    wow. nice deal boss.

  • Nice looking laptop. + Backlit keyboard (I have one)

  • +5

Nice nice.. wish it had a video dedicated video card.. Why is the 17" screens never on sale =(

  • +1

Wow, I wish there was a deal that's just as good as this deal for the XPS 13. $1800+ for a laptop after discount is just ridiculous. Thanks Australian economy, you duh real MVP >:'(

    • get a refurb?

      • I've been refreshing the XPS outlet page like a maniac since yesterday. No luck so far haha.

      • +2

I got a refurb Dell desktop and nothing but trouble with the MB replaced three times and still no fix. If I don't use 2 of the 4 USB3 ports on back it doesn't crash (blue screen) any more.

        • Everyone is different, I bought a Dell XPS13 refurb and has been 100% perfect. My father bought a Dell brand-new and got trouble.

My brand new Apple 15" rMBP came with a creaky back and a few nicks in it's aluminium.

          TL;DR - Manufacturing isn't perfect.

        • @DrStinge:

What year / how old was the mbp 15 retina - trying to learn the value of an old mbp.

        • @ninetyNineCents:

2 months, this is the gpu $3700 model

    • +1

You can get an XPS 13 for US $765 (~AUD 1080) - but it is from Dell USA, so you'll have to pay more shipping or use a US reshipper.

And GST because its over $1000?

    • Go the XPS 15. I picked one up for $2K during the eBay 20% off, added a Samsung 950 SSD and the larger 84Wh battery and it's unreal.

  • Did you see this latitude machine? $1137 off

    http://m.dell.com/mt/www.dell.com/au/business/p/latitude-e55…

    • Still it's $1900… Why do people pay $3,000+ for these?

      • +1

It's a business grade machine with enterprise management and docking station support.

        • Ok thankyou. A lot of customers are probably companies who buy a fair few for employees then would claim it back on tax? I guess those specifications are important but docking station support reminds me of something from the 90s, although I guess it would make sense if you needed something light and portable.

        • +5

@juzz0: Docking station is very useful for those people who are switching between the road and the desk often. Getting back to my desk and need to quickly connect to all my peripherals, monitors, network, etc & then unplug all of them 40 minutes later to meet the next client.

Some docking stations also provide extra ports. For example my Lenovo docking station has both DisplayPort and DVI that allows me to connect to multiple monitors. Yeah these are business features and most consumers probably won't care.

        • Also, corporates will have an account with Dell typically and get much bigger discounts ongoing for these units.
We buy in batches of 25x and they're no where near the online RRP, that said, any XPS or Inspiron typically is about the same as online deals.

        • +1

          @scotty:

With USB-C becoming more common, docking stations will be a thing of the past. I run my 2 x 25" QHD monitors and a USB hub from a single USB-C cable. It's sublime.

        • @scotty:

Is it the old dock with the lock feature or the new onelink pro dock?

Also what kind of laptop stand do you use to give that 45degrees angle comfy nipple navigation feeling? A brick of un-used book from uni?

        • @rodinthink: Old Series 3 mini dock.

        • Its a E5xxx series. Its a consumer grade machine sold for small businesses. Its a step above Vostro, but still below the E6xxx (now discontinued I believe, last one was Haswell E6x40) and E7xxx. 3k is pretty steep for it

        • @revolutio: does the hub need its own power?

  • I would have thought the skylake i5 6200u would have a intel 520 graphics

    • Exactly. I got a spectre with the same skylake CPU and it's got the hd520

  • Shame it's just for the 15" 2in1 and not the normal 7000 series which has the Nvidia 960m.

Don't forget 5% cashback at Cashrewards!

    • +1

Has anyone actually got any real cashback yet?

      • Are you talking about from Dell? Or Cashrewards (ie. into a bank account)?
If the latter, then yes - I have.
I have not yet bought from Dell - I just looked up the cashback value.

        (edit: grammar)

        • Oh cool, just wondering… got a few things using the cash rewards website.. shows on my account as pending.. have not got any real cash back yet.. I guess it's a matter of time.. (One item is dating back 11/11/2015)

        • @BigMac:

you realise that its pending because cashrewards has to wait till past the period in which the item can be returned before the cashback can be paid out right?

pretty sure it states this on the cashrewards website.

        • +1

          @Kenb0:

(One item is dating back 11/11/2015) It's free money so i can't say much… but this is almost 4 months already.

How long can an item be returned?

        • @BigMac:
I do have one claim from an old GMG order dating back to 25 Dec 2014 (only 18c) that is still outstanding. But everything else has been claimed to date (outside of recent orders).

