iPhone SE 16GB $679 @ The Good Guys ($654 with Discounted eGift Cards Purchased via Groupon)

770

If you NEED to get hold of the iPhone SE and want a little discount, you can:

  1. Buy an eGift Card as posted by easternculture's deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/241222

  2. Wait for your eGift Card to arrive - You will receive an email confirming your purchase - note this is not your The Good Guys Digital Gift Card. An activation email for your Digital Gift Card will be emailed to you in approx. 2-4 business days from purchase.

  3. use the $500 credit (bought for $475) and then contribute another $179 (You could even do a sneaky with multiple eGift Cards but I wont go there!)

More Pro tips:

a) Keep an eye out for the 'clearance' 5s cases (and other peripherals) by retailers. I grabbed 2 for $2 the other day from Dimmey's. They also are on clearance at other retailers (Woolies etc). The SE will be around for a while (wont go absolete for 2-3yrs and these cases fit perfectly! See: http://www.imore.com/iphone-5-cases-fit-iphone-se

b) If you have an iPhone 4s or above that's in good/great condition, you can score a trade in for $100+ in Apple Credit (used at Apple stores only) which might save you more than this deal! https://reuserecycle-apple-au.brightstar.com/is-bin/INTERSHO…

c) OK we all get it, 16GB sucks. Especially with the size of the .jpg files the awesome new camera on the SE will create. To maximise your storage you should setup the Google Photos app, rather than the expensive Cloud services like iCloud etc. http://www.cnet.com/au/products/google-photos/ and YouTube tutorials for more info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjzttXdWRbU that way you can delete image file from the phone and still have it online. For free.

Hope this helps someone out there.

  • Shouldn't wait for iPhone7, for price drops on older models.

    • Yeah… If you pay with the Coles mc you get to claim on the price drop instead.

Insightful. Grab the 64GB version then for the same numeric discount.

          Non-holographic ? WTF

        • +6

What? The 4" is an advantage in this case as those wanting this want a smaller phone.

        • +3

Hey, some people have had 4" for a lot longer than just 2016

        • can be used with 1 hand …… apple designed it that size so that your thumb can reach any part of the screen when you hold it in your hand, also fits into smaller pockets or tighter fitting clothes, less likely to bend if you sit on it.

safer than people trying to use both hands with a phablet while driving though they shouldn't be using a phone at all while driving.

    • -7

Pff, just put in a micro SD card.

      • +7

That doesn't even work well on Android, most of the Apps want to keep their data on the phone.

        • +3

          Yep, it's totally infuriating.

        • +5

Leave apps on the internal storage, photos and other media on the card. 16gb is a sad joke.

        • +2

@Merlict: 16gb is mainly for work phones, not really personal.

        • people rarely really want to watch your movies of your holidays, or selfies ….. they might seem interested by being polite ……. but if you sent out an invite that your having a film night and will be screening the stuff on your phone …… not sure how many people would attend. my phone has 128GB and I'm just hitting 16GB used …… I only keep the better pictures, and backup to my PC. Even 8GB of photos is a lot to sort through.
32GB is nice, but I can live with 16GB id the price is right.

    • +4

It might not be suitable for you, but there are plenty of people who it's perfect for.

  • Should fork out an addition $95 one more eGift card.

    • OP says:

You could even do a sneaky with multiple eGift Cards but I wont go there!

I don't understand why multiple gift cards couldn't be used. Maybe OP can explain.

Bought one from Telstra store yesterday for $672, sold the pos 6S plus a month ago and been using a 5C to test size while waiting. Have 8gb left, i dump all photos/videos to iMac and 128gb iPad pro. Stream music, got all my apps. Does me. Brilliant phone.

    • -1

I'd be all over it if it had 3D Touch. It's seriously the handiest feature.

      • +12

i didnt think people actually used it.

        • +1

I use it every day. It's super useful on contacts and quick shortcuts on apps. The peek and pop I don't use much though.

        • @stickyfingers:

Never used it on my 6S. I prefer Version 1 TID too, easier to check messages on screen without it unlocking so fast.

