Microsoft Lumia 950 (XL Only) - $659 on eBay (Hkbns)

560

Stumbled across this incredibly cheap pricing in an eBay store - well below the $1129 RRP. Nowhere else seems to be offering this pricing as of yet (but to be fair it was only released 2 weeks ago).

But if you're in the market for a flagship with Continuum and can't wait for the Surface Phone, this is it.

Black version: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Lumia-950-XL-Black-32GB…

White version: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Lumia-950-XL-White-32GB…

That's all for my first post, thanks!

It's Verge, their articles has running theme of "Everything non-Apple is shit"; Journalistic objectivity is absent at best in their articles.

I could see what they are trying to say. Some of the stuff they are saying have valid points. Some of the things they are saying are simply wrong (i.e. Windows 10 mobile as a reboot I think is BS for example and MS apps disappearing is more of things being merged with one another by MS I think) though.

        • +14

@ideasman: I honestly don't understand your point. So I comment on the validity of the article you've brought up and you talk about why you think iPhone is so great, on a Windows phone deal no less.

        • +11

@ideasman: what a surprise! … this is a phone aimed at the enterprise/business. we've been using windows mobiles for years and years at our work place they do the job and are cheap for the features they provide. Get your head out of the iCloud the world doesn't revolve around the 1/4 eaten apple .. sounds about right with the articles you read .. god forbid someone has a positive thing to say about other products.

        • -4

          @scud70:
"aimed at enterprise/business" but iPhone has a better MS office suite?

        • @ideasman: also read that i the verge?

        • -1

          @Oversimplified:

the link to the article was to hopefully advise potential fence sitters about the current state of windows phone before jumping on this deal.

i haven't purchased a phone for at least 5 years (work provides me with whatever i request) but if i was going to drop over 500 bux on a phone i'd want to have a bunch of developer support behind it and want to know it'll last me 2 years.

do enterprise management lurk through oz bargains for deals?

i'm not loyal to any one platform - i just pick whichever one is best at time of request.

          @ideasman:I am using a iPhone 6s and I hate it…….

I have in the past used Nokia the 1020, 930 and loved it. The MS product range were not updated for a long time so I moved to Samsung S6 Edge and it is awesome (still own it) work only supports iPhone hence I had to move to it and I dont like it. Pics on iPhone are not even comparable to my S6.

But to bring things back to perspective, what we hate or like has got nothing to do with the deal. For me this is a great deal if I am in market for a phone. it provides options and people can then select based on the choices they have and not the noise.

          Have a good day.

          Cheers.
Thanks to OZB I saved tons of money on stuff that I dont think I need :)

        • @Bgaheer:

Thats cool - if you are a windows mobile lover, you know what you're getting yourself into. As I said - for fence sitters (ie people who are unsure whether windows mobile an 'upgrade' from their current iphone or android) it's good to know that the majority of their favorite apps may not be available when switching.

I do find it interesting that you find the pics not comparable whereas when i google 'S6 vs 6S camera', the whole first page of results say they're two of the closest cameras in current smartphones.

          When i went from a 4S to a 5S the pics weren't comparable. 5S to 6S - difference is pretty meh.

        • @ideasman: Mate I have taken pic with both my phones S6 and 6s, the 6s has problems - blurry picture and if you run both the phones to capture slow motion video during evening time - the 6s video flickers like the monitors on the TV.

On seperate note: I know we all complain about the lack of apps on Windows. I had it for a year and never I had issue with not having the app that I need. The best camera in a phone is my Nokia 1020 and Microsoft/Nokia always had the best cameras.

        • +1

          @Bgaheer:

maybe your phone is faulty? my 6s has had zero problems taking photos of my 18 month old and if you know anything about kids - they barely sit still long enough for a photo.

slo-mo has been fine too - recorded a bunch of the little guy with the hose on the weekend. might be due to the fact that the iphone records at 240fps and the 6s can only do 120.

either way- if you are having the issues mentioned you might need to get it checked out.

