Ultra HD Android Media Player - $79.99 @ ALDI 15/10

491

I have been looking at getting Kodi for a while but don't know a great deal about it. This box comes with Kodi pre-installed, can any Kodi wizards on here tell me if it's a decent set up?

It's ok. You can get a lot better for that money in eBay. Would recommend a box with 2gb memory and at least Android 5 if not 6.

    • Can you please provide some links for ebay android box? It seems my keywords are not working.

I love the "JAILBROKEN" across the main image.. I wonder if they realise that you don't actually "jailbreak" Android as it's not made by Apple.. Silly people. Just something to keep in mind, they're a new seller with only 3 ratings.

        • +6

          @promethbastard:

Just marketing most likely…using terms average Joe will know, even if they are wrong.

        • +1

          @promethbastard:

Who cares if jailbroken applies or not. They are throwing fancy words around to get attention. Typical ebay word spam…

        • +9

@dosada: I'm sure if they had the labels of 'rooted' across their products, then Aussie buyers would never even give them a look in.. so 'jailbroken' seems more appropriate, especially for the general public who will have an idea of what 'jailbroken' actually means in regards to an electronic device (rather than an item which for whatever reason was broken while in prison).

        • @promethbastard: Jailbreak doesn't only apply to Apple. For Android, Jailbreak means Rooting which is essentially what happens when you jailbreak Apple, you gain root access.

Jailbreaking Android also means it may have a unlocked bootloader.

        • -2

@lplau: Except that Jailbreak is an Apple term. Carrying it across doesn't make sense.

        • +6

@theguyrules: Actually Jailbreak isn't a Apple term. Its been used before for Game Consoles such as Sony PSP.

        • -1

@lplau: The term originated with iOS devices. It was just used for the PSP later.

        • +15

          @theguyrules:

Nope. Jailbreak is a unix term, which has been in use for years longer than the reference to iOS. It did however become synonymous with Apple in 2007 - that's for sure.

        • +8

          @theguyrules:

Agreed - the term isn't really valid on Android - rooted would be more appropriate. And not being petty, just broadening people's minds.

The term was used way back, as it's a challenged to a technology in BSD called 'jail': http://talby.rcs.manchester.ac.uk/~isd/_unix_security/unix_s…

Wikipedia also mentioned use in 2004: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroot

        • +5

          @hammo: Fair point, I'll concede.

        • BTW, can get that X96 for about half that price

        • @theguyrules: Andy Dufresne would like a word with you.

        • -1

I don't recommend rooting and jailbreaking at the same time.

        • @paizuri: I strongly disagree. If jailbreaking fails there will be no rooting for a long time……….

        • @lplau: I remember saying hacked for PSPs

      • +3

A good beginners site is geekbuying.com have a look through and read some reviews, you should be able to get something that's good enough for $30-$40USD plus they have cheap DHL shipping so it actually arrives before you forget about it, most sellers that use china post. It's almost tempting to get this though cause you know it will work and has some sort of quality control testing, that most china sellers don't know or care about.

        • I got an a95x from geekbuying when they where 35aus. I got two, one for a mate to buy off me and so got express shipping for free. It was here in 3 days, sweet. Bit crappy for none kodi stuff some times, but who cares. Use the s905 remote control app on my phone coz Im to cheap to buy a controller and the normal remote is a bit bleh. The latest update to the a95x's firmware fixed the remote app. Great unit that was cheap as. The only reason youd buy this one from aldi is for the easy return. Otherwise got to geekbuying and pay the extra 8-15 bucks for express delivery and you can get way better for the price (for an extra 10 you could get a 2gig s912 dhl delivered).

        • @PAEz: buy a logitech keyboard for the remote they're probably the best remote. k400 or k830, i think microsoft makes a cheap one too.

    • +1

Yup, I just bought an XGODY with an S950X for $10 more.

    • Personally I prefer to run Kodi on my phone and miracast it to TV.

Touch screen control is far superior than remote.

You can connect headphone to mobile when watching TV at night.

Plus, there is no additional cost.

      • Didnt know you could cast Kodi? Does it work with chromecast?

        • Yes it does work(check for instructions). I run kodi on my S7 via Chromecast and it's pretty darn good. Netflix is gone from our house….

        • @Poperdobs: sweet! Does the screen stay on all the time on your phone?

        • @nagel: yes.. i can watch tv n use phone at the same time.

      • +1

How about just using a remote control app though? The official Kore one is pretty decent, and you keep your phone free to do other things.

  • +11

    This one is great: http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Beelink-MINI-MXIII-II-4K-TV-Box-Aml…

Might be able to find a cheaper deal elsewhere.

    • Love my unit! The only downside (and a pretty big one to me) is there is no power button the unit. You must use the one on the supplied remote control.

      • +1

i assume it doesn't have a TV Tuner in it? only reason i ask is that is has TV Set Top box all through its advertising. but don't see one specified in the specs.

