Telstra Bigpond Naked ADSL2+ 25GB for $59.95

292

Bigpond are now offering naked ADSL2+ for a trial period (believed to be approximately 5 to 6 weeks) for $59.95 for 25GB (uploads counted) with no excess charges (shaped to 68kbps).

Before you start voting negative because other ISPs can beat this deal (which they obviously can on different infrastructure), this deal is only for those who have access to Telstra wholesale on their exchange!

Added benefits of this naked plan is that you keep your home phone with no line rental and you can call emergency 000 if needed plus you can keep your current landline number and continue to receive calls.

The official link doesn't have any prices but call Bigpond on 1800 825 311 for more details or to sign up (you may or may not have success with 1800 827 699 - the number listed on the official page)

Anyway, I'm not new here, so please be harsh. :)

    Soooo checking this out :)

  • I like the sounds of this… but need to investigate further… Especially as I essentially can only get ADSL2+ with Telstra… Cheers

    • +1

If that's your only option you may as well check it out.

  • hahah what a deal!

  • +1

I never thought that I would see this.

  • there are still quite alot of ppl cant get any other isp other than telstra ie MYSELF…we were doomed now this just sweeten up the deal abit…so if u are on tpg, good for you.

  • +1

Also, there is no excess usage charges… just slows to 64kbs.. I just dont like the idea of a 24month contract

    • Ah yep, forgot to mention that - edited. Apparently Bigpond are also looking to change this to 128kbps which would be a bit better.

      • -1

You can watch Bigpond TV, 24/7 News, Sports and Music Channels.

        • Anything good from the unmetered stuff? I can see Bigpond movies being beneficial but anything else?

          • +2

@ShortyX: Steam is unmetered on Bigpond

            • @ESEMCE: Steam is unmetered on Internode.

              • +1

@You and Me: That's all good and well, but this is a BigPond deal.

I'm currently with Internode, and they are great, but only ADSL1 in my area. At the moment I'm paying $50/month Internode broadband + $20 line rental with Telstra = $70/month.

With this deal for $60, not only is it cheaper, I'll be getting at least 5-10 times the internet speed I am currently achieving.

For my needs there is absolutely no better deal or alternative out there.

    What a deal !!

PS: Sarcasm on Ozbargain at all-time high

  • I signed up yesterday - great deal for people like me stuck in a Telstra only exchange.

I never thought I'd see naked internet in the NT!

  • +2

I thought that the point of Naked ADSL was to take Telstra out of the equation.

I appreciate that Telstra is making an effort to be competitive, however, I will not yet forgive them for their:

    • arrogance
    • anti-competitive behaviour
    • exploitation and extortion of the most vulnerable people in society

    "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

    • -1

      Hahahahahahha!!!
Take Telstra out of Business = Bring Australia's Telecom Infrastructure DOWN.

You have to give praise where it's due.

NEW CEO = New STRATEGY for Telstra.

Leave the past BEHIND and ENJOY THE FUTURE!

      • Agreed…they are really making an effort.

The new cap $49 cap plan offering $400 worth of calls/text and 200MB data is pretty competitive!

      • @JJBYPC You are making alot of assumptions in your post.

  • +6

i feel sorry for those stuck on telstra, if there were not people like you, this deal would be worthy for a negative vote :(

    • Thanks for the support :)

  • +2

The 68kb shaping is ridiculous. Even with 128kbps shaping web sites take ages to load, the only sites that you can only visit are pretty much text-only.

  • +1

Seems they forgot to put a zero after the 5 in 25gig then it would be a decent package. Ill give it the thumbs up as its a deal for people that are clueless and like Telstra i.e ma and pa packages, not the OPs fault Telstra hasnt caught up with the rest of the ISPs in Australia/World/Universe.

    • the problem is that telstra have the name, eveyone think they are the quality ISP, with no fuss… which… they have there market thats for sure, and its such a shame… then there is the problem where they wont let anyone else install equipment in there exchanges so are pretty much forcing people to have to use them…neg for me… but may be better than what people are currently getting from them.

id say the move by optus to increase bandwith has prompted this.

optus dont have the luxury that telstra do with it being the only exchange available, or dumb, ma and pa types that don't understand shopping around….

    • Wrong.. this is for people who have no option but Telstra…
They don't have the option of a TPG or iiNet because those ISP's are too stingy to put in a DSLAM or Telstra says there's no room at the exchange.

      • +2

In that case, stay with ADSL1. Dealing with Telstra is not worth the hassle.

  • Everyone, wait a few weeks (till the 16th). Apparently there are some new plans coming out with Telstra… some pretty decent plans, for once!

    • You mean the new bundled plans?

  • Wow I liked the phone part of the offer. I know many ppl just don't want to lose their number. This way they can keep their number, receive calls for free and use voip to make calls. Only phone part saves them $20- $30 a month.

  • Called bigpond. They said, they got 2 plans:

    1) With landline allowing incoming calls and emergencies only
    or
    2) No telephone line at all (Just like other Naked DSLs).

