I guess you could but you would be charging yourself 1.95%

        • yep, but Paypal will keep 1.95% each time you use it…

        • -1

@kev98: not to mention the money would be classed as income so he'd have to pay tax on it

        • +1

@kev98: It is better rate than cash advance.

        • @Agret: BHow does this compare to accepting CC like AM Ex, Mastercard, Visa etc

        • +1

          i wouldnt bother.
ive used this and the tap and go version quite frequently for my webstores only.

generally with paypal premier/business you'd get clustered with ato.
so any income generated over $10k ato has the right to check your account which i usually get a email about it per financial year.

not sure if you could do it once in a while as a personal thing. but i'd really hate it if ato clustered your own cc as a income just to make some points?

        • @cminez:

Could this be used as a cash advance? These rates are a lot less than normal cash advance rates

        • +1

@keverns: Surely the payment charged from your credit card's point of view would then be viewed as an expense, therefore negating any 'income' earnt on the paypal account…

        • @Agret:

Definitely not income. It is just a funds transfer

        • @sk0tty:

possible… wouldnt have a clue how ato would view this as. if you dont have a abn you cant negate it?

    • +9

This device essentially allows you to accept credit payments and have the payments transferred to your PayPal account. You do, however, need to have the Paypal account setup to accept PayPal Here.

It is essentially for small merchants and individuals want to have the ability to accept credit card payments. However, there are a few things to note:

      • The reason why this particular model is heavily discounted is because a new model is now available (which supports Paywave and has a display)
      • You will need a smartphone or a tablet with bluetooth support and you actually key in the amount on the smartphone / tablet
      • This particular model requires either PIN or signature. Without a display on the device (other than some LED notification lights), you actually need to show the smartphone / tablet to the "customer" so he/she can see the actual amount. That's not really ideal. The newer model is better as it has a display on the device.
      • While you could change the linked smartphone / tablet. Every time you do that, you have to re-setup and re-link again (so it is best to have only one device linked to it).

You can use it to charge your own credit card. It could come in handy if you have a prepaid credit card about to expire, you can use it to transfer the remaining credit to your Paypal, though Paypal would charge the 1.95%.

The newer/latest model is definitely better. OfficeWorks want to clear these old ones. It is a good toy at $29 I guess.

      • Do you know if a Paypal business account is needed to run this? I saw this in the Q&A

Once you have a Pay Pal Business Account the next step is to apply for PayPal Here. This can be done through the following link. https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/how-to-use-paypal-hereā€¦
Once you have your device you will be able to accept payments from clients.

        • I have a Paypal Premier Account, essentially like a business account but for individuals.

It is best that you actually sign up for PayPal Here first before you purchase this device. If you cannot sign up successfully, then there is no point buying it. I signed up first before purchasing the device (few months ago). If you are a small merchant or intend to use it on a regular basis, the new PayPal Here Tap and Go is definitely better.

        • @netsurfer: Thanks for the info. Do you know if there are any cost involved in upgrading to premier or business accounts? And any ongoing fees? I tried to search on their site but can't really find anything about the fee.

        • @Maki: With a premier account, PayPal charges you every time an payment is accepted whereas I "think" personal account gets 5(?) free payment transactions a year? I think with a personal account, you need to manually accept payments whereas with a premier or business account, payments are automatically accepted.

A premier account does not have ongoing fee (but PayPal essentially charges you more per transaction). Cannot comment on business accounts (don't have one) - I am guessing there is a monthly fee because Paypal offers quite a few handy additional services for business accounts.

  • +1

Finally at a price which it should always have been.

    • +12

should be free because of the fee's they charge

      • Agreed tuzii!!

        • -4

The Paywave device cannot be free, if it was it might be construed they are coercing customers to turn their phones into servers to pump up personally identifiable information (geo-locations, what you buy/sell, what is returned, when and with whom you trade, how much you spend/receive… linked with your call and message history, demographic, age, address, family, address book contact details, logins, IMEI, device name, OS and software, other installed apps, other running apps, username, previous geo-locational history… none of this can be slurped for free if someone can accuse a mob this size of collecting what is not theirs, let alone what they reasonably need to provide a payment service and store it forever in places that are always open to access by unknowns.

Now do you see why the iPhone isn't free?

      • deleted - answer found below

  • +1

    Seriously iPhone not included???

    • nope. BWAHAHAHAHAHA

    • But it doesn't say credit card not included ;)

  • +7

Could be useful for next time you need to split the bill at dinner, accept payments from your colleagues when the counter doesn't do split bills

    • jolly good idea!

      • Don't forget the 2% increase to cover paypal fees

    • Actually a good idea… Accept payment from friends/colleagues, asborb 1.95% fees, pocket 3 points per dollar with Velocity Platinum…

    • Er - you do realise that was one of the original reasons PayPal was started!

    • Don't forget the 1.95% fee.

