. (deliberately misleading and deceptive) When the end came for the $11/mth 3G plans like many other Vaya customers I was very disappointed. But after looking around myself and lots of friends and family I had on Vaya found that the equivalent $18/mth 4G plan was still miles ahead of everyone else so I stayed with them because I could not do better elsewhere. Not even close!
          5. In a nutshell Vaya have been the most stable and best value Telco I have ever come across and people like you that diseminate totally misleading and deceptive information conjured up out of thin air should be BANNED from this site!

        • @solar: That discovery is very interesting. Could you provide an actual monthly data usage comparison for before and after KB billing please. Would love to know the true effect on measured data usage.

        • @dan0909: Generally should should promptly inform your old Telco that you have ported away from them. They should be able to confirm this and also that you will no longer be billed. Always get a receipt ot reference number in case you ned to follow up.

        • @Amayzingone:
What a rant. Fined? Banned? Right….

        • @Amayzingone: Well, it's hard to quantify as my use case is not identical from month to month - so I can provide more anecdotal evidence than output from my statements. With MB billing, I hit just below 1.5GB by the end of each month, and 3 times within the year prior to KB billing change I needed to buy an extra GB (to cover the last few days of the month). Since the change, I hit about 1.3 GB tops, usually getting the "80% warning" just as the month is ending.

        • @Amayzingone:

Re #2 - the facts are plain and simple that the original 3G plans were KB billing, then went to MB billing with the introduction of 4G (which coincided with the "plan freeze fee", then back to KB billing.

As for comparing per KB and per MB, I did the only thing I could do with the data available. I took my Vaya itemised bill (at the time KB billing), imported into Excel, and rounded each session up to the nearest MB. That inflated my usage between 80% and 100%.

Re #3 - quite a number of customers expressed disappointment in the broken 24 month promise. Feel free to read for yourself:
          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2262441
          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2312551

For your convenience you can search for "plan freeze" in the first link to find the beginning of the saga.

    • Value is better but yeah their customer service is pretty bad. Been with them for 2 years on the $18 plan. 1.5GB and $650 "worth" of calls. Optus 4G network so as reliable as Optus. Just expect to fight customer service if you need to deal with them. That said, the few occasions I've done so, I've got what I wanted in the end.

      • At least you got the desired result and thats a plus for Vaya! No point fighting with Vodafone. You get nowhere with them. Thats why we left them

    • +4

Vaya is horrible. Stay away at all costs!

  • do we HAVE to switch?
cant we just keep using our existing TPG sim? andget the 4g data on the existing tpg plan..

    • good question

  • +4

I just tried switching to it, and the TPG site told me to wait 2 weeks. So just a heads up.

  • +17

    exclude internation call and text
    pass!!!

    • +3

i know right, what the hell

    • +2

$20/month guys… What equivalent priced plan includes international calls that's still available now for new users?

      • +2

        TeleChoice?

300MB data is too low for most though…

Rate /min is ridiculously high compared with a VOIP plan (1-2c/min).

So for example to India Mob $2.40/min, $300 "value" = 2 hours (excluding flagfall too..). Equivalent VOIP rate for 2 hr = $2.50.

        • @plasmapuff: shouldn't you be comparing with other telcos and not voip?

        • @ChillBro: Only mentioning it as hardly any plans at this $20 mark offer international calls. (ones currently available)

If you did want to use the minimal cap values for international calls, the VoIP rates just highlight how much you're being overcharged for international calls to be included.

E.g. Telechoice $300 cap credit = 2 hrs of international calls. You could get 2 hrs for like $1 to $2 on voip and use the $300 on local calls/not going over your cap limit and paying excess. You're paying $19 for this $300 of funny money credit.

Just highlighting that there are cheaper ways to get international calls.

        • @ChillBro: yeah, I use Yatango and I only pay $11 for 1GB data, I seldom call/text so use their PAYG rate for them. for international calls I subscribed a skype premium (which is discontinued) that allows me to call a lot of countries for 600 mins in a month for somewhat $6. that's about $18-19, and never actually finished that 10 hours of international calls. considering change to a smaller call pack.

      • Virgins old plans had included international calls and sms. I still have a $20 plan with international inclusions.

The new plans unfortunately don't, which is a bloody ripoff imho.

      • Amaysim FLEXI, only 500MB of data then.

