  • Is this a portable 2.5" drive

  • +3

I was going to post this deal several days ago but then realised the 2TB is only $32 more @ $95.20

    • Yep that's the one I got for the xbox one. No stock at my local GG so paid extra 5 for delivery. Still worked out pretty good tho.

    • +1

      thanks got 2

    • +3

Thanks, added to post, completely forgot about the 2TB so I must have amnesia or something XD

Also there seems to be low stock of the 2TB so for many it'll be delivery only (>$100 after del), so I think that 1TB @ $63.2 still good for those who don't require the extra storage.

      • +1

How can you not require additional storage

    • +1

I see you removed that comment since it got so many negs.

      • +1

Got it removed as OP updated post adding 2TB link but you are allowed to interpret it however you like :)

  • Nice deal. Perfect timing for grabbing an external to back up my PS4 before the Pro arrives.

    Thanks for posting!

    • +1

Get the 2TB, it's $32 extra for double the storage :)

      • +2

Yeah seems like a better deal but not sure I'd use the extra TB.

Edit: Bugger it…the 2TB it is. Thanks ;)

        • yeah rather be safe than sorry. I'm amazed at how large games are on PS4/Xbone. Chewed through 500gb in less than a month haha

        • @ShamelessBargains: And they'll only get bigger so yeah, a bit of future proofing with the 2TB. Weird that the eBay app told me the product didn't match the listing but went though fine on a browser.

Anyway, the closest store to me is the only one within 100kms with stock…it's a sign I guess.

  • OP do you know if this mac compatible. Looking for back up drive but able to format and switch easily between mac/pc.

    • +5

      Hey ShadyKritik,
The whole 'mac compatible" thing is a total joke designed to rip off mac users. Any hard drive will work with any mac. You just need to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on your mac, instead of NFTS (what windows uses)
Some instructions here once you get your drive!
      https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201909

      • Thanks heaps for the quality tip off. All the advertised 'works on mac' drives seem to have an extra $50 tacked on.!!

    • +1

Yes, this one works for mac as well. I'm currently using the exact one for my macbook pro 2012 main hard drive as my original one died a couple of days ago. You can also use it for the TimeMachine Back up too

      • Good to know thanks for the advice.

    • +1

almost any drive can be used on almost any platform. you simply need to format it the right way (exfat). alternatively seagate has paragon ntfs for use with its drives but you can't use it with time machine.

if they are anything like they 4 dead 2-3TB drives I have here I'd advise against buying them

    • +1

You gave no details about your dead hard drives…brand? model?

Seagate desktop 3.5" drives have a bad rep due to their failure rates.
However, these aren't the same drives. If they've only updated the enclosure in this revision and not the actual hard drive, the 2.5" drive inside is a Samsung SpinPoint M9T. These have an excellent reputation regarding reliability and speed (~100MB/s sequential write) according to reviews.

I've had the old version of the 2TB for a couple of years now and it is still going strong

      • +1

The 1TB version has Samsung Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 inside,

        Datasheet: http://samsunghdd.seagate.com/includes/spinpoint-m8-ds.pdf

Samsung SpinPoint M9T, also made by Seagate, comes only in 1.5TB and 2TB sizes.
        Datasheet: http://www.seagate.com/www-content/support-content/samsung/i…

So the 2TB version of the Seagate HDD, which has Samsung SpinPoint M9T inside, is technically a better choice.

        • +1

The 1TB Expansion I picked up recently from Officeworks has an ST1000LM035, which suits me as it's quieter than my older Backup Plus, which has an ST1000LM024.

        • @Jabba the Hutt: I wonder because ST1000LM035 has less Acoustic noise, Seek/Idle, Typical (bels) 2.2bels/2.0bels compared to ST1000LM024 2.5bels/2.3bels. ST1000LM035 is also Mobile HDD series which is thinner and lighter (7mm, 95g) than ST1000LM024 (9.5mm, 105g) so I guess Backup Plus Slim matches with ST1000LM035. Are you sure?

        • +1

@rh: It's what CrystalDiskInfo tells me. The Backup Plus Slim containing the ST1000LM024 was bought in March 2015 and has a 12.1mm thick case. The Expansion with the ST1000LM035 was bought just last month and has a slightly thicker case. The latter's case is apparently oversized for the drive.

      • Seagate External (AC powered)

http://iforce.co.nz/i/3zbrm43d.cp3.jpg - refuse to even give out SMART data.. one of the early signs of dying.

They end up like this after a few months and before anyone whines about it must be the way I treat them. I had one removed from case and installed internally, that was on the same power rail from the PSU sitting above a 2TB WD green drive.. same air flow, same power and same usage (very light!) and have a guess which one was 10c+ hotter and died within 6-12 months.

        It wasn't the WD.

Then again if it was only one drive i'd take it as a bit of bad luck but 4 drives? haha.

        • +1

Yeah completely different drives. The Seagate Barracuda 3.5" 7200RPM HDDs you have are notorious for their relatively short life span

        • +1

Yes, that HDD will die soon, that is a Seagate Barracuda 3TB version which has an annual failure rate over 40% https://www.backblaze.com/blog/best-hard-drive-q4-2014/

  • Thanks for the heads up! Wanted something for the kids to share stuff and didn't wan't to spend much. This will do the trick. Much appreciated!

  • Seems like I cant get the discount with having a paypal account in other currencies/countries than australia?
If anyone knows about an easy workaround I would gladly listen.

(creating a new AU paypal account connected to our AU credit card is not doable)

  • No stock in nearby stores and don't wanna pay the $5 for delivery…
    Also spotted this:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Seagate-2505820-2TB-Backup-Pl…

$118 for 2TB, anyone can tell me the difference other than the cooler look of this?

    • Both have the same 2.5" Samsung SpinPoint M9T HDD inside (ST2000LM003), 3 Years warranty. Differences are in protective case slim design, size, weight, and also preloaded driver for Mac.

      Seagate Backup Plus:
      Size: 123.4 x 81.1 x 14.5 mm
      Weight: 224g
NTFS Driver for Mac preloaded on drive

      Seagate Expansion:
      Size: 128.1 x 89.1 x 15.5 mm
      Weight: 270g
NTFS Driver for Mac should be downloaded

      • thx 4 the info… for the sake of mac driver n nicer look, just for $18 more if i do pickup, i will go for backup+!
