    Meh..

That's what I was gonna say!

          @Kevan2:
          But are there any plants

    • +2

Plant section was 80% empty at a masters I was at Tuesday night.

Also, they were out of rubber mallets.

Got shade cloth 50% off and my "4 meters" of shade cloth was about 8, so that was good.

      • Just visited mine. Plant section was around 20% like yours. Had a few seedlings left. I bought some dwarf bamboo at ~$3.80 each (was actually in the market for it!) and a really healthy 1m tall weeping lilly pilly for $12.50ish. Most of the rest was junk. Camellias werent bad.

  • Hope they still got some EGO 56v stock left

    • +2

Last time I was there, there were literally pallets of them at Northmead in Sydney.

    • +1

Trimmer with battery set is gone.

Trimmer without battery is very low (or no) stock.

Mower is still available but $4xx.

I checked 3 stores in Vic today, nothing much left.

      • I checked Sunbury, Northlands and Roxburgh Park. Sunbury still has a few EGO mowers and Chainsaws and Line Trimmers, no batteries. Word is that all the stock that can't be sold is being sent to Adealide. Maybe people there are having a massive EGO rush?

        • +1

          They needed power. LOL

        • I checked out box hill. The only line trimmers were the 1300 skin only. I didn't look for chain saws or blowers

    • +1

      Mower will be $649 x 70% x 90% = $408.87.

Should be lots of mowers left, but there should still be a few line trimmers, hedge trimmers and chainsaws left.

    • +1

I like the idea of an EGO mower, but how difficult is it going to be to buy accessories, such as replacement batteries, chargers, blades etc once Masters shuts down? From what I can see online, there's only Masters and one store in Brisbane that stock EGO in Australia.

      • Someone here said that mitre 10 and Big W (or maybe K-mart) will be stocking them in future. My recommendation would be to pay a bit extra and go for the Ryobi 36V range.

      • Home hardware sell EGO https://www.homehardware.com.au/catalogue/ and Trade Tools https://www.tradetools.com/product-range/cordless-tools/batt…

I also like the EGO range and believe they will do a great job in the short term. I'm just not sure if I want to rely on the availability of that battery to be in stock in 3 years time and paying $260.

I guess you could balance this with buying fuel and servicing?

I'm on the fence with it to be honest as I'm looking at the MGS Briggs & Stratton 625EX mower for $345… which Master's have plenty of.

  • +4

I checked last time. No good thing left. We also saw many other people come out with empty hand. :(

    Not a deal. Normal price.

Service is heading downwards too with their prices.

      • I walk past a Masters a few times a week. Their garden is full of years worth of random litter and every time I see it I wonder what is wrong with their management to be that dumb.

Saw a couple eating jellybeans from a paint can and just chatting away when the shop was busy as earlier this week :/

        • +2

I feel like there's a joke about monkeys and peanuts there somewhere but not sure what goes with jellybeans, children perhaps?

Yesterday I took a random sample of 11 items against similar Bunnings items and even with these huge discounts I couldn't find anything worth buying.
Honestly most prices were bumped up, evidenced by 2 huge boxes of discarded tickets left on the floor. Clearly they could afford to employ people to do this before the "big discounts"

Most of the stuff is same price or cheaper at Bunnings, often it is better quality. e.g $130 Big Pots i bought look sick with paint coming off after 7 months., Tools blunt after one use, Multitool dead, 2x Drills dead and so on.

Shame though, I really tried my best to support Masters ( wasn't very fond of Bunnings before ) but Masters just didn't cut it.
The staff poorly trained, slack attitudes, poor product knowledge, but it's good to see them with a sense of humor now !!

    • +13

Yesterday I took a random sample of 11 items against similar Bunnings items and even with these huge discounts I couldn't find anything worth buying.

Your random sample wasn't that random in that case. Why don't you list these eleven random items?