      • it was include international call and 1.5GB data on $17 plan

    • +2

Definitely the worst part of the change and for me the only point of difference in value for TPG up to now. Without international calls and SMS included in the credit this plan has no unique point of value anymore.

    • Expecting International calls… from a mobile… and $20 plan??

      Delusional.

  • +1

    Is Vodafone reception still terrible?

    • +5

I find it better than both optus & telstra (i switch monthly between them all). mainly Sydney CBD & North West.
they have come a long way since the vodafail days.

these plans compare favourably against Lebara, also on VF network

      • -1

Vodafone is definitely not better than Telstra. Vodafone is hit and miss except in regional areas where it's nearly totally my ss.
If you can show me one coverage map from Vodafone that's as comprehensive Ve as the Telstra map, I'll eat my words.

        Vodafone/Optus are bad coverage
Telstra (even wholesale) is good-great coverage

Telstra wholesale coverage (as I was informed) excludes 4g and coverage at mining sites.

Vaya/LiveConnected rate a special mention for TIO complaints that are off the charts.

        • +3

I don't dispute that telstra is better in regional and better for total Aus coverage, but for my needs, and where I use my phone 99% of the time, VF is better.

        • +1

          'Vodafone/Optus are bad coverage'

Seems a bit one sided. For 99% of the population, Optus and Vodafone are fine.

      • +1

Agreed, was a long time Optus customer, switched to Vodafone and coverage has improved and less drop outs on trains (Perth)

    • +1

A while back, I was on Vodafone and got out of my contract 3 months in because of the real shit service (late texts, calls not coming through, no service etc) and moved over to Telstra. I am now living in the Gold Coast now where I have found that my Telstra service was pretty bad (they gave me 3 months free for it) and my gf's Vodafone service was way better than mine. I was apprehensive after my previous experience so I ported over to Vodafone prepaid and I am pretty impressed by how much they have improved. My data coverage here is better than Telstra. It could be a Gold Coast thing but thats why I only do pre paid now so I can pick and choose providers.

edit: Also I have better cellular coverage and have had absolutely no issues with dropped calls or late texts etc.

    • +3

There's no real answer to this. You'll get loads of anecdotal responses but the reality is it will depend heavily on where you use your mobile service.

In general the consensus is that within metro areas Voda, Optus and Telstra are largely similar. Voda claims that they roam onto Optus' tower in regional areas but in general regional users will tell you that your only choice is Telstra and sometimes Optus.

All of them have black spots which their respective users will be familiar with so people will tell you <carrier> sucks at <location> and their friend on <other carrier> at <location> worked fine.

What no one can tell you is that they've actively used all 3 carriers in every location they frequent to give you a balanced overview.

Often these problems are also intermittent because some tower was being worked on.

If it's worth your time (i.e. the saving of moving to TPG/Voda is great enough) you could pick up a cheap pre-paid Voda SIM and test it out but keep in mind if you do this you'll likely only be testing the areas where you anticipate Vodafone coverage to be questionable. You won't notice the black spots you don't anticipate - for example in Sydney there's a well known Voda black spot along the North Shore train line which is very metro. But, to be fair, Telstra and Optus both have problems along this same stretch.

    • Vodafone reception has improved dramaticaly in the last couple of years. No problems at our end and we are using Lebara who ride on Vodafone

  • I'm with TPG mobile, but am hesitant to switch due to hearing horror stories from other peeps. What's Vodafail like?

    • +1

Just had a call with a friend today who is on voda. Call got dropped 4 times (I'm not even exaggerating) over 15 mins while he was on a terrestrial train (coming back from work). And this is Melbourne. And this is with a nexus 5. So it uses the special band voda has.

If it were me having a service like that I'd hurl my phone in rage. Honestly it's 2015 and they still have call dropouts.

      • Dodgy fingers/ear? It may sound silly, but my friend accidently hangs up on me half the time. Well… he says it's an accident… hmm…

    • +1

Vodafone is great in Melbourne, can't speak for Perth but you would need to try it out for a month yourself as it depends on where you live/work/travel.

    • Perth:

I was previously with Optus for 8 years and have now been with Vodafone for 6 months.

Overall it has been perfectly fine and the $5 roaming has been excellent (Bali).

I have better coverage in the trains with less drop outs compared to Optus. In the country, it switches to Optus Roaming.