        • @Robster33: No way! Just use the power button to check your lock screen. I love how fast Touch ID is.

        • I use it mainly to switch apps but the resolution on the sensitivity is rather low so its difficult sometimes to get the appropriate gesture for it to switch apps. At this point though, by large its mostly gimicky as apps arent taking advantave of it and those that are, arent in a useful way

        • @stickyfingers:

When lying flat prefer to use home button, much better.

    • Lol why 6S pos?

    • -1

lol Classic you downgraded your phone just have the newest thing out ? Lol classic apple user. Apart from the camera and processor is mostly 3 -4 year old parts lol, still old screen , Old front facing camera l, shell ect. Why not wait til iPhone 7 comes out in few month time then at least be only a couple of years behind everything else as oppose to 4 ?

      • +4

What a (profanity), you are so immature you get offended over someones phone choice? Pathetic. Some people actually make a living with their phone so get what suits best, i am guessing you have one for fake book and wankergram lol ??
Who's says i won't get a 7 i can afford whatever i want whenever. How was school this week :)

        • Well you know what they say A fool and their money are soon parted. Funny you mention schoo, as the iPhone 5 is what most school kids have I've noticed..

        • @ubcool:

    +1 for the Pro Tips.

  • Crazy how iPhone 5s costs more than this. Hope a price drop real soon.

I reckon that you'd find it cheaper to import it from US. Even with 10% GST included, you pay around $80 AUD more in Australia. Not too sure about the warranty though I thought Apple warranty was a world warranty (even though you'd probably get 1 year instead of 2 even that is the case)?

    • +1

IMPORTANT RESTRICTION FOR iPHONE AND iPAD SERVICE.

Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone and iPad to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device.

      Warranty infomration here: ttp://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/iphone-english-a.html

      • +1

Not sure who've negged you, but here is my vote up to compensate for those.

There are few model numbers for iPhones and they represent different cellular bands that they support (for example iPhone 6s http://www.techwalls.com/iphone-6s-plus-models-differences/).

I did hear from some people that it depends on your model number. If you have the one that's Australian model, I heard that they usually take it in for a replacement (if not, then it highly depends, coz I heard mixed results). That said, I didn't say for this because I am not certain. I've never gone through any of that myself.

That said, even if they don't provide warranty, it's around 20% difference (as we wouldn't pay GST on grey import).

      • in the USA they have some models that are carrier locked ……. so they don't carry stock outside of the USA …… you will find if they have the same model as yours, apple will fix ….. they don't punish travellers if their devices break outside the country of original purchase provide they have the model in stock so they can swap.

It's to stop someone walking into the Genuis bar in Melbourne with a Verison iPhone and asking for a repair …… if you have a global version iPhone no problems, carrier specials ….. no swap over kept.

Love apple warranty and service …… have android at the moment ….. hope one day to be able to afford an iPhone again …… have MacBooks and iPad though.

Those who need a new smartphone and like iOS
Those who don't like a large phone like an iPhone 6+

"…the SE arguably now fills the niche that the iPod Touch used to, as the gateway into the wide world of connected devices. It's a solid option for kids angling for smartphones of their very own, or an older person dipping a toe into the smartphone world for the first time. It could also be…" http://www.afr.com/technology/mobiles-and-tablets/apple/who-…

I own an S6 Edge btw!

      • for kids i reckon a xiaomi redmi 3 is a much better option. cheap but good with 3 day battery life.

        • But, as great of a phone it is, it lacks low band coverage (no 700 for Optus or Telstra or 850mhz for Vodafone), the Oneplus X at least has the full bands for the Vodafone network

    • +5

its basically a small 6s. some people love small phones. plus it has a beast battery and a beast camera and beast ios software, much better than touchwiz lol

    • +4

Find me a better phone running iOS with a smaller screen than the current iPhone 6(S) offerings. Go.

      • -5

with a 4 year old battery, case, screen, front camera and other parts no i give up…

        • 4 year old battery, case, screen, front camera and other parts

          A) News to me that batteries could go out of date? They're all Li-Ion or Li-Po, no real innovation in batteries last time I checked…

          B) Outdated case? Now you're really sounding fanboyish. A metal case with glass inserts just sounds so old school!

