Not cheap as chips but for $120.21 USD altogether for slot loading Blu-Ray drive from Pioneer that's steel for me as these Pioneer drives rarely go on sale.
Around $10 AUD cheaper then buying the inferior build quality but newer model, Pioneer BDR-XS06T locally.
Not 100% sure about Windows 10 compatibility but Pioneer BDR-XD05TB & Pioneer BDR-XS06T works well on W10 with it's W8.1 drivers.
You can max out the reading speed with it's drive utility tool from Pioneer's website.
I believe B&H is trying to get rid of old stock as this model is out of print.

Yes… my desktop has no drive. Mini ITX.

I think it's more a comment on the prevalence of non-physical media.

    • people still use these?

      Makes good coaster. :)

    • people still use these?

lots, gown-up people with a large (non-Kogan/Dick Smith) 24Hz HD/UHD screen, HD surround sound receiver and multiple quality speakers, reclining arm chairs, pop-corn poppers - those kind. See Home theater.

  • Looks like a sexy unit, but does anyone make an external Blu-Ray reader? I don't care about the write.

Anyone had any experience burning blue ray disks?

    Are they reliable?
What do the disks cost and are they easy to get hold of?
What is the maximum capacity that they can hold?
How long to burn a disk?

    Thanks

It depends on what you're burning. If you want long-term archival storage then you'll want to look at using M-Discs:

      http://www.verbatim.com/subcat/optical-media/m-disc/

They're far from being cheap though - the Blu-Ray ones especially ($15 USD for a pack of 3). Generally hard to find too unless you order direct from http://www.mdisc.com assuming that international shipping is available. According to http://www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en_1/binarydata_m-disc-comp…, the Pioneer BDR-XS05 is capable of burning to M-Discs (Blu-Ray only).

Blu-Ray discs come in many different sizes including 25GB, 50GB, and 100GB (check mdisc website for details).

Personally, I'd rather use DVD for long-term storage as it's the more common format of the two, but again it depends on the size of whatever it is that you're backing up.

    • Hit and miss depending on the quality of the media. After burning tests that pass can have bad reads, unsure if it's the media or picky players. I've bought 25 and 50 gig disks. Disks are down to the $3 mark but the quality matches the price. I haven't used my burner in 8 months.

  • Does this require separate power supply?

    • +1

The last external blu-ray burner i had it utilised two USB2 ports, one for the data and the second USB port to power the drive.

This drive going by the specifications it looks like only requires either one USB3 port (must get the required power through the USB3 port and data throughput at the same time) or 2 x USB2 ports. So it shouldn't require an external power supply. Good to go. Just make sure that you have either one free USB3 port or 2 x USB2 ports.

I have an LG with a split cable. Power is supplied by both cables and the second non data one is only required if you can't get enough power from a single port. My MacBook will power the drive from one USB, where other people's systems may not.

I'm not sure about this model, but I have the newer Model pioneer as well as the LG and that shipped with a USB 3.0 Y cable from memory which works in USB 2.0 systems as well.

    Ripping speed?

      Yes.

      It's a steel!

  • my plastic asus external burner does the job fine for $45, spending an extra $100 coz its steel ? wtf..

    • Wait, how did u get Blu ray USB external burner from ASUS for $45
      I guessing it's 2.0 USB one, right?
Cheapest I've seen that's 3.0 USB BR external is $59 for non branded one from Hong Kong.

Btw, my quote "that's steel for me" was just a saying.
I waited for decently priced slot loading USB 3.0 Blu-Ray drive for while now. Brought right out of bat when I saw that webpage I've posted it here.

  • $30 markdown seems to be back again. $120.21 USD delivered.

    • Cool, I've edited to post, thx.