Plumbing is definitely cheaper by at least 40%.
      Hot water systems are cheaper.
      Paint is cheaper.
      Paint accessories are cheaper.
      Garden tools are cheaper.
      Garden accessories are cheaper.
      Tiles are cheaper.
      Toilets are cheaper.
      Showers are cheaper.
      Timber is cheaper.
      And so on.

Most of the stuff is same price or cheaper at Bunnings, often it is better quality.

Most items sold by Masters were better quality, so much in Bunnings is the cheapest Chinese rubbish.

Honestly most prices were bumped up, evidenced by 2 huge boxes of discarded tickets left on the floor.

No-one has ever provided proof of this and the prices were on their website so unless you can provide proof your claim is like the others and bogus.

      • Good if you can find anything you want.
I've bought quite a bit of stuff and am mostly happy.
However, as I would expect the picking are getting much slimmer.

      • +1

Masters has rubbish also, their Bathroom Vanity Units HAVE NO REAR PANEL!!! PFFFFFFT!!!!

      • +2

        I shopped there often,
Paint doubled in price from what I paid.
Paint brushes sky rocketed in price also.

could be the type of paint maybe. seeing majority of brands are exclusive in paint, not much compare to.

Check previous posts regarding Masters Prices for the "proof" you are looking for - plenty of it including myself.

A very large number of the "discounts" provided in the closing down sale from its start to now were at prices significantly higher than prices REGULARLY available on the very same goods prior to the sale.

All goods were marked up to FULL RRP at the beginning of the sale and for many, many goods this means that prices were marked up to levels that they were never, or rarely were priced at before. When these items were then discounted 10, 20, 30% it left many of them above their previous sales prices.

I have been renovating my house since early September and have spent $20,000 on tools and materials in that time - the majority of which at Bunnings despite the fact that I have a Bunnings and Masters right next to each other and for every purchase entered Masters first and only once there priced checked against the Bunnings website.

If Masters prices were that good I would have been quiet happy to make 100% of the purchases at Masters and pocket the savings but it just didn't work out that way with Bunnings getting 90% of the money I have spent over this time - I am not an idiot, if the prices of the items in front of me were better I would have taken them. In some cases it may have been there were good deals at Masters but they had sold out of items before I got there and so was not able to price-check.

I will be in at Masters tomorrow myself as I do think that there are some genuine good bargains at these rates with the additional 10% off… e.g. I am looking at some outdoor furniture and a new Condenser Dryer and believe I will be able (if they still have stock since I was there on Wednesday) be able to save a couple of hundred dollars on each compared with another retailer.

Check previous posts regarding Masters Prices for the "proof" you are looking for - plenty of it including myself.

I've seen no proof this happening despite many claims.

A very large number of the "discounts" provided in the closing down sale from its start to now were at prices significantly higher than prices REGULARLY available on the very same goods prior to the sale.

So your complaint is that discount was based on the normal price not the price the goods were on sale at!

All goods were marked up to FULL RRP at the beginning of the sale and for many, many goods this means that prices were marked up to levels that they were never, or rarely were priced at before.

The prices were set at their regular price. Provide some proof via a service like price hipster because aside from some mistakes or misplaced tags no-one has provided any proof that prices were increased above normal prices.

When these items were then discounted 10, 20, 30% it left many of them above their previous sales prices.

LOL what a ridculous arguement. Why do you think Masters owes you anything? Do you go into Bunnings and demand they lower their price to what it was two months earlier when on special?

      • +2

they definitely did raise many prices before their bogus sale.
unsurprisingly we werent compiling evidence for you.

      • I bought an Ego hedge trimmer which had regular price of $349 before the fire sale. Then the price went up to $369 at 3 stores near me but a 4th store still had the ticket price at $349. When I paid for the trimmer it was still scanning at $369 so they had to override the national price hike and then apply the discount.

      • +1

Agreed. I needed a hose tie for the waste hose from a dishwasher. At Masters they were good quality Australian Made 10 for $10 prior to discounts.