          C) Oh so you work for Apple and know they're using the exact same panel, do you? I've heard it's a new generation panel with deeper blacks and better colour, but as a fanboy you don't do your research.

          D) If other parts were outdated, I'm sure you would've specifically mentioned them. Other than the old Touch ID (which some people prefer anyway), I'm sure you can't name any others

Stop with your fanboy nonsense. I love my Nexus 6P, but that doesn't mean I can't respect what Apple are doing. No one else makes such a small phone that's this good.

    • Not everyone loves a phone larger than 4.7". I know many who'd prefer something smaller yet still have the latest software and pack some half decent hardware as well.

And no, Android is not the one solution to all phone requirements. Manufacturers are creating phones which carry the 'mini' tag, yet are far from it.

Perhaps you need to realise that some users have alternate needs to yours…

Would I buy a Korean car? Nope.
Do I understand there is a userbase? Sure.

      • -3

        You Asian by chance?

    • +1

Because 30million of the previous model sold and companies like making what their clients like buying, it's a silly concept

    • Sorry, I'm running out of negative votes. :P

  • Big W will probably have this phone soon. Might as well buy with 7.5% discounted gift cards.

    • True, but when's 'soon'? No official word from them.

      • +1

True, just depends how soon one wants one. If Big W have it online there is also cash rewards. Also, some people have 10% discounted wish cards, others have 15% discounted wish cards. So many different end points depending which option you have available to you.

  • Wow $600+ for a 4" phone?

    • -1

      Yeah but it's not any 4" screen it's a 4 year old one !

      • +1

I reckon you should go back to school to learn basic maths. It's 2 years 6 months 12 days old to be precise.

        http://lmgtfy.com/?q=iphone+5s+launch+date

        • Lol which is the same screen as the iPhone 5 which came out a year before that ! I would say go back to school but you can't teach not stupid…

    • it's designed that size so can be used with one hand ….. thumb reaches every part of the screen. Also small phones means less leverage if you sit on it, so less likely to break if sat on.

      Different phones for different lifestyles.

  • -6

I don't understand why people would even buy this. Appleheads need to realise the glory days of Apple are long over. All the competitors have amazing products and more importantly, at much better price points.

    • +5

but they are not as good as Apple products ;). Many of my friends started using Samsung Galaxy S2 when they first came and kept upgrading until S5 and then they switched to Apple and they never looked back.

      Apple = Quality

      • +1

Thanks Samsung fanboys for negging me. You don't have guts to reply to my comment.

        • +3

Then I'll reply. Apple products are very high quality, absolutely. But the price for that is just ridiculous. As are the specs you get for that price. Android flagships (Nexus 6P, OnePlus Two, LG G5) have way better specs for at least $300-400 less (if you're comparing say, a 64gb iphone 6s) and are still high quality. For Samsung, the prices now are pretty high as well, so you can't argue that they're great value for money anymore. But I'd still say they're better quality and have greater functionality than a comparable iphone (but they cost around the same).

        • @hedonistic: well said, I completely agree with you on the price point.

      • +1

I have the Samsung S5 ….. it was due to price and my budget not CPU or better selfies, etc …… if iPhone was same price as Samsung I would swap back to iPhone ….. Android vs IOS I prefer IOS but currently can only afford Android had iPhones in the past.

Specs aren't the only thing, smart phones are about software and integration to either your work environment if you have specific apps you need, and if they are part of ecosystem that forms part of your other technology stable at home.

    • -1

Which flagship Android with better specs is under 700$?

      • +1

pretty much all of them if you wait 3 months from launch

        • -1

Name a specific Android phone that's 4 inches, gas BETTER specs and performance than the iPhone, and has a better camera for a lower price.

        • +2

your assumption is 4inches is better. it is for some people but doesn't make it objectively superior as a niche product. in terms of cost of production it is cheaper than larger screens.

