      Nice.

Happy customer here - saw a GP in Spain and upon my return made a claim. Took only 3 working days to receive the payment!

    • +1

What did you claim? And what did they ask you? Thanks.

      • Claimed visit to gp which was about Eur70, also claimed Eur 6 worth of meds (all up nearly the cost of my insurance). Just had to email them receipts, doctors report, cc statements, itinerary and claim form. Would suggest saving a copy of your certificate of currency in an easily accessible place before calling for medical assistance. They will provide you with options and clarify docs required to make claim.

        • Ok thanks, i am travelling to Japan, hopefully there is no difficulty with the language.

        • @divious: Just to clarify - the helpline is Aus based.

  • Wow so this is insurance you can claim AFTER your trip?
    Wicked.

    • +3

That's how they all are. I thought.

      • The claim is for a medical visit during my trip. You can make your claim after you return.

  • You bloody bewdy. USA insurance being booked. Thanks mate.

  • Only works for those under 80 year olds. Tough but that is how profit accrues.

  • Insurance is underwritten by cover more. Who in my opinion are excellent for looking after their customers.

  • +9

Southern Cross Travel Insurance still ended up better for me. We are a couple (using promo 'WOW') travelling through Vietnam, Dubai & USA for 5 months. SCTI covered more and cost less.

I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just got onto them through OzBargains and love it.

    • -5

got onto them through OzBargains and love it

Who is this ozbargains you speak of?

      • The same as Myers, Safeways, people that say fink as think or arcs/asks

        • Prehaps.

        • your examples are very pacific

@peterw1: Inflation is out of control. It use to be OzBargain, but now it's OzBargains and soon it will be OzBargain^3

p.s Math jokes are lame, but I had nothing else.

I just did 4 quotes for a 3 week trip to Japan (2 adults under 40) and scti is the cheapest by ~$13

      AusPost $204.80
TID $189 (free TID travel money card)
      Scti $175.50
Woolies $188.21 (free global roaming sim + 10mb)

All of these are the discount prices after codes used and on the face of it, cover was pretty much around the same (comprehensive).

AusPost was $256 before discount, not competitive at all.

      • +1

Post has $0 access for all claim but SCTI only has $0 access for medical claim.

I purchased SCTI yesterday for my travel but still thinking if I should switch to Post

        • +1

I'm not sure what you mean because AusPost charge an extra ~$21 to reduce the excess to $0 (from $100).

So the total for me is then $225.60

Just about all of them have this as an option & I believe that none by default have a $0 excess, if it is then it's built in to the cost somewhere.

You need to be careful comparing insurances and I wouldn't be too quick to cancel & change before comparing carefully.

        • You could take a bet both ways and buy both.

      • Can u give the code for SCTI plz. Also, is there an excess for each claim with them?

        • It's mentioned above by Josh.straw84

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236567#comment-3496496

          wow

It's not such a simple question to ask about "excess". Each company has items that attract an excess but all of them will also have items with no excess.

All of them give the option to pay more upfront to reduce/remove the excess to $0

        • @nismo: What I liked about SCTI was the positive reviews of those who used it. I Googled for about an hour and didn't find a lot of complaints, but I did find heaps of positive reviews.

      • Try Insure and Go, always found them to be the cheapest (also get cashback from pricepal)

    • Might be time to repost the SCTI deal again.

  • +2

    Considering the reviews-

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/australia-post-travel-insu…

I would do your due diligence before purchasing the product and read the PDS. YMMV.

    • +1

Yeah not many good reviews, quite a few bad ones.

In the end, TID and SCTI (mentioned above) both look good, high volume of good reviews.

    • Some of those poor reviews look a little convoluted. Things about start dates and linking claims to new policies. I obtained really cheap cover from them for year round world travel insurance. There was no better price when I paid a while back. And the policy seemed adequate. They haven't been around or prominent too long. I'm still confident I'll be catered for adequately.

    • Reading the PDS is a good point but 99% of insurance policy online reviews are going to be left by people who got burned.

      • +1

But that is the only way (reading reviews from different places) to see how the company acts when you actually need to claim.

  • +1

Worked out the same cost as I bought recently through Woolworths.

  • +1

is this the same cover as those credit cards which offer free travel insurance?