My dad went to Bunnings to pick one up Chinese made for $2.

Just an example. When I was renovating I had countless examples of the Same happening. Even the Lowes 'Kobalt' in house range are a decent quality

I don't get where this perception of Bunnings being better quality comes from

  • What is the current discount on Outdoor Power Tools?

    • +2

30% plus this 10% off the remaining 70%
And if you think that's confusing, people have been taking the price tags off the shelf so you have to guess the original price?
So a black and decker electric hedge trimmer$89-30%=$60-10% = $54bargain or big w clearance august $15

      • +2

That's what peeved me the most - theres no price tags left on anything and the staff don't give a rats!

Can be good IF you can find what you're looking for and know what you want to pay.

        Making suckers of everyone else.

        • there seems to be a mixed staff response. Sadly I had a lovely gentleman who help me spend a $1000 on items that I will use and at 40% to 60% off. Sadley I could have parked them till 7 am tomorrow and saved 90$.

oh well changestore location to get the rest of items needed

      • Thanks. I'm waiting for at least 50% off.

        • by then it would only be the junk left..

        • @berger: I'm hoping not. I've got my eye on a line trimmer and they had lots of stock last time I went. We'll see. If I miss out I won't be devastated.

  • +8

Wow, must have hit a raw nerve there. Do you work for Masters ?
I pop in the stores at least twice a week and just reporting on what i noticed. I won't sit here and justify every item for your pleaseure. Back them up all you like, but even with up to 60% off you don't see many people buying much stuff at all , so that in itself says quite a lot does it not ?

    • +6

Yeah I've been in a few times now and walked out empty handed. Too much of Masters is just a giant junk store.
And everything I ever went in for you could get elsewhere, not necessarily at Bunnings, for cheaper with 10x better advice.
Prices were only reasonable when on special. Most probably the dodgy supermarket model of phoney price cycles and discounting just doesn't work for Tradies and do it yourself repairs.

      • +2

Prices were only reasonable when on special. >Most probably the dodgy supermarket model of phoney price cycles and discounting just doesn't work for Tradies and do it yourself repairs.

Prices were reasonable even without the discounting, the Werner ladders were always good value but could be picked up at 40% off during sales. I purchased a lot from Masters with a lot of it 20-50% cheaper, now they're on the way out Bunnings will jack up the prices and start replacing good products with more shoddy cheap rubbish.

        • +1

          I can't agree more.

        • +2

Plenty of room for us to have different experiences. I found,
Plants were cheaper healthier at local nursery, garden supplies same at the local landscapers.
Bought a whole heap of garden pots very very much cheaper from the local guy.
I need a bathroom refit and vanities and tapware all much cheaper (and nicer) at the local suppliers.
I bought some paint I needed cheaper at local paint shop.
Screws and nails heaps cheaper at small hardware stores.
I bought my drill kits on special at Masters but the extra skins I wanted I got cheaper at a small hardware shop.
Even after the prices have gone down I got my new lawnmower somewhere else cheaper and walked away from the 30% off hoses and got one from Aldi for half the price.
I have left Masters furious several times after unprovoked very rude service.
I have been given completely incorrect advice more than once that wasted a lot of my time.
But I will definitely miss the specials.

        • @tonka: Just a shout out to the Narellan store though, everyone there has always been awesome.

        • +1

          @tonka:
          agree bro.
masters was only good for the occasional specials - their attempt to get ppl in the door.
all other aspects of their service and pricing sucked

        • @tonka: the service was the worst, people who don't know anything about the products, don't know where stuff is in their own store, can't answer basic questions and that's if you actually find someone servicing their area. Truly terrible service that had gotten worse with the influx if people during the sales.

        • @Jackson:

@tonka: the service was the worst, people who don't know anything about the products, don't know where stuff is in their own store, can't answer basic questions and that's if you actually find someone servicing their area. Truly terrible service that had gotten worse with the influx if people during the sales.

