Cheaper to get one of these and add a micro-sd card of your choice.

    • Do you know if the speeds would be similar?

      • Yes they are nothing but bridges to the actual connectors. You don't lose transfer speeds. However most cards are slower than this one as OP has pointed out.

        • Excellent thanks for that. Do you know any upper limits for storage with the current airs? I think the Pros used to only cope with 64GB

        • @King Tightarse: I am currently using a 128gb sandisk ultra with this adapter. Not sure if it'll go higher mate.

@King Tightarse: Just had a read around and found this.

Cards that conform to the SD 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x standards should work. The SD card slot can use cards that are Standard SD (Secure Digital) 4 MB to 2 GB, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) 4G B to 2 TB.

        • @spaghettiman:
Thanks. I actually found that but was a bit confused as it is not model specific and yet I am sure the Pros only do (did) >64GB. Will search a bit more. (I had to buy an air today for somebody)

    • I'm currently using the suggested arrangement with Sandisk Ultra 80Mb/s microSD. However, the read/write speed on these ones are far superior i.e.95Mb/s and 60Mb/s respectively. So it's definitely the better arrangement and permanent solution albeit with little bit of added cost involved.

  • not a massive deal, about $3 cheaper than Amazon delivered.

I think the main part of the deal was that it is Australian stock with local warranty.

      • sorry, didnt notice that. as soon as I see kogan I assume Grey import.

  • 256GB version for $191.20

BTW does anyone know if these sleep and resume with the SD card still mounted without issues?

  • it's 100% Australian stock with full local warranty.

When did kogan start selling aus stock? It's a miracle

Worth noting that any devices plugged into a mid 2012+ Macbook prevent OS X going into deep sleep.

This means it'll drain the battery about 10-20% per day in sleep mode like most PC's, instead of the usual 2-3% per day. It'll increase battery wear (by cycling) every time the Macbook is in standby and not plugged into power.

Of course, if it's plugged in 24x7 or shut down whenever not plugged into power, this is not an issue.

apparently if they are not mounted at the time of sleeping they will still go into suspend or deep sleep mode. The transcend toolbox app will automatically unmount when going into sleep and mount again once being woken up, allowing deep sleep.

another piece of software is available here that will work with any sd card mounted:

I'm sure there are other ways for free using applescript etc.

      • Didn't know - I'll try it on mine later tonight. Thanks for the tip!

      • Following up, last night I ejected my SD card in Finder but left it plugged into the SD slot, just powered up my Macbook Pro and the battery has drained 13% overnight.

I'll try the software over the weekend.

        • Interesting, would love to test it to see if it works on my end but currently don't own one of these drives. Jettison even claims being able to go into deep sleep as one of the features of the software so I can only guess that it works. Good luck with your tests, hope you get it working.