        • +1

I bought my OnePlus Two at launch (paid too much as well because of our exchange rate, express forwarded shipping) and it still cost me $650 in total. This was 9 months ago. And the phone has internal specs similar to the S6 and better than the iphone 6s. Albeit, the camera and screen aren't as good, but I'm paying half the price so it's not like you can get everything.

      • +1

        OnePlus Two.

  • +3

I personally thought the model was reasonable. Apple using same screen was bit of a downer (especially since I did see few people complaining about the green tint on their iPhone 5s). That said, I think given A9 SoC and 2GB RAM + more battery, I personally think it's a reasonable device at US price for someone who wants a small phone. Touch ID being 1st gen I think was forgivable given that iPhone 6 used same parts and it was significantly cheaper than iPhone 6 in US.

Though at Australian price… I don't think I can be as positive about this phone. Even after taking GST into account, we pay around $80 more (if I remember correctly, I did the calulation on the day they announced it, so I might be remembering it wrong). It's not Apple being cautious with exchange rate, since iPad Pro 9.7 was within $30 AUD difference from US price with XE.com exchange rate (which given how companies have to factor in exchange rate, I thought was more than reasonble).

  • There are some differences between iPhone SE and the 6S:

    • older generation of touch ID (same as iPhone 5S basically)
    • no 3D touch (I am not a fan, it doesn't work most of the time for me)
    • front facing camera is inferior
    • lower screen resolution (obviously, with a smaller display)

There is also a question on the CPU clock speed. There is a possibility of it being underclocked (Apple marketing will probably spin it as a way to improve battery life, but we all know Apple would do it so that (1) it won't exceed the performance of 6S and (2) a good way to clear A9 CPUs which did not pass the test for 6S, but still decent enough).

    • +1

On benchmark, at least A9 on SE was similar if not better, so I don't think they've underclocked the AP for iPhone SE.

      http://www.redmondpie.com/399-iphone-se-might-be-the-fastest…
      http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_se_enters_antutu_equal_…

      • I did a comparison between my 5S and a friend's new SE. Speed is faster but the law of diminishing returns definitely applies since the 5S was already 64bit and fast. So clock speed I don't think is a big issue. The ram increase from 1-2Gb is going to deliver some advantages particularly when multi-tasking and with graphics but are either of these activities really applicable for a phone? I vote not. Sticking with my 5S unlike my friend who couldn't resist the upgrade.

        • It's still an upgrade. You seem to be content with 5S, then you don't need to upgrade.

RAM would probably be good for those who open a lot of tabs on safari and those who'd want to have more multitasking ability. GPU and CPU upgrade is, well not only it's better for performance, the SoC contains more tha just CPU and GPU so it'd be good for other things (the easiest one I can think of is SE has always-on Siri, because of how SoC changed from 5s's SoC). Besides, a lot of animations and effects on iOS do end up requiring better GPU and CPU (like blur effects, so I've heard).

Besides, newer model with better SoC is always better than newer model with worse SoC in my opinion.

It's an upgrade nonetheless is what I want to say. I personally think the phone is more or less 6s in a smaller packaging (with few parts from iPhone 5s, but still). Whether you want one or not is your choice, at least I am not telling you to buy the new model.

        • I'm a great believer in sweating the life span of phones unless there is a compelling reason to change …… and apple are good with IOS support for older models.

  • +1

Why so many votes for less than 5% off the price that requires an additional step of getting the gift voucher first? I realise this might be the best price for this phone right now, but is it that much of a great deal to have 63 votes?

    • Pent-up demand from a part of the market that's been so badly ignored. Wonder if Google, Samsung, Sony et al. are seeing this.

      • Im sure they are and are in the final stages of producing a competitive device with similar specs!

      • Google make money from advertising so bigger screens means more browsing … apple makes money from selling the phone and has a customer base that is used to that size ….. there's plenty of small cheaper android phones on the market …… not sure which android vendor will do a 4" android 6 phone though …. for android this is the less than $100 market very low margins.

      • All the smaller android phones are low power and ram and end up being laggy

Why isn't there an android phone the same size and weight as the Galaxy S2 but with a high end processor and 2gb RAM ?

        • Xperia Z Compact??

  • Would rather get a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact 32GB for $500