Bunnings wasn't any better, aside from a few tradies who often gave out poor advice it was only the launch of Masters that saw them increase staff levels at their stores along with reducing prices which are already being raised in preparation for the demise of Masters. I'm sure that hours will start being cut soon as well to add to all the out of work Masters employees.

I can only think of one time this year that I've had a good experience seeking assistance at Bunnings with someone who was apologetic for the long delay in waiting after multiple trips to the service desk but went above and beyond in helping me with a price match (actually the service was ok I'm just used to it being rubbish)

The other slightly good experience was a delivery where they stuffed up an item that was ordered and I had to return to store to get them replaced but again I shouldn't have been delivered the wrong items.

So please don't hold up Bunnings as an example of customer service, at least at Masters the staff greeted you, they had call buttons in their aisles, they generally carried scanners and were willing to help.

We're going back to the bad days when Bunnings staff scurried like cockroaches at the sight of a customer.

        • @Maverick-au: i never said the service at Bunnings was great, and I don't know if it got better due to Masters because I don't live near one and onky went when there was a great deal on (like the $4 cargo straps). But of the 7-10 times I went, I would either have to wait 15min at a counter or walk 6 aisles away to find someone who would answer "I don't know" or "it's not my area". Maybe just my (not very local) store, but it was my experience time and again.

I agree that Masters going down is tragic for all of us, but let's call a spade a spade

        • @Jackson: If you want service and people that can give useful advice, stick with small local hardware stores. All a Bunnings or Masters staffer can effectively do is point you to an aisle (which is impressive considering how much shit they have in there) or give you information that's about as good as you get from the pimple faced teenager at any given Supercheap.

If you want to be spoon fed your Chinese junk Bunnings is the place to be. Masters had some seriously good gear but no one shopping there wanted good gear, just cheap gear.

Jackson, Masters has service call buttons all over the place, they were in the "open your eyes" area. If you wandered around looking for people you were doing it wrong.

Just calling a spade a spade here. =)

        • @Nitr0: I've never seen a call button either. I'm guessing whats driving some of the disagreement here is simple different experiences. Some stores had nice staff and some not. Probably a reflection on the manager. I went to 2 Masters and they were chaulk and chèese.
The one on Cowpasture road in Sydney was awful every single time I went there the staff were rude not just a little bit but start a fight with you nasty type of rude. Also 3 times I was their the manager came onto the floor and called a team huddle and all the staff just abandoned their customers to run over.
The Narellen store every time I went
Were very nice and helpful some of my best customer service experiences.
As far as their call and email services go did anyone ever get an answer there. It was just some sort of black hole.

        • +1

@Nitr0: in my experiences there was no excuse, returning something at the returns counter shouldn't take 40 minutes, and when staff call someone else to help you because they don't know something and that person doesn't show and you end up waiting 20minutes in an aisle is inexcusable. As said may have just been my store.

We all want competition, and we all want better products at cheaper prices, but there's a limit to what you can put up with if you are employed and time is money. Ruining a day out with the family isn't worth the time. We all wanted Masters to be successful so they could keep providing those deals, but the value proposition was diminished by their crap execution

I should add that this was during their business as usual period, I don't expect anything once the announcement to close was made

        • +1

@tonka: Yes the stores I have been to are Cowpasture Rd and Chullora, both sucked as. Fine if you knew exactly what you wanted and where it was and actually found it, crap if you had to rely on anyone for anything. This made bargain hunting for ex display stock even harder because you had no idea about your rights, how to get spare parts, nothing. It was as is and go jump.