        • No tuner that I know of built into mine, unless I haven't found it yet…

    • $56.41 delivered in this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/268344 … BUT it's gearbest.

Ideally there would be an eBay site-wide sale, or it'd be on special from somewhere with a better reputation for order fulfilment & shipping times, like banggood. E.g. $50 delivered with a higher certainty of receiving it would be far more compelling.

How does it go with HDD playback, does it play everything well?.

I've got a WDTV unit that I use to play HDD off, but it is rather slow going through menu's and such

      • even with my android media player, I still tend to watch movies using my WDTV as android devices can have issues with passing through 5.1 audio to external surround sound players. If you watch your movies in stereo through the tv, then please disregard.

        • ok well I made some time tonight to address some of the issues I've been having with my android media player and audio pass-through to my surround sound processor as well as auto frame-rate adjust for 50hz / 60hz / 24hz video - see my separate post at the end of this discussion.

Thanks guys, looks like ebay is the way!

Do I need anything else to get it set up and working? I mainly want to watch English Premier League.

    Thanks

    • You will need a bit of work. Even if it has kodi on it you will have to install some add ons.

    • +3

Connect to the internet via wifi or ethernet(recommended), open up Kodi and start installing your addons. For EPL, some recommended addons can be seen here http://koditips.com/best-kodi-epl-2016-live-streams/ i personally like UK Turk. There's a lot of instructions from Google on how to install addons. It's only done once, and the addon will update itself later. PM if you need more help. I have been running Kodi/XBMC on my HTPC for years now.

      • +2

Just a touch off topic (sort of) but……..I used to run XBMC before it became Kodi but moved to PlexMS which I now run on my Xpenology NAS. The reason for this switch was that without deploying a SQL database solution XBMC struggled with multiple clients and remembering where exactly a specific movie / show had got to when managed centrally. It was a bit clunky at the time hence moving to Plex.

Has Kodi improved in this regard? I believe there is a Plex connector for Kodi which would allow me to still use PlexMS. I am considering shifting away from Plex again as without paying for a Plex Pass I cannot easily implement user profiles to restrict what comes up for the kids in their library.

        • +3

I use a mysql database running on my QNAP NAS and have no issues running multiple KODI clients around the house.

        • +2

          Or use Trakt

        • @vger74656: Haven't heard of trakt so will have a look……when used with Kodi that is. :)

        • @vger74656:

Unless I'm mistaken, Trakt doesn't remember the playback position though? Only watched/unwatched status

        • +1

Emby remembers playback position across for multiple users across different clients.

  • Both those ebay boxes look pretty good, which one would be the better choice ?

The Beelink MINI MXIII II is a great unit.

  • You can get something better for that kind of money,
    https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?spm=2114.01010208.1.1.p…

    • I have one of the A95x units, good for my needs, have not played with the competition to know what else is out there, but seems good in terms of software and updates. I woudn't want a lower spec unit, still a little slow (could be waiting for network).

if you can find a US freight forwarding company the Amazon Fire TV is an amazing device https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-TV-Streaming-Media-Player…

    • Being a US appliance wouldn't it run on 110v and therefore not work here ?

      • It definitely works here, I've got one and used it for months until I replaced it with the Fire TV Stick.

      • It has an ac adapter that works on 110 and 240. Just need a US to AU plug converter. Been using mine for around 18 months now.

As MrFunSocks also pointed out you can get the Fire Stick as a lower cost option.

      • +4

Definetly works here, had one for years.
A better option would be the xiaomi mi box which was launched last week..
Android 6.0 Tv interface. netflix 4k certified. etc etc.
Same deal though you need a freightforwarding company, i brought one yesterday and should have it late next week

        • @garvani , does the mi box have LAN ?

        • @twitch1979: unfortunately no. Has 5ghz AC though and you can plug in a usb to ethernet adapter if you must have LAN.

        • @garvani: ok, cheers.

        • Mate where did you buy one from?

        • @sydneyernie23: Walmart.com ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/54827138 ). Its the only place selling them with stock at the moment. Sent it from there to freightforwarder and then to me in Melbourne

        • @garvani: Thanks mate

        • @garvani: Guys, I think this might be it on Aliexpress $ 133.72 (free shipping)
          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Xiaomi-MI-BOX-Streaming-Medi…?

        • @Honest John: Yeah that is indeed it. I can almost guarantee they don't have stock yet though, only walmart has stock. Cheaper to freightforward and probably waiting less as well :) (i have paid $120aud delivered and will have it by the end of next week)

        • @garvani: You're correct. Xiaomi are expected to give overseas resellers stock in November.

        • @garvani: How's the Walmart MiBox going ?

        • @MITM: still waiting its arrival lol. Its been in australia a week now but has yet to make it to my door, last scanned at sydney airport on wednesday.