Both are same rates - $59.95 (24 months).

    surprisingly, this beats iinet's 20GB plan !

    • You mean the only out calls allowed are 000 (on the landline)?

      • Yes

        • If you choose option 2, how many calls do you get per month and what are the charges?

      • Yes

  • Even with the saving of $20+ on line rental, this is yet another typical rip-off deal from Telstra. No doubt it would be $20 cheaper and with twice the download limit if Telstra hadn't had the monopoly.

    • Agreed, but it's still a better deal (than has previously been available) for people who are stuck with no other option.

    • This is exactly right. It's like giving food to the starving, who are starving because you don't hand out the food. "A sandwich for $100! That's a great deal!!!"

  • +1

    Has Hell Frozen over?
    Telstra offering Naked DSL!!

  • +3

I can only get 2+ with Telstra. With that as my only option, I elect to stay on ADSL1.

  • -2

    Great deal mate!

Leaves iiNet for dead, and TPG, well sure you get a bigger download allowance but whoever downloads over 25gb is either a) doing something illegal, b)a perverted porn abuser or c) an online gaming warrior.

If you wish to vote negative, please clearly explain in which ways the competition exceed this deal. I think there is a lot of 'awww ill just vote negative because its telstra wah wah wah' going on in this thread already.

    • Even with the $10 minimum usage $1 line rental deal on TPG, you get over 100gb more than this deal at the same price ($49.95 + $1 + $10 minimum usage). Not to mention you get a phone line in case you ever need it.

So just because you don't download over 25GB, this is a good deal even though it gives substantially less? That's like saying you get buy 1 get 1 free for a meal, but you can't eat two meals so the deal is trivial.

      • -1

Well yeah, if you cant eat the second meal, what is the point of going to all that effort just to chuck it in the bin.

The majority of intenet users dont use anywhere near 25gb so whats the point of paying for all that padding?

        • +1

Knightelf, you forget that not everyone can get TPG ADSL2+.

    • huh. what about a family where dad watches abc iview/plusseven/fixplay, mom does video blogging and kids stream music and play xbox360/ps3?

      • Such family is living under a rock, and should get out more.

        • +1

So now you're telling what people should or shouldn't do. No wonder you're a Telstra fanboy - birds of a feather!

  • Terrible price lol. Hel$tra ftl.

  • the 24 month contract means all aspect of "value" or savings are lost, since a lot can happen in that time.

so basically its a con as any value savings are basically swept away in the long run.

Telstra wholesale is available as an isp with many other isp's now very cheaply, i am only paying $10 more than this offer yet i get double quota and no contracts…within 24 months this price will go down..and you'd be stuck on a high price telstra plan, and huge fees to break the contract…

    • What plan are you on?

  • +1

    $60 for 25 Gigs!!! what a bargin!!!!

  • Its an ok deal. I'm paying $30 for line rental on iinet so at least its a saving on that cost

    • +1

It is not a bargin! This website isnt for ok deals

  • Terrible deal, with a terrible company with terrible customer service. If I could get naked adsl with anyone else, I would. Stay away!

    • this is perfect for people stuck behind rims, who are tired of paying line rental!

  • i dont think its fair to compare this to tpg. tpgs connection really really sucks, its a big hit and miss - some people get an awsome connection, some people drop out every 2 seconds.

ever played a game with someone on tpg, only to have the game pause every 5min or so?

  • This woud be okay with VOIP calls from a third party. But a bastard for us who just signed telstra's 25GB $49.95 plan plus line rental. Would have preffered this deal as a VOIP user, leaving line rental a sore hole in the pocket. Come to think of it, we ought to grill Telstra for ever even introducing line rental back in 1998!!

    • Ring them up - you should be able to switch over to the naked plan.

      • You were in the same boat right? Guessing you had no trouble?

        • They said I had to wait until I receive the modem package then call back and they'll be able to switch the plan.

  • The ultimate OzBargain value vigilante would take the power into their own hands:

    1. Find some neighbours interested to share a quality connection
    2. Get a fast connection 8-24mbps with chunky download quota +25GB
    3. Get a WiFi router that sports speed limiting/throttling and sports an external aerial connector
    4. Receive $20 per month from neighbours you've connected via WiFi WDS at say 2000 kbps each (enough for each neighbour to run 6 PCs on youtube)
    5. Everyone gets onto VOIP and has a real landline number (DID) direct in dial
    6. Smile ;-)
  • I would have gone for this deal if it wasn't for the $299 connection fee + $99 for wifi modem!

    • +1

Only $299 if a telephone service has not been previously connected at your property. $125 if a previous service existed and a Telstra Tech has to visit.

Just the usual standard charges to get a phone on…

      • I spoke with Telstra this afternoon and they told me its $299 - there is a previous service at my place and they confirmed that. First person I spoke to told me that they don't have naked dsl. I kept insisting that they do and then I was transferred to someone else who said they do have it. I might ring them tomorrow to ask again.