Never had an issue and always speak to aussies if I need to call, they also give a notification in advance that your account will be charged in regards to your monthly bill.

  • +1

After years with TPG and feeling screwed by their data cutback plans I left for Vaya then a few months later moved onto Vodafone (VF) and found VF to be faster and more reliable than the Optus resellers.

I might go back now they're with VF on the $39.95/m. The way Sydney trains are failing lately I'll need the extra data for the additional time spent in transit streaming Di.fm.

  • +9

So for $2 more a month I get 300MB data and no international calls, and less calls to other networks. Nope. A big fat pass for me.

    • I wish we could pass, problem is it look like we won't have a choice :(.

      • Where does it say that our how do you know we'll be forced on to these new plans?

  • This or Bendigo???

  • Wasn't Telstra BYO $50/m plan incl. Unlimited calls and SMS w/ 5GB data? what a shame.

    • Telstra's Boost $40/m is now on 4G, has the same 'unlimited' calls, texts and MMS with 3GB/m + 1GB/d every Sunday.

  • im existing customer and I got a sms

  • I'm with grandfather tpg plan $16.99 with tpg adsl discount.
I don't mind move to Vodafone if they offer me more data with little increase in price.

  • +1

Seriously guys, how do you live with 1.3GB???

each day i already used up 200-300mb in no time! i use 12gb per month almost used up every month! Facebook, wechat, whatsapp and safari only…

    • +8

How you can use that much Without streaming music or video? 200-300mb at no time, That is Hugh usage IMHO.

      • I think i have to get back on this next month. let me refresh my 12GB and see how in November i will report back………………

        See what I usually use.

From history, i rarely do video and stream music.

        • +4

must be from all those videos ppl post up on fb.
I have never gone over a 1 gb.
Me: Extremely heavy Ozbargain and whatsapp usage. Rarely go on fb.
          I use WIFI at home

    • +2

      This is a $19.99/month plan…

There are other $60+ dollar plans if you need that much data.

I'm using Wifi at home and am in partial Wifi at work. So 1.3GB is heaps for web browsing, email, FB, messaging, google maps etc..
I can wait until I'm in Wifi for youtube/video. If you're super keen, you can preload youtube videos, podcasts etc all offline.

    • You must be on it all day non-stop or something is draining your data. I use about 600mb a month on average and I use the same as you minus wechat.

    • 12GB? What the heck man? I barely use 1GB a month. Don't you have Wifi at home and what do you do in public transport? My journey is about to uni and home is usually about 3 Hours and all I do I read some stuff. I don't do any social stuff but some of the tech sites like the verge are pretty heavy on graphics and even than 1GB a month. What on earth do you use 12GB for.

    • +1

Thats alot of porn to watch onyour mobile.

    • +3

Disable your whatsapp and wechat media auto download. Its happened with me when someone invited me to a whatsapp group which is full of videos and pictures.

  • +4

    What! Excluding international calls/sms!

Family is on the ~$24 plan with TPG, with $500 calls, and 500mb data (I think). They use up most of their credit on international calls. With this new deal, that won't be the case - disappointing! I haven't found any other carrier to offer so much international credit for a cheap plan (particularly for countries that are not included in the '20 countries you can call for free/discounted rates' type promotions).

What's the deal if you don't want to move to these new plans? Will they be keeping the old/current plans going? Or what happens?

    • Switch to a VOIP plan?
      https://www.pennytel.com.au/personal-voip/plans

Can dial it on your mobile with data (mobile or wifi) using an app like CSipSimple, I'm sure similar ones exist for iOS.

      • Thanks plasmapuff. :)

I've just had a quick look, and it seems like my country is excluded from their "80 countries". Do you know if any VoIP providers have a more expansive list?

And separately, what's the call quality like in comparison to standard international calls? We already have issues with quality on a standard call, and wifi-calls are out (eg using Viber or Whatsapp calls = pretty much impossible).

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

        • I don't suppose you'd be willing to share your country?

Skype might be another option: https://secure.skype.com/en/calling-rates the subscription might be cheaper than credits for >100 mins.

        • @elusive: Hi elusive, Sure, it's Lebanon that my relatives are after.

With TPG at the moment, looks like they get 169mins at $2.95/min and $500 credit.

Skype is $30/month for 120mins. That would have to be on top of a separate telco plan… That is more than double current expenses!

