Unlocked Apple iPhone 8GB 3G

Not sure if this is a great deal, so you decide :) It's $719 in the Apple Store.

Every iPhone purchase today comes with a free accessory!

mod: edited link to directly link. Please don't use URL shorteners.

Edit: From my personal experience, Apple refurbs have new batteries and outter shells, so they are "as new".

EDIT: WArning, read comments below: "The phone is not factory unlocked. It has, low and behold, cydia and ultrasnow installed already."

  • 6 month warranty and a 3G (as opposed to 3GS)?

Hmm. Might be technically better than the competitors, but not something I'd want to spend $550 on.

  • +2

For all the impulse buyers… keep in mind that it's the 3G older model and not the newer 3GS model… and with yet another with the new one coming out in a few months, this model risks being seen as obsolete very rapidly.

    • As far as I'm aware there is no 8GB 3GS anyway, only a 16 and 32gig ones. If so then this isn't sooo bad compared to the $720 new one…especially for those that dont want to play games.

Still I'd personally wait until the new releases but for those in the market now its not a bad buy.

The condition item is refurbished then it's not a great deal if you compare with this NEW UNLOCKED APPLE iPHONE 3G 8GB GSM JAILBROKEN BLACK. (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-UNLOCKED-APPLE-iPHONE-3G-8GB-GSM-…) for AU $599 free shipping.

    • +4

Hmmm, lets see FACTORY UNLOCKED ie this deal, versus a LOCKED phone on ebay that pretty much anyone that can google "UNLOCK iPhone" can unlock, from the ebay listing:

Do NOT update the firmware or OS as this will destroy the unlocked software and lock the phone.

So basically next time you update the OS you're screwed.

No saying this deal is fantastic, but the your comparison deal is simply misleading.

      • -3

You do know that all Australian iPhones can be factory unlocked right? So some on eBay will be.

Plus, to correct you, the fw can be updated when using an unoffical unlock, just using pwnage tool rather than iTunes so as basebane is maintained.

        • +1

Yes but did you check the deal that it was being compared to? $599 Jailbroken from Hong Kong. So the comment by Blinkybill was accurate. And will all future unlocks be retained if the software gets updated, and warranty on the Hong Kong phone would be problematic. cost to ship back etc etc

          • -1

@[Deactivated]: Which is exactly why I said "So some on eBay will be.", did not say that exact example.

            • @PainToad: And BlinkyBill was comparing it too that specific ebay deal, not ebay in general.

        • Option One: Everytime apple updates the OS (including point releases) you need to wait for the iPhone Dev team to catch up. Then you need to read and research what the next series of steps are required in the Apple vs Dev team cat and mouse game blah blah blah blah.

Option two: Simply click update in iTunes.

Yes I really can see how Option One is appealing.

I went from having a factory unlocked iPhone to a soft unlocked iPhone and the former is much preferred as you really spend more time using the phone than looking for the next set of workarounds.

Not really a good deal… for a 2nd hand, older generation iphone… this is probably as much as they can charge for it… certainly not cheap by any means

  • +1

    This is an absolute rip-off.

  • If you are buying this on impulse then chances are you already have a good phone. In that case youre probably better off going for an Ipod touch.

  • -1

Sorry I dont think its a good deal.

  • Didn't realised it was a refurb. That said, when I dropped my 3G S in the loo, I was given a refurb and they are pristine. New battery and new shell. No one would ever know it's a refurb. I think it's a decent deal.

    • +3

There is a difference between Apple refurbs and refurbs by these guys…

I bought refurb ipods on 1-day and they were scratched up and packed up in a dodgy way

      • And, in contrast (which I'm sure is what you were getting at!), Apple refurbs likely throw a completely new case on them after being fixed.

  • Its about $50 better than ebay and you get warranty from a Australian store (as opposed to Hong Kong etc). And its factory unlocked. It is a good deal.

W ether its a good idea spending that sort of money when a new model is due out in June is a different question, and something you have decided for yourself.

    No MMS

    • +4

iPhone has had MMS since version 3.
It's the original iPhone 2G that "can't" have MMS

  • -2

I don't think it's a very good deal, even unlocked, at this price.

  • -3

"Edit: From my personal experience, Apple refurbs have new batteries and outter shells, so they are “as new”."
But this is NOT a offical Apple refurb.

    • +3

Sorry to correct you again - guess I'm being a "pain".

But did you look at this site? on the specs panel on the side is the following

      Manufacturer: Apple
      Condition: Apple Factory Refurbished
      Warranty: 6 Months Manafacturers
      Model: iPhone 8GB……

Do you have some other knowledge about this - can you share it? BTW I am NOT the mod who put the comment in the heading.

      • +2

Sure do, all official Apple refurbs come with 12 month warrenty, not 6. 1saleday are flat out lying.

        • +1

These iPhones are Factory Refurbished by Apple. They come with a full Manufacturers 12 month Warranty.
They come in the Full Apple packaging.

          • @peshmo: o so now you've changed it to say 12 months. Suspicious much? I've NEVER heard of Apple allowing others to sell their refurbs, would love to know how you managed to score this agreement.

To me it sounds like your selling ex-corporate devices some company was off loading.

            • @PainToad: Stock is directly from Apple. Reason for change was due to some negotiation on the warranty.

              • @peshmo: Whats to negotiate? Apple has been giving 12 months warranty on refurbs since the dawn of time…

                • -1

@WhiteEvo6: Not on iPhones. They NEVER sell refurbished iPhones. Through little Johnny down the street or themselves

        • this is the main thing

  • Good deal to replace a damaged 3G.

    • +1

Take your phone to Apple. they will replace it with a brand new phone, for $250.

      • Yep they did that for my water damages 16GB 3GS, $250 and they gave me a new one with my existing warranty.

  • I think this is a good deal it's says it's a official apple refurbish. I see most these negs are based on peoe not reading the description and not knowing the features. Don't compare to eBay cause so many of them are dodge on there they will work till the owner rings and says he got his phone stolen then it gets lock and he claims insurance while keeping ur money

  • IMO this is not a good deal

  • take a damaged 3g to the apple store, exchange the damaged/broken phone plus $250 for a refurbished 3g. I've done it twice in the last 12 months.

    • +1

mate, a bit clumsy are we?

    • I managed to score a new replacement for that price, did u retain your original warranty?

  • Google nexus one.is.600 $ much better than this phone

      • -1

When iPhones first arrived, it was many, many consumers' first smartphone. It made them affordable to the masses (despite the alternatives). Furthermore, it's made by Apple, which tends to have somewhat of a blind cult-following.

In contrast, the n1 was barely marketed, isn't generally available worldwide (without having to go through annoying routes), and I'd venture as far to say that if you asked your friends/neighbours, they probably haven't even heard of it.

Total sales don't always reflect what's good vs. what's bad. That's one shortcoming of the free market. :(

  • Just received mine.
The phone is not factory unlocked. It has, low and behold, cydia and ultrasnow installed already.
It is also not from Australia. It can with a US (I think) plug and a cheap adapter.

    • Looking closer they are AT&T phones. They seem refurbished perfectly. Nice new covers etc…
I have emailed asking for a full refund or a generous partial refund to keep it.
I have grave concerns about the warranty now. I am guessing I cannot take it into an apple store, firstl cos it's American stock, and secondly because it is jailbroken.

  • i just received mine, and was not unlocked at all!!!
