  • As this is one of a small number of topics (religion) that triggers some inappropriate behaviour, just a reminder of our commenting guidelines. Trolling, personal attacks and inappropriate comments will lead to bans.

    • +5

But isn't this about culture, not religion?

    • +12

Where were you for this thread?

Or is there a reason one set of beliefs does not warrant the commenting guidelines being followed?

      • Use the report link for any comments you believe violate the commenting guidelines as there are 4 million comments so we don't see them all. I'll have a look at that old thread when I get home.

        • +11

          Not good enough

Reports were made at the time but mods were happy to turn a blind eye. Yet on this thread you are on the front foot.

        • @heal:

Yep, and 30 minutes later I would be out and not commented. We make no apologies for reminding users to be respectful to each other. Again, report any comments you feel violate our commenting guidelines.

        • +1

@neil: The number of times I've reported offensive stuff directed at Aussies & you've done nothing is shocking, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

That will only be good advice when there's some demonstrated equity & parity of treatment for all races & cultures around here…

      • -1

How about the set of beliefs being insulted by that thread which is the theory of evolution? Shouldn't that make the 'deal' against the posting guidelines?

Or is it fine to mock the belief of scientific community and general public?

    • +2

I guess some religions are more equal than others, just how some OzBargainers are more equal than others.

  • +16

Personally, I think it will be much safer just to watch the festival on the news that night… Almost guaranteed there will be a clash there by opposing groups…

    • +43

you're not talking about that other festival nearby where some animals are playing - bulldogs and swans, i believe? :)

      • +1

        Oops… my bad…

      • +4

        well played sir… well played…

      • +1

I doubt jv would be watching cause the magpies aren't playing. S/he probably thinks the season ends in August judging by the way Collingwood have gone the last few seasons.

        • I doubt jv would be watching

          Doggies Doggies Doggies…

          Woof Woof Woof…

        • @jv: strange you're on the doggies bandwagon considering their banner vs Collingwood earlier this season..

        • @veritas_mendax:

the whining out of Eddie's mouth when the Swannies win!

          I doubt he cares…

        • @jv: he will when we win

          winners are grinners… :)

        • +1

@jv: was waiting for a comment :) good on the doggies. Better team won. Just hard to take when you've driven down from Sydney to be at the game

    • TBH, this should have a targeted tag on here.

      • -2

        at people with brains only?

    • na the opposing groups will be watching the footy on tv…hence the programming slot..

  • +3

Umm, festival sounds interesting, but what genius thought it would be a good idea to have it on the one day most Melburnians will be watching a game of footy?

    • Lol, no

Senator Malcolm Roberts can't make it as he's at "the world is flat" convention and Pauline Hanson has a gastroenterologist appointment to see if there are any remains of that Halal sausage she had in Canberra. Shame, they could have both learnt something from this event.

Funny enough I came across this crossword clue last night: "Islam's upset about one Italian dish (6)"

        • +2

"Islam's upset about one Italian dish (6)"

          pizzas ?

        • @jv:
That's what you'd end up if you caused an upset - a pizza history.

    • +10

… So state libraries can run festivals about Australian subcultures? That people know next to nothing about? I don't think we need her in the senate for that.

      • Canberra is like the old infectious disease hospitals - remote from the general population so they don't infect us. Now if only we can close the airport.

        • Humans live there too.

        • The pollies are never there. Just average people

        • @mycosys: hence close the airport :-)

    • We need a racist conspiracy theorist in the Senate?

Misread the first line as SalemFest. Too early to go on a witch-hunt I suppose.

    • I read Salami, I was like WOAH!

  • +6

I read the title as Salami fest which made me lol until I re-read.

  • +1

Is this the same as the sausage fest?

Not sure why expressing ones view of religion would lead to a ban. And no, I'm not Islamophobic, I despise all religions equally.

    • Reread my comment. Discussion is fine. I'll just quote myself:

Trolling, personal attacks and inappropriate comments will lead to bans.

      • +2

If you could explain what an "inappropriate comment" is, that would be helpful.

        • If you aren't sure then don't post. Or pm me before and I can tell you.

        • +2

I'm not sure because it's wholly nondescript. I'm sure all members would like to know because you've threatened to ban people who post within this mystery category of "inappropriate comments".

        • Quite a few examples here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262879

        • +4

          @Chateau: Sounds like 18c!

        • -1

@Ryballs: The mods removed the ability to post negative votes on This threadand This thread. They sure have been inconsistent when it comes to religion.

        • @heal:

Besides being a malicious lie we don't have the ability to lock deals from negative votes. Discussion is fine but please don't slander us.

        • @heal: I'd + you heal if not for the mod neg removal which is apparently untrue. I get so damn tired on a bargain forum of people who think they're justified attacking the beliefs of 85% of others. Even if you've experienced/witnessed something atrocious from a member of a particular faith, condemning all is at least as evil.

And the world - and all its rich tapestry of beliefs and customs - needs more tolerance: not less.

        • +1

@neil: I didn't make a false statement with the intention to deceive. If you read the link I posted above, just below that is this comment. That's where I got the information from and if it is incorrect I am disappointed the mods didn't refute it at the time. To accuse me of both being malicious and lying is incorrect.

          which is apparently untrue

So it seems. I retract my comment. I hope @neil: retracts his accusations now that I have clarified where I got the information from.

        • @heal:

That comment is not correct. Do we block negative voting in deals? No. Do negative votes get revoked? Yes by moderators + the community (neg voting the comment).

