  • That seems a good laptop for under $500.

    • Windows 8, and the free Windows 10 upgrade period is over.

      • +4

You say that like it's a bad thing? :D

        • +6

Its Windows 8 NOT Windows 7. Yes, its a bad thing.

        • +2

@garratt torlesse: Aren't they still doing the free upgrade for those who use assistive features?

        • @Oversimplified: "check add comment from Microsoft". is it still working?

        • @eatwell365: I can't check it for certain (I upgraded all my devices to W10), that said, it seems to me that they haven't blocked it (the website where you grab exe for the upgrade is still open yaddi yadda).

        • +5

          @eatwell365:

Yes i used the current free upgrade the other day to upgrade from a laptop running Win 7 Pro. Can confirm it still works.

        • @eatwell365: still works

  • was thinking of Acer V3 as upgrade for my not so little one slower laptop. but it only runs Windows 8.1 and the free upgrade to Win10 has finished.your tips and thoughts please?

$100 Amex Cash Back for some makes it $385?

    • Yes, OP you could add this?

      • Finding it hard to resist at this price. What do I DO with it though?

        • +6

          Use it for tafe?

    • +1

max quota met for $100 Amex CashBack if you haven't enrolled.

      • That's why I said for some ;)

This has no maintenance hatch apparently. Can anyone comment on wow hard it would be for a non-tech guy (me) to access the upgrade ports?

  • Could someone please tell me how this compares with the Lenovo 300? Specs seem identical apart from the hdd space which isn't really important to me. 500gb is adequate for my needs

    • And Window 10.

    • Lenovo has more recent i7

      • Is it worth paying 115 more for the Lenovo?

        • depends on what you want the laptop for.
If its for private use I wouldn't bother.

  • Can anyone comment if it is possible to transfer the licence of an existing Window10 upgraded laptop to a new one?

  • $385 for the first one in above list OR $399 for this? $100 off on Dell eBay isn't active any more though.

    • The Dell was a bargain close to $310+- delivered with ssd included but light compact 11.6" design, very different to this 15.4" model. They both represent great value. Stick another 4 GB ( max 16 GB ) ram in this and a ssd and this Acer would become a nice performer for the price.

    • 11 inch vs 15 inch
Crapy new CPU vs last year top of the line CPU
      Win 10 cs win 8.1

I would rather this one - bigger screen much better CPU at the cost of better battery life

      • at the cost of better battery life

Not just that. As the cost of SSD vs HDD as well. SSD is generally preferred. And of course higher cost. Tough comparison.

  • You know, at that price, it's really hard to resist. It's the one with the 840m dgpu right? Damn.

Think I can replace the screen and add ram on it too? And ssd, of course.

  • -1

The laptop is bulky, has low battery life and has hdd. On top of that it is from Harvey Norman. It should not be no more than 200 - 300. I would get a ultrabook with SSD and better performance.

    • +1

This laptop you can most likely replace the hdd easily, ssds these days are so cheap anyway. It's definitely no good for bringing out etc but great for a home laptop.
For travels I'd say definitely ultrabooks, for home… ultrabooks are a bit of a waste and hard to upgrade internals.

    • And that screen res, I can't believe with all the screen snobbery on tablets and phones that someone is willing to put up with a 2001 screen res on their laptop?

    • Show me where else you can get a new i7 notebook for under $500.

If you want thin + light, you have to pay more. Lots more.

  • Anyone of these laptops good for gaming?

    • Define gaming. LOL or csgo on lower setting, sure.

Gta5? Build a i5 tower with gt 950/1050. Parts are cheap from msy. They also build it for you if you're lazy, with a price mark up of course.

    • Laptops can only handle low-medium end gaming, make sure they atleast have Nvidia 1 or 2gb graphics. I have not used any of these because HN are overpriced and slow laptops. But my Zenbook 303L i bought from Costco for 1200 can run Fallout NV, Dishonoured, Batman AC very well. Games like GTA V, Fallout 4 and new batman need at least a pc or console.

  • I posted the Acer V3 deal a few months ago and I got crucified, Trent posts it and gets 50+ votes hmmmm… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/252183

    • +1

been posted a few times already but that SKU has a worse processor but a better HDD for about $100 more.

