A great price for the i7 version of this machine. Check out the past ozbargain deals on this, the i5 version is currently selling for $1124 @ Dell

Adorama is one of US's biggest camera companies, not sure how their service compares to amazon or B&H, but they should be also pretty good.

Make sure you go via the deal link as well (appears to be a link sent via email), otherwise price will appear as $70 more expensive.

    Pretty good find OP (Y)

  • +4

good price. wish this has an indepedent gfx card i hate integrated. :(

    • I'm still awaiting the new laptop Pascal GPU's to release and finding it really hard to resist given the surge of laptop deals on OzB.

    • Unless you play games, it shouldn't make any difference.

  • Great price for this spec.

  • +2

    Only missing thunderbolt 3…

    • +6

Almost the same specs as the XPS13 apart from that, which isn't worth ~$500 more, which makes this a good deal.

For those who want a quick video as to why TB3 is/will be so important:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZSMcKbuEnA

TB3 has the potential to end high end mobile GPUs, it's a prerequisite on my next laptop.

      • I keep looking for tb3 ultrabooks too yeah!

  • Are those price from US included tax?

    • +2

US prices don't include tax because it varies per state.

    • At just under the $A1000 limit, you won't pay GST.

In five months time we'll be paying GST on many more imports thanks to Joe Hockey dropping the A$1000 threshold.

      • It's only five months until 1 July 2017?

    • No tax on out of state internet purchases in USA.

  • Bothers me that this "i7" is a dual core. Quad core's should be the bare minimum in 2016. At this rate it's going to take eons to get to laser guns and hover cars.

    • +1

Its only 25W TDP.. thats why its a dual core i7

      • Yep it's a heat issue hence desktops perform better as they can put in better cpu forsame money

    • +4

Not sure why you got down voted, don't we all want lasers and hover cars sooner rather than later?

      • Same reason the people who comment in the cheap slate threads that 2GB of ram isn't enough get downvoted.

It is what it is, that's the product, this deal isn't for a quad core Dell Inspiron 13.

    • Don't forget that 1080p screens still doesn't come Standard on low end mobile devices which is pathetic considering how old the technology is. Yet companies are crying their sales are going going down. It's time they stop trying to milk consumers and they might see a change.

      • Not offering what you want isn't "milking consumers".

        • Yeah but offering inferior products at premium prices is….'its HD what more would you want'

  • Will this laptop play games like league of legends well?

    • -3

Nope. Stay away from "Intel HD Graphics 520 with shared graphics" if you want to think about gaming. One might argue that "Intel graphics are powerful enough now" etc. but the simple answer is No. You don't want to be stuck with no dedicated graphics in case you desire to play more games in future.

      • +6

i7 shared graphics aren't great, but it will absolutely play League of Legends at medium settings. I've played Starcraft 2 on a very similar device with no issues.

        • How about GTA5 @ medium settings?

      • +1

One might argue that "Intel graphics are powerful enough now" etc. but the simple answer is No.

Very uninformed answer because Intel Iris Pro iGPU offers performance that is equivalent to low or mid range discrete cards.

        • Read my comment again, I am talking about gaming in general not only a specific game. That was the whole point of saying "One might argue that Intel graphics are powerful enough". And you did just that.

    • +2

      ignore alikazi
Simple answer is yes it will play LOL well! skylake core i7 and hd graphics is more than enough for that game, even an i5 is enough!

      • -4

Read the comment again. Did I mention LOL anywhere? I am talking about gaming in general.

        • +1

You didn't mention LOL anywhere, but the question was "Will this play LOL well?". Your answer was "Nope." followed by an elaboration. Read your comment again.

        • -6

@illumination: So your literal assumption is that the OP is only ever going to play LOL his entire time. Nothing else? Ever? Also, the question was games LIKE LOL. Dota 2 is the same genre as LOL. It needs dedicated graphics. Isn't then your recommendation of shared graphics wrong?

        • +1

@alikazi: Oh I have no expertise on this so I am not sharing my opinion on it (cause I have no idea). I am not trying to say whether you're wrong or right. I didn't recommend anything.

However, based on these two comments here and here, it can play LOL (and games such as LOL, such as Dota 2 to use your example).

I am replying to you because you are telling people to read your comment again, when your initial comment clearly says "No" in response to the question asked yet you keep somehow insisting you were not referring to specific games.