    • so there is no need for a powersupply like this guy is saying it comes with?
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Amazon-Fire-TV-4K-1080p-Voice-Sea…

      • The Fire TV comes with a US power adapter as it is a US only device, but you can just plug that adapter into a USA->AUS power adapter and it works.

    • +1

Yes, a great solution, but not a total one box solution

You can install Kodi and you have Netflix, Amazon, Hulu etc but no BBC iplayer unfortunately

I still maintain that the best one-box solution that ensures that you can have every streaming service available is a HTPC running Windows or Linux

      • you can have iplayer on Fire TV no problem or use the iplayer add on via Kodi if you were referring to the any of the other devices mentioned in the thread.

        • Fair enough

If you have a link that shows me how to get BBC iplayer on a US Fire TV that would be great

The kodi iplayer add-ons that I have tried have been rubbish - any info would be greatly appreciated

        • @R4: This is an old article but still relevant http://www.eyeondemand.com/2014/10/24/how-to-combine-us-uk-a…

        • @twitch1979:

Thanks for this - all set up on my AFTV and iplayer works flawlessly

      • I still maintain that the best one-box solution that ensures that you can have every streaming service available is a HTPC running Windows or Linux

Absolutely, but a Windows HTPC costs exponentially more than these Android boxes for very little benefit in the end, so for most people it's not the best solution. A Windows License alone costs more than most good Android boxes.

        • Sure and on my latest build did not have a spare Windows licence so went for a free install of ubuntu 16.04

It works well and kodi runs perfectly on it

    • +44

Sorry post police, seemed to be a healthy discussion until you came along and pissed on it.

        • +20

You find a better deal in a bricks & mortar store with a generous 60 day return policy to compare it to precious, and we'll all cheer for you…until then, stop embarrassing yourself…

          ROFL - A Raspberry Pi isn't a solution. It's a kit of parts - doesn't even have a box.

Plus it's far too gutless to play 4K, it only just manages at 1080p.

        • -1

@llama: My Raspberry Pi 2 struggles to play a 1080p file with medium compression. Sold it the next day.

          ROFL - what a joke.

        • @PainToad:

          lolz

        • @llama:

Odroid C2 is a better option than a raspberry Pi 3 . It uses the same chipset s905 as the bulk of the generic 4k media players . You seem to get less for more money but the support is a lot better than the generic boxes .

I have no idea how this generic $80 media player has so many votes . Does anyone even know the chipset and if it can actually even do 4k ?

        • +1

          @troyww: Assuming it's the same as 7 months ago…

          Allwinner H3 CPU @ 1.2GHz

          1GB RAM, 8GB Storage
          Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0
          10/100Mbps Ethernet

          @troyww:

Odroid C2 is a better option than a raspberry Pi 3

Nobody cares. People aren't interested in building kits and fart-arsing around with rooting devices and custom ROMs and cobbling together things like mad professors and searching geek forums full of pimply (profanity) who consider they are too LEET to release the code to new members who haven't voted "thanks" in the thread yet.

There are probably 10,000 obscure ways of achieving the same end result. At the end of the day it's just a bloody MEDIA PLAYER, so the best solution just buy a media player.

It doesn't need to be anything else apart from a media player.

Consider this: I realise that it is possible to program an Arduino or a Pi to measure and display ambient temperature - however most people would just go and buy a thermometer.

    • Seven other people disagree with you

      • +10

Yes. We know there are cheaper and better options, I can agree with that. But its that rudeness we have to put up with. If you said it in a nicer way people would actually agree but nope. And call them crybabies? Youre the one sooking you had your negative vote removed! So please dont be harsh on people if its not a bargain. Just gently tell them its cheaper elsewhere. Just. Treat people with the same respect as you want them to give you. So your literally just making us treat you with disrespect.

        • +3

Maybe I came on a bit strong.

        • +1

          @PainToad:

Well its strong enough to have more than 16 votes. Maybe rethink your wording next time

    • -4

Have a +1 for the truth.

    • +4

I think PainToad has a point it's just that he/she could have expressed the point in a nicer way, that's why he got down voted.

The fact is OP didn't know if this is a good deal and was asking for opinion, in that case it should've be posted in the forum. It just happens in this case that it turned out to be a good deal so OP didn't get fried by posting a deal when he wasn't sure.

Imagine if OP posted a deal about this Android player that cost $179.99 instead of $79.99, and in his description he said he 'wasn't sure, what's your thoughts?', I'm sure he would have got fried by not posting it in forum.

      • +1

Yeah, not the first time a similar comment has been made (and better received) when someone has posted more or less asking whether it's a good deal, maybe just came across a little harsh.

And since the OP has decided to buy something else anyway, seems was a fair point.

To be honest, apart from having a 60 day return policy and being a physical store, not any real reason to buy this.
Not that cheap, with outdated OS (and possibly hardware) and cheaper options with more features out there.