I simply said in this deal that trolling, personal attacks and inappropriate comments will lead to bans just like it applies to every other deal. But with religion, politics, caged eggs, bicyclists vs. driver, iPhone vs Android, people tend to get riled up and attack each other. We moderate as consistent as possible but it's not perfect and some decision are line/ball. Not everyone is going to be happy but that's just the way it is with moderated forums.

If you want to discuss further, use Talk with a Moderator so we can improve our guidelines not this deal.

        • @heal: so salty dude. Mods don't have to explain themselves as in depth as they have but they did anyway. If you're always fighting with people, maybe the problem isn't other people?

        • @neil:

          That comment is not correct

Better than calling me a malicious liar. :)

        • @Chateau: And inappropriate to whom?

    • -8

And no, I'm not Islamophobic, I despise all religions equally.

If you despise all religions equally then you despise Islam which makes you Islamophobic - as well as a person with a bee in their bonnet about a whole bunch of other people who happen to believe something.

      Congrats!

      • +6

Isn't a phobia an irrational hatred of something? I can think of so many rational reasons to hate various religions.

      • +2

The bee in my bonnet about religions doesn't even come close to the pterodactyl in the bonnet of those who do believe in an imaginary Almighty and their interference in the lives of nonbelievers.

        Congrats to them!

        • +1

Yep, there's a lot of strife over who has the best imaginary friend. What's staggering though is that some people want to kill you for not believing in theirs.

      • +2

Many religious people are unhappy about the fact that many people are atheists (and other religions), so it's quite fair really, just relax.

I do believe the world would be a better place without religions though, there's just so many conflicts between religions.

      • +2

Yeah! Santa is comming this year, fingers crossed…

Despising religions doesn't mean you despise people..

  • +9

Thanks OP!! We need more events like this to show what Islam is really about. If I was in VIC I'd attend for sure.

    • +7

depends ultimately on what one's interpretation of said faith is.

Exhibit 1- those nut jobs in what's left of Iraq and Syria.

Exhibit 2- my kind Islamic neighbours who bend over backwards to be GGGs to us and those around us.

Both are following the same manual, but ones built a hate machine, the other a peace machine.

      • +2

By 'those nut jobs' I assume you mean the USA army and it's allies

      • What is the deal with ahmadi Muslims. Seems like a lot of other Muslims hate them. I heard the other day a top cleric in Pakistan asked the government to execute Ahmadis? (I actually don't know what the deal is,I thought you might know)

    • +1

      What is Islam really about?

      • -1

Islam means submission in the Arabic language and a Muslim is a submittor to God, the creator of the heavens and earth. God created humans out of clay. His first creation is Adam who happens to be the first prophet of Islam.

        • +1

God created humans out of clay.

Damn right. And don't forget the talking snake, and putting all the animals in the world on a boat, and dead people coming back to life, and all those other scientifically proven facts!

        • -1

@Gershom: can you please get your science to explain why we exist on this earth and for what purpose. Also ask your science what is the meaning of life and what is being the universe and please don't start waffling on about the big bang theory and that humans came from monkeys.

        • +1

@alz: From monkeys? Are you crazy? Everybody knows we're made from clay!

We are here on earth to make others believe in our imaginary friend, and to impose Sharia law. Obviously!

        • +2

          @Gershom: and bargains.

          We are here for bargains.

          bargains.

        • @alz:

well, according to evolution theory, we dont come from monkeys, to simplify, we are sort of cousins. I dont understand how come you believe we are made of clay and we have no resemblances with monkey. religions make people blind. well nobody can argue actually over life, science, evolution, earth with those whose only argument is 'but god says so'

  • I once watched a movie called Slamfest. Had a great ending.

    • The reviews weren't slamming the movie?

    • A WWE or XXX production?

    • Happy ending?

Will the Mufti be there signing autographs?

  • +6

    Great timing!
No wonder Islamic council is out of touch with general community
Why Woould you have an event on grand final day? That too in Melbourne

    • +4

Not everyone cares about the footy. AFL makes me fall asleep.

      • +18

        You may hate footy
As Australia gives the Freedom for you to hate, love dilike footy or stay neutral. I am a migrant and not a footy fan.
But i respect the majority of Aussies who love this game and it is a part of thier life for centuries.
We are not here to Change their way of life. Don'T expect to be respected unless you respect others and what they hold dear.

        • +1

          @niner:
          footys are made of pigskin…

        • +2

Footy is the one with the oval shaped field, right?

        • -1

centuries? you may want to check your history.

and maybe you should take your own advice.

    • As if, for many Melbourne's, AFL is not even on their radar. For those who will be in the city though, the state library is in a prominent place, next to a station, and usually has banners advertising what's going on there. This is a good move, even just to raise awareness of Muslim festivals to those who usually stay in the suburbs.

    • Perhaps the Mufti had an Ozbargain moment and said to himself: "No one will want to hire the venue that Sunday because there all watching footy, I'll hire it for a bargain price"

      • Mufti would require the site to be halal. With all the bacon and alcohol deals, I don't think that will happen.

  • +16

I would highly recommend Salami Festa the following weekend http://melbournesalamifesta.com/ (I did their website). Absolutely bizarre that this event is so similarly named and a week apart. Imagine the confusion if someone turns up a week late thinking it's the same event. Definitely not halal salami on show.

  • +4

    No thanks. Pass.

    Can I come?