          It's not looking good. :(

Update: Found a random VoIP provider (called smartVoIP) that offers calls to my location, at 20c/min. So I can barely get 100mins before I hit the same $$ as the TPG plan. While the TPG plan offers many more mins than that (I forget exactly - almost 250mins) AND is an actual mobile plan too.

        Gah. :(

      • Switch to a VOIP plan?

Plasmapuff, Pennytel is in liquidation and there is no way for new users to sign up. See the article on their news page, titled "MyNetFone Keeps PennyTel Customers Connected":
        https://www.pennytel.com.au/news

        • Thanks for the update. Hmm I must have an old account still. Who would you recommend now?

          @plasmapuff:

Keep the Pennytel plan, MNF might keep PT going for existing customers.

Consider the MNF "Whirlpoolsaver" plan as a backup, $0 per month, $20 signup fee includes $10 of credit:
          https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/VoIP/Plans/WhirlpoolS…

Note that this is a special plan for users of Whirlpool.net.au, but you don't have to prove membership to get it. Signup to Whirlpool.net.au is free anyway, if you are interested.

Note that you can't navigate to the WhirlpoolSaver plan from MNF's homepage. You have to know the link, which I gave above.

Also look at the Neosaver plan, $5 monthly fee gives you 100 landline calls, and some international destinations are billed as local calls.

    • Same here. Parents are on a very old plan that offers 1gb and $550 calls for $20. Would really suck to see that go. It's essentially like having overseas relative in your local area with that much international call credit available.

      • Same I'm starting to freak out :(.

  • meh. The usual TPG 'gotcha's to stop it being a good deal. $400 "value" is too small, and then the $30 & $40 plans EXCLDUE MMS, wtf, the $20 plan includes it.

    Screw you, TPG

  • Hey op
Where does it say Vaya charge a $20 security deposit? can't find it on their website

      http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Additional%20Fees%20and%20Cha…
As usual they've excluded it from the PDS of the actual plan and hidden it somewhere else…

      They haven't changed.

This TIO report highlights the high complaints rate with Vaya:
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2393287&r…

I think a better way to look at the stats is by comparing based on complaints per 10,000 customers
      https://www.tio.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/167881/Co…

Jan 2014 – Mar 2014 Vaya had 62 new Mobile complaints (6.2 per 10,000 services)
July 2014 – Sept 2014 Vaya had 379 new Mobile Complaints (37.9 per 10,000 services)
      Oct 2014 – Dec2014 Vaya had 895 new Mobile Complaints (89.5 per 10,000 services)
Jan 2015 – Mar 2015 Vaya had 1244 new Mobile Complaints (124.4 per 10,000 services)
(Note: Have assumed Vaya has 100,000 mobile services)

In comparison, Amaysim with a fairly steady average of around 200 complaints per month over the last 6 months (1.4 Complaints per 10,000 Services)
Optus and Telstra only average about 6 Complaints per 10,000 services
Anyway you look at the stats, you can see Vaya complaints have soared over the last year.
I think they thoroughly deserve the title of "Australia's Worst Mobile Provider"

Don't go with Vaya, when you leave the billing system shits itself and won't stop billing you even after you ported out.

  • +3

I don't think any vodaphone price is worth the risk of me constantly complaining about lack of reception.

    • Ummm what risk? you can leave without any hassle. It could be markedly better in your area. I see no downside to trying.

      • Being decent in one area is only useful for people that don't travel, ever. That would be a very small percentage of the population.
I went on a school camp a few months back. 1 mobile phone worked an hour out of the city, mine. I was on Telstra wholesale - no one else was. I believe the other adults were with Optus, but I was the only Telstra. The word spread among the adults and my phone was popular.

        • I never said ONE area. LOL come on man, you can travel. My point, which i thought was obvious, is about the areas you frequent. Of course, there are definitely areas where Telstra is the only signal. We all know this. But is that really a concern for me for that 0.1% of my time… no. For you it sounds like it is, we all have different priorities.

    • It's not as bad as it used to be. Coming from Optus I actually have better coverage with Vodafone (Perth)

I'm one of the few still on Vaya and still have no complaints. Just thought I'd share, so people know that there are some still using Vaya who are still finding it ok!

Yaya was my backup but after hearing the horror stories in the op links in having second thoughts. The non trust able billing is scarring me.