    • There's no charge if you currently have a phone line and you can get the standard modem for free.

  • As Telstra ADSL2 is my only option, I'd consider this if there were say 35-40GB… 25 with uploads counted just isn't quite enough for me to make the switch tho =/ I don't think this deal deserves negs just because people hate telstra and have other better options available.

  • From my understanding, telstra is not allowed to make their metro prices lower than their rural. So they arent counting on your sales. theyre catering for the people who need internet who cant get optus etc cos optus etc choose not invest infrastructure in non profitable areas. telstra has to cover its costs somehow. Telstra generally doesnt have the option of neglecting some parts of the country. Correct me i may be wrong, but if im not, the negs should be removed.

  • +1

All those people saying that Telstra are their only choice for internet I seriously hope you are going to vote Rudd in the election, considering its our ONLY hope of internet for everyone.

(not to mention I don't think Abbott has ANY policies)

    • -1

Vote Rudd and you'll vote in the internet filter.

      • -2

Dont think its such a big deal. you can even opt out if you want. I'd rather have fiber and filter than adsl and no filter

        • You can't opt out, but you can bypass it via proxies/VPN, etc.

Don't mislead people on political 'bargains'

  • -5

I vote negitive as this is a terrible deal and its naked… what if people want phone?

    • +2

Naked usually means no phone…if you want a phone line then don't get naked HOWEVER this Bigpond naked keeps the phone and allows incoming calls and outgoing to 000 only.

  • -2

God there are some effing idiots on this site who can't understand squat.

  • I'm connected to an exchange with ADSL2+ only provided by Telstra. If Telstra was to offer a higher end naked plan, say 100GB for under $80 I would have to think about it. As I have a Telstra Home Line Budget costing me $21/month for the last 4 years without making a single call in that time. That's $1008 I've wasted on a service I don't use.

However it'd take a good saving to win me over as currently I'm on a grandfathered Exetel ADSL1 8000k plan (30GB + Unlimited OP) for $75/month + $21 Phone line.

Glad to see Telstra trialing this but they need to offer something bigger for well under $100 to entice many.

  • -3

Ridiculously awful deal. Surely mods cant let this steaming pile of "bargain" exist. Please delete this marketing spam from the site ASAP.

    • Dam, how did you know I work for Telstra? :)

    • Read people's posts. This is clearly a deal for those who Telstra is the only ADSL2+ provider, which is many Outer Metro/Rural users.

  • So… it's not naked lol.

    • +1

Maybe they should call it Topless Bikini DSL? :)

    • Why is it not naked?

  • @michaelliberty: I don't know if that was directed at me, if so, I have read peoples posts. It doesn't change that fact that this is not a naked service.

    • I was replying to @infinite. You can tell this by the fact that my comment is indented under infinite's comment. (Just like stix's comment is)

And you can tell I am replying to your particular comment because this comment too will be below.

      Hope that helps.

  • -1

I think too many Whingepoolers have crawled out of their huts to make comments not exactly related to the deal. As others have mentioned, if Telstra are your only option, then at least you HAVE an option, which in itself would make it a bargain for those effected.

Instead of falling back on the usual Whingepool rhetoric about Telstra, perhaps when voting negative, state that you're currently on a naked plan with a different ISP and it's cheaper, so people can make an informed decision, rather that having to read inbred biased opinions for something Telstra did to you whilst in your mothers womb.

  • People are not very direct around here, let's try again…

@orbital: My comments are exactly about the deal. Telstra calls this a 'naked' DSL service, which is possibly misleading considering this isn't what a naked service really is. I thought people considering this 'deal' should know the facts, that's how I usually prefer to conduct my business.

    • There is actually two flavours. The product with phone for incoming calls and emergency calls is "Pure DSL". There is also the option to not have this ability, with traditional "Naked DSL" being offered without a dial tone. The enhanced "Pure DSL" product will not cost extra. Just so we have all the facts. :)

  • It's still a poor deal, even if it's the only deal available. I assume there's no valid reason for having such a low shape rate.

    Nothing against Stix though!

  • +2

Telstra do a great job offering services where otherwise they would not be available. More often then not if a service is not offered by another company than it is not profitable. So for those who cannot access any other service should be thankful that the service even exists. So for it to be even somewhat comparable to city rates makes it a bargain. My only complaint is shape rate.

  • So frustrated I have spoken to Telstra 3 times about this deal and get different answers to my questions each time. Now they are telling me that the deal is not actually active they are just seeing how many people are interested and that they can't tell me anymore - they said I have to google naked dsl and there should be a link to the correct phone number to call for the team that are dealing with the trial… WTF?!!!!

  • Where is a link to the site that has the plan details? I see the YouCompare one and the Minimalist Bigpond one, but what about the one with details about the phone?

  • Guess it'll be okay if nothing else is available in your area.

  • -3

Tut tut. Optus is way better.