  • SCTI = $222, AusPost = $298 including discount.
One has to arcsk if they are being too pacific when quoting

  • planning for an India, Tibet, Kathmandu trip in Jul-Aug - is this worth taking?

    SCTI - $185 (2 ADULTS)
    AusPost - $ 176
    TID - $273

Unsure which one to go with

    • +1

Compare what they cover & what is important to you.

I go OS once per year and up until this year always went with TID, but with others around the same price or cheaper and covering either the same amount or enough for me, I don't think I'll pay the premium for TID this year. Probably going with SCTI.

Read what others have to say here and on review sites, it may help you decide.

I've never had to make a claim so I usually lean towards the cheapest option that has all the cover I want / need.

I usually don't pay extra upfront to reduce excess, since I've never had to pay the excess, it doesn't seem like it's worth it (for me).

    • +1

Agree, read the PDS and compare conditions of what is important to you. Ie: With delayed luggage, check how long you have to wait before it is considered delayed. This can range from 8-24 hours. List out the differences and decide whether the price differentials are worth it.

  • -2

Do none of you have credit cards?

    • +4

Some of us have read the PDS associated with the credit card insurance.

  • I never pay the international travel insurance,my credit card insurance takes care of it :)

    • Or at least you think it does.

Have you ever made a claim?

Don't you actually know what is covered and what isn't?

      • Yep, I did made a claim due to travel cancellation and very happy with the outcome.
I am with "Which Bank", lol Commonwealth Bank.
My International travel insurance covers by Allianz Global Assistance.

  • Note Aus Post outsource their travel insurance to Covermore. Used them on my last trip, they were fine when it came to paying the claims but very hard to actually get a hold of and contact them whilst overseas. Just keep that in mind.

  • Citibank card insurance vs scti. Does anyone think I should buy additional insurance for $144? Going to Malaysia for two weeks. Family of 4.

    • +2

My Westpac Black CC has a $250 excess vs. paying ~$100 for Auspost insurance (which I made a claim on). Read your PDS, compare the details and decide. Everyone's situation is different.

  • Funnily enough Auspost travel insurance is usually cheaper across the counter rather than on.ine

  • Any one know when it ends?

  • How does this work when going to different countries? I noticed when getting a quote you csn only choose one.

    • If you read through, it says the country where you're spending most of your trip - is the area you select, except: if you are spending 20% or more time in USA - then select USA (North America)

      • That makes me nervous, particularly if you were travelling through a few areas in a relatively equal time period.

        • Then I'd select the furtherest destination as you'd be travelling through the others to get there.
But if you're going anywhere near USA (incl Hawaii) - I'd just select USA (which covers worldwide anyway)

  • I just did a comprehensive comparison for Japan also (no ski), 1 x Adult, 1 x 14yr old (free), 2 weeks in April.

SCTI = $76.50 (+ $100 excess, won't show what it is for $0 without going further)

    AP = $85.60 (+ $100 excess) $102.40 ($0 excess)

    WW = $85.69 (+ $100 excess) $109.59 ($0 excess)
However… receive Free Global SIM with 10Mb of free data included (Call=$0.34p/min, Data=$0.30p/MB, SMS=$0.20, Incoming call=$0.14p/min)

Wondering if it's worth going the Global SIM or safer to get one in Japan?

    • Also make sure you Google the reviews of those who needed to claim. If you're in trouble, you want to be able to bank on them to make claiming easy, and be pro-active in getting you home.

My mate was in Japan a month ago and did his ACL/PCL. He had to nag and nag his insurance agency to arrange a trip home. Was a debacle.

The squeakiest wheel gets the most oil

  • Thanks, just booked insurance for my Cairns trip & saved almost $40. Just as well I procrastinated about doing this until now. Increasing the Car Rental excess (added $3500 on top) as well saved a zillion in extra car insurance at the rental place on car pickup.

  • Would love to get a quote for our trip but Ireland is not on their list of destinations!

  • I got on to comparethemarket.com.au

searched for my trip during Easter period next month for 10 days to Japan.

I got this Online travel insurance (powered by Allianz) at mid-range (comprehensive one for OTI) $28 with 250 excess or 29 with 150 excess.

Seems the next cheapest at comprehensive is $40++.

You can try go and compare..