Sure, maybe that was your intention but the "nope" at the very front of your comment actually gives an answer which contradicts what other people are saying.. and then you come back and keep saying "No, I didn't say it can't play LOL".

It's just a bit ridiculous that you've clearly said "no it can't play LOL", yet despite your comment being up there in black and white, you somehow expect people to know that you are referring to games in general..

  • Heck. I bought Lenovo e460 2 weeks ago ( haven't even received it yet). This deal looks way better…

    • I think you missed the deal/price error on the e460 from earlier this week. i7, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd, full hd and dedicated amd graphics for $899 delivered (minus 8% cashback…)
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/257747

      • Yep, I saw this deal but was too late.
Errrrr. At least, I didn't forget about cash back…

    • I was same. Although I didnt want touch and prefer integrated graphics. I bought a 480gb ssd for it for $135 (amazon deal). The hdd arrived from usa earlier ths week…

They tried to deliver the lenovo today at 3.30pm on a weekday. Great bloody timing… Right on the school run.

  • They all lose me at "Intel HD Graphics 520 with shared graphics". Just a few hundred extra and you get dedicated graphics.

    • +4

But a lot depends on your use-case. I never play games, and don't care about video editing etc. I'd rather spend the extra money on more RAM, bigger storage etc. To each their own I guess.

      • -1

Even video editing isn't going to suffer with an internal GPU.

        • Yeah, actually integrated graphics is significantly worse for editing/rendering. By a huge margin.

        • -1

@c0balt: Rubbish. Rendering, maybe. But editing it would make very little difference. All you are doing is showing images on a screen.

        • +1

          @cakesy:

Ummm I'm an editor.. there's these things called graphics, titles, effects, transitions, grading, balancing and more that most definitely need to be rendered in real time to be displayed. Start loading these up and you will start to drop frames on even the greatest GPUs available. Also there are codecs out there that actually need high end GPUs just to be debayered and displayed (you ever heard of RED?)

Anyone who has edited videos would know this, so you have never edited?

Suggesting editing is just displaying videos shows that you have very little idea of what editing is. You really, really have no idea what you are talking about, Sorry. You may want to check my post history before making a suggestion about what I do or don't know when it comes to devices in the TV/Film production space.

Now go ahead and reverse your neg, unless you want to be seen as a spiteful person in addition to having no clue about what 'editing' requires.

        • +3

          @c0balt:

Guys, if you are going to neg - please at least say why the advice is wrong.

As is, Cakesy's advice could make an ozbargainer purchase a laptop for editing that it will preform poorly at compared to a laptop with a dedicated GPU, and you will just be helping that happen.

        • -1

@c0balt: Look mate, unless you are a professional editor, assisting Spielberg, you don't need a separate graphics card. If you edit the odd movie, chuck some simple effects and titles on there, you do not need it.

If you are into rendering over your videos every day, then sure, get a dedicated GPU.

        • @cakesy:

Even basic editing, editing for school or uni needs a dedicated GPU. Rendering isn't something you want to sit and wait for, it's something an editor needs to be done in real time. There is no compromise there no matter if you work for Spielberg or thowing together a clip for a school project. Then on top of all that when it comes time to transcode and publish your edits (which is the point of editing, to make a new cut and publish it) you need high end gear to cut down on the silly amount of time it can take to render out the file.

To suggest integrated is fine is some really negative and bad advice for anyone considering getting into editing.

You need to know when you are out of your element and you are out of your element. Have some decency.

For some reason it's not adding to my cart. Just stuck loading on 'Add to Cart' :(

Are you using a javascript blocker like noscript?

      • Nope, nothing like that at all. Tried mobile version, Edge/Chrome/Firefox. I'm trying to create an account and it won't do that either (404 pages). Maybe their website is broken?

    • same here

    Good find OP.
is this comparable to this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255955

And how about the warranty, international warranty?

  • great price!
the latest inspiron 13 looks much better though…

  • +1

anyone is actually buying it? can't put it in cart, not processing at all!

  • showing as US $619.99 for me?????

    • +1

      add delivery

  • That's an amazing price for some damn nice specs.

  • Did anyone actually manage to order one?
I was initially getting the 'Add to cart' issue others also had, now the button works but an error comes up saying that a qty of 1 exceeds available stock. Presume it's sold out already….