        • @ideasman: My phone is ok as similar issues are with other iphones too. Try slomo in the evening inside and check the screen you will see flickering.

        • @Bgaheer:

lol if you record inside with the lights on you'll get flickering. it's just physics.

lights flicker at 50hz (or 50 times a second) which you can't see. when you record at 240fps and then playback at 25fps - the lights will appear to flicker ~5 times per second. Same thing when you try record a TV with a camera.

welcome to the wonderful world of slomo video. if it bothers you - drop the iphone back to 120fps to match the samsung.

        • @ideasman: Same lighting and the Samsung S6 wont flicker and both are at 120fps …

    • -5

I dont know why you got so many negative feedback while you are expressing your own feeling.
Btw, i totally agree with you. Windows mobile is far behind comparing Android.

      • -6

        fanboys.

android has a great developer support and a ton of decent apps.

      • +6

The same reason I'd expect someone to get negged to oblivion if they jumped on a deal on Apple products and told everyone they were fanboys. It's OzBargain, not OzOpinion.

If you're not interested in the product, move on. If you want to start a "my platform is best" war, there are plenty of places on the net to do it.

        • +1

Agree. It's nice that phones elicit such strong loyalty in people, but honestly it's like going to a maccas free soft serve thread and going "soft serves suck - by the way, Grill'd has this awesome deal on quinoa salads".

        • My shi* is on promotion.
          It is now$0.1(was$10)

Would you give my post a positive vote?

        • +2

@ak47992: That is the crappiest analogy I have heard. Some people (including myself) do want this phone and would pay full price, but discounted is a bargain.

        • @rabbit71:
May be someone like my shi*.

I think we have responsibility to let people know what kinds of products are worth to buy.

          For example:
          TV 1: 50hz refresh rate : $500(was$1000)
          TV 2: 100hz refresh rate : $600(was$1100)

TV2 is more worth to buy than TV1.

We are just warning peopel that lumia may not as good as they think.
I think it is always good for someone challenging a product. It provides both advantages and disadvantages views on the item.
Similar to cnet review, including “the good” and “the bad”.

        • +1

          @ak47992:

Sorry, I have my premium sources already.
          http://shitsenders.com/

Fanboys will be fanboys. I'm of the opinion they should be ignored. Buy the products you want to buy. Most of ozb is intelligent enough to do thorough research. If they want advice they'll ask for it - on the forum.

Great price, thanks for the share OP - ordered!

  • Can Microsoft Sydney price beat LOL as much as i need one though… I need the dual sim, which Oz once again misses out on.

  • Too expensive

  • +4

My Skeptical radar is going off a bit here. The phone is not out yet in Hong Kong officially and I cannot find any grey imports going through HK as well at this stage (may change in a week or so). Even in the US, it is selling for $699 USD, I find it hard to believe they can do this price even if the mark up is good. The seller looks like they are into selling photography equipment as well.

Caveat Emptor I think. Too many fake phones floating around these days and if they price is too good to be true, then it probably is.

Happy to be proven wrong and good luck if it is real for this price.

    • +4

I agree it smells fishy, but why would anyone be stupid enough to knockoff a WP ? You would sell more blackberry knockoffs than WP.

      • Cheap Android + a Windows Launcher / Skin is very probable and have been seen all around. I'm not too sure if I'd personally risk it.

        • +1

Surely PayPal would side with the buyer with this case though, it pretty plainly states it is, or rather, should be.

  • Price is way too good. I wonder where the stock is coming from, and if its going to come with an Australian charger.

    • Erm, "Windows Phone" is an OS, not a device.

    • +1

Why so negative and bias, this phone itself is premium built with quality and that is a fact, you don't like the OS doesn't mean the phone is mid to low end product.

Liking the OS is a personal flavour and very subjective. Keep your mind open and do not judge by feelings.

      • +1

I'm a windows phone user and I like my windows phone but I don't like certain apps being missing.

I think the rrp of these new windows phones is too high especially when they are almost the same price as an iphone. The iphone has app support and windows phone sadly doesn't (but it is improving slowly). Therefore it seems silly to price flagship windows phone the same as an iphone due to the app limitations.