      • +1

Would cop the $1-2, over the hassle of chasing up people for the next week

  • The new MUST HAVE toy for every ozbargainer !

  • -4

So the picture says iPhone not included but it doesn't say credit card not included lololol

  • +1

What do I do with this device? Is it only used for businesses?

    • +1

small businesses only really. larger ones will probably get a better deal from the banks.

  • +1

just letting you guys know it is already available online for $29, I've already placed an order for collection in store

    • thanks - deal updated :)

  • +2

What are all you guys selling that requires you to own one of these……??

I tend to buy stuff as seen on ozbargain, not sell stuff.

  • Christmas gift sorted out.

    • +1

Instead of gifts or money in a card…..you can just charge the rellies for coming round.!!

  • +5

They must be clearing the old one. The new one has

    Accept contactless payments
Accept Tap and Go payments, Chip and PIN and swipe card payments
Accept MasterCard and Visa, credit and debit card payments
Connect via Bluetooth to the PayPal Here app available on iPhone, iPad and most Android devices

Anyway, good deal and I bought one using PayPal.

    • I bought one using PayPal.

      Oh, the irony.

      • I did the same thing and thought the same thing :-)

    • Most importantly it show the amount that will be charged so you don't have to keep showing your phone for every god damn transaction which is extremely inconvenient & impractical

Also as you have to keep showing your phone to them you risk your phone to be stolen if you live in 3rd world country

  • That is very cheap. Yes, no tap n go but still very handy to have.

  • -1

Imagine what happen when you carry this when you got mugged

"ok, that would be 100 billion dollar" *proceed to do dr.evil's pinky finger

  • is there any sort of buyer protection if you pay using this?

  • ok what are the monthly fees for this account, and commission rates??

was just told that they are more expensive compared to CBA CC payments.

    • No monthly fees or hidden costs from what the web site says, but there are other fees attached in using it though. Probably good for a small business.

1.95% for transactions through the card reader
      1.95% for PayPal check-in payments
2.6% + $0.30 for invoices sent through the app
      2.9% + $0.30 for keyed-in card payments
No fee for recording cash payments

      • Kinda expensive, CBA is 1.4%

        thanks!

        • +1

Yeah a bit pricey. I see quite a few businesses now, adding a surcharge fee if you wish to use the credit facility. I think that's fair enough as long as the customer is told up front and aware of it. I wouldn't want to be absorbing all these fees either.

  • +3

Re points: while they don't accept Amex on the reader, pretty sure if you have this, you can also accept payment from credit card funded PayPal accounts, for the same 1.95%.

Therefore, you can get 1.5 points per dollar (1.725 if redeemed with 15% bonus like now with Velocity) for 1.95%.

Given you can fly return to Europe in business class with Etihad for 250k Velocity points, you could pay yourself (or a relative) $145k, which would cost $2.8k in merchant fees, and get an airfare that's worth probably $7-8k for about $200 taxes, so $3k all up.

I'd go there, so long as PayPal or the banks aren't liable to crack down on it.

    • Great math- thanks for sharing!

However given that they will refuse a $145k transacticon, what sequence of transacticons made within a period of say 75 years would get my points balance to a level that would support the purchase of an Int'l ticket?

And would any of my points forfeit in that time?

      • Not with the banks AFAIK. In any case, you can split it over the course of a year. $12k per month. Just need to make sure your tax affairs are in order, as it could easily raise eyebrows at the ATO.

        • PayPal will see the total and the frequency of Transactions, then freeze the account or refuse to process on the terminal or worse, cancel/refund later on.

They see what they do as micro-payments to cover peasant needs- anything else is an abuse and can be referred to in the Ts&Cs as being unacceptable use.

Indeed, after asking help from the ATO, (it is their duty to self report) they may even go further and refer you for possible terror financing and get you reported you for rendition or Thought Control 2.0

this opens up a whole new world to the scammers. Kudos Paypal for convincing the financial institutions to come on board.
I realise Paypay bare the risk but if my credit card is siphoned - I wont be contacting Paypal first.

    • Please explain your thesis.

    • Have you ever sold anything online? As in a business where you have consistent and sizeable turnover? There are already plenty of scammers out there. These devices change nothing.

      • … things like this make it worse than being a CC merchant. Old and new FinTechs throw the transactional diligence processes at others while writing Ts&Cs to cover every new risk with one fire blanket; meaning less protection and more onus on the paying actors rather than the miscreants.

  • +1
    1. Modern day peasant buys an item
    2. Old scrooge accepts using PayPal touch
    3. Corporation steals both their monies (citing the usual grab bag of excuses in the Ts&Cs neither of them read)
    4. Government+Dog steals both their data (No Ts&Cs make this acceptable in any 'society', but no-one reads law either)
    5. Corporation and Organised Crime steal (The influentials) the stolen data stored by Gov+Dog.
    6. Gov+Corp+OrgCrime+Dog duplicate the data and make it public, eventually all else is lost to unknown, unexpected and extraordinary third-party forces and the frequent flyer points that motivated the Modern day Peasant and Old Scrooge are devalued against inflation and other indexes manipulated by the Influentials before they can be acrued and used (due to unexpected limitations in their Terms of Use).