        • @Jackson: One of the things that makes me mad about the whole thing is my experience at the Cowpasture store. The staff were so rude and incompetent but nobody did anything about it and that contributes to the nicer staff in other stores losing their jobs and one of the biggest commercial screw ups in recent history.
I really don't get how they can just wipe a billion dollar venture without trying to fix the basic problems first.
The main problem is people like yourself and tradies on the clock wouldn't go back when they were wasting too much time dealing with teenagers that didn't want to be there.
I spent nearly an hour at the returns counter twice.

        • +1

@tonka: They can because paying execs is a shame beyond 500k/year. People think just because someone has a $1M bonus people think they are some messiah who's every venture is going to be successful. It's actually been shown to be counter-productive to okay people that much, but the American led capitalist system is blind to it. If there were two things that could be done to improve the world is not pay execs as much and make companies pay a fair share of tax.

As it is even if they screw the company they still get a golden handshake, take a year off and then off to the next one

        • @tonka:

I've never seen a call button either.

I wonder what store you're visiting because every store had them in most aisles in multiple places. You press the button and it keeps calling for someone until the staff member arrives and cancels it from the button.

As far as their call and email services go did anyone ever get an answer there. It was just some sort of black hole.

Phone was always answered and emails within 1-4 business hours over the whole time they were operating normally.

If your basing your experience since they announced they were closing the stores that's pretty unreasonable.

        • @Maverick-au:
'If your basing your experience since they announced they were closing the stores that's pretty unreasonable.' No, I'm not, but even then I don't think it would be unreasonable to expect people to be polite.
If you were ringing a store then sure , as I said i expect some stores were OK, but even when I was returning a call and called over and over it just rang out 9 times out of 10 at Cowpasture road.
If you were getting prompt service from the customer service email then all I can say is you are special.
I sent several queries on different subjects at different times and never received any response ever.

There are plenty of bargains in store if you look, I provided examples of areas where I have seen big discounts over Bunnings prices. There are plenty of people buying stuff as can be seen by the empty shelves. I've saved a heap recently on plumbing and other areas but it seems that many people need flashing neon signs and huge price tags to tell them the price.

      • can be seen by the empty shelves

I don't have question about empty shelves, but was the stock really sold to walk in customer?

I saw staff clearing shelf for product like Yale Zero and many other "popular" products. I managed to buy one of them, but others were "pulled out", according to the staff I spoke to.

Didn't push to get details. I'm sure there is story behind it, but it does not worth to dig out. IMO

        • I don't have question about empty shelves, but was the stock really sold to walk in customer?

Some stock was taken back by suppliers but they have a lot of stock on the way, something like 5000 pallets.

        • Yale Zero could easily go to Woolworths or Big W I maybe.

      • Yeah, I know my prices pretty well…Sure plumbing is 60% off , that's just great … but while prices for some things in the store are reasonable to good, Most of the stuff I was looking at was just not worth buying from… esp from a store that doesn't offer exchanges or refunds. Why risk it when I can go to other stores, have more choice and less of a struggle to get decent service and still have the option to return or refund items.
I bought over $40 of glues that was all dried out, after December how would that pan out ??
I also bought 5 x Tool Cabinets, 4 had their corners smashed in, so you get an idea of the way disgruntled staff are currently moving stock around… Some staff don't give a shit and that's what you end up with sometimes when you're gift is finally opened. Embarrassing to say the least.
It's things like this that show how poorly the company was run.

        • It's things like this that show how poorly the company was run.

Bunnings have had issues with stock since they started, they don't rotate stock so often you get stock that is years old and plenty of stock is damaged by staff that don't care.

I also bought 5 x Tool Cabinets, 4 had their corners smashed in, so you get an idea of the way disgruntled staff are currently moving stock around…

You can't say this is because they are closing, it could have been a customer, it could have been return stock or it could have been damaged in transit.

I spent $250 across two stores today and saved around $350 off Bunnings prices.

Funnily enough I had to go to Bunnings and they had jacked up their priced on Polyurethane glue by $3 to $20 and threaded rod was all damaged and only two left in 10mm and it was bent. Masters had the Gorilla branded ones for around $15 + discount and I should have purchased it there.