  • +2

Something suss. Nearly half the normal price and no one else selling grey market Hong Kong versions.

  • +2

I'm guessing price error… regular price is about $650 USD but it's been incorrectly priced in AUD

  • +1

Love this phone but will wait for price drop even more hope like less than $500.

  • That's an amazing price. It does seem fishy, but their feedback is really good. And Paypal will cover fake devices anyway in most cases. very tempting.

  • +2

Hmm thinking of swapping my S6 Edge for this… Very tempting at that price.

    • +2

Play with one first before switching. You'll get through the windows phone OS within 1hr.

      • But then I won't save $500! Conundrum!

        • +3

Hey I've got this genuine Staedtler HB pencil sitting here. I'd normally want to sell it for $10,000 but for you I'll give you a special price of $5,000. That's a $5,000 saving! You interested?

          @The Land of Smeg:
Lisa, I'd like to buy your Rock.

  • +2

Thank you for posting, this one is a beast phone.

  • Anyone enquire whether this is a genuine product or a price error?

    • I'd assume it's a genuine price. I purchased the Nokia 1020 for almost half retail from eBay when that was first released.

  • +3

Looking at the forum threads, these phones have massive battery drain issues, most likely due to the OS. It discharges at ~2% an hour idle.

    • ouch! where you see this?

  • most likely due to thermonuclear war…. s810 steer clear

  • good phone but battery issue with Win10 OS

  • +11

To the people complaining about getting 'negs' after slagging off the potential deal, the negs are because your comments are as fanboys rather than as people putting forward an informed opinion or adding anything constructive to the post replies or to whether this is genuinely a bargain price.

These opinions are expected on OzB, but so are the negs that follow from people who have better informed opinions and/or something valid to add to the conversation and/ or are fanboys of the OS that you are making the comments about (or shopping chain/ telco/ chocolate/ car/ religion etc. if making comments as a fanboy of something else).

I switched from a Lumia 1020 running W10M (latest preview version) to a Galaxy S6 Edge running Android 5.1.1 around a month ago.

For a 3 weeks recently I also used my old iPhone 4 whilst in NYC, and then for about 2 weeks used a loan iPhone 5 from my telco on return to Aus (both running the most recent iOS available for those phones).

As such, I have a slightly better informed opinion than an outsider who is married to their OS and won't consider alternatives, though it is still just a personal opinion and preference.

If the above price was available a month ago AND I had been able to borrow a recent Android to test out and compare, I would have stayed with W10M and gone with a Lumia 950 or 950XL. This is partly because I am used to the OS (even with my recent forays back to iOS land and Android), but also because I think it is a better OS overall. I'm happy to go into the reasons why I liked W10M and the reasons I switched from it if questioned.

If someone in Melbourne buys one of the above phones (and they are legit and keep it in near-perfect condition), and doesn't enjoy it, I would potentially be happy to swap for my near-perfect condition Galaxy S6 Edge, 128GB, black-blue (or whatever Samsung call the colour).

    • might take you up on that

  • +2

Just pulled the trigger and bought one. Too cheap not to take a risk.

  • Good deal. One question: Does it work with myriad of Telstra frequencies?
    Thanks

  • Oh no out of stock

    • +2

I got in when there was 4 left.

They still have white ones if you're not fussy on colour.

      • Oops. Thank you. Just bough a white one instead. Didn't realise there were two colours

  • There are still 8 White ones as of this post.

  • Yup, that Out of Stock flag was a little hasty!

    • Sorry about that. 4 White ones left.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

  • dame you OZbragain!!

They've just sent me a refund and said that "We didn't have any to sell". Sounds like a load of crap and they've stuffed the price up, wish they'd just tell the truth.

  • Just got a message from the seller. System screw up. Refund.

Also got a PayPal email confirming the refund.

    Oh wells..

  • New message from: hkbns-australia:

  • Bought one and got same thing :( Ah well, nothing ventured, nothing gained!