        • @BigMac:

It depends on the item/store. On the cashback offer itself, this will be mentioned, its even highlighted. For some stores, it's 55 days, others its 90, etc. I have no idea what you bought and when its due to be confirmed, but it would have mentioned this on the offer before you went through cashrewards.

Eg. for Coles Online offer now through cashrewards, you can see the following.
          Confirmation: Up to 90 Days
The return period of the goods has passed and the store has confirmed your cashback. Your rewards are now available for payment.

        • +1

          @BigMac:

If paid by paypal, freaking ages. 90 days I think.

    • Unless this particular coupon exists on Cash Rewards I doubt you will be getting the further 5% if you purchase via Cash Rewards site.

  • +1

Dayum. Yeah wish it was for the i5 13.3". The 15" is to big

  • +1

Damn good price. The screen on the 15 model is a little dull though. Not on the level of most 13.3 2 in 1s

    • +1

      Personally I would go this.

The performance is slightly better with the Lenovo (6500u vs 6200u, m360 vs HD5500) but this Dell has a gimmick functional folding hinge.

    • +3

      Thinkpad E560:
Cheaper by about $100 after code and cashback.
      Slightly faster processor.
IPS display (better colors, larger viewing angle)
Discrete graphics card (good for games and videos)
Optical drive (Can swap out for a hard drive later)
Trackpad has discrete buttons for left and right click (Huge bonus for some, but others don't mind having the buttons integrated into the pad)
Optional camera/WiFi upgrades and $1 sleeve

      Inspiron 15:
      Touchscreen
      Lighter and thinner
      More SSD space
      Backlit keyboard

I'd say the Thinkpad is the winner if you don't plan on travelling around with it much. If you're on the go regularly, the Inspiron is also a good deal, although you should look into 11"-14" models if size is an issue.

      • Thanks! It's purely for home, my GF likes to sit out on the verandah :)

        • +1

If you're going to use outdoors the E560 is probably best with good brightness and matte display. Reflective screens annoy me.

      • Win-win

    • +1

Randomly I was looking to swap my Dell (same model) for the E560. Dell is far better looking IMHO I just prefer the old school Lenovo design. Also like the numeric keypad on the Lenovo which is absent on the Dell

  • Limited to the first 200 customers

    199 now.

    Thanks Scotty.

Specs seem to tick all the right boxes and yoga display maybe a bonus.

  • Can i order 50 of these? my workplace actually is looking for some laptops at this price range.

    • +1

With that kind of volume you should call a sales rep directly and talk turkey with them.

Chances are if you have some decent negotiation skills that you could get for this price or better, and get some enterprise level support thrown in.

      • already tried and i certainly dont get $500 off :(

        • Not good. I am surprised they didn't at least match this deal.

Maybe try again with a different rep, and if that fails another rep. I've heard good things about Dell volume sales in the past - but that it can come down to how generous your rep is feeling.

  • Great deal, now I kinda regret order the lg Ultrabook for $795. Sigh

  • +1

User reviews are quite mixed… rated 2.9 out of 5 stars from 185 reviews.
Of course the Dell site filters the reviews by highest rating by default… if you change the dropdown to lowest rating, there are quite a few complaints.

Not saying its not a good laptop, or a good deal (I have a 2yr old Inspiron 15R), but Id be happier if the average review score was 4 to 4.5 instead of under 3.

Also, weighs almost 2.2 KG so its fairly heavy.. keep that in mind if you plan on carrying it often. I hate taking mine between home/work.

    • Be careful some reviews showing up are for different models including a QHD screen. This is just FHD.

Whats the difference between this and the microsoft one that goes on sale for $600

    • +1

I prefer Snickers to Mars. I like the added nuts.

      • :S i understand i wasnt clear but seriously .
My apologies for not referencing, but i referred to this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/227265
I just feel that the jump isnt really wirth the extra pricing . Maybe its worth waiting for another super deal from microsoft.

        • +1

The Microsoft signature edition Inspiron CPU is a generation older, but not significantly slower. It also looks like a 5000 series, so a tier down from the 7000 series (so not as good build quality, but it's subjective). The Microsoft edition has a mechanical hard drive compared to the solid state in this deal, but that can easily be changed though.

The Microsoft edition appears to have a better iGPU, but I think the HD5500 listed in this deal may be a typo as it's a Skylake CPU and should have the better 520 iGPU.

          http://ark.intel.com/products/88193/Intel-Core-i5-6200U-Proc…

The clincher though, and IMO really the only reason to jump on this deal over others such as the recent Lenovo deal is the touchscreen LCD that can turn this laptop into a large tablet, or be put into tent more to have a more comfortable mouse + keyboard easily. That said, the FHD touchscreen in the Microsoft edition is probably the same LCD panel (would need to confirm), it just can't hinge the same way.

