Is this drive locked to it's USB adapter or is it a standard HDD, anyone know?

    • +4

The 3TB drives are fatter, even if you could remove it you can't put it in a standard 2.5" drive slot.

Thanks OP! Just bought one. I'll be setting up my backup tonight before ransomware takeover my PC.

Seagate: Does your data feel lucky punk?

Will this work with a PS4?

    • It should but I believe the rest feature cant be utilised with storage above 2 TB.

    • +4

It won't. You can open the older 1TB/2TB drives but these days the connections are soldered so you can't remove them. The 3TB drive is also thicker than the standard ones. Unless PS4 supports external storage? I'm not sure as I don't own one but I have opened a 2TB to put in a PS4 and the 3TB is definitely bigger.

aint seagate 3tb HDD the sweet spot in guaranteed to fail within a year?

    • Completely agree. Since this one's got 3yr warranty, I might need another one to back this up. lol

    • I had a WD 3TB go within two days. I don't trust any of these 3TB drives. I guess they need to put more platters in which leads to a bigger chance of failure.

High capacity ssd drives can't come soon enough.

      • I have a WD 3TB, what happen to yours? Did you try to get a new one using warranty?

        • +1

Yes, I needed to contact WD directly but did a warranty return with fairly minor hassle. Replacement is currently running fine but I honestly don't trust these larger drives now so it's strictly a backup drive.

      • +3

To be fair, though, most hard drives will fail either within 1 week (they were defective to begin with), or way past their warranties. So failing within 2 days is more expected than, say, 2 years, and doesn't speak much of a drive's failure rate.

Well my 2tb wd just started dying this week, come.to think of it. It whirrs badly/noisily and gives me a strobing light. I'm using via powered hub, so it's not power, plus that noise is a noise of dying. Can still access from PC, but will bin it I think. I'll double check the age, but about 2-3 years old. I have one more 1tb WD. Also died. Was the 12mm version of the 1tb, died ages ago.

Needless to say, giving Seagate a run for a while :)

        • @w8: From what I researched though (Not recently so unsure of any changes) Seagate has the overall higher breakdown rate out of the HD companies. With yes the 3TB with the worst cases but funny enough 4TB from everyone lasts better. I am hoping you do get a good Seagate one, though! Also, SDD can still be prone to breaking just obviously fewer chances of.

        • @w8:

My 1 TB WD Elements portable drive was doing the same thing a year or so ago. Surprisingly reformatting it brought it back to life. Obviously I can't say it'll work for everyone, but may be worth a try if you haven't already

I bought a 2TB portable drive over a year ago and still in excellent condition.

      • +2

        Because that's a 2tb not 3tb

  • The 3TB portable drive is made in Thailand.

So were a couple of my mates - the point being?

      • +6

        It's a reliable drive.

    • Just picked one up. Made in China. Finger crossed. Been a Seagate loyalist.

  • just wondering….these drives are portable…so if I put them in my backpack and jogged to school….will it survive all the vibrations and maybe occasional light bump on the floor??

3TB is alot of data when fully used….just afraid when it fails…then all the data lost is unretrievable.

    • If your data files are so important then you should have several copies of backups.

    • I regularly take my portable hard drives out and they survive. However, I admit that I am very careful with my belongings.

    • If you're going to be taking a drive around like that, you're better off taking around cheap solid state storage, such as SD cards or USB keys.

A Portable Hard Drive is useful basically in the following circumstances:

      • You don't want to plug in an external expansion drive (e.g. for a mac, xbox, or router) with its own power supply.
      • You want to move large backup files between a small office and home (or something like this).
      • You want a storage device that can be carried on flights and left in hotel rooms during the day.
      • You are an IT consultant who has over 1TB of .iso installation files and VMs, which are used regularly (although the Samsung T3 is now preferred for these guys)
      • You want a media storage device that can be taken out occasionally for holidays, etc.

These drives are susceptible to mechanical shock as you suspect, and must be treated with care. They will not survive a few jogs, let alone a month of average school days. I would strongly recommend investing in a SD/MicroSD card or USB key instead. If you want media storage for around the home, this is probably ideal for plugging into a good home router.

  • Bought in store for $139

Anyone know if there will be any probs ntfs formatting this to put movies on for someone to watch with a wdtv and use on Mac OS X?
The box doesn't mention Mac compatibility. Is that because drives bigger than 2tb use gpt?

    • +3

Mac OSX can read from NTFS perfectly fine.

If you want to write to NTFS you will likely need to install a driver/utility to enable this.

Tuxera and Paragon NTFS are paid apps that allow this.

Otherwise you can use this free app if you want to spend a few minutes of work to save yourself ~ $30.
https://github.com/osxfuse/osxfuse/wiki/NTFS-3G is the dev page, instructions are on there for installation. Terminal use is required where the others are all click on a dmg style install.

      • +4

The other cross platform alternative between Windows and OSX is exFAT. Although, it's obviously a far less robust format than NTFS!

        Just stumbled upon this http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/item/ntfs-dri…

It's a free Paragon driver for Seagate, Maxtor, and some other external drives. Just tried it out myself on this drive and it works fantastic.

        • I have been using this tool for a long time. It works very well, but yes not all brands are supported.

  • Has anyone ordered successfully from Officeworks to an Auspost parcel locker?

    • They have a business relation with Fastway couriers for there mailman service, so just guessing here but they probably wouldnt use Australia Post for these deliveries…

      • I was under the impression their delivery was done by Toll.

I remember I bought that 3tb portable hard drive from Oficeworks on 3rd of May this year for $119aud

  • Cheers. My one from here has just died, so looking for something to replace it. Although $79 would be the sweet spot :p

  • This is actually a really good drive. I was testing mine out last weekend and I get around the 100MB/s transfer speed. 3 year warranty is a bonus. Just remember to photocopy your receipts as they tend to fade.

  • Hi there. Just bought in store for $115. Price drop due to reliability issues or maybe they making lots of profit from all those sales. Had 16 more in stock at my local.
