It's BCG820BSS not BSG. no idea why I can't change it.

Edit: thanks for changing it guardian modangel

    • +1

      Wtf r u talking about… Lol

    • +1

Didn't see that. Feel free to take it down or report or cite references. Was looking through ebay and thought it was worthy to be put as a deal.

      • -2

Wow - I post a deal, someone else duplicates it, then I get negged for mentioning that I originally posted… WTF?!?!
Sure jtsback, you could at least reference my deal in your original post here. I can't do anything with it, coz I didn't post the deal and I'm not a mod.

        • +5

You've been here long enough, you should know the rules.

          Exceptions:
The original deal is a list of multiple items and the item is not contained in the title of the original deal.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guidelin…

I saw your post, but I didn't open it to see the details. Many others would have missed the grinder.
We're all here to share bargains.

If glory of being recognised on ozbargain is what gets you up then sure, because I personally don't gaf as long as the deal is up. I was just proactive enough to share it with the community.

But don't come and tell me this was a dupe. THAT'S why you got negged.

        • -5

          @jtsback: it's called etiquette!
And before you post a deal…
          Search first
Someone else might have already submitted the deal

        • @thedriver:
Take your own advice about etiquette.
B****ing about recognition for a post that doesn't even have the product in the title or even tagged. Hardly what I call etiquette.

        • +4

          @thedriver:

Yea I did. Therefore it's not a dupe.

        • -4

          @Max Power:
          You clearly can't read!

          @thedriver:
Please enlighten me. What have I missed?
Your post doesn't have the product in the title and is not tagged.
The OP had searched to see if there was an existing post.
If you still think you should get recognition, please report the post or contact a mod.

        • @Max Power:
Good rule. I would have missed this

    • +4

Worth re-posting. A lot of people will not bother looking at a post for a $2k all-in-one, but might want a good grinder.

      • +2

Unless you're really struggling for bench space 2 standalones are a much smarter choice than an AIO coffee unit. Pundits in the field always recommend against getting a unit with an incorporated grinder. I've a Compak K3 Touch but the Breville is a very capable grinder and thats a very good price.

  • +7

Awesome grinder, dont hesitate if you are looking for one.
    You found the right one!

    • -2

Really? My father bought a $150 breville grinder and its too coarse to use in an espresso machine - you have to really read up on reviews to see if your grinder can go fine enough to make a turkish coffee or use in an espresso machine or you'll be wasting your $$$. Personally i cant afford a good grinder yet and i'm using a hario mini mill manual grinder and it can grind far finer than the breville machine ever did.

      • +4

But did he buy this one? There was another Breville grinder (I forget the model number) that didn't grind fine enough for espresso, but the Smart Grinder is what we're using here at work, and it can choke up our espresso machine without any fuss. There was an earlier version that needed a shim-kit to get it fine enough, but this one is already in the right grind-range.

This one's great, especially for the money. You'll need to triple/quadruple that price at least to get something only slightly better.

        Recommended.

        • With new beans in my single basket, I need to grind on setting 18 or so with this grinder, and about 13 with the double. Any finer and it starts to choke.

This is without any manual burr adjustment. The old 800 model used to need a shim kit to make finer.

      • +1

        @JohnKG
It's this specific model, not any Brevile grinder. I have never seen this at $150 retail so I doubt it was the same model. Read up on Coffee Snobs. Even those guys give this one the thumbs up at its usual price point. At $160 this is a no brainer if you want a decent grinder.

      • YES! I've had exactly this problem with my Smart Grinder for ages now. It's perpetually on the finest setting, and even then that's only ever good for really fresh beans. Anything older tends to pour way too quickly.

        • +4

The BCG800 (older version) in a lot of cases required the installation of a shim kit to get a finer grind. Once installed it lets you grind at the right level. The BCG820 has the manual adjustment of the burrs which the BCG800 does not have. If you have the older model and you're stuck on the finest grind email/ring Breville customer support and ask for a shim kit to be sent to you, which will be free.

      • Breville smart grinders are really good, I have the previous model and works great, able to adjust grind settings from plunger, filter to espresso. Not too sure what you are on about. Maybe your beans arent fresh, there were cases of this happening and there was a fix for it as mentioned above.

  • +2

Remember if you are interested in getting a Breville 920 machine, this grinder comes included.

    • That's good to know, I'll wait for an offer for the 920 then.

    • I don't believe all retailers package the grinder

      • From talking to a few sales people, it shouldn't be the retailer and is how the item is sold from Breville. Obviously make sure before hand though.

  • +1

This is a good price for the grinder itself. I too am waiting on a decent price for the BES920.

  • Bought this a few months back at the last special ($199.00 ?), it's a great grinder, a big step up from the Sunbeam 680 we had. Might not be up to coffeesnob standards but no complaints here. Was looking to pair it with a BES920 but opted for a Lelit single boiler instead as we only make 1-2 coffees at a time.

