Wow! It doesn't come with a pencil??

    • +2

hahaha…at this price, it should - hey!

  • +7

    That is an expensive pencil.

  • don't snap it.

  • A $130 pencil that doesn't even erase on the other end.

    • +1

You can probably slip your own rubber onto it.

    • -2

Graf von Faber-Castell make $10,000 pencils also without an eraser on the end, lets complain about them as well whilst we are on the complain train.

  • -3

Wow. Just wow. I didnt even know such a product existed.

It should come with "free magic beans" as an incentive to buy.

I bought a $10 cover for my ipad a few years ago - it came with a free capacitive pencil, that has since resided somewhere in the back of a drawer

Looking forward to the Apple ruler for a similar price so you can draw a straight line on your ipad.

    • +5

This pencil is not capacitive, it connects via bluetooth and has an internal chip that helps to analyse pressure and latency.

The ruler is already available on the device as when you are using the pencil, the device can accept finger gestures (rather than as drawing) and you may press down with your fingers to bring up an on-screen ruler.

      Hope that helps!

It's a very good and useful product - but is it worth anywhere near that price?

        • Not for me (until I find a good excuse), but I guess some people must think it's worth it. Apple has a monopoly on Apple products after all, they can name their price.

  • At this price it should come with a tablet!!!!
why not get a Parker or something and write on some real papers?
that would be a classy ozbargainer.

    • +4

The pencil and tablet combination is intended to replace a high-end wacom-style digital input so that anything you draw can be directly manipulated on-screen.

  • +3

If you have not owned one of these pencils you won't understand why people still fork out so much money for something like this. The surface pro pen or any other tablet+pen combo doesn't even come close to the ipad pro and pencil at this stage in time. The accuracy and ability to draw or write like you would with a pen and paper is almost identical since it's so sensitive and has almost no writing delay. You are able to upload, share, edit, merge files created with the pencil much more easily. Simple to judge if you don't have one, best that you don't :)

Sure apple's way of selling these is quite stupid I would agree but the technology is worth it for those who can put it to use.

Also to note it's only $10 more expensive at Harvey but you get local stock (after sign up coupon).

      Ok Steve Jobs.

    • +1

But will I be undefeated in Draw something with this pencil?

The surface pro pen or any other tablet+pen combo doesn't even come close to the ipad pro and pencil at this stage in time.

Have you even used the Surface Pro or is that just 'apple fanboy' talking?

I'm currently using my Surface Pro and then BT pen it comes with is perfect, even when I'm utilising it for doing logic/mathematics.

      • +4

Yes I have tried it before I decided to go with apple's ipad pro at Harvey. I needed something to use especially in design as I create a lot of my content for teaching prep work. There's nothing wrong with the surface pro, it's for your own use and what suits you best is well… up to you. I just felt in terms of art works, character creation and that really deep detail you want to achieve (fine lines, pencil sketches and shading etc.), the apple pencil exceeds the surface pro pen. I purchased the device based on my needs and what was offered on the market, if the pro was better I would have went with it :) As for the apple fanboy thing I tend to prefer apple products but it doesn't necessarily mean I buy everything blindly without doing my research and figuring what's best for me. The department of education has already phased out a lot of apple products (if not the whole thing) so if the hardware wasn't good I would already be out.

        • I fully agree with everything you said. I've tried the surface pro, the wacom cintiq and the ipad pro, and honestly the ipad pro is the only one which genuinely feels like i'm drawing on paper and pencil. Even the wacom cintiq doesn't compare. And being able to use the ipad pro as a secondary display to the Mac/PC makes it even better as you can run full photoshop/illustrator perfectly.

      • LOve how everytime someone has something good to say about an Apple product theyr automatically an 'apple fanboy'

        • LOve how everytime someone has something good to say about an Apple product theyr automatically an 'apple fanboy'

No, it wasn't "something good to say about Apple". It was a direct comparison with other leading products and making the ridiculous generalisation that "nothing comes close". I highly doubt they've used the Surface Pro pen on a regular basis and have enough experience to make such a bold claim and comparison.

If it was a simple statement expressing it's a good pen, fine. No one would have cared. Read the post again mate.

@Chthonic: Nope I can guarantee you if you are looking for a more detailed and sophisticated pen the apple pencil is better. This is from a hardware point of view, even a quick google will show you what I mean. I'm not saying apple is better than microsoft, I am saying the apple pencil is more useful (hardware wise) than the pen provided by the sp. Fyi your assumption that I have barely used a surface pro pen is wrong, it just does not do as much as the apple pencil.

Well, I know that this is a great bargain! Even if Apple haters don't! Thank you. This is a great deal as I too am getting the new iPad pro. Great post!

    • -6

      lol dumb

  • Can I ask what you need Pro 9.7 for?
I can see the use for the 12 inch or Microsoft pro 4 , both great ,but I can't see the point of smaller screen with that function over the normal iPad 9.7.

    • +2

I'm looking to get the smaller tablet for the portability at almost the same resolution. the larger sized screens along with the weight of those devices is much more difficult to comfortably hold vertically for an extended amount of time.

      • I mean also compared to a normal 9.7.
I just don't see the smaller screen being great for pen applications ( apart from being double the price). I have tried the ms 4 and the apple pro 12 and prefer the feel of the ms4 pen but may now be getting a iPad air or pro ( does the pro come with LTE for being mobile as that's a biggie for me) . My laptops got 4g, the tablet will need to as well.
What are you using it for that you need pen applications? Can you mark up DWG designs?

        • It looks like all of them have LTE, but only the pro goes up to 265GB storage, whereas the iPad Air 2 now only maxes out at 64GB.

I imagine that Apple's hopes may be to eventually carve out two lines of iPad - Air and Pro, much like the MacBook line so that there's some overlap in sizes but the choice is whether you want the extra grunt of a pro device.

At the moment, I would assume that the iPad Pro will be updated for longer, and be able to access more features in the future. However the iPad Air 2 is still head and shoulders above any android tablet (and has good and bad points against windows devices), and now with the price drop looks to be a great bargain.

        • @victinini: I think the Air will only be kept as a legacy device and eventually ditched. The evidence is in the fact that 128GB option was canned. This is always done when a product is superseded. It will be around for a couple of years, like the iPad 2 was. There aren't significant points of difference to the Pro and business is about up selling and maximising profits.
So it will be iPad Mini & iPad Pro

    • +3

I do maths & physics at uni & I am seriously thinking of getting the Pro because using a pen is the only way to do calculations & drawings quickly. I have a standard iPad and it doesn't cut it & neither will my MacBook.
iPad Pro with pencil seems perfect. 12" is too big.

  • I update my apple stuff every two years and there wasn't a 9.7 update in September so this is the latest iPad for me to update to.

    • +1

The pro and air are for different uses, the pro isn't the new model to replace the air, it is a different beast not a replacement.

      • Not sure about this. It is possible that the Air could be phased out or not get updated for a while, what with the price drop

  • A very expensive pencil indeed.