    • Buying much stuff? The stores are practically empty now…

    • At Box Hill yesterday the registers were packed, car park full and could see plenty of transactions occuring

Dont go to Masters if you:
    1. Looking for nice shopping experience
    2. Don't have specific things you want/watch
    3. Take more than 20 mins to go
Things left are either expensive stuff (discounted but still out of my budget) or stuff noone wants

Sorry for my rants. But I do reget 3 hours trip to Masters last week.

I might come back when I want to buy some paint though (after researching what paint I want )

Not a bad idea, especially if you are driving 3 hours.

That was since the closing down announcement.

Prior to closing down it was the complete opposite of what you described which is why I don't get why no one supported them :(

      The old Masters
      * No Customers - have the store to yourself

Spot on - I keep on saying the same thing

I shook my head two weeks ago at Box Hill. The car park I have never seen it that busy where it took minutes to find a car park. I have been shopping there regularly with all the benefits you mentioned and nobody was there, now you can't get it.

Like you I don't get the public - the catalogue specials prior were better or on average as good as now. The staff on the whole were great too and I know they went out of their way to help customers

Its such a short term decision to close this down and a dissapoiintment it never got the chance to succeed

Agree that closing is shortsighted. To invest so much then bug out without a major effort to turn things around has the stench of new execs chasing easy win bonuses to me.

I'm really hoping there will be a new player that puts Wollies to shame maybe Mitre10 will rise to the occasion.

        Gift Cards are still accepted

      • I think it's also the way they pitched themselves to the consumers. I always imagined them to be the 'prettier' version of bunnings, ikea, the good guys etc.
So if I was ever going to shop for something, I would rather go to that particular store.

      • Agreed, except about the staff, they are never around when you need one

  • Does anyone know if Werner products such as scaffolding are still available?

    • Does anyone know if Werner products such as scaffolding are still available?

There was at Richlands in Brisbane a few weeks ago, they had about ten on the shelf.

  • Masters, NOOOOOO……

  • Anyone know of the trade card works on top of this?

    Thanks

    • Not afaik. I asked a staff member a few weeks ago, in which they stopped it a few days before. But maybe this was only for the bunnings trade card…

If you have the Masters trade card it should scan up still. If you're having issues PM me the barcode of your trade card and I'll check it.

    • Still works.

  • Can someone who works at the Adelaide store tell me if the Jack and Jill bench sets are on sale yet? I missed out on the last time they were a bargain price and when I try to call them it's just an automated message saying they don't take calls anymore.

  • When they say "extra 10% off", does this mean 30% off, then another 10% on the now discounted amount… or 30%+10% = 40% off?

    • +1

listed discount item then another 10%. layman way 10% of bill total. not 30 +10 but 30% x by.90

      • +1

        ta

i guess ill wait a little longer for it to be a legitimate 10% extra then :).

No and how dare you accuse masters we love to hate of deceptive marketing
I mean there was woollies management down on their luck, could barely find a couple a mill ta rub together when they came up with a brilliant idea
How to take Australians for granted with the most expensive hardware experience known to man
Bugger the snags they thunk we'll give em a little upper crust like back in the mother cuntry
Surely they won't even notice the prices as they float to the checkout in a caffeine dream
If they hada had segways I coulda loved that store dammit
      Now harlot I don't give a damn

      • You tell a good story, you should be the narrator to Man from Snowy River 3 or something ;).

I almost feel sorry for them… almost :)

        • Sarcasm detected, ' EXTERMINATE '

  • Bought a ride on mower for $2200 a few weeks ago, and still no update on delivery- starting to get nervous.

Had one delivered the other day that I did not order. Might be yours. It's awesome, been doing the neighbours verges as well.

      • +2

Must be from WA? Verge is such a odd way to say nature strip

        • +1

Never heard of the term nature strip before to describe a verge :)
