  • Any bargains spotted on RAT mice and a decent mechanical gaming keyboard? Recommendations appreciated I need a mouse that won't see me dragging or catching my pinky finger, drives me nuts.

  • Thank you OP, this is brilliant!
I am after a replacement HDD for a mac that I bought online. It was DOA & I managed to reset it so now it boots up. 2009 macbook. It came with 2gb RAM & I popped in some more & it now has 5GB RAM. However, it still takes 9 minutes to boot, both before & after the RAM upgrade. I have run HDD tests & the Apple Hardware test & all 'appears to be ok'. The seller was told that the HDD needed to be replaced. There are no clicking noises, but its not the lack of RAM, hence I thought that maybe I should get a new MAC Compatible HDD.

    ANy suggestions anyone!? Thank yoU!

    • +1

      What mac and which year?

Newer ones come with soldered on SSDs as well.

      • +2

I'm working on finding this information , please bear with me, a first time mac user, this is kinda like a hobby/experiment. I do this all the time on pcs, but with a mac, as a virgin, its so different!
I'm still waiting for the About Mac on the desktop, I can't find the serial number anywhere on the body. I followed this (article)[https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201300] so will post back in a few minutes.

        • +1

Try the Mactracker app, one of the options on the left of the app is "This Mac" which should give you all the details you need:

          https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/mactracker/id430255202?mt=12

        • @Stoz: Thank you, but I am looking at a MAc BSOD! What bad luck. I can't seem to find the dam serial ANYWHERE! Why do they make things so difficult? I can post a picture of the bottom. The entire Mac is white in color, the entire back is removable to expose the insides, removing 8 screws. I know that doesn't help much. It came with 2GB of Ram preinstalled. 250Gb HDD. That's all I can tell from the back,

        • +1

@lordra: If you take the rubber underside off the Macbook the serial number is printed just above the RAM slot (there is a barcode for the serial number too).

      • Ok, I have it. Here you go:
        MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009, Oct 20th 2009)
Processor and memory : 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed,2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB; 250GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive.
        Can I swap this out?

        • +1

Yeah you should be able to swap it out with another 2.5in drive. Not sure of height though.

Have you checked if the optical drive is working? If it's too difficult to clone the current HDD, you may need to boot from an OSX DVD.

You'll also need to format the new drive to Mac OSX Extended. Using an OSX DVD, go to disk utilities to do this. Then you can install the OS fresh.

    • Get a windows laptop second hand for like 200.

      • Ta mate, for the comment, but I wanted to experiment with this & see if I can get it to run. I do this on pcs all the time, first time for a mac, so like a project of sorts.

    • Go and check your Macbook model and see if the current HDD is actually removable.

I have already listed some SSD's. The Intel 535 is a good, reliable option with lengthy warranty period.

      • Thank you Scrimshaw! I've seen them, I"m guessing they will all be compatible. I was more inclined towards the 240gb in terms of price per GB, any reason why the intel? I'm not going to be using this mac, probably give it to someone else in the family, light user.

        • +1

Intel has the best track record for reliability (and longer warranty) at a higher price but if that's not what you're after just go with a cheap Crucial bx100 series.

        • @scrimshaw: Thank you for this feedback! That's good information. Crucial BX 100, copy that! Cheers buddy, have learnt a lot by partly hijacking this thread, didn't mean to, my apologies, haha!

      • @scrimshaw: Is there a normal hard drive, or a hybrid that you can recommend for a cheaper price?

  • +1

    any bargain on mechanical keyboard?

opps sorry, this is the list but bargains will need to be evaluated =P

  • After all these years the WD live has not budged in price. Shame, is it still being developed? I heard some apps no longer work for catch up tv

  • I see they jacked up the prices. The 240g ssd was only 100 last time.

    • Most sellers are milking this deal for all it's worth :-/ A Synology NAS unit that was listed at $203 when I posted the link about an hour ago is now selling at $239!

    • Are you talking about the Sandisk Plus 240GB ? For $115?

        • @tomkun01: That's very nice of you & the rep. Good information! Learnt something new today, ta!
So I can do this for anything then. Excellent! Cheers!

  • Is it possible to use the last $50 voucher to get the current offering?

    • Yes, according to another thread post I read

  • Good find. Do you guys have any recommendations for a sound bar to go with my recently purchased Samsung TV?

  • nvm

  • Any graphic card about 200??

  • Looking to get a new HDD for the Ps4, preferably 1tb or 2tb.

Any idea if the WD Elements 2TB USB3.0 portable posted above is able to be removed from its casing?

    Otherwise, anyone got any recommendations?

    • Can try this!

