Extra 10% off huh. Masters must have too much stock left and in crisis mode. I was at the local Masters yesterday and there was way too much stock for what is supposed to close down by December.

    • +17

Their discounts aren't that substantial right now. Just waiting for them to have Dick Smith level sales

    • +2

50% sale might move some stocks. Other than that stocks are still too expensive at mere 10 or 20% discounts.

    • +1

I was at bunnings today, talking to one of the workers about Masters and their "sale". He told me that whatever stock is leftover, it's going to be bought by mitre 10

      • Mitre 10 won't touch stock

    • -2

Visited twice since closing down announced. Got nothing. Quality is not as good as Bunnings generally. 10% discount only. Price is way too high. Even with an extra 10% is not worth it considering no return soon. Won't go back even 50% off.

  • +6

Their closing down sales are just as awful as their regular sales. What gives?

    • +8

Prices are too high that's what gives.

      • +8

Agree, price points were designed to be discounted to start with, same as Dick Smith.
Always 10% off Woolies docket plus regular $20 off $100+ giftcard bonuses and sales.
The first rounds of closing down sales have just been baiting. The real clearance happens by trading for 6 months without restocking.
By the time any real discounting happens there will only be junk left that had 1000% markup to start with.

As soon as I heard it was being managed by the same mob that did the Dick Smith closing sales I got un-excited.

    • +1

I got 50% off blinds early in the year and that made them (double roller blinds) far cheaper then anywhere around.

  • Ummm, don't worry about them too much, they are fine. What doesn't sell will go to bunnings and some stores will be made into bunnings once masters closes.

    • +6

      Bunnings won't touch their stock.

      • +3

Some Masters name-brand stock has already resurfaced at Bunnings.

      • -2

They have almost all the same brands and products, it was on the news that bunnings is taking their stuff and some stores when they die.

        • +4

The news also reports Costco taking over masters sites. Yet Costco have no intentions at this stage. Bunnings will however take on around 17 sites, and of those approx half are Bunnings relocating to a newer and bigger premise.

A wholesaler may offload stock to Bunnings, stock that never made it to an actual store. Cut their losses while they can. A wholesaler to masters was required to carry 6 months of stock in their own warehouse

  • +4

The only time worth going is in mid November where all the bargains are found.

  • +2

    Meh.

  • +6

The real problem for me now is that its a trip to my nearest Masters but I have no idea if they will even have anything I want once I get there.
    So - no point.

    • I hear you, I'd love to know whether either of the two closest stores have something I want but they're both 40 minute drive round trip away…

      • I did the 40 minute drive last week and everything I wanted was still more expensive than Bunnings and in some cases more expensive than masters usual price before the closing down sale, let alone their old sale prices. I was very disappointed.

      • +1

Exactly, the phantom firesale at dick Smith's kind of worked because people could pop in while they were doing their shopping. No one's going to drive to masters on the faint chance they could buy something cheap.

  • +1

Now the pricing is attractive on kitchen appliances, a lot of stock is running out.

I was eyeing off a split system that stores had stock last weekend. Now 5 local stores sold out. Lucky I didn't because I would feel cheated with this extra 10% off 😂

    • When I did my research for some kitchens appliances ( 2 weeks ago ). I found I would be saving anywhere from between $60 to $160, mind you I noticed masters has some older models of appliances so could have spent a little extra to get newer models. I would prefer a physical store that's not closing down for possible warranty issues. I would think about it if I was saving $300 or more.

  • +11

Just remember it will be 10% off the already discounted price. So if a $100 item is currently 50% off ($50) an extra 10% off the total purchase is on the $50 ($5) not 10% of $100. Just so there are no nasty surprises at the checkout.

(thanks thebargainhunter for the explanation in the last deal).

    • That should be wrong. Ts & Cs state discounts off 'original' ticketed prices. But of course, it is Masters!

  • +1

Broad question, many BBQ's left in stores?

    • There was about 15 different ones at my local. waiting for the discount to be higher before I pull the trigger on a char broil

    • There were heaps last weekend. Bought one for a birthday present, couldn't wait for a further discount.

    • Yea they're still doing it at my local. Last week it was the local scout group or something.

    • +1

Canberra Airport Masters have mountains of a few models. Going to give it a few more weeks for further reductions.

  • Damn just bought $250 worth of paint and stain. Today.

    • I just bought the paint roller for $2.50 and didn't buy the paint…

      • Then what's the point going in the store? It cost more for the petrol.

        • +2

          Needed a paint roller?

        • Can buy it in a $2 shop for less.

        • @PW: My closest Masters is actually 100 metres closer than my closest Woolies

  • glad i listened to my intuition and didn't buy anything today.

    • Glad I'm listening to my intuition right now and still not buying lol

  • Anyone know what the discount is currently on garden hoses? Good ones are really expensive!

    • +1

My local is selling the Hardwicks Auto Rewind Garden Hose Reel 30m for $119, down from $159. Extra 10% tomorrow brings it to $107.

      • Yeah that's what I'm buying today :-)

      • Have you checked ALDI this week, seems you can get a better deal than Masters

        • Only 25 percent off hoses at Masters. Going to wait a few weeks.

What's the Aldi knitted hose like?