    • Can I ask which coffee machine did you buy? I'm in the same position. I only make coffee's on weekends so couldnt bring myself to buy the BES920.

      • I got the Lelit PL41TEMD (and a metal tamper to suit) wasn't cheap (about a grand) but is supposed to be built like a tank and makes a great coffee. Did a lot of reading and comparisons before committing though.(I actually lay-by'd it so wont be here for another week or so. :) )

        • Awesome! Thanks so much for the feedback :)

  • +1

Sigh my old sunbeam grinder still works fine, I can't justify this upgrade :(. Could really use the dosing and tidier feed.

    • exactly why i bought this smart grinder. You'll be happy. Trust me. And you can a few bucks for your sunbeam on GT or FB

  • I've had this grinder for about a year and it's solid. Only thing is that recently mine has started humming/electrical hum which I'm sensitive too and find really annoying. Not much I can do about it though.

  • +1

How does this cope with dried plant matter?

    • Let's hope it copes as well as a VPN with dried text matter

    • +1

      dried plant matter

      Uhm … for medicinal purposes?

  • Definitely one of the best coffee grinders (burr grinder) for the money. Pretty highly rated by coffee aficionados :)

  • This grinder is okay. Clumps up a lot for oily roasts

  • Can this grind nuts?

    • +5

If you can fit them in there! :)

      Or did you mean 'nuts'?

  • Good price. I bought a factory second for ~$200 a year ago so this is a great price.
As for the actual grinder itself I'm a terrible barista (skills still a work in progress) so can't vouch for it's quality. I'm still having trouble calibrating what I want out of it lol.

  • +1

Good grinder. Similar quality of grinding as a Rancillo Rocky, probably not as good as a Mazzer Mini.

Good size as well, quite compact.

  • If an auto grinder is what you're after, this is where you jump in. Has been a crowd favourite since the original version launched. At this price it's a real no-brainer.

I sold mine in order to help finance a Lido 3 E hand grinder purchase recently; I have zero complaints about my time with the BCG820.

  • +1

I have one of these for my Rancilio Silvia. Don't hesitate to buy this grinder… it is the best in its price bracket!

  • Great price, great product!
I have had one of these years and it is still going strong. I use it everyday.

  • i want one!!!!

  • This is the crowd favourite on the Coffee Snobs forum.

Seriously cheap for what it is, and makes a great team with my Sunbeam 6910.

  • Damn, somehow the coupon dropped off when I ordered and I got stung full price. I don't often ebay so what's the fix? :-/

    • Contact TGG by Ebay. Click My ebay -> puchase history -> more action on the item you bought -> contact sller.

Ask them to cancel your order and reorder it :)

      • weird. total on paypal is $208.62,

        but the summary says:

        Paid with
        $39.80 20% off THE GOOG GUYS on eBay | 13-19th Oct 2015 #CTGG20
        $168.82 VISA x-xxxx

and my transaction summary says $208.62

        paypal problem?

        • +1

It's OK. After a few days the correct amount will show up on Paypal. For some weird reason the discount isn't shown immediately. Your CC will only be charged the "after discount" amount.

        • @LoungeLizard: Ta. thanks for that

  • +2

Daily user here. Would highly recommend it. Best grinder for this price.

  • Wow, I just bought my first bag of coffee beans this morning since I thought it would be fun to make coffee at home. I don't have a grinder or an espresso machine.

Would this work okay with a French press for the time being? With the intention of upgrading to something better to brew with later on.

    • +1

It does have settings for French press grounds :)

      • Perfect!

    • +1

Great first step. Freshly ground is so much better for ALL types of coffee. Even better if you can also get freshly roasted beans - the stuff in the supermarkets can sometimes be months old.

      • Agreed. The beans I bought smell amazing! Cant wait to get some of them ground and brewed.

    • +1

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Sunbeam-Espresso-Machine-Grin… is a good option for new home brewers.

I know Brevile make a equivalent machine as well that would go nicely with this grinder.

But to answer your question yes you can use this grinder with a French press.

      • I'm a little way of investing in an espresso machine but ill have a look into it. Thanks!

  • Had one of these for 2 years. I researched grinders for a very long time and the general feeling was this is the best for the price.

Super fast and powerful with minimal mess. Also great for grinding nuts and other food stuffs.

  • I got this for free with my coffee machine. It's a great grinder but, as with another review i read online, if you stick your ear really close, you can hear a very high pitched noise, like a motherboard crying out in pain.

    • Just listened to mine with ear against it and I only hear a very faint noise. Nothing to worry about.