      • Some WD external drives apparently don't use a standard SATA connector on the internal drive so are not suited to being used in a SATA bay.
My son has just set me a quest to find a bigger drive for his 500GB PS4.
So far the drive lordra suggested is an option but it's much cheaper at MSY.
Internal 2TB+ 2.5" SATA drives seem to be a rare thing currently…not sure why.
Add 7200RPM into the mix and you may as well say impossible for now.
Found this at Umart, but it';s a bit pricey http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id…

        • I added the seagate to my basket and it turns out its a little more expensive:
          Total products: $114.00
          Total shipping: $12.31
          Handling fee(Delivery Order Only):$2.53
          Grand Total:$128.84

This one is cheaper but slower WD

Have a look on static ice before you buy.

        • +1

@lordra: True, if you add postage it would make it more expensive.
As I usually pick up on my rounds I don't look at delivery cost unless it's too far for p/u…..my bad.
Definitely get the Seagate over the WD.
          Also a little trick I discovered -
If you want an internal 2TB but don't want to be shafted for it, you can buy the STBX2000401 (or the newer version) from HN or OW and remove the drive from the casing. Thereby giving you a 2TB 5400RPM drive that performs better than the stock 500GB 5400RPM Samsung in the PS4.
Bonus is that you get a USB3 case to put a SATA drive into (PS4 drive I'm looking at you) to use for external backup/transfers etc.

        • @rayski57: Cheers for that info mate. But what is HN or OW?

        • +1

@lordra: Ooops yeah. That's Hardly Normal and OrificeWorks.
Bad news is that the old version is not available anywhere now.
The new version has 1 year warranty (old one was 3yr) and is more difficult to open without cosmetic damage (which would make a warranty claim difficult).
We opted to buy the Hitachi 7K1000 1TB 7200rpm drive for $75 for Umart as an interim (1 year) solution.
In a PS4 this drive outperforms the SSHD that you linked and is cheaper to boot.

  • Are any of the RAM mentioned compatible with ASUS X551MAV-BING-SX391B? specs - http://us.hardware.info/productinfo/235873/asus-x551mav-sx39…

  • scrimshaw, the D7 has now dropped to $160 (wish it hadn't)

  • Seagate Archive 8TB $356

Cheapest I've ever seen is ~$300 so a great deal with the voucher

    • Does anyone know much about 8TB archive drives? I assume they are good for streaming large mkv file (20-30gb) over a server but slow at bulk copying data? as @danielh said

But I'm curious for people who are following the tech, if I don't need a new HDD for around the next 6 months, is it worth purchasing? or should I wait with 16TB SSD's on the way etc. the HDD and SSD prices will fall as capacities get larger? or is all this years away and in the next 12 months we would only expect to see a few more 8TB HDD's by other manufactures and no real change in the storage landscape? therefore this is a good buy now?

      TL:DR

I don't need more HDD space for at least 6 months.

should I wait for bigger and cheaper drives?
      or
is this so cheap it's worth jumping on now?

      • These drives use a different technology than standard hard drives. They're perfect for storing your movies, music, documents and other files BUT will get bad performance if you run computer and programs off of it.

With the voucher it's ~$50 cheaper than it has ever been, but there'll always be more deals if you don't need space right now!

        • Thanks for the advice I think in 6+months the tech will expand, and new deals will come along, worth holding off thanks for the input!

  • Could not see any Intel NUC from Futuonline/SE which is a shame. NUC with 5th gen processor is at a good price on SE website for 499. 519 at ebay, but no pickup.

    • +1

If anyone is interested, SE have added the NUC with click and collect for $518 delivered and it is best price at the moment for this lovely unit. You can use the $100 voucher for RAM or M2 SSD.

  • I currently have two Patriot Signature 8GB Single DDR3-1600 modules in my computer and was looking at adding either another 8Gb or maybe even 16Gb, does anyone have any recommendations?

    • RAM is RAM, the brand doesn't matter. Just make sure your RAM timings match whatever you're going to buy,

      • That is the 1600 number yeah?

        • +1

No, you need to look at the CAS latency. The memory timings are given through a series of numbers; for instance, 4-4-4-8, 5-5-5-15, 7-7-7-21, or 9-9-9-24. These numbers indicate the amount of clock cycles that it takes the memory to perform a certain operation. The smaller the number, the faster the memory. Make sure the stuff you're buying matches what you currently have.

On the RAM packaging you will see something like this

          http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/wp-content/uploads/hs_DDR3Tim…
          or this
          http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/wp-content/uploads/hs_DDR3Tim…

the 4 digit number seperated by dashes is what you look at for timings.

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks. I don't have the packaging any more and from the pictures online it doesn't seem to have that on the ram module.

Actually, reading again what you wrote, would I be correct in saying that my RAM currently has CL of 11 so the new RAM must also have a CL of 11?
