anyway reported.. let the mods decide

  • Edit: I got it wrong, sorry, I don't use Facebook so I was looking at the wrong number.

  • 1,046 already so that means at least $10. so whats the point disapproving this ?

    • My mistake, I retracted my neg.

  • I don't think you can "become a member" anymore? You can only choose to like something?

    • Yeah they changed that on Facebook not too long ago

  • Deal is now active. The deal is valid.

Mod, could you please help to update the post with latest offer infomration, thanks a lot

  • Wow!
At this rate, free 50AUD for sure!!

  • +2

So does the $x "worth of Shopping Square Vouchers" actually mean you get say $10

ie. are you actually given a $10 voucher or is it dodgy like cdwow where $10 "worth" of vouchers = $2 x 5 vouchers?

Also is there any min spend to use said vouchers? ie $10 voucher but $50 min spend

    • -3

i think as long as they give out the voucher for free, i dont mind which way it is, be it $2 x 5 or $5 x 2 or $10 x 1
clicking 'like' on facebook doesnt cost me any afterall

      • +7

well it does matter if it affects the price of something you purchase. $2 vouchers would be worthless at such a store (since you can find most things cheaper elsewhere). It is also deceitful if you promote $10 vouchers if you are giving much less.

Yes, it may not cost me anything to click "like" on facebook but I won't promote a company if they are baiting customers with such amazing "free money".

Also it is not free if there is a minimum spend so I think they are valid questions…

        • -1

On the Facebook page they say "Congratulations everybody! Now keep clicking and sharing to reach 2000 and the $20 vouchers!" which hopefully implies they are vouchers for the full amount

  • How do you become a member?

  • just click the Like button. No need for anything else. Apart from a valid Shopping Square account to make your purchases, of course.

    • +2

but my facebook email and shoppingsquare email is different? can i still get the voucher?

      • didn't even have a SS account before I clicked Like.
        Do they have any restrictions?

  • what's the likelihood of 10,000 people clicking?

    • +1

imho, could happen, these things go up exponentially once they hit the front page of ozb

  • so if 1999 people vote in the end, does that mean only the first 1000 get $10 and the second 999 get diddly squat?

  • +6

Haha they're so cheap, they don't make it:
    3000 fans - $30
    4000 fans - $40
but instead they jump to 10000 fans for $50 voucher.
Should be 10000 fans for $100 voucher (yes $1 million but still it follows the trend :D)

  • +2

very interesting way to promote their business, I like it :)

    • -1

Similar to LTS (they're also going to have FB exclusive deals)… and yet we flame LTS for doing business this way.

  • Any idea on what would happen if you wanted to buy something that was $50 if you had a $50 voucher. Would you only have to pay for shipping?

    • +1

      Isn't that how vouchers work?

    • No, send me the voucher and another $50 and I'll sort it out for you. :)

    • You'll still have to pay shipping. Only a handful of their items have Free Shipping with it

  • +1

This sound true good to be true…I bet there are lots of T&C to use the voucher/s!!!

    • +3

i'm going to screenshot the deal for later. just in case.

    • "Any of these vouchers can be used on absolutely anything you want in Shopping Square!"

I sure hope so… but you may be right.

      • turns out "absolutely anything you want " means absolutely anything except promotional items, postage, small orders (minimum spend), and woe if you have bro/sis or sharemates (1 claim per household).

        • Isn't this misleading? How can they get away with it?

  • Hopefully now that Origin is over, more people will flood to OB and see this deal and like. We're at 1772 ATM.

  • Sounds alright to me

1,774 People Like This so far

  • who cares just liked it people! no harm!

  • I wonder how much of a gamble they are taking if it is indeed real and they do end up getting the 10,000 fans. Thats half a million $ spent on advertising, AFAIK the markup on electronic gear isn't that much so wonder how long it'll take them to start seeing returns.

Anywho I'll join the group and see what happens

  • +1

Could someone please explain what Shopping Square is? Are there delivery fees?

    • +3

      There most certainly are!!!

  • +3

whats the bet the vouchers are unable to be used on certain products… specifically electronics and computer items.

    • On their Facebook page it says, "Any of these vouchers can be used on absolutely anything you want in Shopping Square!", so should be able to use it towards anything.

It also says you get 10, 20, or 50 dollars 'worth' of vouchers, which to me sounds like they will be giving something like the 2 x $5, or 4 x $5 vouchers previously mentioned.