    • Probably just a voltage regulator or little transformer doing its thing.
      Worry factor = 0.0

  • I wish I could use my $50 Ebay voucher

    • Yeah me too, was gonna buy it for a friend. Tried stacking the codes and it wldnt work. (obviously it works if u dont stack the codes, just sayin)

      • I agree, they always say "Not to be used in conjunction with any other eBay coupon/voucher" but hey it's TGG giving us the ultimately discount not the Ebay. (Thought Ebay provides the venue…)

  • +1

Well i'm in, nothing wrong with my Sunbeam 0480 but lured in by ozbargain yet again

  • Great grinder!

  • I got a mazzer jolly, but at this price I am tempted for kicks.

    • Just read it takes 18+ seconds for a double. I will pass. Jolly does it in 4.

      • 17.4 seconds for me. :)

  • Any chance of the cranberry coloured one on special?

    • Doesn't seem to be on the eBay store. You could try and call them and find out if you could swap it at a store or something.

In my opinion the silver one looks much nicer though.

      • Yeah the swap idea might be an option, I have the cranberry toaster from breville as well, thought I might get it to match…oh well, wen't with the silver as I really wanted this grinder and been waiting for a decent special.

  • My coffee machine has a built in grinder. Would it be of any benefit to manually grind with this and then just pop it into the preground coffee slot?

  • +1

Bought one about a year ago… Amazing, fancy and zero mess…..at this price a steal…

  • Grinder is great but Good guys is hopeless. Bought one on 25th of August with the previous BES920 eBay deal. promised delivery in 5 working days. Coffee Machine arrived…. grinder didnt. rang after 2 days to enquire… They said they'd investigate and call me back. They didnt. I rang back after a further 2 days, no apology and they said end of September. hmmm… Rang on 30th of september, they said 10 more days. rang after 2 weeks (yesterday) they said they needed another week… I will ring again on Friday to see if I'm any closer to actually receiving my grinder.

    • So why neg the deal?

    • I too ordered it back in August as well and I am still waiting. Harassing the store has not helped. Don't suppose yours finally came through?

Thats what you should all be buying. I got one. Amazing

    • Makes sense. Buy a $1000+ coffee machine when you only need a grinder.

  • +1

For anyone having issues with this of grinder not being fine enough for espresso, you can contact breville and they will send you a shim kit free of charge.

The shim kit basically extends the range of how fine you could grind your beans. It comes with two rings for two different settings. With the shim kit you will be able to choke your machine to death if you really wanted to.

Its a shame breville doesn't supply the kit as a standard with the grinder.

  • Just replaced my 8 year old, trusty and reliable EM480 this morning.

    Observations:

No static on the ground bean.
The group head on the Rancillio Silvia fits perfectly.
Out of box, without any additional shim, grinds super fine for espresso.
It is bl00dy quiet compared to the EM480, the parrots no longer freak out … .

Settings are after a bit of tuning (for the bag of beans I used)
    18.2 seconds
    2 shots
    18 grind

    Build quality is really good
Little magnets hold the various catch trays and holders in place
The screen will power off after 30 mins of idle

    Ozbargain! Ozbargain! Ozbargain!
    Spend Spend Spend
    :)

  • Out of stock around Brisbane - took too long in paypal and somebody sniped last one at Browns Plains from my order :(
    With $8 postage = $167.20 less cashback

  • OOS everywhere?

    • Also seeing OOS everywhere. Damn, was about to pull the trigger

      • +1

But it let's you order if you pay the $8 delivery.
…or did I just get lucky because there was stock at my store until I got back from paypal??

I got an email saying Mt Gravatt store would be processing my order. (Which had no stock)

Then they rang me because I'd specified a parcel locker and they don't use Oz Post. (Parcel lockers are a flawed idea!)
Because it's an ebay order they can't change the address, so all they could do is cancel my order!!??
I said excellent, as soon as you cancel more order, stock will go up at your store and I'll specify collect to save postage. She said, oh let me check, oh sorry, we're out of stock. !!??

However, I notice that a couple of brisbane stores have the BES920 in stock (which comes with this grinder). Price is $1499 ($150 more than previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/208682), but still get $299 off with this coupon, and the cashback is now 4% instead of 2.5%, so can get the package for $1190.20 vs $1079.20
I've got it in checkout and just wondering whether it's worth being the best dad in the world on Xmas day, but being the worst husband for who knows how long!!??
Somebody please buy it from Oxley before I do!!!!!!!!!!!

        Dang it - I'm doing it…. if that page hasn't timed out…

        • I just had the same thing happen again… there was stock at Oxley, I paid $1,199.20 on paypal, when I returned it was out of stock. It will let me change to delivery fee of $11.92, but I'm not going to this time - I see it as a last chance to save my marriage.

I can't comment on the BES920 deal because it's closed, but with using this coupon and the 4% cashback, it's possible to get it for $1,211.12 ($1162.68 after cashback) - so only $83.48 more than original deal.

  • Anyone know if DJs/Myer would price match for something like this?
