Having to pay card fee in year one devalues this offer, although the mnimum spend is quite low. Computer says no though .. 😃 .. !!

    • Edit: NAB shareholder, so now I'm applying for the card .. yay .. 😁 .l !!

      • So an online trade is about $12. How many shares minimum?

        • +1

          500 .. $13955 at Friday's market close :-) .. !!

  • +3

If you happen to hold NAB shares then it is possible to waive the CC annual fee http://www.nab.com.au/about-us/shareholder-centre/shareholde…

    • +2

That's $13,785 just for a fee waiver. Ouch!

      • +2

I guess it depends when one purchased the shares. But a lot of people hold NAB without realizing the benefits. Just adding to the education pool of info.

    • plus you need to spend at least $7.5K on purchases in 12 months

      • Yeah I think the link covers that off. So $625 per month I'm guessing is comfortable for most people. And the points earn on the Amex could would be 1.5 per dollar. We only use the Amex card in the bundle.

    • +1

It's better deal than earlier this year or late last year when the offer was 60K points. I tried to do the shareholder fee waiver but was told this only applies after the first year. So I still got hit with the fee for the first year

  • +2

$250 fee kills this deal. Shame :P I'm racking up quite a few QFF points from the fee free cards!

  • +2

Does it really kill the deal?

I've got about 80,000 racked up, I'm keen to rack up a few more….wouldn't this deal be worth approx $500 in terms of purchasing flights? So even with a $250 it's still a great deal, unless I'm misunderstanding your comment.

    • +1

No you're not. It is a great deal even at 1c per point you're still ahead. It's just people view annual fees different than other.

    • Bose QC35 headphones (~$450) currently go for 68,000 points in the Qantas store.

So, you could value the 75,000 bonus points at around the $500 mark.

$250 profit after the annual fee isn't bad but I still find it hard to pull the trigger :/

    • If you plan on buying flights with your points, it's indeed not a bad deal.
Not the best one around at the moment, but still worth it if you are already through the other fee free deals (ANZ, St George).

  • 1 cent per point? Must admit, I know nothing about using these points…But a quick Google search ten mins ago, indicated the value was approx only 0.7c per point.

    1c would be brilliant!!!!

    • In our experience … Using points to 'buy' a business class ticket yields (using classic awards) or the explorer fares yields between 3 & 7 cents per point we find - plus you get a guaranteed business seat vs upgrade lottery. However; upgrades also yield excellent results when they come through. A bad outcome is buying an economy fare or using 'points plus pay'. Premium cabins are where the real value kicks in IMHO.

      • +4

Depends on the person. I would never pay for anything but economy because I just dump a sleeping tablet as I'm boarding…

      • How many points do you reckon i would need for business class for me, wife and 2x boys return to UK?? Just a rough guess..

        • +1

East coast, flying Qantas, Emirates or a Oneworld subsidiary, you're looking at around 1 million points for the four of you. However, the chances you could actually find 4 x J award seats on the one flight could be slim.

        • @The Champagne Mile:

Thanks for that! looks like I'll be sticking with Economy then… boo…

        • +1

96,000 to upgrade from economy to business one way MEL-LHR. 192,000 return.

          x4 = 768,000 points.

          :)

        • +1

@Skramit: Important to note that upgrades are only possible from the higher economy fare buckets. So clandestino would probably need to fork out around $2000 per family member ($8000 total) before spending the 768,000 points for your scenario above.

        • +2

          @The Champagne Mile:

          Yeah agree.

Buying J rewards outright costs around $2500 in airport tax for starters for 4 people.

          So it's either: $8000 + 768000 pts or $2500 + 1mil+ points.

Either way…. availability is so limited it will never happen anyway for 4 people on the same flight :)

        • +2

We use the business class 280k points 'round the world' fares which allow a heaps of stops and multiple carriers. This is fantastic value IMHO. There is also a 140k economy round the world and 420k first class round the world. If flying point-to-point Oz to LHR vs round the world, then Business is 256k, Economy is 120k or something like economy to LHR and return 1st class is 252k points. These scenarios also guarantee a seat vs lottery. Remember there is also taxes to be paid.