        • @kickling: Then in a few weeks maybe no hoses left. :-/ seems like you have to perform a lot of store visits and monitoring to get a good bargain eventually.

        • @darkage:

Nah there's plenty of stock left, and 25 percent off brings it down to bunnings prices with my trade card, so not a huge loss if they actually happen to sell out. I don't think garden hoses are their hot items

        • @kickling: Yeah thats one reason I dont make the trek. I know Bunnings price will be better or almost the same.

        • Hoses now 30 percent off. Seems like it's every 2 weeks you get 5% extra

        • @kickling:

thats probably about right with around 8 weeks left, that would mean anything left would be 60-90% off, and the last week would probably be a 'fill a trolley' type scenario or 'fill & take a trolley'

        • @berger: I've been told trolleys cost about $700 each for your traditional full large metal frame style. So it's more than likely the only thing of value left are the trolleys :-)

  • +1

Has anyone been able to return an item since the closing down sale? Any tips?
I haven't bought anything that needs returning but am cautious not to get caught out.

    • +2

You can't if you simply change your mind. Returns are still protected under Australian Consumer Rights.

    • I returned a tap that was broken no issues

    • I saw Masters Box Hill doing it for a few people for change of mind.

    • Has anyone been able to return an item since the closing down sale?

You cannot return items. There are signs everywhere, the checkout staff even specifically tell you before you make payment.

      Any tips?

Yep - don't buy things that you aren't sure that you want.

but am cautious not to get caught out

      How could that happen?

They refund or exchange for faulty goods. Otherwise simply keep what you buy.

  • I mowed the lawns today. I could really go an edge trimmer. I might have a look at what they've got tomorrow.

    • +1

Most gardening stuff today was 30% off btw.

Funny side note I went to Bunnings and Masters today and Bunning was far more busy, they even had ponies.

      • Sweet, I might try and pick up a hedge trimmer tomorrow. :)

        • If they have the Hitachi hedge trimmers and the budget goes that far they are great value on sale.

      • +5

How much were the ponies going for?

      • Including mowers.?

        • +2

I think it may have been 20% off for mowers, not sure though, was a fair few left.

      • Now I want a pony - wonder if my "but it was ozbargain " will cut it as an excuse

  • +2

When I went in an older sales guy said they still had two more container ships worth of stock coming
    Seen them restock once already
Should be some bargains in about a month when they've dropped the huge mark-ups

    • News were reporting that they'd tried unsuccessfully to cancel orders with suppliers, so I'd expect more stock soon.

    • That is consistent with the radio ad that said stores being restocked for the last time

  • Just bloody bought a $460 Lawn mower 2 days ago, What the hell masters?

    • It was probably cheaper prior to the 'liquidation' sale anyway.

      • Yeah pretty sure it was $529 before liquidation but it seems it was bumped up to $549 then had the 20% taken off.

  • +4

Went to Masters today and most of the stuff was around the 20% off mark. Nothing special, just lame.

    • +4

Well at least they got something right… They're masters of deception!

  • Fool me once…

    • Shame on you…

  • The problem is that everyone knows they are closing down, so they'll hold out until they're practically giving it away

  • Well their definitely not giving anything away yet
Staff have been saying they are doing three times the normal trade with increased prices from their regular sales prices
I have a list of gear I need/ want and it adds up quick
I'll wait till is affordable for me

    • -1

      3 times the normal trade?

So is that 3 customers instead of the usual 1 customer I used to see in the store :P

  • +2

Just an example of pricing as bought some https://www.bunnings.com.au/ratsak-disposable-mouse-bait-sta…,
List price of masters is 5% higher than bunnings and after 20% off it was cheaper and the self check outs were actually in operation (never seen that before as usually only 1 register). Either Bunnings priced most lines 5% lower than masters or Masters price it 5% higher than Bunnings but most likely Bunnings dropped their prices when masters opened (They have the form with officeworks). I am sure Bunnings prices will go up after Masters is finished

  • +1

I'd love to get my hands on one off those touch screen digital deadbolt door locks that featured around here a few times..seems they no longer stock it though dammit.

    • +1

They have 40% off door hardware so I'd think these would be long gone. I picked up new hardware for my house but had to go to 4 stores to get all that i needed.

    • There are a few good ones left still like the Kwikset brand. They are bargains at the current price

  • It would be great if someone could create a sales list of what's on sales with discounted prices.

    Up to 50% off?

    • +7

Here's what the Lismore Masters store had on sale. Not sure if other masters stores have the same discounts.

      http://imgur.com/a/yx9BZ

      Hope this helps.

      • Thanks mate!

        • +1

Went to Masters today and took a fresh photo of the current specials as they've updated some of the discounts.

          http://imgur.com/a/zew3H

  • I was in masters today and the prices are just normal prices even with the 20 to 40 percent off, they must think people are fools. Wake up to yourselves people … do some price research before buying from these guys,,, they are still stocking up goods on the shelves and ripping everyone off with 100 to 200 percent mark up on there crappy imported goods.

    • +1

That's why they're closing down because their items are all overpriced.

  • I think I'll just wait till the last week going at this rate..

  • +2

Do you research first guys. They jacked prices up some 30% to advertise these discounts without taking a loss on their regular pricing.