I purchased a Toshiba from Adorama eBay and it arrived in good time. But after two months the glue and connectors between LCD and screen backing started to come apart and the hinge on the right hand side started to fail. There is no international warranty on Toshiba (I don't know about Dell) so I had to purchase international credit to call US 1800 support and now I'm in a dispute whether I am entitled to warranty support. I brought it into a Toshiba service centre in AUS last week and the agent told me it was a warrantable repair (that would be covered in Australia within 12 months of purchase) but since my warranty is in the US I'm required to go to them. But when I called them up they claimed limited warranty repairs are on hard drive failures only and they are not willing to fix the casing/screen (even though there is no physical damage to the screen or computer, just that the casing is loose because the adhesive is failing). I have not opened up the unit, or tampered with the screen so I'm going to elevate it with a supervisor late tonight (when I called the supervisor had gone for the day - US time) because this is clearly a manufacturer defect. I'm prepared to pay $80 postage but not $200+ repair on a computer that is a few months old with no damage to it inside of warranty period!

Just a caveat about buying computers online from O/S! Many also reported issues with the touchpads on the Toshibas.

      handy to know thank you

  • anyone know if its a backlight keyboard and what the battery life is like?

  • Great deal because I just needed this plus 1

  • Apologies dumb question - If I buy laptop from Amazon US under $1000 audio. What are the other taxes I am liable to? E.g VAT or Custom duty etc. Is this rule same for new, refurbished and used products?
    Thanks

  • what does the 2-in-1 stand for?

    • +1

Its a laptop. Then if you fold the laptop right onto itself. You can use it as a tablet.

So a laptop and tablet in 1 device.

      • thanks. sounds cool.

  • Is this ok to use in Australia because of the difference in voltage?

    • +1

Going by the various laptops i have owned over the years. If the power pack/charger is multivoltage. Which almost all are these days. All you need is to change the cable end or use an adator if the cable is fixed to the charger.

  • +2

    Warranty covered in AUSTRALIA???????

How does that compare? I just searched around for similar product and noticed this for $899, same processor and ram but comes with a dedicated gpu.

    • +1

      Bit of an apples to oranges comparison - that's a 15.6", 2.3+kg laptop, this is a 13.3", 1.56kg one.

  • Anyone know how long the battery life is on this machine?

  • Anyone know if the RAM is able to be upgraded or if it's soldered in? No good for me if RAM is not expandable.

Edit: Found a service manual for one of the 7000 series models

    https://content.abt.com/documents/64901/I73484288SLV_manual.…

It looks like this particular model only has 1 SODIMM so 8GB seems to be the max ram :(

  • +1

Bought the i3 version of this few months back from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237936 (ended up $552 after coupon+CR+TRS). Upgraded to 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD first thing. Handles everything I throw at it but I game on my desktop so GPU isn't a concern for me.

How do you ozbargainers reckons it compares to the recent Lenovo deal, similar price. But that had the dedicated GPU and more ram, does this have any redeeming specs?

    • Touchscreen & Tablet mode. Possibly a bit thinner and lighter. Better case quality.

  • Thanks Op just bought one. My ultrabook has given me 5 years. Happy with the return but high time for an upgrade. Couldn't pass this up!

  • anyone knows the warranty status?

  • Ordered on Saturday (Australia time), received on Tuesday morning. That's pretty quick. 5 stars for shipping to Adorama

    • Wow that's way faster than the 10-15 days quoted.

      • +1

Yes.faster than Aus post express post from melbourne to sydney.

        • How are you liking it? What's the battery life like? Considering purchasing one as a cheaper alternative to an XPS13

        • I really liked it considering the price in Australia for similar Dell is $1800-1900 compared to $950 AUD with this deal.

    • do you know whats the warranty like in aust?

      • I don't think warranty is International. But even if you buy from Australia, warranty would be 1 year local warranty. With this deal if anything goes wrong in the first year (Highly unlikely with Dell's quality), I am ready to ship it back to Adorama to get it fixed. might cost $100-150

  • What a smashing price!

  • Nice laptop, got it few days ago:

    I like:
    fairly small and lightweight
    fast delivery
    under 1000AUD
    screen is very good
    tablet mode is handy
    is quiet

    Not so good:
    touchpad feels cheap

    Average:
    Battery life so far (5hrs)