All of them are way overpowered for most people's needs such as surfing the web, streaming videos, word processing, light gaming and more all at the same time - but significantly under powered if you want to play recent computer games at native resolution with at least some of the eyecandy options turned on.

I'm waiting on a deal for the sister/brother to this deal - a Dell Inspiron 7559. In USA they can be had for $799 USD. In Australia they start around $1700 AUD - it's an absolute joke.

  • I notice it has a 3 cell battery. For non intensive gaming, how long would that last?

  • +3

    WTF is "True Life" display?
I'll never buy a laptop with a TN display again. There's no excuse for equipping a notebook with a TN display these days. They're CRAP

    • Them Glare just so freaking annoying especially under sunlight. Its like a mirror with keyboard on it

  • After submitting, it said Oz Bargain Special :).

  • very nice !!! Thank you !

  • +1

Nearly there. Just need a deal with a similar speced laptop such as this with a dedicated graphics card and a smaller screen. So close!

    • Have you ever had a laptop smaller than 15" with a dedicated GPU for gaming?

I tried using a 13" and I just couldn't find it a decent experience despite really trying to convince myself that I had made a good purchase.

There's the Alienware m14x which looks a bit chunky and the ratio of LCD:bezel is pretty heavy on the bezel, and the Razer Blade 14 which is incredible - but more than 2x what I would be willing to part with, horrible I/O and overpowered for my needs.

Apart from the Dell Inspiron 7559, I just can't think of any other new laptop with a decent GPU that would be in a price range I'm willing to spend.

      Need:
Quad core (fast 2 core could also work).
Dedicated GPU at least 950m/r9 m370x.
2x drive bays for SSD boot drive + HDD.
      1920x1080 IPS or better.
      Screen size 14" to 15"
      3.5kg or under.
      Battery life is a non-issue.
      Less RGB lighting is better.
      Ideally around $1000.

      Got any suggestions?

      • Not too sure buddy. I haven't been browsing any laptops because I'm awaiting for the ideal one to pop up in a deal on OzBargain, haha.

  • Would this Dell laptop be better value than the recent Lenovo laptop? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236745

Usage: Non gaming, mainly for surfing the web and writing up report, carrying to and from work

    • +1

For work — I'll probably go with the Lenovo. ThinkPad E560 has IPS screen, probably better keyboard than Inspiron 15 and have TrackPoint. However this Dell is a 2-in-1 with a touch screen. You can run it in kiosk mode / tent mode on the table or use it as a 2.1kg tablet :)

      • Thank you! I'll stick with the lenovo.

    • +1

Truth be told lenovo looks terrible, it might be more value in terms of technical specs but besides an apple computer it looks like from the 90's, I prefer this two in one with no red dot in the middle lol

  • Guys, I am desperately looking for Asus Zenbook UX305UA 8Gb/256Gb/FHD for around 1250AUD. Any ideas? I can't even see such model on E-bay Australia and Amazon doesn't ship to us. :-(

  • Here I thought admin is more Thinkpad guy and Scrimshaw more to Dell man, Guess Im wrong

  • +1

    I have received mine today.
The first thing I did was to uninstall the McAfee Antivirus. However, my wireless became unstable and feed up with it so I did a free installation of windows 10 via USB and reinstalled Dell drivers. I have also updated the firmware Bios for the laptop, SSD, and Touchscreen. Very nice unit for the price. It is much easy to read the screen than the recent Dell 13 XPS 4K that I have bought. My eyes are not too good.

    • Yeah. Reinstalling the Wifi drivers from Intels website fixes that. Clean install is a much better Idea. I bought this laptop a couple of months ago. My wifi and USB ports were not working out of the box. I called Dell and they offered to replace it. While I was waiting for a replacement I found this fix. The USB ports were not working due to the buggy Intel wifi driver which was clashing with the trackpad driver. Now I would have done it straight away but I didn't want to remove the HDD to put files on it. The USB ports worked for 5-10 seconds after restart so I had to try a few times to copy the drivers on the desktop.

I called Dell to tell them I had fixed the issue. They said that my replacement was due in a couple of days and I couldn't opt to keep the "old" unit. My replacement had a loose track pad out of the box. They offered a replacement for the trackpad which made it worst. Called Dell again and they offered a refund refund rather than a repair. Good computer but buggy out of the box. I will order another one when I get my refund. 21 Days and counting Dell WTF!

  • Thanks for this. I killed my laptop over the weekend, so definitely need a replacement. It is due on 17/3.

  • Does this deal still work. Don't know why but can't apply

    • Yep, not working for me either :(