I'm not moved by the ram or hdd because they'd all be upgraded but the CPU is not something I would upgrade, nor would many other people.

      • There is not much difference between the i5 and i7 processors both dual core and both previous generation.

        • I agree, there's not much difference from a BMW 330 and a 335 but the I'd rather have a 335 if all other things are equal… and in this case, its isn't even equal, its $100 less…

    • +2

It's also because Trent's post came up at the time when a lot of Amex holders are able to use $100 off on $300+ purchase at Harvey Norman. It changes the laptop price to $385 (or say 21% further discount on already a decent price). Even $485 is a tad cheaper than the deal you posted though. I upvoted this post only because I have HN deal activated on my Amex and there will be many OzBargainers like me.

We should look at it more in terms of pure "numbers" rather than just who posted it and how many likes the post gets! That's the true OzBargain spirit.

Funny how this site works, I posted the same comp for $518 last week and it only got 21 voted, I guess under $500 was the sweet spot :)

  • Acer looks good but not much stock. If you use AMEX then they cancel the order then you wont be able to use the $100 offer again.

    • You can call up Amex and they will re-activate the code for you. It depends on customer care executive though how much he is willing to do for you.

      • Thanks, that's good to know, but still a bit of a hassle.

        • Yes, quite a bit.

  • Quite good specs for the price!

  • i7?
I wish people would specify U in the title

    • Well it is still i7… just dual core.
Most non gaming laptops are U now anyway.

  • Harvey Norman Lenovo description says 15.6 and Harvey Norman website showing 14inch? (No number keypad on keyboard)

Don't buy this laptop. Not that the laptop itself is a bad deal but because it's with HN scum.

I "bought" this exact model laptop (Acer V3-572-78VK) on November 3rd through HN website, with my amex to get the $100 back.

On 5.11.16 I received an email saying my order had been "delayed".

On 7.11.16 I received this email from HN "We are emailing you to apologise in regards to your online order. They seem to be an EOL (End Of Life) product meaning the supplier can no longer supply and or manufacture these goods. We will be cancelling these orders and also Refunding the orders in full. Please contact us back via email if you have any further questions or please call us on 02 9763 6891 if you wish to speak to us in regards to this over the phone."

I then sent a return email complaining that on Nov 3rd they had a web sale, and the alternative laptop I was looking at buying had then increased $150 in price and that they should honour that price for me, to which I was fobbed off.

Still haven't received a refund yet.

TL;DR: HN don't have stock of this laptop, and if you buy it thinking you'll get an amex $100 credit, you'll probably get neither.

    • How about going to their store (where stock is) and buy it there? Much easier that way.

      • +3

But when you run a web sale and provide an online shopping experience, there's no excuse for the way they treated him.

At the very least they should give him some kind of compensation as they accepted the order and then later delayed and eventually cancelled it, that's on them and not SlKNV.

That's not good customer service, specially for a big retailer like HN.

        • +3

          That's true. I agree.

      • Couldn't locate a store with stock.

    • If it's advertised "Sale" (or an ad on TV, or print) then they need to have enough stock to cover expected demand and you could have grounds for the alternative.

However if it's marked "Clearance" or "Run Out" it quite clearly tells you that stock is limited. You don't have grounds for an alternative at the same price.

I really wish we'd start seeing sub 500 14 inch i5 or i7 deals. I'm in need of one.

But still a very good deal for 15+. Nice as always Trent!

  • Only avail online no stock for pickup. If buy online, can still get 10% GST from custom ?

  • This is online Only? Website not showing any stock in vic

No more Acer i7 appears. Saved $385 from impulse buying.

    • The question now is where to spend this saved $385 -right?

  • +1

I've read all the comments… Did anyone actually manage to get one today??

    • +1

Picked up the last Lenovo 300 from Oxley, QLD earlier. The price was marked $778 but they claim that was because it included their customer care package..

  • Have to say that's a quite thick laptop with a very slim price…

  • got cancellation email

    • Which laptop is this?

      • the Acer, $485 one

        • I too wanted that laptop but when I was about to place the order the page disappeared. Hope you didn't lose the Amex credit.