  • +2

Became a fan. Just curious, how are they going to administer giving them out? Say if 12,532 people become a fan, are they not going to give the vouchers to the last 2532? How will they know who the first 10k are?

    • I have a strong suspicion that it won't be automatic and it will be first come first serve.

      • +1

I don't think Facebook keeps a log of who came first or last so Marlboro Man may be right i that respect

        • FreshFM in Adelaide recently had a promotion like this, it was a pain because they couldn't tell you hit "like" first…

  • 2000 people has been passed now.

  • How do they pay you?

    • +3

      With peanuts!

  • +5

Even though this deal is active, is it not considered advertising since people are voting positive for the deal but don't actually know 100% what they will be receiving?
Shouldn't we be given exact details of what the actual deal is? ie is it actually going to be a $x voucher with no extra terms and conditions? as per my post above, it should be made clear what people are voting positive for should it not mods?

Otherwise this could open up a gateway for advertises who get there free advertising through vague offers/wording but then short change end users with more specific conditions terms (such as $2 x 5 = $10 or $10 voucher with min spend of $50 or only valid on not tech items etc. etc.) who may or may not have voted positive given this information.

  • +4

So if I'm between 2000-99999, I won't get anything unless 100000 is reached? won't that stop people from voting for it after 2000 has passed?

    • exactly another point, people need to know what they are voting for.

  • +4

I'm beginning to think this is just a ploy to get their name out there on Facebook.

    • +2

      Oh really?

  • +5

If you ask me, any business giving away 500k merely for promotional purposes would have to be nuts, there must be some catch, but I liked it anyways :P

    • well said

  • +2

wonder how many fan's they'll lose after it hits 10k (or if it DOESNT hit 10k)

    • all of them - employees? also = the number of people who will boycott apus/SS in the future.

  • hehe, am i dreaming? or is it too good to be true…

  • So we don't get any coupons till they hit 10K ? not even $20
since they haven't mentioned an end date ….
another 7K to go … give it a week and it'll happen

    • They have actually, they posted this comment:

"We officially stop and tally members at 00:00 1st June. Afterwards we will notify you of the release time and date for the link to recoup the vouchers. So keep coming back and checking with us on this page! Hope this helps."

I bet they've deliberately made the timeframe small enough so that it can't be reasonably expected for it to hit 10k.

Also, can the owners of those pages delete fans?

  • they'll probably just jack up the price and let u use the voucher haha

  • +6

It'd be nice if ShoppingSquare were banned from ozbargain if they attach any unpopular terms to these vouchers. Actually I might reserve my vote so I can vote negative if/when they do this.

  • +6

I've "liked" their page because free money is always a good thing.

I've bought a few things from Shopping Square, however if this turns out to be a bait-and-switch where we receive inferior vouches (or outrageous conditions), I'll boycott Shopping Square (and APUS), just as I did Catch Of The Day. I think anyone that agrees should do the same to send a message that businesses (and individuals) can't keep doing this to us.

Also, regarding how redeeming works, the latest comment says:

"Hi Alex! We officially stop and tally members at 00:00 1st June.
Afterwards we will notify you of the release time and date for the
link to recoup the vouchers. So keep coming back and checking
with us on this page! Hope this helps.".

This implies that noone actually needs to "like" their Facebook page since the link will be made public. It doesn't sound like a first come, first serve deal for liking it, but whoever can come back and click the link the fastest.

This smells like a disaster. I hope danilochan is reading this thread and taking in the comments.

My vote is reserved until June 1st.

    • +2

smells like a disaster . YES

they may lose a lot of sales if it dont work

My vote is reserved as well

      • lol fair enough. i can see a disaster coming too.

imho the only way to do this properly would be to export the names of the facebook group to excel, then add it to a database, so that the user signing up must match the name. and/or create a facebook application that cross references you liking it with your shopping square account.

        • +3

can't believe their IT dept. didn't think this before ?
Just assign a unique voucher to the email linked to facebook
I hope the vouchers are linked to account/email otherwise utter chaos

          • @ozblogger: i dont think they can access your email from a "like", should have made an application.

  • +1

Sounds like a bunch of small mediocre vouchers. Questionable deal at this stage.

  • hm, after clicking 'like', what's next? how to get the voucher?