Ahhh, the march of technology and progress… lifting all things into enlightenment.

  • I ordered one for click and collect about an hour ago and I have already been refunded by paypal and when I check my officeworks account it says- "Order Status: Rejected".

Did this happen to anyone else?

    • Same here

    • I just picked mine up from Officeworks QV Melbourne 30 minutes ago.

  • So, the only difference between the old and new model is the paywave function?

  • Everyday Price, so no need to rush!

  • +1

A big problem with PayPal here is that the device that you're entering your PIN on does not show the total that you are being billed.

It is trivial for someone with two phones to bill you more and show you the screen of the cheaper phone. This is s fail in the design.

    • can't agree more

      • +1

        How would that happen though?

Who is going to work two phones in front of a customer. Even if you hid the other phone it's all going to look really bad either way. Unless of course you have an awesome sleight of hand technique.

I just don't see this happening. If they were successful, the card owner could easily report you and have your account frozen immediately. Sounds like too much effort even for an idiot.

        • could be two persons, bluetooth range is pretty good
you can also make it standby

          buyer's piece of mind
too much hassle to check with credit card statement etc
they will just avoid the transaction

in any case for $29, nothing can go wrong lol

        • Two cashiers, or someone in the back could easily work another phone. They could also show you a screen-shot of another lower priced transaction.

The device you are entering the PIN on should show you the total, same as old credit card slips where you sign below the total, not a blank form.

You are correct that PayPal may freeze your account if done too often.

        • @RedHab: But what if the customer asks for an sms or email receipt on the spot. Then how?

I still don't see this ever happening. Just too much work and too many steps even for the smartest of criminals to pull it off.

  • Great price , thanks OP. But as hard as I try, I still can't come up with a reason to get this :/

    • +1

I think it's really only going to get some use if you use it for business to offer credit card as an option when out and about.

For personal use, probably not much point unless you are a high volume ebay seller and want to offer credit card payment for COD purchases as an option for buyers. That said, buyers mostly pay cash when paying on pickup.

  • Would there be a way for the fee to be charged to you rather then the client? is this cheaper for a business then an eftpos machine?

  • +1

I have a small business and this seems expensive, I already use a EFTPOS mobile machine from NAB and the fees are really good, like a debit card is just 20 cents.

    • What are your credit card fees per chance? I've heard of NAB charging small businesses 2.6% + flagfall Visa/MC!

      • +2

Whole different fees for different account but Visa/MC charge .64% fee and the bank charges range from 0.004% to 1.32%, normal credit card is roughly 0.33%
Most number of transactions I have is for "MC DOM DR Paypass" which is $0.055

        My machine is tap&Go/Paypass :)

        • So PayPass costs less than chip and pin, even the same card?

Also, does that mean the most you'll pay is 1.96% for a Visa/MC (presumably a prestige card)?

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:Here's some of the fees listed on their web page .

1.95% for transactions through the card reader
          1.95% for PayPal check-in payments
2.6% + $0.30 for invoices sent through the app
          2.9% + $0.30 for keyed-in card payments
No fee for recording cash payments

  • +2

So, according to my understanding of Paypal, it would occur 1.95% fee of using the device + a regular 3%~ Paypal transaction fee from the business user + freeze your funds in your account without any alerts for 6 month if there are risks about the transactions you or your customers made?

  • What do fellow ozbargainer's think about the stock levels on these bad boys ?? I wonder if they will re-stock ?

  • +5

We may start to see beggers on the street will have one next to them so they won't miss out any opportunities.

    • made my day bro
I'll go try give them one for market research "Beggers - Now Accept Credit Card"

    • & you can track the transaction in case if they ask for more.
OR ask for refund if they buy liquor / drug

  • No tap and go

  • Thanks OP! Was contemplating getting one last week but I'm glad I waited.

  • +1

I'd like to know who in their right mind would swipe their credit card into a toy looking POS gadget? I wouldn't trust this even behind a reputable merchants counter.

What fallback do you have when the Bank says 'sorry but you used your credit card at an unauthorized terminal'.

McDonalds EFT merchant terminals were breached and they looked secure enough.

  • -1

I reckon this one is quite bulky and not practical nor portable. Try this one, It's more portable

Also notice that the new edition will show the amount charged. This one have no amount indicator which is very impractical.

  • Hi everyone,

Can I please ask for an advice on this for those who already have business/premier account?

Would you recommend having 2 paypal accounts and separate the Personal and Business/Premier account (2 login IDs)? Or would you rather upgrade the personal account?

When I read the T&C, I notice once I upgraded the personal account, the business account is subject to things like reversals and etc.