        • +2

@nonpop: Agree, these are great value (my husband and I booked J 280 awards last year). We travelled mostly on Cathay, which was much cheaper taxes wise when compared with QF and EK (around $150 pp from AUS to the US then Europe back to Aus).

        • @The Champagne Mile: Is that through Asia Miles? Also what is a J280? Cheers

        • @tunzafun001: It is through Qantas. J is code for business class. 280 is code for 280k QF points.

        • @The Champagne Mile: We do the same using Cathay, JAL, Finnair & AA. And when we fly into London LHR we will then look to fly out of Paris CDG to avoid LHR pax taxes which are crazy. The J round-the-world 280k award is sensational value.

    • Check the Ozbargain classified because that's what they typically goes for

      • +1

Care .. breaches QFF rules and if you get caught they scrub your points AND suspend your account. Just sayin ' …..

        • True but they only do that for repeated offenders.

  • +1

I like using these deals to extend my Qantas Club each year, can do this for 50K points.

    • Can you please explain this??

      • +1

it costs 50K pts to extend your Qclub membership.

  • isnt it the westpac $150 annual fees wih 50k points better?

    • Based just on points/$, yes. But having to deal with Westpac is torture. At least it was last year when all other banks had online applications and Westpac required a very lengthy branch visit…

      • +1

I applied for the Westpac card, lay down misere application, after weeks of being jerked about by total idiots I cancelled the application. Not the first negative experience with Westpac, no siree Bob….

    • you can waive that $150 by opening a savings account before applying

  • Great post OP. Would go this one but have already signed onto the ANZ/Velocity deal posted earlier. Still great for anyone interested especially the Qantas points.

Just praying ANZ honor the Velocity points part of the deal as based on the comments ANZ have no idea the deal exists.

    • +1

Take a screenshot of the deal (if it's still online).
If they don't honour it, send them the screenshot and threaten to report this to the Financial Ombudsman.

      • Thanks for the tip!

  • +1

What if you used to have this card before but cancelled a year ago?

    • A lot off people on AFF say you don't need to wait out the 12 months. You can always call to check

    • I can't see any reference to not being eligible for the points if you have held this card within the last 12 months. I'd appreciate if someone can post the details if that's not the case.

  • Min income?

  • I like NAB offers but the Customer Service is super terrible, especially to Loan section.

  • +1

    Nice find OP

  • I was about to apply for AMEX Explorer, but now I'm confused considering that I'm a NAB shares holder

    Comparison with AMEX Explorer:
75K KrisFlyer miles vs 75 Qantas Miles
1.5k min spend vs 1.5k min spend
$0 potential annual fee vs $0 actual annual fee

Considering that I already have some Qantas miles and don't have KrisFlyer miles, I tend to the NAB offer to accumulate more Qantas miles

    • In my experience it's better to have all eggs in one basket rather than a couple of different programs. For me that basket is Qantas mostly for choice of Domestic and International rewards flights and upgrades.

There are lots of folks who swear by other programs like KrisFlyer or AA :) if you want expert FF advise on which program, the best resource are the gurus on http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/

The NAB offer requires that you spend a set amount with the card in a year to have them waive the annual fee. Given that the annual fee is normally charged in advance, the question arises 'do they waive the initial annual fee BEFORE you've been able to accrue any use'. They say the answer is yes, provided you register your entitlement as a shareholder when the card is issued (by calling their Card Service Centre) .. 😊 .. !!

      • I called up and they didn't even have a clue about the shareholder offer…
Also, did you apply online and then call up to get the fee waived? Or did you apply over the phone?

        • Online, still pending but proceeding, the annual fee will be waived by calling their Card Service Centre after the card is issued (confirmed in an earlier call). As a NAB shareholder you should have been issued with a shareholder benefits code when you bought your shares to quote in invoking the waiver.

Disclaimer: I have no connection with NAB beyond being a shareholder.