    • +1

You return to Facebook at the end of the week. I think that's when they will announce how many people have signed up, and probably email the vouchers to you. Or put it publicly on the FB front page. Who knows…

      • ok thnx :)

      • if the voucher code is generic… then it'll probably end up on OzBargain… then they'll have to jack up the prices because if it does happen they'll be literally giving away more than $500k.

  • My money is on their prices/shipping going up by at least $20 on the 1st June.

I don't really understand facebook, I clicked "like" at 1300 odd (took a screenie too just in case) but now they are saying they will just post a link and it will be a free for all.

I'm picking this is going to backfire big time, at least a lot of us seasoned ozbargainers still have a neg at the ready.

  • +2

Say I called in some favours from a certain notorious online forum…

I wonder if it's possible for a business to buy insurance for marketing campaigns gone wrong.

  • +2

I'm thinking that you need to purchase something over the value of $200 before you can use the $50!!

  • +4

Everyone take a note of the price of an item you are interested in and see if it changes once the voucher/s are posted.

Would be a good experiment for everyone to take part in.

  • +2

Damn. Got more fans than OzBargain now. Sorry I have no marketing budget to grow our fan-base :P

Edit: Oh I've also "Liked" their page.

    • Bet you they won't hit 10k - the promo was very carefully designed to look much more generous than it actually is…

      • Why not? Already nearly half way there after less than 2 days with 3-4 days still to go.

        • +3

The growth won't be linear because the distribution of reward is not linear. There is a much higher "risk" for those between 2001 - 10000, making it less likely that people will join at the same rate as the first 2k.

Plus, I can't imagine an outfit like ShoppingSquare having a $500k marketing budget. That's more than likely to be a double-digit percentage of their annual turnover.

  • Very interesting marketing campaign. I like it!

  • I reckon, that the voucher will only be available until the 30th June… EOFYS….

  • +1

Good advertising for $40,000. Another 3 more days to go to reach 10,000. if not then the first 2000 people with be sent $20 vouchers. This makes their giveaway $40,000. But too also recoup that their prices would also go up so i thing they might be able to recoup another $20,000. Thats a total spent of $20,000 for advertising and a facebook fan club of maybe 7,000. Thats huge.

Nice campaign but sure they are going to be hated by those left out for sure.

    • +2

Exactly. SS should be hoping that this doesn't backfire on them - particularly if their means of distributing the vouchers turns out to be as inelegant as people here are guessing it will be.

  • +3

    My guess: $50 = 5 x $10 with min $50 spend.
An old saying: if it is too good to be true, then it probably is too good to be true.
I would just love to be wrong though… :))

    • +3

I would love you to be wrong also but just say your right on the money and this is just a marketing scam. Who is ready to negative the hell out of Shopping Square? LOL

I am pretty sure they will not give a whole $20 voucher (maybe $5x4 with $50 min spend?) as they have been telling everyone otherwise they would have replied to this page (see my posts above) to clarify it already.

Also I know the Shopping Square rep (danilochan) has been reading this page also since he voted positive on this "bargain".

I call boycott if they have dodged us!

      • +3

danilochan try to avoid comment on this post…that is the sign of something dodgy about this promo… everyone watch out.
I think there will flood of -ves on 31st May.

  • well my local pub had a facebook promo, where if you "liked" there page you get a free $50 drink voucher on your birthday they reached there limit fairly quickly. 5000, that was $250,000 of free p!ss… i think they reckon that a high percentage couldnt be arsed going there on there birthday.

  • At 10,000 yet. Don't want to log it to FB unless it is worth it.

    • According to the rules (not that it matters if the speculation in this thread is correct) if you join after it hits 10k you'd be too late. Their "prize" is capped at $500,000 which means the first 10k people to join.

      • So has it reached 9,500 yet ?

        • +1

4932 as of just now. Their marketing girl can sleep soundly tonight.

  • not yet

  • +4

I reckon they'll prolly get a bill from Facebook. Facebook sends invoices to commercial entities who use it to promote their business.

  • danilochan = made redundant employee

  • +2

Reserving my vote on this one:) Will wait and see.

  • +5

I think it is going to be a PAIN for ShoppingSquare to go through pages after pages of fans on Facebook to work out who is the first 10k, what their email addresses are, what their corresponding ShoppingSquare accounts are, etc, and how to deliver the vouchers, etc.

    • This gonna be fun for SS but I don't want to be their employees :)

  • 5063 now. doubt it'll ever reach 10k

  • I can't even remember if I got in in the first 2k. I think I did….
